Although Christiansregularly reflect, studyand sing about Jesus’death and resurrection,Easter is the specifictime of the year that focusses onthese things. But, why did Jesusdie?This question can beapproached in many ways. Theobvious and straightforwardanswer is that Jesus was nailed toa cross, a Roman punishment thatkilled many people in an intenselypublic and cruel way. But let’s diga little deeper.Jesus was a controversial figureof his time, loved by some, andhated by others. He died becausehe had a great amount of conflictwith the Jewish authorities: Jesuswas saying and doing a lot ofthings that upset the religiousleaders at the time. Jesus alsoarrived in Jerusalem at the timeof the Jewish Passover Festival,which had been a significant timeof uprising in the past, so it was anervous time, for both the Romanand religious authorities. Jesusdied because he was betrayedand handed over by one of hisdisciples Judas, because no oneintervened in his arrest, andthe Roman Governor Pilatewas outmaneuvered andfrightened of the situation.The people of Jerusalemgot caught up in a frenzyand death was the outcomefor Jesus. From a politicaland historical point of view,Jesus died for all thesereasons.Other reasons behind Jesusdying are explored in greatdepth in the Bible, you couldcall these ‘religious’ reasons. Asignificant part of each of the fourGospels (Matthew, Mark, Lukeand John) contains the story ofthe build-up and actual deathof Jesus. The way the Gospelwriters tell their stories shows thatJesus died so that people wouldrecognise him as the Son of Godand to reveal his glory, to saveothers rather than himself and torestore humanity to relationshipwith God. The writers of theletters in the New Testament alsocontribute to our understanding ofwhy Jesus died, such as St Paul,who writes about many things,including atonement.But, ultimately, Jesus diedbecause of love. This is thesimple one-word answer. Jesusdied because of God’s love forthe world which he cannot stoppouring out on his creation.
