As an artist working in the medium of photography, Vern Minard has a
sharp eye for composition and the dance of light. He recognizes that
light is everything with photography. It brings together the fine details
of composition and feeling, which define the critical essence of an
image. With a natural sense of the different values and characteristics
of light, Vern combines both spontaneity and technical skill to
compose creatively charged images. He is always in wonder of the
world he sees, seeking the magic of the moment. Through his camera,
he becomes an extension of his subject matter, capturing the artistry
all around him and creating a visual message.
Vern’s photography explores the spirit in life that he cannot express in
any other way. He photographs his love for a continuously changing
and evocative world full of visual stories. Every subject contains
a story: subtle nuances, emotions, character, and mood come
alive, drawing Vern’s attention to images that express his intimate
connection with natural and manmade forms, landscape, and people.
Vern explores natural aesthetics within the simplicity of life, creating
images that are personally meaningful to him, invoking the meditative
quality of introspection and respect for life’s artistic palette. His artistic
intent is to reveal the innate beauty of his subjects, drawing the viewer
into an interactive and conscious experience of the world, to become
more present to the beauty in life that we can so often miss.
Vern’s photography is available in archival fine-art print and silver
gelatine for art lovers and collectors. He can also be commissioned
for commercial photo assignments. With more than twenty-five years’
experience in the field of fine-art and commercial photography, Vern
specializes in nature-based and travel photography, with a deep
love for architecture, events, and culinary arts. He has extensive
experience with travel and documentary photography and client
interaction, and is able to problem-solve during a photo shoot while
simultaneously finding the most appealing angles and representation
of the subject.
Vern takes pride in being reliable, easy to work with, and highly
considerate of every aspect of a commercial project. “When it comes
to photography, it is important to commit fully to the client’s desired
outcome,” he says, “while equally being open to the spontaneous,
allowing creativity to discover unthought-of possibilities.”
The beauty of the landscape contains a narrative . . . I listen and I am heard. This relationship with my surroundings on
the Pacific West Coast is the starting point of my experience with nature. My conversation is defined by three elements,
which stand out for me in a very prominent way. Overlooking the ocean and coastal mountain ranges, expanse is definitely
a distinctive characteristic that is hard to deny when looking at British Columbia’s vast landscapes. The second prominent
element is light, which to me is mesmerizing. It leaves a signature on whatever is present; it defines the moment as is, always
leaving it unique. Last but not least are the different textures and the way they communicate with my senses. The bark of a
tree, the softness of the moss, the sand on the beach, the smoothness of a reflection in the water . . .
My intention is to capture the beauty, the expanse, and the feeling that the landscape radiates, so that I can share my
interpretation of this special moment with others. For me it’s really more about re-creating an experience rather than
producing a painting. On a canvas I am able to translate my perspective using paint and to define the moment through these
three prominent elements. On one hand, painting is about captivating the spirit of your surroundings; on the other, there needs
to be an awareness and focus toward shaping the image. I try to find a balance between the two and ”push the paint around”
until my canvas correctly portrays the experience I intend to share. – Marleen Vermeulen
spring 2016 13
Marleen Vermeulen received most of
her art education in the Netherlands,
where she was born. She is a graduate
of the Design Academy in Eindhoven
and the Academy of Fine Arts in
Utrecht.
In the 80s and early 90s, Marleen
enjoyed an extensive international
and award-winning career in graphic
design; she was based in the
Netherlands and United Kingdom until
1994, at which point she moved with
her family to Canada and settled here
on the Sunshine Coast.
Inspired by the natural beauty of the
Pacific West Coast, Marleen began
to focus her talent toward creating
large oil canvases. The sheer scale of
the canvases and the texture of the
oil paint interpret the expanse and
rawness of nature. Over time she has
developed her own signature style; up
close her work feels impressionistic,
sometimes almost abstract, while
from a distance it takes on a realistic
perspective.
“I love living on the Sunshine Coast.
Every single day I am aware of the
true greatness, openness, and beauty
of my surroundings; it is especially
evident to me during my yearly kayak
adventures on the west coast of British
Columbia and daily runs through the
coastal rainforest. This awareness
creates serenity in me and provides
the space I need to find myself within
the busyness of everyday life.”
I began carving in 1993 while working as a carpenter and cabinetmaker in Nova Scotia, where
I was drawn to the local folk-art style of whimsy and vibrant colour. Being very accessible to a
novice, this was a great medium for learning to carve and paint. A unique look began to emerge
in my work, with more intricate detail than is typically seen in folk art. I have done several series
of caricatures, marine creatures, dragonflies, and clocks with carved faces in this style. Most
pieces were made with reclaimed local softwoods and finished with acrylic paints.
While working for Coast Craft Yachts in 2005, I was commissioned to carve a grey whale for
installation as a door panel on one of their boats, and I began to explore the realm of realism.
The first piece was well received and I continued to explore this style, working with the natural
properties of wood and employing light and shadow to heighten the sense of three dimensions
in more two-dimensional work. I began to play with grain patterns in the layout stages of
each piece, and I found I could accentuate curves and other features, thereby providing a
greater sense of depth and texture in the final result. I also explored different hardwoods for
their distinct colour and grain patterns, as well as figured woods, which can give the effect of
dappled light or moving water. This work focused mainly on natural scenes and featured stains
and clear finishes rather than paint.
I have lived close to the sea most of my life, and marine themes have always been prominent
in my art. Wood is a wonderful material to work with, and I find the carving process mentally,
physically, and emotionally rewarding. – Keith Burdon
A newly carved totem pole stood bathed in a red spotlight at the
corner of the Great Hall stage for International Choral Kathaumixw
2014, placed there in a special ceremony at the opening gala
concert. The totem pole had created a buzz around the community
of Powell River for months after Mayor Dave Formosa came up with
the idea of presenting one as top prize to the Choir of the World
at Kathaumixw. Where would the totem pole end up? All week at
performances, both competitions and concerts, audiences listened
to various choirs, wondering which would be declared the best.
St. Stanislav Youth Choir from Ljubljana, Slovenia, a country of two
million people, was announced the winner of the totem pole amid
thunderous cheers at the Gala Closing Concert. The size of Victoria,
Ljubljana is situated in a little corner of the Alps. A delegation from
Powell River travelled to that European country in May 2015 to
present the totem pole to the city. A documentary of the journey by
filmmaker Claudia Medina-Culos can be viewed at kathaumixw.org.
Tla’amin First Nation carver Craig Galligos is working on a second
totem pole for Kathaumixw 2016. Again there is a buzz in the
community about where the new one will end up. This year’s list
of choirs includes those from Hong Kong, Hungary, New Zealand,
Austria, and South Africa, as well as from across the United States
and Canada. Whether from near or far, one of those choirs will
earn a unique prize for its community as a tribute to its choral
performances. Having such an award provides incentive for choirs
to come to Kathaumixw instead of another festival, according to
Artistic Director Paul Cummings.
BC’s own summer orchestra academy, the Pacific Region International
Summer Music Academy (PRISMA), will take place this year June 13–25
in Powell River, BC. The Academy will welcome famous Canadian cellist
Amanda Forsyth to its team of world-renowned guest artists who will instruct
students seeking careers in symphony orchestras. A registered charity now
in its fourth season, the festival attracts more than 5,000 concert-goers
and this year has received a record number of 225 student applicants
from around the world. The selected students will come together to form
the Pacific Philharmonic, with first-rate guest faculty members from varied
backgrounds and orchestras. The festival features five public concerts,
including three full-orchestra symphony concerts, the Guest Artist Gala
Opening and Chamber Concerts, and the Concerto Competition Semi-
Finals and Finals. Beyond its concert series, PRISMA also presents an
annual showcase of talent alongside local musicians, artists, and food
concessions at PRISMA on the Beach, held at scenic Willingdon Beach.
The festival, established in 2012, is an opportunity for enthusiastic
young musicians to prepare for positions in professional orchestras.
PRISMA’s vision is to be a premier North American summer music
school, attracting students by merit and patrons by the quality of the
program to Powell River, a city rich in cultural and musical tradition.
MOUNTAIN GRIND
FRESH AIR PHOTOGRAPHY
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
What is real fitness? Mountain Grind organizers and enthusiastic Pender Harbour residents Silke Linnmann and Amanda Peterson work to remind us that fitness isn’t
about rarefied environments, studios, gyms, or any kind of expensive equipment. It’s about getting our bods over TERRAIN. They devised a challenging course with
crazy obstacles (tires, logs, walls, monkey bars, muck, and a WATER SLIDE) that reminded participants of the essentials of fitness and the importance of teamwork,
and showcased the glorious natural setting of the Pender Harbour area. Fun. Health. Fitness. It’s about getting people moving and getting people outside. After last
year’s inaugural event, this year’s Grind hosted at least 340 participants, including 30 teams. Teams can be recognized by their . . . tutus. Or whatever other zany
costume helps keep team spirit from flagging over the grueling 10 km race. Teams were made up of four or more people, and the minimum age was dropped to
10 years, to encourage family entries. Linnmann and Peterson have put a lot of thought into this event. They are strongly family focused and even include a “mini
grind” for kids at Lions Park. Many volunteer hours go into the Mountain Grind each year to set up and dismantle obstacles, and that strong “Harbour community
spirit” is evident. Lions Park offers vendors, food, music, and a beer garden that opens at 10:00 am for spectators who need some fortification. The endorphins
peak when muddy and scraped participants are awarded prizes (this year a “shower off” station was available) and then sit down to a well-deserved BBQ.
In 1980, Chatelech art teacher Enid Goodman Kelly and her students went looking
for a venue to display the students’ creations. The students, Enid states, “were
enthusiastic and eager to show their parents, family, and community their art.
The Sunshine Coast Art Centre was the perfect choice.” That first year, of what
has come to be known as the “Young People’s Own Show,” Chatelech was the only
school represented. The following year Chatelech invited Elphinstone and Pender
Harbour Secondary to join them. In 1983, Enid Goodman Kelly left Sechelt for a few
years, and in her absence the Sunshine Coast Arts Council took over the reins as
the show’s producer. Shortly thereafter the Arts Council invited Sunshine Coast
elementary schools to join the exhibit.
Y O U N G AR TIS T S
Each year, a call goes out to all elementary and secondary schools on the Sunshine
Coast. The only stipulation is that the work entered is created in the school over
the current school year. The exhibit is divided into two sections. Each runs for
approximately two weeks, with the elementary schools starting and the secondary
schools following. The exhibit has become a favourite among many of the Art
Centre’s visitors, as the students’ work never fails to amaze and often belies the
age of the creators. The heroes of this project continue to be the teachers. Amidst
all of their pressures and deadlines, and competing with a myriad of demands,
Sunshine Coast teachers find time to inspire their students with unique and
educational projects, and in so doing help create the next wave of Sunshine Coast
artists.
This year’s Young People’s Own Show starts with submissions from the elementary
schools running April 20–May 8, followed by the secondary schools May 11–29.
The exhibit is held in the Doris Crowston Gallery at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre,
5714 Medusa Street, Sechelt. Gallery hours are Wednesday–Saturday, 11 am–4
pm, and on Sundays 1–4 pm.
The artistic force behind Simply Warehouse are set to do it again, transforming the warehouse up Field Road into a unique gallery space. The exhibit will
open with an evening reception on Friday, June 3, 5–10 pm; the space will also be open Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and 5, 10 am–5 pm, 1877 Field Road
in Wilson Creek. Artists Kasia Krolikowska, Carol Lafave, Charly Mithrush, Lore Schmidts, and Donna Stewart will be showing in the warehouse for the fourth
year. You will enjoy the varied styles and media of this diverse group: collage, cement and acid stains, oil, acrylic, and encaustic, to name a few. Something
for everyone, artwork of all sizes, plus the fun wall of small, smaller paintings for any space. Following their “pay it forward” campaign, the group will donate
to the SPCA 10 percent of all sales from the opening night. For a unique gallery experience come out, bring your friends, and energize your artistic senses.
“My earliest childhood memories are of the family
home, an original log cabin on Deer Lake in
Burnaby. It was constructed, and reconstructed,
by my father. He spent endless hours improvising,
building, and refinishing. Most of his custombuilding
ideas came from the West Vancouver
homes where he worked as an electrical contractor.
Our home became more than a structure; it was
a treasure chest of living, a visual record of life.
There were the bricks he reused from the original
structure, beams that he reclaimed from an estate
home off Granville, original logs that needed
restoring after an ant infestation, the wood
railing he manufactured to look like a Bavarian
alpine home. I saw the development of our home
as a poetic experience. It was our family’s soul,
constructed by my dad. You can say it is in my DNA
to have an affinity to photograph architecturally
designed custom homes.”
GREAT BUILDINGS THAT MOVE THE SPIRIT HAVE ALWAYS
BEEN RARE. IN EVERY CASE THEY ARE UNIQUE, POETIC,
PRODUCTS OF THE HEART. — ARTHUR ERICKSON
While acknowledging the poetry and soulfulness of
great buildings, Ingeborg Hardman’s approach to
photography is methodical. Hardman recognizes
that the surrounding setting and landscape is a
very important part of the subjective experience
when viewing a custom home. More objective
features such as unique materials, décor features,
and design must also be considered. And above
all, she pays close attention to the lighting.
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
EMBRACE LIGHT. ADMIRE IT. LOVE IT. BUT ABOVE ALL,
KNOW LIGHT. KNOW IT FOR ALL YOU ARE WORTH,
AND YOU WILL KNOW THE KEY TO PHOTOGRAPHY. —
Hardman calibrates the timing of the photography
with the lighting choices for the location. Twilight
and sunset often produce extraordinary photos, and
the long shadows can be used to highlight certain
features or even hide less desirable ones. In addition
to tripod, strobes, lenses, and cameras, she brings
a ladder to each shoot for high vantage points.
Hardman says it is not uncommon for her to be
perched on a ladder outside a home very early in the
morning, snapping photos like some kind of private
detective trying to catch the occupants doing
something nefarious. All images are photographed
both in raw format and lower-resolution JPG images.
These are sent to either a laptop or iPad so that
editing of the compositions can be done on site.
Hardman finds it valuable to be able to assess the
composition and impact of an image in situ. She
will often spend two hours of editing for one hour of
location photography.
The results are exciting. Her attention to the angle of
natural light, inside and out, makes her architecture
photos dance with light and shadow. She also plays
with colour, setting up the vivid blues of our West
Coast seascapes and distant mountains to contrast
with the rich tones of wood and the variable greys
of rock and stone. Her twilight and sunset skies
add depth and complexity. Hardman’s keen eye
for drama is evident in peeps of snowy mountains
over a contemporary rooftop and in the way she
draws attention to the juxtaposition of the straight
lines and angles of a building with the roundness of
natural stone and pebbles. She shows us the poetry
in each image. We can’t wait to see more.
