EDITOR’S LETTER

STARTING OVER

EDITOR

Roberto

Caligaris

In this time of confusion and doubt,

with so many questions and few

reliable answers, we put together our

usual magazine issue to provide you

with a definitive piece of news and

entertainment. At Southern Views

Magazine, contributors, readers,

followers and advertisers continue

to be our top priority. It took a few

months to reorganize but we are

open for business during normal

hours and are minimizing the risk

of Coronavirus transmission by

continuing our practice of having our writers, editors, proofreaders and artists

work remotely. We continue to utilize modern technology to facilitate virtual

meetings and conference calls.

These last few months were extremely hard for small businesses like ours. We

fear it may continue in the near future. Small businesses went into this recession

more fragile than their larger cousins: before the crisis hit, half of them had

less than two weeks’ worth of cash on hand, making it impossible to cover rent,

insurance, utilities, and payroll through any kind of sustained downturn. Facing

mounting bills and absent revenue, many businesses are closing permanently,

rather than drifting further and further into insolvency. When responding to

something like this, companies are not just dealing with dollars and cents. They

are dealing with toxic and pervasive fear and uncertainty.

Supporting local business also supports the local economy. After all, the people

who own these businesses are often your friends and neighbors. We can't think

of a better time to pay it forward by supporting small businesses who have

always been there for you.

weeks of the pandemic, courthouses actually saw a spike in marriages. After

all, the purpose of a wedding is to be a public declaration of commitment

and enduring love, and it’s hard to imagine a more powerful testament to the

durability of two people’s bond than the story of how they survived a pandemic

together, endured the hardships it presented, and made personal sacrifices for

the greater good. As a friend of mine recently put it, in the future, the stories

of couples who married during the coronavirus era will be the stuff of family

legend, and of toasts at anniversary parties. We believe that as soon as people

can throw big weddings, they’ll be back up and running like the pandemic never

happened, because there’s going to be a greater appreciation for these moments.

We are excited to feature in this issue Iain Stewart. He is an exceptional artist,

and outstanding illustrator, a talented watercolorist with world-wide vision.

Iain maintains a studio in Opelika, Alabama, and he is a member of both the

American and National Watercolor societies. Don’t forget to read about W.

C Bradley’s Powerhouse. From local living, special events, and wedding

receptions, the PowerHouse at the Eagle & Phenix Mills provides an organized,

efficient, budget-conscious, and stress-free experience. Lastly, our home decor

section brings you an irresistible mix of beautiful homes, interior design ideas,

informative design trend views and a list of advertisers that you won’t find

elsewhere.

Whether it’s our print magazine, website, video, or social media, we’re going

to continue to inform, inspire and entertain our audience. Together, all of us

will overcome this crisis and move ahead to brighter days. There are definitely

obstacles ahead for all of us. It’s important for us to stay laser-focused on

creating relevant and essential content for consumers and supporting our

partners. That, I believe, will carry the day.

Cheers!

We are glad to feature our wedding/summer issue in June. It is summer, the

height of the wedding season. And yes, with much of the country on lockdown,

some couples have put their plans on hold, but not everyone. During the first

BAILEIGH

MAXWELL

What is the one food you could never give

up? Cheese! I can eat all types of cheese from

charcuterie boards to mac’ and cheese to just

plain cheese dip. I love it! If you could be the

President of the US for one day what’s the

first thing that you would do? Take a spin in

a motorcade, ever since I watched Princess

Diaries I’ve wondered what it's like to ride in

one! What is your biggest everyday pet peeve?

Hearing other people chew, I’m not sure what

it is about it but, it makes my skin crawl! What

do you think is the most important value in a

relationship or friendship? Loyalty, I appreciate

knowing I have a small group of friends and

loved ones that will always have my back.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Jealousy. What is your most marked southern

characteristic? My politeness, I was taught from

a young age to always say yes ma’am and yes sir,

and of course an occasional y’all. How would you

describe your fashion style? Pretty minimalistic,

I like to try new trends but typically can be

found in black and white colors with bold

prints and bright colors here and there. Which

words or phrases do you most overuse? When

someone asks me a question and I can’t hear

them I always reply back “What is it?” I typically

always turn one word responses into phrases. If

you could take a week off from your regular life

to immerse yourself in learning something new,

what would it be? Probably become a dolphin

trainer, I’ve always wondered how trainers did

it and I’ll get to be by the water all day! What

living person, other than family members, do

you most admire and why? Elon Musk, he’s

consistently leading us into the future! He turns

his ideas into a reality, and I admire how he is

able to manage his time and is so determined

to reach his goals. If you could travel anywhere

in the world, where would it be? Greece, the

aesthetic it has is just beautiful and the history

there has always been so interesting to me.

How was your experience with SVM? The best!!

I love having the opportunity to meet so many

new people though my job and the SVM team

was no exception, they were so kind and helpful

throughout the whole experience!. SVM

BACKGROUND

Dr. Maholick has achieved

mastery of the CEREC series

of courses at the Scottsdale

Center for Dental Education.

He is a member of both

the ADA and Western

District of the GDA.

Maholick Innovative Dentistry

Since October 2002 Dr. James T. Maholick has been providing quality, gentle dentistry. He and his experienced

team offer comprehensive examinations and specialize in a wide array of dental services. They perform many services

including cosmetic veneers, teeth whitening, CEREC single visit crowns and restorations, root canals, implant

placement and restorations, periodontal and regular cleanings and much more.

ByEMMALEIGH PERMENTER

The professionals at Maholick Innovative Dentistry strive to meet and

exceed your expectations. Their focus is on delivering the best possible

dental care to their patients. They place a heavy emphasis on continuing

education so that they may be the best team to take care of your dental

needs. SVM spoke to Dr. Maholick about their new location, common

procedures and the current biggest threat to dental health.

You’ve recently made an exciting move from Northlake Drive to Williams

Road, can you tell us what new and returning patients can expect from your

new office? An upscale concierge type of environment. The facility is designed

around providing the best patient experience. We have patient education in the waiting

area. There are movies and stress relieving videos that can be watched during

treatment. Pleasant ambient sound. Most importantly we have a well-trained team

that prides themselves on providing a great patient experience.

You were born and raised in Columbus and after receiving your Doctorate you

decided to move back to Columbus and serve the area. Can you talk about why

you chose to have your dental practice in your hometown? Columbus is home for

me. My wife and I were raised here and most of our family and friends are here. I

believe that Columbus is a great community to raise a family. It has a nice mid-sized

feel without the hustle and bustle of a large city such as Atlanta. There is much

opportunity here and it is in a good location should you like to run to Atlanta or the

beach for the weekend.

What is your most popular dental cosmetic procedure? We perform many reconstructions

to correct severely damaged teeth and improve smiles. One of the more

popular procedures we perform is called “Teeth Express.” When someone has severely

damaged or worn out teeth and we determine that it is time to look at options

that don’t involve using their natural teeth we can now deliver a brand new smile

that stays in place unlike dentures and partials. It is a life altering experience for

many people that have been hiding their smile from a spouse or in social situations.

.

. Photos ByS.SAXON

Teeth whitening is a hot topic these days, but what should someone know

about dental whitening and bleaching before getting the procedure done?

Teeth whitening is a very safe procedure if managed by your dental team. We make

custom trays that help to hold the gel against the teeth increasing its effectiveness

and allowing the patient to remove excess from the gum tissue. The most common

side effect is some increased sensitivity during the process which is usually managed

by decreasing wear times and switching to a sensitive toothpaste for a short period.

Teeth whitening is one of the most cost effective ways to improve one’s appearance

and most achieve a very nice result.

What is one of the most important dental habits you often see patients failing to

do? Lack of daily flossing is tops on this list. Most people still don’t make flossing a

part of their daily routine. This can lead to decay, gum disease, and bad breath. The

number one reason that we take out most teeth today is advanced gum disease and is

easily prevented by simply flossing daily.

You emphasize patient education for better dental health, can you tell us what

is the current biggest threat to dental health? There are two big problems that I

am seeing regularly. Excessive soda drinking especially in the younger generation

is leading to extensive decay that often has to be treated by crowning the affected

teeth. Often by the time I see these patients the damage has already been done and

it is very difficult to manage without more aggressive dental treatment. The other

is extensive decay caused by taking multiple medications in the older population.

Most medications cause varying degrees of dry mouth. As more meds are added

the mouth dries out and decay gets out of control quickly again requiring extensive

dental treatment.

Finish this sentence: The best thing about Columbus is: Its blend of southern

hospitality with a professional climate, offering opportunities often only found in

larger cities. SVM

DIVERSITY

Jennifer and Phoebe have

enjoyed meeting the people

who come here from all

over this country. They come

from all walks of life and

all have a different

perspective on things.

HANDS FREE HOSTING

Hands Free Hosting is a Columbus-based short-term rental management and cleaning company

founded by long time friends Jennifer Lynch and Phoebe Oates. Hands Free Hosting was born

from the need for a cleaning company whose primary focus was on short-term rental units.

ByMARLA CALIGARIS

Owner Phoebe Oates explained to SVM the history behind the

company, their listings in Columbus, and what do they enjoy

most about the business they started.

What is the concept and history behind Hands Free Hosting?

Jennifer had been managing her own short-term rental

units when I approached her with an idea to become partners

and expand her management portfolio. I had been renovating

my own houses for resale as well as for other

property owners, so combining our individual talents

was a natural fit for expansion. As Hands Free Hosting

grew, we saw the need for a cleaning company

whose primary focus was on short-term rental

units. This added another dimension to our already

burgeoning growth. Some owners of these short-term

rentals are comfortable with the rental side of the

business but need help in coordinating the ability

to rapidly clean their units to prepare for their next

guests. This is where Hands Free Hosting makes a

big difference to the owners they serve. Hands Free

Hosting has many cleaning teams that are specially

trained to turn a unit and earn the coveted five-star

review for their clients.

Why should an Airbnb owner contact you as they

start to reopen their rental(s) to guests? We have

found that many owners of residential real estate understand

the increased income potential of converting to short-term rentals. They

enlist our aid to realize that potential and become as “hands-free” as they choose

to be. We remove the worrisome details from the owner utilizing multi-channel

listings and profile management, photography, 24/7 guest communications, cleaning/housekeeping,

provision of linen and toiletries, property maintenance and

restocking of needed supplies. Our goal is to tailor our services to each owner’s

needs.

Hands Free Hosting currently has multiple listings available in Columbus.

Where are they located? Our units run the gamut from a small one-bedroom

apartment to a grand 1882 historic home in the Historic District. We have a stylish

newly-renovated house on Lakebottom Park and a beautifully renovated apartment

in Overlook. Many of our houses are popular for bridal parties. Many brides love

to stay the night before their wedding in one of our Historic District units. They

find it convenient to get ready for the wedding there in the house.

Regarding booking activity, what are you seeing in travel behavior in light of

the COVID-19 pandemic? A lot of the tourism industry

is centered around Ft. Benning. Families come from

all over the country to visit their soldiers on base. Since

Ft. Benning has halted outsiders/visitors from coming

on base and Columbus restaurants are operating at limited

capacity, we are seeing a lot of families utilizing

the house they have rented as a central gathering area.

The Columbus area has been hard hit by the economic

effects of the pandemic as the rest of the country has,

but we are confident that the rental market will rebound

as the country reopens for business.

What do you enjoy most about the business you two

have started? Visitors to Columbus often ask us about

places to eat, things to do, and places to see. We see

ourselves as ambassadors for our city. We love pointing

these things out to our guests to try to maximize the

enjoyment of their stay. We realize that the more those

of us who live here promote our city, the more we all

benefit from it. We have enjoyed meeting the people who come here from all over

this country. They come from all walks of life and all have a different perspective

on things.

What do you think is the most important aspect of your business? The most

important aspect of our business is that we care so much about what we are doing

and how we are doing it. You cannot pay people enough to genuinely care. It is an

innate quality that a person either has or doesn’t have. The success of the people

whose properties we manage is of paramount importance to us. SVM

Headquartered in Beverly

Couture was founded

in 2001 by wife-andhusband

duo Winnie and

Chris Lee. Their passion

and devotion to the bridal

fashion industry have gained them continuous

success. SVM sat down with Maria Kent, owner

of Winnie Couture in Columbus, to learn about

how her new store differs from other bridal

boutiques, the story behind the Winnie Couture

name, and the latest bridal gowns trends.

You worked for a local company for many

years, how did you end up owning your

own retail business? I moved to Columbus in

high school, then went to UGA, and then spent

the first 28 years of my working life at TSYS.

It was an extremely rewarding career, and I

gained experience with leading people, serving

customers, and managing a budget. For my

second career, I decided I really wanted to do

find her dream gown to fulfill her fantasy for

her wedding day.

When you walk into one of our showrooms,

you are instantly immersed in lush decor, sparkling

and closets filled with stunning gowns made

with the finest materials, which explains why it

flawlessly. Winnie Couture also has the advantage

in the fact that we are able to customize

our gowns, which means we are able to fulfill

every single bride's vision.

What, in your opinion, is the appeal of

Winnie Couture bridal design to Columbus

brides? Winnie Couture designs are timeless

and elegant! We pride ourselves on having a

well rounded collection of gowns that can fit

the vision of any bride. Columbus is an ever

growing area and has a demand for couture

and our local retailers where I shop - have known

that fashion is a favorite hobby of mine. Plus

I saw a real need here for a high-end wedding

culture and highly recognized customer

experience proved a great fit for me.

Is there a story behind the Winnie Couture

name? Yes! Winnie Chlomin Lee started Winnie

Couture back in 2001 after she herself was

not able to find a wedding gown that could be

customized to fit her vision. She wanted to be

able to develop an experience any bride would

love. All of our gowns are curated and designed

by her, which shows her excellent craftsmanship,

BOB VARDAMAN

Distinctive Event Planning

EXCLUSIVE

Bob Vardaman offers full-service event planning for both

large and small-scale projects. Regardless how large or small,

whether a quiet cocktail reception or a mega –blowout – Bob

transforms the space, to turn it from a location to a sensation.

By MARLA CALIGARIS

With more than twenty years of experience,

Bob Vardaman creates one-of-a-kind celebratory

experiences, all over the South, for

discerning individuals and companies. As

one of the most experienced wedding and

event planners, Bob utilizes his passion

for bringing people together to celebrate

and combines that with his warmth and

creativity. He understands that emotions can run high during the planning

process and that is why he believes that being a planner is about more than

timelines and checklists. It’s about being a partner, friend, and confidant.

Bob sat down with SVM, and shared some insights into what makes for

great Columbus weddings and corporate events.

33 / SOVIEWSMAG.COM / June - July 2020

How did you get

involved in the event

planning industry? I

never dreamed of being

an Event Planner. I

wanted to be a Broadway

Star. So I studied

theatre in New York

where I ended up in theatre management and

production. Working for a Broadway Producer,

I assisted in “ backers auditions” and learned a

thing or two about the results of a well planned

event. As company manager of the Alabama

Shakespeare Festival, I produced the openings

and galas for the theatre. Before I knew it I was

designing flowers, menus and lighting for weddings

and corporate events.

Service seems to be part of your DNA as an

entrepreneur and a philanthropist: Where

does that come from? I grew up in Columbus

volunteering at museums, theatres and libraries.

At a young age I was taught the meaning of

charity and philanthropy.

You obviously plan many different events

for many types of clients. What’s a common

thread that makes it a Bob Vardaman event?

I would like to think that my events are unforgettable

experiences. Much like a theatrical

production you may remember certain aspects.

Whether you recall the transformation of a

space or an event with an important message

the details stand out as a lasting impression.

THE TRUTH IS MOST WEDDING

TRENDS COME AND GO.

The trick is to choose a look that will

stay relevant without fading out of style.

SVMinterview

What are some of your tips for the newly engaged,

when it comes to planning a wedding?

Communicate what your vision is with each

other and you will find it much easier to create

your personal taste. Listen to each other and

then communicate those ideas to your event

planner.

With social media and having a computer in

the palm of your hands, how has that kind of

access to technology affected how you operate,

and how you plan events. Technology has

been an incredible asset to my work. Immediate

communication with clients and vendors assure

the correct understanding which is key to making

the event a success.

What are some of the current wedding tends

in the South? The truth is most wedding trends

come and go. The trick is to choose a look that

will stay relevant without fading out of style.

Color palettes are a challenge. Neutrals are safe

but I love seeing a bold color scheme.

What are some tips for hosting the perfect

party? I believe that floral centerpieces with

candlelight are always better than a quirky prop.

Hand calligraphy for an invitation is timeless.

Lace wedding gowns and tuxedos only after

6:00, candid photography is always favoured.

Wedding websites are handy and save so much

time for your guests. Also, bridal party gifts are

thoughtful gestures for a wedding party.

What your favorite design trick for sprucing

up a venue? Drape it, light it and rearrange the

furniture. SVM

your special day is unforgettable.

By MARLA CALIGARIS Photos By STACI ADDISON

Whether your dream wedding is intimate and

casual or elegant and formal, the staff at

Callaway Resort & Gardens will assist you

and attend to every detail. SVM spoke to

Pam Bauer, Director of Brand Development

for Callaway, about what makes Callaway

Gardens so unique, the services they provide

and the accommodations they provide for the wedding party and guests.

Callaway Resort and Gardens is well known for its natural beauty and

its amazing location. What sets this place apart from other venues?

First and foremost is our stunning location. We are nestled in the southernmost

foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and over 20 square miles of

Georgia’s natural beauty are available to you and your guests. We are also

steeped in tradition – families have come here for years to enjoy Robin

Lake Beach or Fantasy in Lights. By celebrating this next exciting step in

your life at Callaway, a new tradition begins. Unlike other wedding venues

and banquet halls, couples can return to celebrate with romantic getaways

or with their families as they grow. We have couples who’ve married in the

same enchanting chapel as their grandparents, and others who come back

year after year for their anniversaries. It’s a wonderful thing to get married

at a place that can become part of your own family tradition.

What makes Callaway Resort & Gardens memorable and unforgettable?

With over 2,500 breathtaking acres, Callaway is much more than a

wedding venue. Woodland gardens and sparkling lakes serve as the spectacular

backdrop of every event – and each one is as unique as the couple

celebrating. Whether it’s beside a vibrant sea of azaleas or on a foliagefilled

autumn day, couples can plan their ceremony among the beauty of the

great outdoors and then transition seamlessly to an elegant indoor reception

– with no travel time between locations. And because we are a resort

property, we also offer a variety of ways to extend the celebration outside

of the wedding itself. At Callaway, your wedding can truly be anything you

dream.

WE HAVE COUPLES WHO’VE MARRIED IN THE SAME

ENCHANTING CHAPEL AS THEIR GRANDPARENTS,

and others who come back year after year for their anniversaries. It’s a wonderful

thing to get married at a place that can become part of your own family tradition.

– they can assist you with every detail from full event design to

day-of coordination.

How are couples able to customize their weddings at

Callaway Resort & Gardens? Each wedding at Callaway

can be tailored to suit the tastes and personalities of the

brides and grooms themselves. Our venues allow for a lot of

any way you see fit – from casual buffets to sumptuous sit-down

meals. Our chefs can create everything from traditional cuisine to modern,

eclectic fare. Pre- and post-wedding events are all available as well, from

fun welcome parties and farewell brunches, to formal rehearsal dinners and

bridal teas. Even special group gatherings at our resort attractions – we can

make it all happen.

Do you have a preferred or exclusive vendor list? We do have a list of

preferred vendors – many of whom come from the Columbus or Atlanta

area. We know how important it is to work with knowledgeable, trusted

legwork for them. Because our property is so large, we think it’s especially

important to work with photographers that know the lay of the land. By

working with someone familiar with the grounds, couples can be sure

to get the best shots in an efficient way that doesn’t intrude on the day’s

celebrations.

What types of activities are provided at Callaway Resort & Gardens?

What's nearby? With so much breathtaking acreage, there’s plenty do to!

Wedding guests can use their free time to explore the gardens on foot or by

bike – we have over ten miles of nature trails. Spa treatments, golf outings,

tennis matches – even zip-lining adventures can be planned in advance.

You and your guests can also enjoy our Birds of Prey Show or relax in your

favorite way – fishing, boating, swimming, or even just sunbathing by the

lake or pool. What’s great is you never have to leave the Callaway grounds

to enjoy any of it.

What spaces are available for the ceremony and reception? We have

eight beautiful venues scattered across our property, each one with its own

distinctive feel, so there’s truly something for every taste. Intimate weddings

feel right at home in the legendary Ida Cason Callaway Memorial

Chapel, an enchanting chapel tucked in in the woods, while larger gatherings

enjoy the lake views from the Longleaf Lawn. The Longleaf Ballroom

offers a traditionally festive atmosphere, and the Discovery Center’s airy,

loft-like design brings modern elegance to any event. The Gardens Restaurant

creates a warm and inviting ambience for smaller gatherings, and

the Ski Pavilion is a blank slate with lake views that are nothing short of

spectacular. SVM

POWERHOUSE

At The Eagle & Phenix Mills

History can be found in every corner of Columbus, but none are as prevalent as

in the corners of Eagle & Phenix Mills. For over a century, Eagle & Phenix Mills has been a

part of Columbus and continues to evolve with the city’s diverse community. From local

living, special events, and wedding receptions, the PowerHouse at the Eagle & Phenix Mills

provides an organized, efficient, budget-conscious, and stress-free experience.

With a rich and varied history, the Power-

House at the Eagle & Phenix Mills is a look

back in time that creates a unique yet elegant

backdrop for any occasion. Renovated

and preserved for decades, this structure is

almost as old as Columbus and continues

to serve its community in various ways.

Whether it’s for residential or commercial

use, the PowerHouse at the Eagle & Phenix

Mills persists as the local “go-to” place for event planning and downtown

living. The Eagle & Phenix Mills is well known for their condominiums and

apartments, while the PowerHouse is the event venue near the mills. But to

know what Eagle & Phenix Mills has to offer, it is important to understand

its history and how it all got started.

The PowerHouse was the main power supply providing the necessary energy

to drive the Eagle and Phenix Mills. By diverting water from the Chattahoochee,

the PowerHouse harnessed the water and used it to turn multiple

large turbines creating hydroelectric power for the Mills. The very early

history of the PowerHouse at the Eagle & Phenix Mills began in 1860 when

cotton milling operations were run by William H. Young after he absorbed

the nearby Howard Factory. From this point on, Eagle Mills (as it was called

then) became the second largest mill in the state of Georgia. During this

time, the Eagle Mill No. 1 produced material for Confederate uniforms and

other critical goods during the Civil War. But because of poor and slow communication

Mill No. 1 was caught in a terrible accident.

After generals Lee and Grant had already signed a treaty to end the war, a

land battle was still being fought in the Columbus area where soldiers were

unaware of the recent end to the war. The federal forces overwhelmed the defenders

of Columbus and crossed the river to burn the Eagle Mills buildings.

Conveniently located to downtown and within walking distance of local nightlife,

THE POWERHOUSE OFFERS THE BEST OF

DOWNTOWN COLUMBUS’ EATERIES AND HOTELS

including the newest food hall “Banks Food Hall” and the currently-in-construction Hotel Indigo.

In 1869, Mill No. 1 was rebuilt after this tragic incident and renamed

Eagle & Phenix Mills to symbolize rising from the ashes.

Over the next decades, several renovations and new buildings

would be created, most of which are still present today. The historic

buildings that remain on site include the Boiler House and

Administration Building (1878), and the Machine Shop (1886),

and the PowerHouse, which currently can be rented out as a

private event venue by visiting powerhouse-events.com. During

these years of expansion, the Eagle & Phenix quadrupled its size

and became the largest mill in the south. In addition to being the largest

mill in the south, it was distinctively known for its technological sophistication,

producing over 100 varieties of cotton and woolen goods.

This period of rapid expansion would not last as it was followed by economic

failure brought on by changes in the market. The mill was purchased

by G. Gunby Jordan in 1896 with one of his investors being W. C. Bradley.

During this time, various correspondences between Mr. Jordan and Mr.

Bradley suggest that Mr. Bradley accept presidency of the mill. So, from

1915 to 1947 Bradley was president and owner of Eagle & Phenix Mills.

After Mr. Bradley’s presidency of the mill ended in 1947, several different

companies owned the property including Reeves Brothers, Inc., Fieldcrest

and Pillowtex. Over the extent of its 150-year history, the mill underwent

modifications and renovations to its structure. But in December of 2003,

the mill property was repurchased by W. C. Bradley Co., and as the present

owners, they are dedicated to preserving history and restoring the mills to

their original state from the early 1900s.

A part of these renovations includes a $3 million project to restore the

two historic powerhouses that sit on an island in the Chattahoochee River

behind Mill No. 3. This makes the PowerHouse the only event venue in

Columbus located on the Chattahoochee River for a beautifully unique

location. Conveniently located to downtown and within walking distance

of local nightlife, the PowerHouse offers the best of downtown Columbus’

eateries and hotels including the food hall “Banks Food Hall” and the

currently-in-construction Hotel Indigo. The PowerHouse boasts 14,000

square feet of indoor space and 10,000 square feet of outdoor space. There

are three different levels –Upper, Lower, and Forebay— that can collectively

hold 400 guests for private events.

Regardless of the level of an event being held, all events include the

Forebay and the other levels cannot be rented out separately on the same

night to ensure maximum privacy. The preferred caterers for PowerHouse

events include Epic, 11th & Bay, Southern Style Catering, Bare Roots, and

Country’s BBQ. PowerHouse is a perfect wedding venue option because of

their convenient location and abundance of onsite services. These services

are streamlined through Outdoor Events and include things such as: rental

equipment; professional photography and videography; site preparation;

entertainment, catering, security, and sanitation coordination; and much

more. Tours of the Powerhouse are available upon request, and they are

flexible to accommodate most schedules.

Through the years Eagle & Phenix Mills has been a vibrant part of the

history of Columbus. With the end of the textile industry in the southern

United States, this beautiful property has now been re-developed as a

mixed-use residential and commercial community that is once again the

pride of Columbus, Georgia. SVM

CONGRATS, YOU ARE A

Bridesmaid

A tradition that goes back to the ceremony of marriage itself, the bridal party

would never be complete without the bridesmaids. More than just a beautiful

procession, the bridesmaids contribute to the artistry and ease of the overall

marriage ceremony. Like a bow tied on loose ends or a cherry on top of a sundae,

bridesmaids hold together and complete a wedding in both beauty and function.

By emmaleigh permenter

Being chosen as a bridesmaid is a wonderful honor in both tradition and friendship.

Bridesmaids are considered fun and functional partners for the bride on her big day,

but the history of the bridesmaid goes back farther than modern expectations. Many

duties and superstitions were once associated with the role of the bridesmaid and

some traces can still be found today in modern ceremonies.

All the way back to ancient Roman times, it was required by law to have 10 witnesses

present for a wedding ceremony. Bridesmaids (and groomsmen) would be

dressed alike to match the bride and groom to ward off vengeful spirits or confuse jealous suitors. In

the Victorian era, bridesmaids helped make party favors that included ribbons or flowers that would be

pinned to guests of the wedding as they left the ceremony.

Even in history bridesmaids carried out important duties for the wedding and those traditions have

helped shape modern ceremonies today. But today’s wedding ceremonies no longer have to be steeped

in tradition or superstitions. Today, weddings are fun events where family and friends come together

to celebrate love. And if you have been chosen to be a bridesmaid –or are the one choosing—here are

some great things to keep in mind for that special day.

When attending a dress fitting, remember to wear similar undergarments and shoes to what you will be

wearing on the big day. Also, bring some hair clips with you to see how the dresses will look if your

hair is going to be tied up. If you cannot go dress shopping with the bride, make sure to get a professional

fitting done with exact measurements before ordering your dress. A bridesmaid may be present

for wedding planning, but it is important to only give your opinion about something when asked. And

when the big day finally arrives, remember to provide support to the bride so that the ceremony can be

as smooth as possible.

SVM

WEDDINGS

Whether you are selecting a bridesmaid or have been

honorably chosen as one, remember that sharing love and joy

on the wedding day is the most important decision to make.

That is why, above all else, it is important for the bride to choose bridesmaids that are her closest

friends, family, and confidants. The wedding ceremony will need to reflect the unique and genuine love

between the bride and groom, and who better to help shape that image than the friends and family who

have watched them fall in love from the beginning. Bridesmaids may have to help make countless decisions

from table displays to flower arrangements, but the most important duty they hold is companionship.

When preparing for the special day, keep in mind the importance of family and friendship when selecting

a bridal party. Because when the vows are spoken and the cake has been cut, the only things left

will be photographs and memories. So, whether you are selecting a bridesmaid or have been honorably

chosen as one, remember that sharing love and joy on the wedding day is the most important decision to

make.SVM

DRINK OF

THE MONTH

Champagne

BOLLINGER

Since 1829, Bollinger has been producing

great champagnes with a powerful,

sophisticated and complex style.

With a taste steeped in tradition, Bollinger champagne is truly the finest in

elegant celebration wines reserved for only the most memorable occasions.

Bollinger continues to craft rich history and beauty into every glass so that their

wine can be the pinnacle champagne experience everyone enjoys.

By EMMALEIGH PERMENTER

Bollinger’s story began with Athanase de Villermont,

the youngest son of a noble family.

He foresaw the extraordinary potential of the

wines of Champagne, but as an aristocrat he was

forbidden to become involved in trade. But after

meeting Joseph Bollinger, a German man who

left his country to learn about the Champagne

wine trade, and Paul Renaudin, a local man who

was fascinated by the world of wine, the firm of

Renaudin-Bollinger & Cie was founded on February

6, 1829. Since then, the company has endured through the centuries

without losing their quality and passion from long ago.

Covering 178 hectares, the Bollinger vineyard features the Premier cru Pinot

Noir grape variety that has the intense character which forms the backbone

of the Bollinger style. A taste that is both elegant and complex can

only be found in Bollinger champagne for which they have been awarded

the Royal Warrant from the Court of England since 1884. The relationship

between the British and Bollinger continues as the champagne House appeared

in Ian Fleming’s fourth Bond novel, Diamonds are Forever and has

been in Bond films since Live And Let Die.

This exquisite quality can only be from Bollinger’s passion for excellence

in their wine making process. Ancestral techniques such as hand

riddling, reserves and vintage cuvées stoppered with natural corks, and a

resident cooper have proved to guarantee the highest quality. Because of

this, Bollinger is the first champagne House to obtain the highly respected

Patrimoine Vivant (living heritage) seal of quality which recompenses

exceptional craftsmanship and skill. So, for your special occasion, share in

Bollinger’s passion for excellence, sense of refinement, and consummate

elegance in every glass.

LIZ TAYLOR

&

RICHARD BURTON

A passionate romance that sparked the fascination of the masses,

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s union is forever remembered

as a love affair that may have lasted a lifetime.

By EMMALEIGH PERMENTER

In 1962, romance blossomed between Elizabeth Taylor

and Richard Burton on the set of Cleopatra. Their

tumultuous relationship would be built on irresistible

chemistry, vicious fights, and a luxurious lifestyle with

awe-inspiring gifts. Even though their affair would be

the subject of ridicule, they still fascinated the public

and media with their lavish lifestyle and controversial

relationship. Through a decade-long first marriage,

a divorce, a short-lived remarriage, and a second divorce,

the bond between them wasn’t easily broken.

TAYLOR DIDN'T WANT TO

BE A 'NOTCH ON HIS BELT'

It wasn't love at first sight for Taylor and Burton. A

decade before filming Cleopatra, they'd met at a party where his reputation

as a womanizer had Taylor deciding, "I’m not gonna become a notch on

his belt." But late on, they came together again to make Cleopatra, which

starred Taylor as the Egyptian queen and Burton as Cleopatra’s paramour

Mark Antony.

THEIR VOLATILE RELATIONSHIP

WAS A PUBLIC SPECTACLE

The romance they were acting out in front of the cameras carried over into

real life and the public noticed as paparazzi snagged a photo of the two on

a yacht in Ischia. According to sociologist Ellis Chasmore, this photo was

the beginning of the celebrity struggle to keep public and personal lives

separate. When John Glenn orbited the earth, some front pages preferred to

feature Taylor and Burton instead. Condemnation of what the two dubbed

MARRIAGE OF

THE CENTURY

Only days after Taylor's

divorce was actually

finalized, the couple wed

on March 15, 1964 in a

ceremony at the Ritz-

Carlton in Montreal,

beginning what has been

referred to as "the

marriage of the century."

This would be the first of

the couple's two

marriages, which both

ended in divorce.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 52 "le scandale" included an open letter in

the Vatican City's weekly paper that denounced their "erotic vagrancy."

Their romance was intense and not without its shortcomings.

Both Taylor and Burton were heavy drinkers, and they

didn't hold back from screaming at and fighting with each

other. According to studio head Spyros Skouras, in one violent

altercation with Burton, Taylor "got two black eyes, her

nose was out of shape, and it took 22 days for her to recover

enough in order to resume filming." Taylor, however, attributed her injuries

to a car accident. Throughout the troubled production of Cleopatra, their

romance continued, as did the attention it drew.

TAYLOR AND BURTON WERE IN OTHER

RELATIONSHIPS WHEN THEY GOT TOGETHER

Taylor was not only a world-famous movie star; she'd already been tabloid

fodder for being the "home-wrecker" behind the end of Debbie Reynolds

and Eddie Fisher's marriage. Taylor's relationship with Fisher had begun

in grief after Taylor's third husband, Mike Todd, died in a plane crash, she

and his friend Fisher grew close. Fisher eventually became her fourth husband

but now she felt the marriage had run its course, and he was unable to

do anything to stop the freight train of Taylor and Burton's romance.

On the other hand, Burton had subjected his wife Sybil to numerous

infidelities. During his romance with Taylor, she expected her husband

to return to her, as he'd always done. But Burton found he couldn't stop

seeing Taylor, who was so enraptured that she overdosed on sleeping pills

when Burton tried to leave her. She later said, "We did try and resist. My

marriage with Eddie was over, but we didn’t want to do anything to hurt

Sybil."

THEIR RELATIONSHIP WAS FILLED

WITH LUXURY AND CONFLICT

It took time to officially end things with their respective spouses, but nine

days following Taylor's divorce from Fisher, Burton and Taylor married

in Montreal on March 15, 1964. Their blended family included an adopted

girl, Taylor's daughter from her third marriage and two sons from her

second marriage. Burton had two daughters of his own with Sybil. But

instead of sinking into humdrum domesticity, their married life continued

to enthrall observers. As Burton noted, "For some reason, the world has

always been amused by us two maniacs."

After meeting on the set of Cleopatra, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton

began what would become one of the most iconic, albeit tumultuous, love

stories of all time.

TAYLOR HAD AN AFFAIR

WITH RICHARD BURTON

on set of Cleopatra while married to

Eddie Fisher. She wore a yellow babydoll

dress to their wedding in 1964.

Together, Burton and Taylor partied hard and drank heavily. They owned

homes across the globe and traveled the world, usually renting the hotel

suites above and below their own because their passionate fights could get

loud. They bought valuable artwork, a yacht, a private plane, and luxury

cars.

Burton, who wrote in 1971, "I love Elizabeth to the point of idolatry," often

presented Taylor with jewels. These included the 69-carat Taylor-Burton

diamond, the 50‐carat La Peregrina Pearl, and the 33-carat Krupp diamond.

As the Krupp family had helped make German weaponry during World

War II, Taylor noted, "I always thought it was kind of poetic that a nice

Jewish girl like me gets to wear it."

THEIR ACTING CAREERS CONTINUED TO BOOM

Taylor and Burton's lifestyle was an expensive one, but they were able to

afford it thanks to their successful acting careers. When they began their affair,

Taylor had been the true movie star while Burton had earned more respect

for his roles on stage, but their romance lifted his profile and boosted

his status in Hollywood. She gave him tips for a successful film career as

his level of stardom rose.

In addition to separate projects, they co-starred in a total of 11 films. Public

interest generated by their off-screen relationship helped many of these

movies succeed even when they weren't very good. But critics appreciated

their work in the 1966 adaptation of Edward Albee's play Who’s Afraid of

Virginia Woolf?, which landed Taylor her second Academy Award for

Richard and Elizabeth during a promotional visit to Paris in 1963.

THEIR LOVE WAS AS

UNPREDICTABLE AS A VOLCANO

Taylor and Burton divorced, got remarried and then divorced again. Even

on-screen their lives seemed filled with conflict as Taylor and Burton costarred

in a television movie, Divorce His, Divorce Hers, in 1973. The title

proved prescient. Throughout their marriage, they had clashed and fought,

earning the nickname "the Battling Burtons." Their conflicts and ongoing

drinking became so great that the two divorced in 1974.

The couple reconciled and re-wed in Botswana in October

1975, but the second marriage was over in less than a

year. Taylor said, "We had a good marriage. Something

went wrong, but we're still good friends. I know I did

everything in my power to make the marriage work."

Burton seemed to understand why their time together

was over. "Elizabeth and I lived on the edge of an

exciting volcano. I'm not easy to be married to or live with. I exploded

violently about twice a year with Elizabeth. She would also explode. It

was marvelous. But it could be murder."

Though they both moved on to other spouses— in 1976, Burton wed

Susan Hunt, while Taylor tied the knot with Virginia politician John

Warner— their connection continued. They often spoke on the phone and

were together for her 50th birthday celebration in 1982. "Elizabeth and I

will never remarry," Burton told reporters after taking her home that night.

"She may marry someone else, and so may I, but we will always be drawn

back to each other."

The couple walking in the streets of Rome in the summer of 1971.

TAYLOR SAID BURTON SENT HER ONE LAST

LETTER SHORTLY BEFORE HIS DEATH;

his widow denied this was possible. But according to Taylor, Burton

expressed his desire to come home to her. She shared his sentiments.

TAYLOR SAYS BURTON WROTE HER A

LOVE LETTER BEFORE HIS DEATH

In 1983, Taylor and Burton appeared together in a revival of the Noel

Coward play Private Lives, about a divorced couple who reconnect while

honeymooning with new partners. Public fascination with Taylor and Burton

was ongoing, so tickets sold well. However, the reviews were terrible,

and Taylor missed several performances due to physical ailments. During

one of her absences, Burton married his fourth wife, Sally Hay.

On August 5, 1984, a cerebral hemorrhage claimed

58-year-old Burton's life while he was sleeping in

his Swiss home. Taylor didn't attend his funeral or

memorial service in Wales, as his widow was wary

of creating a spectacle. Taylor was at a service at a

London church, where attention focused on her. The

year of his death she also placed roses on his grave at

Christmas.

Taylor said Burton sent her one last letter shortly before his death; his widow

denied this was possible. But according to Taylor, Burton expressed

his desire to come home to her. She shared his sentiments. As she said in

an interview with Vogue, "I was still madly in love with him the day he

died. I think he still loved me, too." The letter was reportedly buried with

Taylor after she died in 2011. SVM

IAIN

STEWART

An exceptional artist and outstanding illustrator, Iain Stewart is a

talented watercolorist with world-wide vision. Iain maintains a studio

in Opelika, Alabama, and he is a member of both the American and

National Watercolor societies. He is truly a defining artist of our era

and contributing mentor for the art community in Alabama.

By emmaleigh permenter

Born in Scotland and raised in the South, Iain Stewart

has a unique perspective on the world around us.

Watching his father’s gentle brushstrokes introduced

him to the realm of watercolor from which he has

never looked back. With an eye that catches detail

and transposes it into paint, his watercolor fine-art

paintings have garnered attention around the world.

His artistic process involves expressing atmospheric

light in a way that is natural and also ethereal as he chooses to paint what

the mind’s-eye sees rather than stark representations of reality. Throughout

the years his repertoire has grown into a comprehensive collection of

American watercolor art and he has been a contributing member to both

the American and National Watercolor societies.

Tell us a little about yourself, your art, and what inspired you to

become an artist? I’ve always drawn and painted. It’s been my life. I was

also good at it from a young age. I was born in Scotland and we moved to

the States in the mid-70s. I’m a sort of hybrid Scottish-Southerner. Suffice

it to say I knew I would do something with the arts. I finally decided on

architecture and that has shaped me ever since. Architecture, I feel, is the

grandfather of all the arts. It encompasses everything. It is a fantastic education,

grueling, yes, but worth every minute. As I moved through design

school it became very apparent that I could do very competent presentations.

That followed me through my first jobs as a designer and eventually

I took a job in DC as the in-house illustrators for one of the largest firms in

the world. They worked me to the bone— they took everything I had.

MY CAREER HAS TAKEN ME PLACES

I never dreamed of. I’ve walked ancient

roads and painted in markets and street

corners all over the world.

I realized I was going to lose my drive and went out on my own in 2002.

After the market crash in 2008 my illustration work dried up. I spent a

long time thinking about what I would do. I had some savings and my

wife drew a steady paycheck, so as a team we agreed I would take a

couple of years and become the painter I had always thought I could be.

You work as a fine art watercolorist and as an architectural illustrator,

do you think these two different artistic processes have helped

you develop your personal art style? I do. I received my degree in

Architecture from Auburn University. I never had a formal art education

but find that how I was taught to address design and use multiple iterations

of a single design problem has helped me approach my personal work

from a unique perspective. I do many studies before starting a painting.

Much like illustration I sketch my ideas out and, instead of submitting to a

design team, I review them myself. I typically find that most of my better

paintings are the result of working through the process and not moving too

quickly to “just get something on paper.” Going back and forth between

the two disciplines can be challenging but it keeps my mind working on

many different levels, seeking solutions to any situation I am presented

with. My most cherished possessions are my sketchbooks.

Do you have a favorite subject to paint? Is there something that when

you see it you think “I want to capture this moment on paper”? Oh, it

can be anything. I am drawn to architectural subjects

given my background— but I am constantly

looking at the world and thinking to myself “oh

man, I have to paint that.” I find that if I stay

focused on one subject for too long, I get a little

bored. I do love searching for those places people

walk by every day and think nothing of them.

Taking a mundane scene and transforming it into

something a local would have never thought worthy

of a minute’s glance, let alone a painting, is so

very enjoyable.

SVMinterview

Your watercolor paintings

depict beautiful far off places

like Paris and Istanbul.

How important is travelling

to your artistic process? I

believe travel brings out the

best in us by putting us in uncomfortable

situations. Yes, Paris is beautiful, but

you have to be able to manage the city. The same

can be said for anywhere you don’t know. The

discovery, the wonder, are what push me to get up

before the sun and get moving. I eventually find

my favorite little spots and will get to know a local

cafe where I return most days. I don’t speak very

good French. I’m like a 5-year-old with similar vocabulary

but I try. If people notice you making an

effort, they tend to be helpful. My career has taken

me places I never dreamed of. I’ve walked ancient

roads and painted in markets and street corners all

over the world. It’s truly a striking thing when I

sit down and think about it. I’ve been incredibly

fortunate.

Is there an artist who has been influential in

your life in regard to your artwork? More than

I can count. My father is probably the most influential

because I watched him work from a very

young age. He rarely gave me structured lessons

but rather allowed me to watch. Seeing him take

a blank sheet of paper and turn it into something

extraordinary and the joy he takes in that will

always be with me. As for others, I’ve mentioned

a couple but if I could really sit down and watch

someone paint Arthur Melville of the Glasgow

Boys would be at the top of the list along with

Sargent, Homer, Constable, et al. I was born in

Scotland and Melville’s work has always moved

me. I would be remiss if I didn’t add Charles

Rennie Mackintosh to that list as well.

You are a member of both the American and

National Watercolor societies and you have

received a number of awards for your work,

but is there one particular achievement that

stands out the most for you? I have had mentors

of sorts over the years. My father Muir is a

watercolorist and I began there. I studied under

Samuel Mockbee in University and he pushed

me to move past what was needed and seek the

spectacular in any circumstance. As I moved into

professional rendering, two of my favorite illustrators

were William Hook and Thomas Schaller.

You have several watercolor workshops coming

up this year, can you talk a little about

what prospective students can expect from

these opportunities? Well this year is unique

I BELIEVE THE SOUTH

IT’S VERY MUCH

ABOUT THE PEOPLE.

all of my workshops through May. It’s a tough

situation but health and safety outweigh my

teaching. As we move through this, I have

many workshops scheduled in the late summer

and fall as well as a few exhibitions that have

been rescheduled. Typically, I like to focus on

painting scenes that will translate into most

situations my students will wish to paint. We

have to look at sky, water, landscapes, and of

course, the urban environment.

What do you like most about living in the

south? My parents came here from Glasgow

when I was very young. I did not have a typical

southern upbringing. My parents were learning

the culture as well. I believe the South is actually

a lot like Scotland. It’s very much about

the people. The south is subtle, the humor, the

way of life, the beauty. SVM

Laura Wheeler Waring

1887-1948

Untitled (Still Life with

Tulips and Figurine)

Oil on canvas board

Provided by The

Alma Thomas Society

Laura Wheeler Waring was an exceptional artist whose talents

show the skill and grace required of a professional portraitist.

This piece is an untitled work known as "Still Life with Tulips

and Figurine" and shows Waring’s delicate skill with oil on

canvas board. Amongst other pieces, her work shows soft transitions

with bold statements as her repertoire boasts portraits of subjects such

as W.E.B. DuBois, George Washington Carver, Marian Anderson, James

Weldon Johnson, and others.

She was born May 6, 1887 in Connecticut to Reverend Robert Foster and

Mary Wheeler. Her impressive academic career began when she graduated

from Hartford High School with honors and later attended Pennsylvania

Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. She then went on to win the Cresson

Memorial Scholarship, where she studied in Paris at the Académie de la

Grande Chaumière. But her trip was short lived due to the outbreak of World

War I. Wheeler returned to Pennsylvania to direct the art and music departments

at the historically black Cheyney State Teachers College, where she

met her husband Walter E. Waring.

Eventually, Waring returned to Europe, and during her visit she produced her

first paintings, some of which would be exhibited in Paris art galleries. One

piece, Houses at Semur, which she painted in France, received wide acclaim.

With European recognition, Waring’s work was now in demand in American

galleries including the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Brooklyn

Museum, and others. In 1943 the Harmon Foundation, a New York City organization,

commissioned Waring to paint for their series “Portraits of Outstanding

American Citizens of Negro Origin” which was developed to recognize

the achievements of African Americans.

Even with her worldwide status as a first-class artist, Waring remained

dedicated to teaching art to young black Americans. Throughout her years of

formal training in both American and European schools, her personal work

chooses to display simpler images and the lives of African Americans in

beautiful detail. SVM

Robert Greene was the originator and career man of the Columbus Fire Department.

Mr.Greene was a founding member of the first official fire company, the Columbus Hook & Ladder

Company, organized in 1843. Volunteer groups existed earlier in Columbus but this official company

was composed of about thirty initial members who responded to fight fires in Columbus.

E

very city has its unsung public servants.

Those individuals that contribute their time

and talent to the development of the city they

serve are the essential cogs of the machine that

without, there would be no machine to run at

all. Columbus has been no different from other

successful cities in benefiting from the quiet

work of dedicated public servants.

In the early years of development of the City

of Columbus, for the young settlement to

remain on the map there was almost no choice

for those invested in its survival but to contribute

to the public good of the city, in addition

to, developing their own private interests.

By Jack Schley

To support the public town was to grow the customer base for private industry

and in those earliest years for small cities, many city positions were filled by

unpaid volunteers. Those jobs might not have been considered positions of

great honor but were nonetheless essential to a fully functioning city and now,

as an established and thriving city, Columbus can look back and bestow recognition

on those early public servants who contributed to creating the machine

that continues to run today. One such public servant from the early years in

Columbus’ history, one of many whose names might, but should not be forgotten,

is Robert H. Greene.

Robert Greene was a native Virginian having been born in Brunswick County,

VA, in 1805. At the age of 19, he began a life in public service as a Deputy

Sheriff of his home county. In 1828 he married a fellow Virginian named Mary

Peebles. They moved as a family with their first-born child, a daughter named

Eliza, to Georgia in the 1830s arriving in Milledgeville.

First motorized fire truck at Old Fire Station on 6th Avenue in Columbus.

Robert then settled his family in Columbus in 1839 where he “engaged in

merchandise.” He first appears in public service in 1842 when Robert served

on a Muscogee County Grand Jury. Though not a voluntary duty, that was

Robert’s first position in a career serving the City of Columbus. His legacy,

however, is as an originator and career man of the Columbus Fire Department.

Fire! To the residents of a town constructed mostly of wood, the threat of

fire was ever present and could strike fear and dread into those perceiving it.

Robert Greene was a founding member of the first official fire company, the

Columbus Hook & Ladder Company, organized in 1843. Volunteer groups

existed earlier in Columbus but this official company was composed of

about thirty initial members who responded to fight fires in Columbus.

ON THE MORNING OF OCTOBER 9, 1846,

the most destructive fire in Columbus' short history

turned the business district of downtown into a

scene of raging flames and drifting ash.

These first firefighters updated their equipment in 1844 to an engine company.

The first engine arrived with much fanfare as the men of the company,

in full uniform, escorted the engine wagon into the company building on

Front Avenue at 11th Street. This engine was likely a simple horse drawn

wagon carrying a large tank that could discharge water through hand powered

pumps. In short time after its arrival, the engine proved to be of minor

benefit due to the lack of available water within the city.

Progress was underway, however, as in April of 1844 the City of Columbus

entered into a contract to have aqueducts carry spring water into the city

from a spring near present day Lakebottom Park. Leonard’s Spring, as it

remains known today in Midtown, discharged 150 gallons of fresh water a

minute at the time of the contract. Wooden pipes were eventually built to

act as the aqueducts but these pipes captured only a fraction of the water

discharged by the spring. It was estimated in 1853 that three-fourths of that

captured water was lost by the time it reached downtown. The improvement

of this system was a major concern to the city at the time as only fifty

hydrants out of a necessary three hundred were able to be used under those

conditions. This was the only public source of fresh water in the city at

that time. The lack of available water to fight fires remained a problem in

Columbus as late as 1912 when, what is known as the Fifth Avenue Fire,

could not be controlled due to a lack of water and resulted in the destruction

of Kim forty-two with Gal homes. Gadot a.k.a Wonder Woman.

Early wagon used by firefighters were pulled by horses and

carried a limited amount of water. Hamilton fire engine circa 1835.

In addition to his services as a firefighter in 1845, Robert Greene

also served as a Health Officer to the city. This position likely

involved overseeing the health of a particular ward of the town

and advising city leaders on managing the public health of the

city.

Health and fire became the defining subjects of the year 1846

in Columbus when the fear of a wooden town engulfed in

flames became very real. On the morning of October 9, the

most destructive fire in the City’s short history turned the business district of

downtown into a scene of raging flames and drifting ash. As families fled their

homes and store clerks abandoned their desks, the wave of flames destroyed

residences, warehouses, stores, stables, and market buildings across multiple

city blocks along the river. Miraculously, no human deaths were reported

following the fire but 700 personal injuries resulted along with $250,000 in

household damages at the time. When adjusted for inflation, this loss amounts

to over $8 million in damages in today’s money. Robert Greene, and many

other volunteers, likely participated in the fight to control and extinguish the

disaster that began in a blacksmith shop near the courthouse. The news of

the devastation the fire caused in Columbus spread across the region and the

city governments of Savannah, Macon, Montgomery, and Columbus donated

money and goods to relieve the families that lost property to the fire. The

Governor of Georgia also delayed the collection of taxes in Columbus due to

the disaster.

In the years immediately following the Great Fire of 1846, Robert Greene

was twice elected as City Treasurer of Columbus. It is interesting to note that

around the time of Robert Greene’s election, the position of City Treasurer

received an annual salary of $600; while the Mayor received only $500. The

City of Columbus operated on a budget of about $25,000 during Robert’s first

tenure as City Treasurer. Robert resigned from this position, however, nearly

halfway through his 1849 term. This was likely due to health concerns or possibly

business opportunities as he does not appear again in a city position until

1855 when he resumed his work as a Fire Warden for the City. His career in

Columbus also included serving as the Teller for the Columbus branch of the

Mechanics’ Bank for thirteen years. This position could be where his career

in finance began. His experience in finance and in firefighting overlapped as

Robert also served as Treasurer of Fire Company #1 in 1848 while he held the

position of City Treasurer.

1- Eliza E Greene Schley (1830-1883) wife of Thomas B Schley, and daughter

of Robert H and Mary P Greene. She was the only child to marry and she did

so in 1849 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbus. 2- Hand Engines and

Steam Engines used in Columbus . 3- The old bell tower at 11th and Broadway,

Columbus, circa 1902. When a fire broke out, an individual would climb up the

tower and ring the bell. The number of rings from the bell indicated the ward of

town where the fire was burning.

While continuing as a volunteer firefighter, the position of City Treasurer was

again filled by Robert Greene from 1865 to 1868 while the City was under

military rule following the War Between the States. It was during this time

that the first black City officials served the City of Columbus; however, Robert

had served with African American firefighters before when thirty-six of the

seventy-one members of Columbus Fire Company #1 were African American

in 1860.

At home, Robert and his wife Mary raised five children to adulthood in their

house on 15th Street. The eldest daughter, Eliza, was the only child to marry

and she did so in 1849 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbus. Eliza moved

to her husband’s farm in Chattahoochee County and her parents, sisters Minerva,

Mary, and Emma, and brother John remained at the 15th Street family

home for the remainder of their lives. A niece of these Greene family siblings

later described the home on 15th Street as “a charming place to visit.” John

M. Greene served alongside his father in Fire Company #1 in the 1860s and

eventually became a proprietor of the Columbus Sun weekly newspaper.

When Robert died in 1870, he was one of two remaining founders of Fire

Company #1 in Columbus. After a quarter of a century career as a firefighter

in Columbus, he was honored by his fellow company men who escorted his

coffin from the Greene family home to its final resting place in Linwood

Cemetery. Robert and Mary Greene’s only descendants through their daughter

Eliza remain in Columbus to this day. Robert’s great-great-great grandson

even served as a local volunteer firefighter for several years in the 1990s.

Improvements in efficient firefighting continued in Columbus long after

Robert Greene’s career. In 1882, a ninety-foot tower was assembled at the

intersection of Broadway and 11th Street across from the iron bank. Near the

top of the tower was a bell. When a fire broke out, an individual would climb

up the tower and ring the bell. The number of rings from the bell indicated the

ward of town where the fire was burning.

This bell was also rung every day at 11:00 AM by Mr. Carl Schomburg, the

jeweler, to help the citizens of Columbus to accurately set their pocket watches.

This fire bell and tower system was short lived, however, and the tower was

taken down in 1905. The large bell from the tower continues to ring today in

the steeple of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Columbus. An inscription

on the old bell dates its casting to 1872 by Holbrook & Son of Massachusetts.

Despite the bell’s inscription indicating a Columbus Fire Department operating

in 1872, firefighters in Columbus did not become paid employees of the

city until 1896. This official City Department received its first motorized fire

truck in 1921. It operated out of Fire Station #4 on 6th Avenue. Since the first

official organizing of volunteer firefighters in 1843 as the Columbus Hook

& Ladder Company, hundreds of others like Robert Greene have dedicated

their lives and careers to protecting Columbus citizens and property from the

dangers of “man’s red flower.” Columbus may sleep soundly at night knowing

it is watched over by these dedicated public servants. SVM

Standing tall and proud in Columbus

is a beautiful Greek Revival historic

home from the 1830s featuring

a double staircase entryway with

four columns. This house was a

gathering place for some Columbus

locals throughout the years with

many members of the community

making happy memories there. The

house was remodeled in 1930 and

passed off through the years until

it eventually landed in the hands

of the Harris family. As experienced

historic homeowners, they

knew exactly what they wanted

to do with their new house and

began renovating in 2017. With the help of contractor Johnny Cargill and

architect Jack Jenkins this historic home in Columbus was brought back

to life.

This home features five bedrooms and five bathrooms spanning across

two floors and sits on a lot that is almost four acres. The white exterior

paneling invites a Raised Cottage look while preserving the Greek Revival

design with exterior dentil molding. The landscaping for the property was

expertly done by Dewayne Gallatin and enhances the house’s grand and

inviting entryway. The beautiful and spacious yard is a popular spot each

year for the St. Paul Easter Egg hunt. Located conveniently in Midtown,

this home offers a beautiful look into the past while keeping a vibrant

future.

At the end of the lane on Carter

Avenue in Midtown Columbus sits

a beautiful 20th-century home with

a classic elegance that doesn’t lose

a modern touch. In the early 1920s,

Rebecca Flournoy Hamburger built

a house next to Tranquilla, and according

to family tradition, this was

her summer cottage. But the city

directory shows various occupants

from 1923 to 1947 when Mrs. Hamburger

became a permanent resident.

In the 1960s, after the Woolfolk

family sold their antebellum Wynnton

Road house to AFLAC, they bought the Hamburger home. Edward

Neal designed the remodeling of the house at that time, which included

enlarging the structure and giving it a new front façade.

This home features four bedrooms, three full bathrooms, and one partial

bathroom and is just over 3,000 square feet of space. At the front of the

house a beautiful entryway with a welcoming foyer introduces the parlor

and dining room fitted with floor length windows and extensive elegant

crown molding. The home boasts gorgeous hardwood floors, immaculate

detailing, and soaring ceilings that create a bright and warm feel. The

charming kitchen has stainless steel gas range and ample cabinet space

with a wonderful walk-in pantry. The living room area also hosts plenty of

storage space with beautiful walls of cabinetry.

Georgian

REVIVAL

Jenny and Philip Adams, with the help of Interior Designer Beth

Beaudoin of B-Line Studio, Bubba Holland of H&C Construction, and Jack

Jenkins of Jenkins Architecture, were able to transform a faded Georgian

home in Midtown Columbus, into a joyous and vibrant family home.

There is something timeless about

Georgian homes with its symmetrical

design, classic proportions and decorative

details and Philip and Jenny

Adam’s home is the perfect example.

The home was originally built in

1969 by Dr and Mrs. Joe Chastain.

Together they put a tremendous

amount of thought into the finishes

and details of the house. Also,

wthis house was well-known for its

intricate gardens. Mrs. Chastain had

wonderful plants and, as with the

interior, had thoughtfully designed

the landscape. In the summer of 2017 Philip and Jenny Adams bought

the home, and spent six months renovating the home moving in one week

before Christmas. With the professional help of Bubba Holland of H&C

Construction, Jack Jenkins of Jenkins Architecture, Wildwood Gardens,

Southern Roots Landscaping and Interior Designer Beth Beaudoin of

B-Line Studio, this lovely home was given an updated remodel without

losing any of the original charm.

The interior’s formal, classical “bones” of the house have been modernized

to reflect the Adam's lifestyle. Many of the original elements were

reincorporated or repurposed. For example, they reused the original sinks,

faucets and light fixtures, and even found the company that constructed the

original millwork. When walls were modified in a few rooms, they were

able to have that company, based in Florence South Carolina, match the

intricate moldings that are part of what makes this house so unique. “We

view it as a privilege to live in this landmark home that the Chastain family

built. We have enjoyed spending time with family and friends, hosting

pre-homecoming and prom parties for our high-schoolers, and even hosted

our eldest son’s fraternity when they made a pilgrimage to nearby Linwood

Cemetery to find the grave of their fraternity founder, who is buried

there. We have learned about native plants of our region and have enjoyed

taking care of the beautiful grounds that surround the house.” - Jenny

Adams.

men and women begin to experience signs of aging, such as poor memory and

concentration, low energy, and more. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

can help ease these symptoms and improve overall quality of life. Specifically,

hormone replacement can increase energy levels, improve libido, help stabilize

mood and increase concentration. Additionally, HRT can help with increasing

muscle mass, strength and endurance, and improve recovery time after strenuous

activity.

1513 Wellness & Weight Loss offers a variety of weight-loss plans and they

like to tailor the plan to fit each individual’s needs. They have programs that

are designed to offer rapid weight loss in a healthy manner. Their rapid weight

loss programs are followed by a lifestyle plan to help maintain the achieved

that are geared towards steady weight loss by setting goals and making lifestyle

changes. 1513 Wellness & Weight Loss offers hands-on support, education and

SMART

TRAVEL

LAST IMPRESSIONS

BEST TRAVEL APPS

From planning your next getaway, now that coronavirus is gone,

to managing your vacation budget, there are a myriad apps you can

use to make your trip a seamless, more enjoyable experience.

By EMMALEIGH PERMENTER

‘Hopper’ is the best app for analyzing airfare and hotel prices so

you can book your trip at the perfect time.

Tell Hopper where and when you want to go, and a color-coded

calendar will show you the most expensive or affordable dates

to fly. The app will also tell you if you should book your trip

now or hold off until the rate gets better.

‘PackPoint’ is an app that goes beyond a simple packing list, it

generates a custom packing plan based on your destination and

the type of travel you will use to get there. Just input your trip

location and dates, and PackPoint will tell you what you need to

bring. It even checks for weather updates to let you know if you

really need that extra jacket or umbrella.

‘Waze’ is a navigating app that goes beyond just telling you

how to get where you're going, but the best way to get there.

Waze specializes in helping you avoid traffic caused by congestion,

blocked roads, accidents, or any other hazards that might

prolong your travel time. .

Skyscanner's "everywhere" feature allows you to look for

surprising destinations simply by sorting by your budget and

your travel timeframe. You may think Europe, for example,

will be out of your price-range, but this feature could make the

trip possible. Like Hopper, it also helps you find the best airfare

rates by alerting you when prices dip.

‘Timeshifter’ is the app you need if you plan on taking your

spring break vacation abroad. Developed by scientists using

sleep and circadian neuroscience, Timeshifter will create a

personalized jet lag plan for you based on your trip and area of

travel. The website boasts that even astronauts and elite athletes

use their app to arrive in peak condition to their destinations.

When you have to go, you have to go, but finding a public toilet

when you're traveling can be quite the task. The Flush Toilet

Finder saves you time and helps you avoid an accident with the

over 190,000 public bathrooms in its database. Flush will tell

you which ones are free, accessible for the disabled, or require

a key—and users can even rate and report a toilet. SVM
