5 Top Gardening Tips and Tricks for Beginners
As days are getting stressful with extreme weather changes and environmental hazards paying visits now
and then, the need for creating more green spaces is becoming a necessity. But you might ask how can you
also be apart of this. It is a well-known fact that it just looks difficult, it is very easy to start gardening or even
farming! All you need is to dedicate a little time initially and you can how these little green ones bring over
smiles to everyone who sees it.
So here we have 10 simple tips and tricks that will help you in becoming a good gardener in no time.
1. Start small
Its the all-time mantra to ‘start small and make your way up’. Start your little hobby in a small container. You
can place this at a corner of your backyard, lawn, your apartment’s balcony or even near a window.
And here’s a tip, try reusing some plastic containers or tins that you had kept away to leave in the garbage.
This will not only save you some money from buying pots but will also be a step towards reducing plastic and
metal waste.
2. Time and Location
Check online for some plants or veggies that you can plant according to the current season or even try for
plants that are available all seasons. This is crucial to make sure that your effort does not go in vain.
Similarly, keeping the plants are the right place is also important. If you are beginning with indoor plants,
most of them would not require a lot of sunlight, hence keeping it at a corner where there’s still light but is
the moderate amount will be an ideal condition for the plant to grow healthy. Make sure you do your
research on the plant selected before starting to work on it for the happy results to come by.
3. Soil and Fertilizers
Always make sure to keep the soil moist (not wet). As we have all learnt to stay hydrated it applies to the
plants as well. Make sure to make a small hole at the bottom of the container for the excessive water to
drain off. In areas with soil that hardens too much, you can mix the soil with some store-bought potting soil
that you can easily buy online or your nearby garden supply stores.
For fertilizers, it is best to always use DIY compost that you can easily make out of the food waste at home.
You can use cleaned eggshells for a good source of calcium while you can use the drained water from
aquariums or fish bowls to water the plants for an extra boost of nitrogen!
4. Trim and Prune
Make sure to give the shrubs and regular trim once the flowers or leaves have bloomed and faded away. This
will ensure new leaves and branches will grow from the nodes and keeping the plant healthy.
Tip: Make sure to cut the branch diagonally just above the node (I.e; an interjunction where different
branches or leaves have grown out).
5. Replanting from small containers
If you’ve started your gardening adventure in small containers and its time to replace them into larger ones,
make sure to take some time to carefully detach the plant from the soil without creating much shock to its
roots. This is important as the change of environment (I.e; the pH difference in the former and latter soils)
will provide a shock to the plant and any damage to the roots can weaken the sampling.
Incorporate these little steps into your new hobby and wait to welcome a few new green guests to your
home soon!
