Dogs delighted
as parks reopen
For nearly two months, the off-leash
dog areas at Breck Community Park in
Grove City have been closed to slow
the spread of a novel coronavirus.
Working under the guidance of the
state board of health, the city’s parks
and recreation department made the
decision to reopen the areas on June 1,
much to the delight of humans and their
active canines. Here, on June 7, Angus
and his much sought-after Frisbee in
the large dog area. Their owners said
they were excited to be able to get their
dogs out to play and socialize with others.
athletes and coaches at the middle and high school levels
are now permitted to participate in individual skills
development and strength training and conditioning
sessions.
“While they will be able to participate in these
activities, they will still have to abide by the state
guidelines that no competitions, games, contact or
tournaments will be permissible at this time,” said
David Stewart, the district’s deputy superintendent.
In addition to these regulations, students and
coaches will have to follow a number of guidelines in
order to participate in the voluntary training and conditioning
sessions, or even enter the premises.
The primary guideline that those wanting to access
their school’s facilities is the signing of a waiver of liability.
District officials say that no student or coach
will be permitted in any skill development or training
session until the liability waiver is complete and on
file.
They will also be asked to check their temperatures
at home and, prior to entering the premises, will be
screened for signs and symptoms of COVID-19. Should
the student or coach have a temperature of 100.4
degrees, they will not be permitted onto the premises.
The same goes for those who may have been exposed to
or lives with any person who has tested positive for
COVID-19 in the past 14 days.
Unlike in the past summer training sessions, there
will be limitations on gatherings.
“They will not be able to gather in groups that number
in excess of 10,” said Stewart.
He said workouts will be conducted in “pods” of students
with the same 5-10 people working out together.
“That number includes the coaching staff,” he said.
Students and coaches will not have access to the
locker rooms (they are strongly encouraged to come to
the workouts in the proper gear and wash them at
home) and large gatherings before or after the training
sessions are strongly discouraged.
There will also be a change in the provision of
hydrating drinks.
Stewart said communal water coolers and the use of
In Education
Summer Reading Challenge goes virtual
Southwest Public Libraries will present its annual
Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) virtually this year,
running now through July 25. SRC is offered for all
ages.
This year’s theme, Imagine Your Story, focuses on
fairytales, fantasy, folklore and mythology. Youth participants
will have the opportunity to track their reading,
watch online programs, and do online activities to
earn points for raffle entries and prizes. Adults will
have the opportunity to submit book reviews online
and be entered for a chance to win a small gift card at
the end.
SRC is a long-standing patron favorite, and it was
important to the library to adapt it into a virtual format
as COVID-19 restrictions continue.
“Summer reading is essential in reducing the summer
slide,” says Youth Services Librarian Mary Allen.
“With so many other activities shut down and parents
searching for learning opportunities for their kids,
engaging youth and supporting their learning became
even more important. We are excited to be able to
encourage reading and provide activities online.”
The library will host special SRC performers and
presenters virtually on Mondays and present virtual
library programs on Wednesdays via the library’s
Facebook page. Virtual storytimes will continue twice
weekly, along with newly added STEM storytimes,
biweekly. Special performers and presenters include
musician Zak Morgan, the Cooking Caravan,
Didgeridoo Down Under, Ohio Nature Education,
Stevens Puppets, and ScienceTellers, storytelling with
a science twist. For adults, Library Live Chats will
continue and take-home craft kits and activities will be
available to pick up and enjoy at home.
In addition to virtual SRC, Southwest Public
Libraries is offering no-contact holds pickup by
appointment while buildings remain closed. Patrons
can find more information about the SRC program or
School district offers summer meals to students through August 7
South-Western City Schools will be providing summer
meals through Aug. 7 from 11:30 a..m to 1 p.m. at
West Franklin Elementary School (3501 Briggs Road,
School (146 Galloway Road, Galloway) on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays. For more information, visit
water fountains will not be permitted at this time so
they are requesting student athletes bring their own
water bottles. Those who do not, will not be allowed to
participate.
Facial coverings are also strongly encouraged during
activities but can be removed when engaging in
vigorous activity. It will have to be put back on once
the vigorous activity has ended.
Stringent cleaning after the use of equipment and
within the facilities will also be implemented.
The district’s guidelines are in line with others
throughout the state, but unlike some they do not have
any time frame for when contact sports will be permissible.
“I think we are going to be living in this phase for a
while,” Stewart said.
He said should guidelines be lessened further, the
district will reevaluate its stance.
“Right now, we are going to focus on this reopening
and see where we are in about three weeks and make
adjustments from there.”
Stewart said that he knows following all of these
guidelines may seem excessive or overwhelming to
some, but added that it was important that the district
take as many precautions as necessary in order to keep
the students, staff and community safe.
In other athletic news, the board of education
approved the installation of a synthetic turf baseball
infield at Grove City High School at the June 8 meeting.
The cost of the new infield is $260,291.
According to the board, the Grove City Greyhounds
Athletic Boosters raised $268,750 for the project,
which was then donated to the district.
Superintendent Dr. Bill Wise said it is not uncommon
for parents to raise funds on behalf of students for
sporting build projects and donate the money to the
district. Wise explained that it is done because the district
owns the property and is able to receive warranty
coverage on future improvements.

The City Beat
The Big Splash
closed in 2020
The city of Grove City, in response to
the COVID-19 pandemic, announced deferring
opening of The Big Splash family
aquatic facility until the 2021 season. The
decision resulted from countless hours of
examining how the city could safely open
the facility.
COVID-19 presents unique challenges
for a community pool. Beyond social distancing,
occupancy considerations and
increased sanitation efforts for the many
high-touch surfaces, the nature of keeping
swimmers safe requires close physical contact
and creates potential for additional
risks in lifesaving situations. Additionally
it became a major challenge trying to hire
and train lifeguards and support personnel.
The city appreciates the many applicants
who patiently waited while the city
explored a potential delayed opening.
These conditions and guidelines from the
Ohio Department of Health would result in
significantly reduced admissions each day
— as much as 80 percent below capacity.
Those concerns coupled with Franklin
The city of Grove City is moving forward with an
intersection improvement project.
At the June 1 meeting, Grove City Council
approved an ordinance to appropriate over $1 million
from a deposit trust fund to improve Demorest Drive
and State Route 62.
The improvements will include pavement reconstruction,
storm sewer additions, traffic signals and
street lighting. The cost for engineering, land acquisition
and construction are estimated at $1.3 million.
The city’s 2019 budget set aside $250,000 for the project,
leaving $1 million that would be funded by the
private sector.
According to Chuck Boso, city administrator, city
officials negotiated with three home builders to contribute
funding to the intersection improvement project.
He said Maronda Homes agreed to contribute
$400,000, Homewood Homes will provide $553,000,
and Dominion Homes will give $93,000.
This road project is an effort by the city to ease traffic
along Orders Road; an area seeing an influx of
development.
Part of the project includes the city acquiring land
from property owners. According to Stephen Smith,
www.columbusmessenger.com
The Big Splash will be closed for the 2020 season but city leaders
plan to resume the fun in 2021.
County Health Director’s recommendation that community pools
not open for 2020, led to deferring the opening.
“The Big Splash has been a major part of our summer programs
since 1999 and while I share the deep disappointment, this
action causes, our priority is always the health and safety of our
community and staff,” said Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage. “Not opening
The Big Splash is heartbreaking and we all hope you — our fellow
citizens — will continue to be patient during this challenging
period.”
Funding approved for intersection project
the city’s law director, city officials have met with the
landowners to acquire right-of-way for the intersection
improvements.
“This has been progressing for a while,” said Smith.
“Most are happy to see improvements.”
Smith explained that once the city obtains the
right-of-way, it would have to go through an annexation
process, though the property owners would not be
forced to annex.
Some of the property is currently in Jackson
Township and would be annexed into the city of Grove
City.
In other news, Grove City Mayor Richard “Ike”
Stage recognized Connor Lewis for earning an All-
American honor in men’s gymnastics at Stanford
University. He earned this honor for his performance
on the vault.
Lewis is a 2016 graduate of Grove City High School.
He is a civil engineering major at Stanford and plans
to pursue his master’s degree.
The city has named a bike trail in Windsor Park
“Connor Lewis Way.”
According to Stage, Lewis is just the third athlete
from Grove City to earn an All-American status. The
other two are Larry Tomas, who was named All-
American in baseball and Mike Chinn who earned the
distinction in wrestling.

Government Focus
Village and county fund road resurfacing project
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Several streets in the village of
Urbancrest are slated to receive aesthetic
improvements.
At its June 9 meeting, council unanimously
approved a resolution which allows
the village to enter into a shared cost
agreement with the Franklin County
Engineer’s Office to resurface three heavily
traveled roadways.
According to Mayor Joseph Barnes Sr.,
the county will contribute approximately
$212,000 and the village will contribute
about $53,000 toward the resurfacing project
for Augustus Drive and Central and
First avenues. Barnes said it has been
more than five years since these roads have
seen any improvements and they are showing
their “wear and tear.”
“There are some potholes on these roads
and I’m pretty sure we have spent the same
amount to fix those potholes as we are
Grove City Food Pantry calls
for food delivery volunteers
Delivery volunteers are needed for the
Grove City Food Pantry during the month
spending to resurface them,” he said.
He expects the road improvement project
to be undertaken in the summer with
the project lasting several weeks. He added
he does not believe there will be road closures
during this process.
The funding opportunity comes from the
county’s small government infrastructure
improvement funds.
During the discussion regarding road
evaluations (to determine which roads are
in greater need of repair and resurfacing)
councilwoman Alicia Wiggins requested
they ask the county about flooding issues
on Augustus Drive.
Wiggins said it seems like every time it
rains, the roadway collects enough water to
create flooding conditions.
“Can we have them look at this issue
(when they are here in the village)?” she
asked.
Barnes said they will ask the county
about the problem but added that the village
often experiences flooding conditions.
He said some of the flooding stems from
around the southwest
of June. Volunteers use contact-free delivery
methods to provide food to the area’s
most vulnerable families. Shifts normally
last less than an hour. Volunteers should
have a vehicle that fits four to six medium
allowing the city of Grove City to access a
release value through the village’s storm
system to carry excessive water levels.
Councilwoman Shawn Moore asked
whether they needed to have their storm
and sewer system inspected. Barnes said
he did not believe it was necessary as it is
regularly inspected by the Ohio
Environmental Protection Agency. Instead,
he requested they ask neighbors not to
blow their lawn clippings into the roadway.
In other news, Barnes announced that
street commissioner Edward Banks
resigned upon moving out of the village.
Jerome Johnson will fill Banks’s appointed
term, which expires Dec. 31, 2020.
The village has also implemented new
rules in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
Attendees of the council meeting will have
their temperatures taken at the door and
will be asked a series of questions regarding
travel and contact with a known
patient. Face coverings are also required to
enter the council chambers; seating is limited
in order to physically distance.
sized boxes. Volunteers will need to arrive
at the food pantry during the scheduled
time in order to deliver food to customers
before 5 p.m. For more information, visit
For the second year in a row, the Grove City High School
NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps) was notified
by the Navy that they received the Distinguished Unit Award
with Academic Honors for their overall success in drill competitions,
shooting ranges, athletic and academic tournaments, and in
their neighborhoods.
This award is given to the top 20 percent of Navy JROTC units
across the United States, Europe and Asia for outstanding performances
during the school year.
“This is an incredible accomplishment for the cadet’s to earn
this award two years in a row,” said Commander Dustin Martin,
the senior naval science instructor at Grove City. “This award is
likened to an athletic state or regional championship, but the season
is the entire year. At a time when there are so many negative
things said about this young generation, I am here to say that
these cadets represent the best of our future.”
This award was given to Grove City by retired Commander
Joseph Hankins, Director of NJROTC Area Three. The region
includes 12 states: West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan,
Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota,
South Dakota and Nebraska.
The unit logged more than 1,900 hours of community service as
the unit dedicated its time after school and weekends to support
service projects like Adopt-A-Highway clean ups, veteran ceremonies,
military service member care packages, and nursing
home visits to name a few.
The Cadet Commanding Officer of the unit, Kolbe Klinedinst,
said, “We have faced many obstacles throughout this trying school
year, and yet we have worked hard to overcome these obstacles. I
am so proud of each and every cadet because without them none
of this would be possible. It is their hard work and dedication that
got us here; great job greyhounds!”
A Black Lives Matter traveling protest made its way through downtown Grove City on June 7. Those protesting for racial equality
and against police violence walked down Broadway and laid on the ground on Park Street where the Grove City Library was once
located. Worldwide protests have taken place since the death of George Floyd, who died in Minneapolis on May 25 after a police
officer (who is now charged with murder) pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. Grove City Mayor Richard
“Ike” Stage and village of Urbancrest Mayor Joseph Barnes Sr. greeted the participants and spoke at the event.
I’ve traveled along the path encircling
the small wooded area behind the Grove
City High School stadium countless times
and walked through it more than a few
times spanning the nearly 40 years I’ve
lived here. Yet, I’m still awed at the new
displays Mother Nature routinely showcases
in there. A few of my previous columns
touched upon some of the hidden and
exposed treasures that small tree setting
supports. A recent walk provided yet
another memorable experience, one that
left me convinced that little tree stand is
worthy of its very own written piece.
As our area steadily explodes into what
some call progress, the encroachment continues
with undeveloped land dwindling.
Yet, that small wooded area, sitting precariously
in the middle of the progress, has
somehow managed to overcome the odds of
survival while continuing to support a
diversified habitat. I’m guessing it’s just
two acres, give or take. It’s no ‘Jurassic
Park,’ but if you apply the basic principles
of nature watching, i.e. being still, while
avoiding sudden movements, observant,
and exhibiting a whole lot of patience
(Note: being a Browns fan probably qualifies
you), you’ll easily see a thriving interactive
community at work and play behind
the scenes and often in plain sight.
The tree stand has aged with me, both
of us now being past the mature stage (I’ll
presume my steadily increasing turkey
vulture sightings circling overhead there
are not in anticipation of my going to the
next stage). The tree stand is dominantly
populated by older oaks and walnuts that
provide abundant sustaining acorns and
nuts for numerous animal species. Over
the years, some of the tall dead trees have
toppled down during storms.
Unfortunately, the new succession of
growth has become the invasive honeysuckle
bushes, preventing the necessary
sustaining quality for regeneration. Left as
is, I fear its days may be numbered.
My first vivid memory of the small forest
was years ago while walking our dog.
We’d watched a red-bellied woodpecker
construct a hole for its nest atop a tall dead
oak. Then, one day, we watched as a group
of starlings attacked and battled the woodpecker
for the nest. It was a long battle
that fully captivated our attention. The
woodpecker eventually gave up; the starlings
took over residence, as is usually the
case. We felt bad for the woodpecker, but
reasoned it was nature at work. I’ve read
where woodpeckers have adapted by nesting
later in the season, after the starling
has nested, increasing its chances of success.
Hopefully, this one learned that hard
lesson. That dead tree has since come
down, but many others took its place and
you can easily hear woodpeckers inhabiting
that small forest.
You can also hear the red-tailed hawk
family that’s lived in those trees for many
years. They make sloppy looking nests
with big twigs and branches, high up in the
trees. Every year we watch their young
hawks as they mature, take flight, and
learn to hunt. You can often see a hawk sitting
at the top of the lights on the adjoining
football or track field, surveying the
ground for prey. Often the noise is deafening
as blue jays, crows and even the small
birds chase them relentlessly across the
Murfin Fields.
On another walk I came across a resident
who was busy freeing a muskrat from
the chain fence surrounding the track.
Over the years, the fence line has been routinely
sprayed with herbicides, as is also
the case at Murfin. The result has been
leaching with erosion along the fence line
over the years. That’s exposed the sharp
barbed bottoms of the metal fencing the
muskrat had been pierced with. It’s created
another accident waiting to happen, another
animal from the wood stand, or maybe
someone’s pet being walked along the path.
Using heavy duty gloves, the resident managed
to free and release the hopelessly
stuck muskrat.
As would be expected with the abundance
of nuts, squirrels run rampantly
about. I’ve seen them cornered in trees by
www.columbusmessenger.com
Guest Column
Dave Burton
hawks and chased across the field. Over
the years, there have been a couple of
white squirrels living there. They sadly
disappeared, presumably being at a distinct
disadvantage to avoiding hawks.
Chipmunks, rabbits, snakes, ducks and
geese during the breeding season, are commonly
seen in there. A few years ago, there
was a deer family living there. They
became trusting, providing residents with
close-up watching experiences as they
grazed with their fawns along the small
adjoining field. They’ve since disappeared,
perhaps just coincidentally as sightings of
coyotes over there and across our area have
increased.
The wildlife experience with deer has
been replaced by a red fox family. My first
sighting of the fox was while walking along
the path. It was 100 feet ahead of me. I
thought it was a very thin, loose dog. I
stopped and watched, then realized it was
a fox. It had a rabbit in its mouth. It finally
scurried into the tree stand and I didn’t see
it again for some time.
Then, I was in the same part of the path
and there it was, just ahead of me. It was
just sitting there like a dog, maybe 50 feet
away. We both froze and locked eyes on
each other. Then, it started moving toward
me. I decided it was time to exit. But then
it broke off and went into the tree stand so
I could resume my normal breathing again.
I’ve had many sightings of the fox since
then. I’ve seen it sunning itself on the
fields and sitting in the parking lot of the
GCKA office building, then casually move
along the bushes there. I spotted it crossing
the bridge by the concession stand at
Murfin and disappear into the bushes.
Once I saw it come flying across the high
school field by the batting cage and disappear
into the wood stand. A few weeks ago,
I watched as it jumped onto the top of the
fence along the Murfin path, calmly sat
there watching us, then jump down and
run across the field.
I went nearly a month without seeing
the fox. A resident told me it had last been
seen limping. I feared the worst. But
nature once again proved its resiliency.
During recent heavy rains, with the path
along Murfin flooded out yet again, we
diverted our walk to the unflooded path
through the middle of Murfin. As we got to
the tree stand, there was a male and
female red fox, sitting on the path watching
us, our close presence obviously not an
issue to them. Could nature have red fox
pups in store for us to watch and enjoy in
the future?
In Entertainment
If you have read one of Shirley Jackson’s
novels or short stories, chances are they
created a feeling of unease within. Her
style of writing, of shaping an atmosphere
that is both dream-like and dreadful,
reaches into the psyche of her audience and
maintains its grip well after the turning of
the last page.
To avid fans of the author, there is no
denying how spellbinding her work can be,
but to avid cinephiles the same cannot be
said for the majority of the theatrical interpretation
of her creations. For more than
half a century, writers and directors have
tried to bring her poetically frightening
novels and short stories to life on the
screen and seldom have they hit the mark.
The latest interpretation of her work, however,
comes the closest to that mark and
that is because it plays as fast and loose
with reality as Jackson does in her novels.
And considering the film is also a fast and
loose interpretation of her life, I would say
that is quite befitting for the “Queen of
Gothic Horror.”
At least 10 minutes pass in the film
“Shirley” before we meet the titular
woman, but we are introduced to her in the
first scene when her piece “The Lottery”
makes a big impression. Unlike most readers
of the piece that was published in the
New Yorker in 1948, Rose Nesler (Odessa
Young) does not consider it a chilling abomination
but rather an awakening of sorts.
She is thrilled by this new discovery, gushing
to her husband Fred (Logan Lerman)
about this talented woman who is unafraid
to combs the depths of human depravity.
Flush with the knowledge that she will
soon be meeting the actual person — Fred
was recently hired to assist Shirley’s professor
husband and they are on their way
to their Vermont home when the film
begins — her bloom only grows as she
watches in real-time as her new favorite
author (portrayed superbly by Elisabeth
Moss) volleys with the masses at a social
gathering.
When the opportunity for a one-on-one
interaction occurs, Rose seizes the moment
but is taken aback by Shirley’s blunt
demeanor and withering barbs about her
hidden pregnancy and shotgun marriage.
After Stanley tries to explain away his
wife’s demeanor on a variety of health ailments,
she tries once again to connect with
the author but is verbally rebuffed.
Calling her a monster, Rose begs her
husband to find a new place to stay, but
Fred believes his career will only be
advanced through the goodwill of Stanley’s
word. With nothing to do, and via the
prompting of Stanley, Rose begins to oversee
Shirley’s care as the author battles ailing
health, mental illness and the high
expectations of a new novel.
Over the course of the film, the two
women begin to bond over societal pressures
and philandering husbands and then
obsess about the mysterious case of a local
college student who disappeared months
ago. As they grew closer, their psyches
begin to merge, leaving the viewer wondering
if Rose is a figment of Shirley’s imagination,
a construct of the writing process, a
version of her younger self, or the missing
woman who may have had a relationship
with the cheating professor.
Working from the 2014 novel of the
same name by Susan Scarf Merrell, screenwriter
Sarah Gubbins and director
Josephine Decker craft this film like it was
lifted from one of Jackson’s novels. It is
equal parts alluring, daring, spooky and
surreal, leaving the viewer doubting things
they have seen and wondering what lurks
around the corner.
Though deriving
heavily from the
atmosphere of
Jackson’s novels, the
impact of film
doesn’t land with
the same lingering
punch but it does
make for a dreamily unsettling piece of
entertainment that offers a compelling
half-truthful, half-fictionalized look at the
famed author as she begins to craft one of
her classics.
“Shirley” is streaming on Hulu and
available digitally for rent or purchase on
iTunes, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu
and on-demand providers. It is also being
presented on virtual theaters which support
small and local independent theaters.
Westland student selected for Apple tech camp
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Bryson Palmer is a young man in
demand.
If a problem arises with a phone or computer
or occasionally a television set, he is
the one friends, family and neighbors come
to in their time of need.
It does not matter to them that he holds
no job in the field, nor does he have a
degree in software development (though he
is working on it through courses at
Columbus State Community College); what
matters is that he is always willing to take
the time to listen to their issue and that he
has a dogged determination to come up
with a solution.
“Most of the time I can figure out what
is going on,” said the westside teen, “but
when I can’t, I always feel so bad that they
have to go and pay for it.”
Palmer said he does not like that feeling
of sending something away for expensive
repairs and replacements, and he certainly
does not like not knowing how to solve a
problem. So he makes it his mission to
learn more about the product, its components
and how it works “behind the
screen.”
“It’s what I want to do for my career so
anything that could help me learn more
about this field is fine with me,” Palmer
said.
And with his recent acceptance into a
summer camp with a global company
known for technological innovation,
chances are high he is going to absorb even
more skills.
Knowing of computers and other electronic
devices is not something Palmer
always had an interest in. He never took
apart keyboards or remotes to see their
inner components and he was never scolded
for taking apart his sister’s toys to see if
he could put them back together.
“Tinkering with gadgets was never
something I did,” he said. “It really wasn’t
until high school that I took an interest in
how computer-based products work.”
Palmer had just entered his freshman
year at Westland High School when he was
given a career assessment test. The
results, he said, recommended an engineering
or software development pathway for
his analytical mind.
“I am not an artsy or creative person at
all,” he said, “so I wasn’t that surprised
when the results listed those fields as my
strengths.”
Intrigued by the options, he enrolled in
a computer programming course and
immediately discovered an aptitude for it.
“Bryson took to the material right
away,” said Jamie Dato, a business and
computer programming educator at the
school. “He was the student other students
went to when they had a problem.”
When his sophomore year came around,
he took an advanced computer programming
course and then enrolled in the software
development program at the
Accelerated Learning Center for his junior
year.
Knowing his passion for the field, Dato
told Palmer that Apple was accepting
applications into their Engineering
Technology Camp (ETC) and encouraged
him to apply.
“I thought the chances of being accepted
into this summer camp were really low,”
Palmer said. “But despite those odds, I
applied because I thought it would be a
great experience if I were to be selected.”
With his application submitted, he tried
not to dream about that three week, allexpense
paid trip to Apple headquarters in
Cupertino, Calif. where he and a handful of
other high school students would create
products under the tutelage of company
employees.
“It was really hard not to think about,”
he said.
What kept his mind off that dream was
another one: trying to qualify for the boys
state wrestling tournament
“It had been more than a decade since
our school had a wrestler compete at the
state tournament and I wanted to end that
streak,” he said.
And in early March, he did just that.
(Teammate Jakob Hurley also qualified,
and Tyler Jude qualified as an alternate.)
Then, 12 hours before he was to compete,
the tournament was canceled to slow
the spread of a novel coronavirus.
“I was really bummed,” he said. “This
had been a goal of mine for years and to
have this happen was really disheartening.”
Still reeling from that cancellation and
the closure of his school, he received good
news.
“About three weeks later I learned I had
been selected to attend the Apple camp,” he
said. “I couldn’t believe it.”
He said with all that was going on
regarding the coronavirus, he had a hunch
the camp would not be held as it was in the
past.
“I was hoping they would tell us that it
had been pushed back and that they would
fly us out there some other time for this
program,” he said.
But that was not to be: several weeks
ago, the 25 students across the country
who were selected to participate in ETC
were informed the program would be held
virtually in July. Though they will not get
to fly out to California and pick the brains
of the developers in-person, they will still
get access to the staff and they will still be
able to break off into groups and create
products of unknown origin.
“They’re keeping their plans locked
down tight right now,” said Palmer. “I don’t
really know what they have up their
sleeves.”
He said that while it would have been
nice to experience the program as intended,
he is not going to dwell on the missed
opportunity.
“This is still going to be an exciting and
educational experience for me,” Palmer
said. “I am so grateful to have been selected
and I am looking forward to learning
from these innovators and applying their
knowledge to real-life situations.”
