CPS C VID-199

RESPONSE

PREPARING FOR A

DYNAMIC SCHOOL YEAR

Commonwealth-Parkville School is developing strategies and protocols that will enable us

to open our campuses safely in August. Our priority is our community’s health and safety

while staying true to our mission:

To provide students an engaging academic program within a caring, collaborative

environment that develops leadership skills, creativity, and character.

We continue to plan for an August 11 start to the 2020-21 school year, and look forward to

welcoming our students on campus, provided the Puerto Rico Government allows schools

to open. While we would love to start the year with all our students together on campus,

given current health conditions we anticipate we will open using a hybrid combination of

on-campus and distance learning. Students will attend classes on campus on alternating

days. Our goal will be to shift to a full face-to-face learning model as soon as health and

safety conditions allow. It is possible that government decisions or other factors may cause

us to change our plan for the start of the school year. In this case, we will alert the school

community immediately.

The following CPS Reopening Guidelines provide the CPS community an overview of our

2020–21 school opening procedures, and include a brief summary of what to expect as we

open our classrooms and campuses. These guidelines include information about the

Learning Models and Health and Safety Procedures we will implement next year.

We are using guidance from public health officials, local government requirements, and

resources from other schools, colleges and leading organizations. CPS is committed to

serving our students with programs that are engaging, flexible, and responsive to the current

crisis. In the weeks ahead, we will share additional details regarding our drop-off

procedures, class schedules, and the many other aspects of school life that will change

due to the COVID-19 crisis.

MODEL 1: FACE-TO-FACE

LEARNING ON-CAMPUS

CPS is preparing for on-campus learning and school operations for August 2020. Our community

will follow strict health and safety practices, in line with local regulations and recommended

practices. It is very important that parents, teachers and students work in partnership to take joint

responsibility for our health and safety.

• Students and teachers follow their regular class schedule on campus.

• Modified pick up and drop off procedures at the gates

• Physical distancing measures in common spaces

• Rigorous cleaning and hygiene protocols

• On-campus athletics and activities will be offered to the

extent allowed by government health and safety guidelines

• Temperature checks and health screening

• Limited access to campus for visitors, therapists, tutors,

vendors and/or parents

• PKS-CHS cafeteria use is modified based on health and

safety protocols

(3)

The campus is open, but distancing guidelines require us to reduce student density on campus. Students are

divided into two cohorts, with one group attending classes on campus and the other off campus on alternating days.

Students who are not on campus will continue learning via synchronous and asynchronous activities. On/off campus

groupings are changed at set times in the calendar, with advanced notice to parents.

MODEL 2: HYBRID

FACE-TO-FACE &

DISTANCE LEARNING

• Student classrooms are divided into two cohorts, learning on/off

campus on alternating days.

• Students learn on campus following their class schedule, while

students at home engage in a combination of live (via zoom) and asynchronous

learning activities.

• Asynchronous learning activities - Lessons and videos provided by the

teacher to be accessed by students online

• Siblings will be placed in the same on/off campus cohorts to facilitate

parent transportation

• Physical distancing measures in classrooms and common spaces

• Reduced student movement/mixing during the school day

• Limited after school activities may be offered depending on CPS and

government health and safety guidelines. Some activities may be

offered in an online format

• PKS-CHS cafeteria use is modified based on health and safety protocols

• Monies already paid for after school program, and lunch will be credited

or refunded as determined by the school

(4)

MODEL 3: CONNECTED COMETS

DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM

Our CPS Connected-Comets Distance Learning

Program will blend synchronous and asynchronous

learning using schedules and curricula that provide

academic rigor balanced with well-being. In the

spring of 2020 we learned a great deal from our rapid

shift to Distance Learning. We are applying the

lessons learned so that we can start with our

enhanced distance learning program in August, if

needed. Based on feedback from the community, our

program will provide additional guidance for families,

and increased personal connection between students

and teachers. We will also continue to prioritize

socio-emotional well-being, through individual

attention as well as online versions of familiar school

activities.

• Synchronous learning activities - Students and teachers are online

together at the same time

• Asynchronous learning activities - Lessons, videos and other learning

activities are provided by the teacher to be accessed by students online

• A robust online program of wellness and school activities will be offered

• Fees already paid for the after school program or cafeteria will be

credited or refunded as determined by the school

(5)

In reopening the PKS and CHS campuses, we will employ CDC/UNESCO/WHO recommended

strategies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, and reduce the risk to our students, parents, faculty, staff,

and visitors. These include:

Facility Cleaning : Facility cleaning and disinfection will be increased, especially common areas, hightouch surfaces, and

high-traffic zones.

COMMUNITY HEALTH

AND SAFETY

Health Screenings : Monitoring will be in place for checking temperatures and symptoms (period). An isolation area near

our Health Center is being created for use as needed on each campus.

Quarantine Requirements : Members of the community testing positive for COVID-19, or with COVID-19 symptoms, or in

contact with a confirmed COVID-19 person will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days, or until a confirmed negative

COVID-19 test (molecular) is provided.

Hand Hygiene: Hand washing and use of hand sanitizer will be ritualized throughout the day.

Physical Distancing: Space design, furniture layout, queues, and transit within the building will be configured to maintain

physical distancing as much as possible. There will be capacity limits to allow for physical distancing in classrooms, meeting

rooms and all dining spaces.

Personal Protective Equipment: Students, teachers and staff will wear masks during the school day. Gloves, face masks and

other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided for faculty and staff.

Isolation, Testing, and Contact Tracing : in the event of a suspected case of COVID-19, employees and students will be isolated

until they leave campus. Testing will be required of all employees or students displaying COVID-19 symptoms. We will

assist with contact tracing to determine risks of exposure, and relevant parties will be notified.

Reduced Density & Mixing: We will reduce density and student mixing through a variety of strategies including limited

movement within buildings, alternative meal locations, etc.

Changes to Campus Access for Visitors and Parents: Access to campus for parents and visitors will be carefully evaluated,

limited and monitored. We will not be able to accommodate tutors or therapists on campus during the school day.

Social-Emotional Learning: SEL programs at the school will be adapted and enhanced to build resilience.

MISSION & BELIEFS

In this extraordinary time, our strength lies in uniting and empowering the Commonwealth- Parkville School community—students, teachers and parents. As we come through this

time together, we will continue to live by the values that have defined us for many years. Our community’s sense of connection and collaboration will grow through the experiences

that we will face together in the uncertain future that lies ahead. Although our school programs will be different than we thought just a few months ago, our mission lives on.
