LEADER PROGRAMME

INTRODUCING SKARBEK

LEADERSHIP EDUCATION FOR

THE 2020s

The Challenge

Leading without line authority is a challenge.

Add to this the complexities of matrix organisations

dispersed across continents and time

zones, and the challenge is only multiplied. It

is a challenge that tens of thousands of project

managers face every day of their lives, certain

in the knowledge that there must surely

be a better way of doing things and yet overwhelmed

– so often left to their own devices

with little training or education to help.

Skarbek understands this. Its client organisations

want to raise their capabilities. To do

this, they need to raise the capabilities of their

teams and sub teams – and in response, Skarbek

has developed a new, finely-tuned, experiential

learning programme that is explicitly

designed to equip people with first class

project management skills. Addressing very

real issues in the workplace, the programme

uniquely enables project managers to lead

without direct authority, but with confidence

in complex, fast evolving matrix organisations.

Developing your people’s skills, ability and

confidence is a lifelong investment in your

people. They benefit, you benefit. The Skarbek

Project Team Leader Programme is designed

to deliver measurable impact within 6

months.

3

Background

Successful project management is dependent

on both ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ skills. Everyone knows

that, but how often is it actually applied?

Among Skarbek clients there is a growing

realisation that training a few people in project

management methodology isn’t enough.

As well as the methodology, there needs to

be serious and considered investment in the

humanology – the understanding of how we

feel and respond in the way we do, our motivations

and behaviours, how we foster relationships

of trust and bring out the very best

in people. These are the keys to the doorway

of performance excellence.

In today’s complex world, essential project

management skills include the all-important

ability to lead without authority, manage

competing priorities, and make quick decisions

in order to continue working effectively

in a state of constant change – all this in geographically

dispersed teams. The Skarbek Project

Team Leader Programme equips project

managers with the very best methodology,

but also the smartest thinking in humanology

– a complete set of skills to be most effective.

Aim

To develop superb leadership capabilities for

Skarbek clients to outperform their competitors

and execute the very best strategies in an

increasingly complex world.

Objectives

To develop first class leadership, followership

and team working capabilities, in order to:

• Deliver strategic projects in a global matrix

organisation

• Deliver programmes and projects that span

internal functions, countries, regions and the

outsourced suppliers of goods and services

• Lead transformation and change initiatives

• Develop project management skills for small

teams operating without line authority or required

to work with high degrees of aligned

autonomy

• Deliver innovations in cross-functional teams

Skarbek recognises that one size does not fit

all. Organisations and people, thankfully, are

very different. It celebrates this difference and

offers bespoke learning to develop individu-

al’s self-awareness, knowledge and leadership

skills. Skarbek recognises that teams are often

formed specifically for a defined purpose, and

then disbanded; that many projects are delivered

in partnership with actors both inside

and outside an organisation; and that project

managers frequently have little or no line authority.

It is these challenges that Skarbek has

the experience and knowledge to overcome,

and the expertise to support others to do as

well, in order to drive teams and organisations

to consistently deliver the best results.

Scope

The Project Team Leader Programme (PTLP)

focuses on the key principles of leadership, fellowship

and high performing teams, and contains

a strong experiential learning element.

Recognising that leadership is a topic of considerable

scale, PTLP is modular and designed

to take place in three 2-day sessions delivered

over 3-4 months, with ample time between

sessions to put the newly learned skills into

practice and continue learning on projects

and programme related team assignments.

The curriculum is informed by research carried

out in numerous project teams within

global businesses, geographically dispersed

and with varying degrees of autonomy; the

military, working in remote locations, often

with tactical levels of resource and yet potentially

strategic impact; and the world of

mountaineering and exploration. Participants

are equipped with new understanding and

techniques in areas such as team and individual

flow state, emotional engagement, and

building delivery confidence.

5

PTLP Delivery Approach

The PTLP combines the very best in-house Skarbek learning models with those of long established

and trusted partners, in order to deliver a uniquely complete learning package:

• Skarbek Associates

Skarbek support some of the world’s leading companies to implement their strategies, to grow and compete

successfully. Much of the time we are delivering alongside the client providing special resources to

make a difference. Often we are called upon to build organisational capability to deliver strategic projects

and change. To meet such needs, we have drawn upon our multi-sector experience and expertise in both

leading and developing high performance project teams to design and deliver a range of high impact

programmes.

• Centre for Army Leadership (CAL)

Based at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, CAL has a combined military and academic team of leadership

theorists and practitioners. Their mission is to maintain leadership excellence across the British Army

and keep it at the forefront of leadership thinking.

• Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS)

RMAS is where all officers in the British Army are trained to take on the responsibility of leading their soldiers.

During training, all officer cadets learn to live by the academy’s motto: ‘Serve to Lead’. Other Nations

choose to send their personnel to RMAS for Officer training because it is recognised as a world-leading

military training academy.

• Inspirational Development Group (IDG)

IDG help organisations achieve its strategic goals by developing the behaviour of your people. They design

award-winning, bespoke development programmes that promote and provide leadership skills and deliver

measurable benefits to your business, with particular focus on the enhanced leadership impact through

behavioural change.

PTLP is delivered using a mix of methods:

• Plenary core learning sessions and discussions

• Self-reflection

• Practical implementation assignments & papers

•Book Club - group discussions for concentrated

learning from the best available leadership

literature.

•Inspirational Leadership Talks - memorable insights

from recognised leaders

• Experiential learning - individual & team missions

to put learning into practice

Participants complete the programme armed

with a comprehensive blend of leadership skills

to successfully lead a team to delivery, and importantly

the confidence to translate learning

into action.

Target Audience

PTLP is primarily designed for people who

are either leading or have a key role in project

delivery:

Mid–Senior Managers / Directors responsible

for delivering in complex cross functional,

cross cultural, transformation & change environments:

• Project / Delivery Leads

• Functional Leads

• Project Team Members with sub-team leadership

roles

The programme is equally valuable for senior

/ functional leadership team members.

PTLP Road Map

The Programme has three key themes: Leadership,

Followership and High Performance

Teams. It is delivered in three 2-day sessions

over a period of 3-4 months. Between the

events, the participants complete individual

and team assignments applying the learnings

and developing their leadership thinking

further through the Book Club activities.

Topic Illustration – Resilience

For key initiative leaders operating without direct authority across the silos in an organisation, it

can feel much like our namesake Krystyna Skarbek’s experience behind enemy lines, working with

resistance groups and far away from HQ in London. Project managers need considerable reserves

of resilience to tackle their daily challenges and in the PTLP we fully unpack the elements of resilience

and equip participants with the knowledge and skills to build their protective capabilities.

We explore the topic through inspirational story telling drawn from the worlds of mountaineering

and exploration before examining the physiology and nature of work-related stress. Participants

have the opportunity to develop their own models of stress management and set of techniques

to manage their ability to deal with project strains, as well as how to how to foster resilient project

teams.

Finally, fully equipped to try their new approaches in real work, we provide wearable devices that

trace the draw down and replenishment of coping reserves over the course of the working week,

allowing participants to monitor stress levels and finalise the most effective resilience plan for

each individual.
