Huntington Harbour the 5 Islands + 1

Huntington Harbour consists of five man-made islands + 1 

if you add Sunset Isle which was in existence before the 

development of Huntington Harbor. When Huntington 

Harbour was developed the homeowners lost their backyard 

which was Sunset Bay Estuary Wetlands, In place of the 

Sunset Bay Estuary Sunset Beach Homewowners property 

was cut off with a block wall which still exists today where 

the former Sunset Bay Estaury started. The five islands 

of Huntington Harbour consist of Davenport, Trinidad, 

Humboldt, Gilbert, & Admiralty 

Huntington Harbour construction began in 1963 at a cost 

of some $200 million, with the harbors and peninsulas located 

on the former site of the historic Sunset Bay Estuary 

wetlands which of course was destroyed with the dredging 

and filling 

to develop the land for the new community of Huntington 

Harbour. 

Peter’s Landing Marina was made famous back in the day 

for the Red Onion Bar and Restaurant located in the Marina 

where singles from all over So Cal made the trip to Huntington 

Harbour to gather at one of the hottest bars in the 

70’s and 80’. Red Onion is no more and the building is now 

occupied by Calvary Chapel of Huntingon Harbour. The 

Marina at Huntington Harbour provides complimentary 

two-hour guest slips on a first-come, first-served basis for 

mariners who enjoy waterfront dining at Pelican Isle. Huntington 

Harbour is well known for kayaking and paddleboarding 

enthusiasts. Rentals are available for a nominal fee 

along PCH at several locations as well as Duffy Boat Rentals.

The Adventures of Spot, Brodie and “JB” World Paddleboard Tour 

Sunset Beach Local “JB” Griffin has just published his first Children’s Book titled the Adventures of Spot, 

Brodie and “JB” World Paddleboard tour, “JB” started paddleboarding with his dogs Spot and Brodie 

around Sunset Isle in 2010. The idea of a fictional global paddleboard tour Children’s book to interesting 

destinations came into “JB”s mind a few years ago. The book is available to read for free online and 

printed copies are available for sale. A portion of the 

proceeds from the sale of he book will be donated 

to charities serving needy Children throughout the 

planet.

About Sunset Beach 

Sunset Beach is a beachfront community located in Orange County, California. In 2011, it was annexed by Huntington Beach. Sunset 

Beach features one of the widest beaches in southern California. Running parallel to the beach, from the north of town to the southern 

edge is the Green Belt, a bucolic 14 acre park on which residents walk their dogs. Southeast of Sunset Beach is Bolsa Chica State Beach. 

To the east is the bayfront community of Huntington Harbour 

(part of Huntington Beach), and roughly north is the Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, and the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge. 

The small gated community of Surfside located between Sunset Beach and the Weapons Station is part of Seal Beach, with the rest of Seal 

Beach on the other side of the Weapons Station. 

Sunset Beach does not have residential mail delivery. Instead, residents pick up their mail at post office boxes in the centrally-located post 

office or at private post office boxes located on 22nd Street. Sunset Beach is served by the Sunset Beach Sanitary District. The SBBA /

If you live in Sunset Beach you can’t miss meeting Mike Ballew a Sunset Beach local by way of Washington State 

where Mike was born and raised. The former University of Washington, World Football League and NFL Player 

stands 6’ 5”. Mike has trimmed down a bit from his 250 pounds playing weight which was considered big in the 

the 1970s. During his career Mike was paid to push people around as an Offensive Lineman and Defensive End. 

After his playing career ended, Mike took to Hollywood and acting where he was on the Big Screen for many 

movies. Yes you bet he was cast as a Football Player. He appeared in North Dallas 40 and many others. Mike 

can tell you he had a nice run doing what he loved, Football withouth the pain. Today Mike is facing a different 

challenge in life. A few years ago Mike was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease. He is fighting it out one day at a 

time and staying positive. Mike has taken up kick boxing to keep active and to help him battle the disease. Next 

time you see Mike give him a high five and tell him you read about him on Sunset Beach Mag!

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

The normal is slowly returning to our bustling beach 

town this time of year with restaurants for outdoor 

dining and take out only. After a brief reopening 

Restaurants were forced to close again after a spike 

in new cases after July 4th. Almost five months ago 

the Governor ordered all State of California bars 

and restaurants to close including businesses to 

help stop the spreading of the deadly coronavirus. 

Currently there are 4,728 confirmed active cases 

for the coronavirus in OC and 1069 deaths supposedly 

attributed to the virus as of 9/10/2020 

according to the worldometers website. 

For the most part everyone is feeling that the 

coronavirus pandemic is slowing dissipating and 

people are getting back to work with new 

precautions in place .

Coronaviruses are a group of related viruses that cause 

diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, coronaviruses 

cause respiratory tract infections that can be mild, such as 

some cases of the common cold (among other possible 

causes, predominantly rhinoviruses), and others that can be 

lethal, such as SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. There are yet 

to be vaccines or antiviral drugs to prevent or treat human 

coronavirus infections. 

Discovery 

Human coronaviruses were first discovered in the late 

1960s. The earliest ones discovered were an infectious 

bronchitis virus in chickens and two in human patients with 

the common cold (later named human coronavirus 229E 

and human coronavirus OC43). 

Etymology 

The name “coronavirus” is derived from Latin corona, 

meaning “crown” or “wreath”, itself a borrowing from 

Greek kornē, “garland, wreath”. 

Transmission 

Human to human transmission of coronaviruses is primarily 

thought to occur among close contacts via respiratory 

droplets generated by sneezing and coughing.
