A Message from our President…

To Our Friends, Family and Community:
It is with great pride that we announce Peninsula Volunteers,
Inc., will be reaching a significant milestone this-coming year –
our sixty fifth anniversary!
This is a wonderful testimonial to the founders of our
organization, their foresight in both the timeliness of our
mission and the business acumen established almost 65 years
ago. Our organization may be growing older, but our mission is more timely than ever.
We are constantly looking for the best possible ways to enhance the lives of our community
members so that they can live a fulfilled life, providing services to ensure their dignity and
ability to stay in the community they helped to build.
As we look back over the past 65 years we quickly realize the Peninsula Volunteer founders
were truly visionaries. In the spring of 1949, this group of forward thinking ladies
opened the door of a small house in Menlo Park for seniors and appropriately called this
first suburban senior center in the Western U.S., Little House. It has since moved, been
remodeled and is a wonderful welcoming club-like facility, thanks to Merv Morris’ generous
donation.
After this courageous and successful beginning they observed another need no other group
or local government was addressing, affordable housing for seniors. In 1959 a small
contingency of PVs went to Washington, D.C., and succeeded in getting the first HUD loan
granted to a private organization. Using this loan, in 1960 Partridge/Kennedy Apartments
opened for low-income seniors in Menlo Park within walking distance to both Little
House and shopping. Affordable housing was still barely recognized when PVs again
secured funding and built Crane Place, which opened with 93 apartments in 1980. Both
apartment buildings have won awards for their architecture and provide over 82% of the
affordable senior housing in Menlo Park.
As our organization’s accomplishments grew, so did the PVs’ awareness of the growing
need for a program/facility where adults with physical limitations due to memory loss,
Alzheimer’s or other special needs could come for the day. Rosener House opened in 1978
to address this need. Rosener House is recognized for its superior supervision of
programs for social interaction and functional independence. Because of Rosener House,
family members can continue to work or have a respite from the constant care needed by
their loved one. Another PV program ahead of its time, but much needed.
Because nutrition for the homebound is a growing need, Peninsula Volunteers started
Meals on Wheels, joining this nationally known program. We are now preparing and
delivering over 1,500 meals per week. For many of our clients, this is the only contact they
have with people and this service not only provides needed nutrition, but has saved lives!
Peninsula Volunteers could not have achieved these past milestones without the loyal and
generous support of our donors. It is with great pride that we can report to you that our
audit verifies 90.7% of your donations went to fund our programs and services. Your
confidence in our organization and belief in our vision have helped make our services and
programs a reality and we are most grateful for your past generosity.
We are not resting on our laurels but are constantly looking for future opportunities and
ways to maintain the most relevant services and programs. PVs were founded by visionaries
and we intend to continue in that honored tradition for the next 65 years!

Executive Director’s Message
“Everything old is new again”, and that
couldn’t be more true than about Peninsula
Volunteers. The seeds planted by those exceptional
women, the founding PVs, have come to
fruition.
The low-income senior housing they pioneered
decades ago – first in the USA – has resulted in
two beautiful, well-maintained buildings with
over 123 units of specialized, safe and comfortable
apartments. Now both Partridge/Kennedy
and Crane Place Apartments are paid off. They
are exceptional models for private public partnership.
Both buildings have been recently
renovated for beauty, functionality and energy
efficiency too!
Little House, the Roslyn G. Morris Adult
Activity Center, has reopened art and ceramics
programs. The galleries have been expanded;
the classes have grown. We have refreshed the
building and made every space more functional
– and fun.
Rosener House, our premier Adult Day Care
Center, continues to develop new, vital services
for families struggling to keep loved ones at
home. Early prevention programs have been
added, as have more services for those with
physical, rather than cognitive, challenges.
Meals on Wheels and our nutrition services to
congregate senior dining sites continue to hit
new records for service almost every month.
They are life savers, quite literally, as well as
life givers.
Peninsula Volunteers never rests on our laurels.

MEALS ON WHEELS
Nourishing Body & Spirit
Peninsula Volunteers, Inc. is the only South San Mateo County provider of hot, nutritious
meals to homebound seniors and adults with disabilities. For many of these hundreds of Meals
on Wheels clients, our drivers and volunteers are the only people they see each day. They look
forward to their deliveries, and they allow us to do a check to make sure they are safe and well.
How Your Donation Dollars Were Spent

Over 150,000 meals were prepared, packaged and delivered
to local seniors & disabled adults
Almost 300 meals were delivered to homes from Belmont to
East Palo Alto every weekday
Over 1,000 hours of home visits and wellness checks were
made, both by phone and in person, to ensure our clients are
safe and well
Over 100 hours of nutrition counseling and education
were provided to participants, families and caregivers
All meals provide a minimum of 1/3 of the recommended
daily intake of nutrients for older adults
Meal delivery often includes a small gift; holiday meals
include many extras fitting for the occasion
The Meals on Wheels program fulfills the mission of Peninsula
Volunteers’ “Enriching Lives” by our commitment to promot-
ing dignity and independence for all our clients.
By providing nutritious meals, social contact and other
needed resources, these seniors and disabled adults are able to
continue to live in their homes and communities for as long as
safely possible.

ROSENER HOUSE
Nurturing Body & Spirit
Rosener House serves seniors and adults with challenges and limitations by providing care and
services every weekday. Participants are offered a wide range of therapeutic activities and health
services. Family caregivers are provided much-needed respite and support. Rosener House serves
as an affordable and quality alternative to assisted living or home care.
The philosophy of care is to treat all participants with dignity and respect, focusing on individual
strengths while providing social support and a sense of community. Families are able to remain
together as participants maintain their independence and functional abilities as long as possible.
Rosener House Was Able to Introduce
Two New Programs in 2010-11
with the Assistance of YOUR Donations!
Early Memory Loss Wellness Program
Offered to active adults who are beginning to have
concerns about their memory or have a diagnosis of
Mild Cognitive Impairment and want to proactively
maintain their abilities and share their experiences.
This program meets once a week at Rosener House
and has recently instituted field trips, thanks to the
donation of a van through the Sequoia Healthcare
District.
Alzheimer’s Café
Based on the work of Dutch psychologists, the
Alzheimer’s Café offers people living with dementia
and their families an opportunity to socialize in an
inviting setting, where everyone can be themselves,
share experiences, and learn from one another.
Peninsula Volunteers hosts the only local Alzheimer’s
Cafe, and there are only a few nationwide. The Café
is held monthly at Little House, and attendance
steadily grows. This event is part of a growing movement
to offer social support for people who, due to
illness in their family, may become socially isolated.
Peninsula Volunteers has long been considered a
frontrunner in addressing the needs of disabled
seniors and adults.
While Peninsula Volunteers and Rosener House staff are
extremely proud of the care and accomplishments of the past
year, we realize that our work is certainly not complete. With
the increase in the senior population, we are receiving more
requests for services than ever before.

LITTLE HOUSE
The Roslyn G. Morris Adult Activity Center
Enriching Body & Spirit
Little House Adult Activity Center was founded in literally a
little house in Menlo Park almost 65 years ago by the Peninsula
Volunteers.
Think of Little House as a “home away from home”. At Little
House there is a wide array of activities – card games, learning
a second language, exercise to stay active and well, enjoying
a relaxing massage, attending book and stamp club
meetings with others who share the same interests, and much
more. Members can learn a new skill or hobby, such as woodworking,
art, ceramics, and lapidary, to name a few. For
“techies” there is a computer lab as well as classes from
beginner to advanced, with fun lessons in tracing a family
tree online, using digital graphics, exploring the Web,
or designing customized greeting cards. There is a “boot
camp” for hard-core, physical fitness buffs, a strength training
class, other wellness programs for adults of all ages and
physical conditions.
Little House also offers one-on-one guidance for topics vital
to aging adults who want to live an independent lifestyle.
Our “Travel Desk” plans group outings from regional to
worldwide, or you can get help from an expert in planning a
personal trip. All Little House counselors have been carefully
screened by Peninsula Volunteers staff – there is no “sales
pitch”; rather it’s a sharing of information and options.
Mostly, Little House is a great place for seniors and adults to
just “hang out” – play a game of cards or pool, watch a movie,
listen to a speaker, or just come and enjoy the landscaping
and gardens. Lunch is served every weekday at the Little
House Café, open to the public. Coffee service opens at 8:30
every weekday morning. We’re even a WiFi hotspot!

Since 1959 Peninsula Volunteers, Inc. has been a pioneer in meeting the need for safe, affordable
senior housing on the Peninsula.
Peninsula Volunteer Properties owns and operates two apartment complexes in Menlo Park –
Crane Place and Partridge/Kennedy Apartments.
Peninsula Volunteer Properties Serves our
Local Community
• Provides 82% of all low-income senior housing in Menlo Park,
with 123 units of affordable, safe and updated housing for
deserving low-income seniors
• 10% of units are equipped for physically disabled
• Through the cooperation and financial assistance of HUD,
seniors are assured this opportunity will remain affordable for
years to come
• Each facility has on-site staff to monitor health and safety,
with the goal of allowing these seniors to “age in place” as
long as possible
• Each facility is maintained by a professional property management
organization, addressing safety, environmental and
aesthetic issues
• Amenities to tenants include membership at Little House Adult
Activity Center, holiday activities, lectures and talks and our
Annual Holiday Tea

Growing Community Spirit
THE PVI VOLUNTEER PROGRAM CONTINUES TO GROW in every way – number of people
served, volunteer hours and quality of service.
A remarkable 20% volunteered over 5 hours per week,
sometimes whole families
Volunteerism is the lifeblood of the Peninsula Volunteers
organization – through our wonderful PV’s, the heart of the
agency, who have run this organization for over 60 years,
and the many individuals who volunteer through their
work, civic group or other organization, or serve on their
own as good citizens.
Individuals have taken on more lead volunteer roles at
Little House. Business, student and service groups are
driving and sponsoring Meals on Wheels routes. People of
all ages entertain and socialize with participants at Rosener
House. Support from the community continues to grow.
