Richard Clayton
Orrell Councillor Richard
Clayton, hailed as “a true
champion of the local
community”, died recently.
Richard was born and bred in
Orrell, and he represented the
Orrell Ward on Wigan Council
from 2004-2012 and from 2018
until his death. He left his wife
Marjorie and family.
Richard was known best as a
scramble champion racer in
the late 60’s-early 70’s national
motocross scene, whilst working in the family
butchers on Church Street during the off-season.
Fellow Orrell councillor Michael
Winstanley paid this tribute;
“Richard was never happier
than when helping people
with their problems. He was
a true champion of the local
community having been born
and bred in Orrell. Richard was
a larger than life character and
always had a really good sense
of humour no matter how
tough things got.
“Not only have I lost a ward
colleague, I have also lost a friend and we will all
miss him tremendously”.
