Multiple wins for Kia in the ‘Driver
Power 2019’ survey
Following the results for
the Auto Express Driver
Power 2019 survey, Kia
Motors (UK) Limited has
received a range of accolades.
Kia is now ranked fifth within
‘Best Car Dealers’, seeing
an improvement from the
previous year’s seventh place.
Alongside this, seven Kia
models have been recognised
within ‘Best Cars 2019’ and
‘Top 50 Deals’. Kia itself was
ranked as the 3rd best brand.
As a part of the ‘Driver
Power 2019’ survey, Auto
Express asked consumers
to rate 31 franchised dealer
networks on a range of
criteria such as dealer facilities
and standard of work. Of
the 31 dealer networks,
Kia was placed fifth with an
87.10 per cent rating. Kia
scored particularly high in
both ‘Value for Money’ and
‘Communication’, which was
commended by Auto Express:
‘No other brand’s dealers
offer better value for money
than these, and that’s backed
up by a strong score for staff
communication.’
Within ‘Best Cars 2019’,
based on ownership
experience, Kia received a
triple win for the Picanto,
Sorento and Rio, all placing
first within their respective
categories. The Kia Picanto
was awarded ‘Best City Car’
due to its impressive high
quality interior and good
reliability. On top of this, the
Picanto was commended
for its low servicing cost and
overall build quality. For ‘Best
Large SUV’, the Kia Sorento
has come top beating all other
competitors and was highly
rated for practicality. The
combination of interior style
and an array of technological
features in the Sorento
impressed owners. Finally,
the title ‘Best Supermini’
was awarded to the Kia Rio,
whose running costs and fuel
efficiency were particularly
impressive. Owners reported
that for the Rio, ‘strong
reliability went hand-in-hand
with high levels of build
quality.’
Models ranked highly
within ‘Top 50 Deals’ included
the Kia Picanto, Stonic,
Ceed, Rio, Niro, Sportage
and Sorento. The Kia Sorento
placed fourth overall and
the Kia Niro Hybrid was also
placed within the top ten,
both models having attractive
dealer finance deals and a
high level of specification,
making them a popular choice.

Which Wheelchair Accessible
Vehicle (WAV) is right for you?
There are over 600
Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles
(or WAVs for short) available to
lease through the Motability
Scheme, so there’s a lot of
choice for those people looking
for a vehicle that they can use
with their wheelchair. But with
so much variety, how do you
choose which WAV is right
for you? In this article, we
are going to try and help you
answer that question by having
a closer look at the different
types of vehicles on offer.
When you are choosing
a new WAV, it is essential
to consider several factors:
who will be travelling in the
WAV, the size and weight of
the wheelchair that will be
used with it and additional
equipment or needs
passengers and drivers may
have. These are all factors
that will point you in the right
direction for your new WAV.
From here, there are other
matters to think about, such
as the size, how you will get
in and out of the vehicle, the
type of fuel you would like and
the type of transmission that
suits you best. How the vehicle
drives and is operated will be
defined by these characteristics
and the decisions you make.
WAV sizes
WAVs come in a variety of
sizes, starting in the small
class, with cars like the Citroen
Berlingo or Volkswagen Caddy.
These vehicles are better for
lighter loads and often have
tighter points of entry. This
makes them the preferred
choice for users with light
wheelchairs who don’t need
to carry too many items with
them. It is worth remembering
that small WAVs aren’t available
with powered lifts and only use
ramps.
From here, the size
increases to the medium
category, which is broken up
into two parts: medium-small
and medium-large. Examples
of cars in this category are the
Ford Grand Tourneo Connect
and Volkswagen Caddy Maxi
Life—longer wheelbase
variants of the Ford Tourneo
Connect and Volkswagen
Caddy. They are medium-small
and both feature a greater
level of interior space, making
it ideal for WAV users who
need to carry more items or
passengers. A medium-large
WAV is the smallest size you
need in order to opt for a
powered lift instead of a ramp.
Large WAVs, like the
Renault Master and Peugeot
Boxer, all come with lift access
mechanisms. These are the
best choice for users with
heavier chairs who require
more space and larger points
of entry. Speaking of entry
points, in the large WAVs,
passengers with wheelchairs
always access the car from the
rear, whereas in the medium
and small vehicles, access
points from the side may be
available in some models.
Fuel types
Much of the time, your fuel
type is down to personal
preference. Diesel engines are
often more economical and
mobilitynews
8
are better for moving heavier
weights, so you will find these
engines are the only options
in larger WAVs. But smaller
vehicles may come with petrol
engines, which are often
preferable for people covering a
lower number of miles.
There is also one electricpowered
WAV available with
the Motability Scheme, the
Nissan NV200. Electric power
is hushed and always feels
quicker than you think it will,
thanks to the instant pulling
power delivered. It is better
for users who travel short
distances in cities. Sometimes,
these vehicles can take a little
time to get used to and often
come with a higher Advance
Payment than other fuel types
due to their higher cost as a
base vehicle.
Transmissions
Like fuel choices, gearboxes
can be a matter of personal
preference, but many motorists
find modern automatic units
to be the most comfortable
and relaxing way of driving.
Automatics are often more
expensive than a manual
gearbox and sometimes they
can hesitate slightly while they
calculate how to deploy the
engine power. This is a reason
why some drivers still prefer
a manual, where they can feel
and adjust to a vehicle a little
more.
Test drive
When you are looking for
your next new car, whether
it is a WAV or otherwise, it is
always vital to take a test drive.
Indeed, Motability Operations’
WAV and Adaptations Account
Manager, Graham Lloyd, says
that a planned test drive route
is best.
He explained: “Try and
emulate a journey you already
know well—to the shops,
the GP surgery or school run,
taking in a variety of road
surfaces and speed limits so
that you can get a real idea of
how it will feel to live day to
day with a WAV.”
“If possible, include
roundabouts and any hills
you may usually pass over so
that the wheelchair user can
understand whether small
changes, such as a rise in their
centre of gravity, will still be
comfortable.”
Graham added: “Travelling
in a wheelchair in a car is very
different to a standard car seat,
so it is a good chance to get
as much appreciation of that
as possible before making the
decision to change.”

10 things to help you decide if the
Motability Scheme is right for you
When you join the Motability Scheme you get more than just a car, Wheelchair
Accessible Vehicle (WAV), scooter or powered wheelchair of your choice, you also get
to enjoy all the freedom that comes with a truly worry-free lease.
We know that getting a new car is a big decision, which is why we’ve highlighted
a few things that people often want to talk to us about before deciding if the Scheme is
for them. Have a read through and you may well find answers to questions that have
been on your mind too!
1. How does the
Motability Scheme
work?
The purpose of the Scheme
is to provide the simplest,
most affordable way to run a
brand new car. There’s no credit
checks or lengthy forms to fill
out. You just exchange your
mobility allowance to lease the
car that suits your needs best.
Everyday running costs such
as insurance for up to three
named drivers, servicing and
maintenance and breakdown
recovery are all included in the
weekly price. So, you just need
to pay for fuel and off you go.
2. Can I get a car on
the Scheme if I don’t
drive?
Yes, you don’t have to be
able to drive to get a car on
the Scheme. Lots of our
customers don’t drive. That’s
why the insurance with your
lease is for up to three named
drivers. So your car could be
driven by a family member,
friend or carer, it doesn’t have
to be you. Also, you may
like to know, you can lease a
Motability Scheme car as a
learner driver, so long as you
have a provisional licence and
are listed as a permitted driver
on the Certificate of Motor
Insurance. You must also be
accompanied by a driver who
is over 21 and has held their
licence for at least three years.
They should also be named
on your Certificate of Motor
Insurance in case they need
to take control of the car
themselves.
3. What if I’m family, a
friend or a carer?
We want the Motability
Scheme to be as convenient
as possible for our customers
and the people who support
them. That’s one of the reasons
we include insurance for up
to three named drivers on the
lease. Also, if it’s easier for
the customer, they can
nominate you to speak to us
about the lease agreement
mobilitynews
12
on their behalf.
If you are not the disabled
person, but are acting on their
behalf as an appointee or
nominee, then you may find
this information useful.
4. How do I know if I
am eligible for the
Scheme?
Simple, you’re eligible if
you currently receive any of
these allowances and have
12 months remaining on your
award:
• Higher Rate Mobility
Component of the Disability
Living Allowance (DLA)
• Enhanced Rate of the
Mobility Component of
Personal Independence
Payment (PIP)
• War Pensioners’ Mobility
Supplement (WPMS)
• Armed Forces
Independence Payment
(AFIP)
5. What about PIP
reassessments?
If you’re currently in
receipt of the Disability Living
Allowance (DLA) and are
invited for a reassessment,
as long as you’re successful
in your application for the
Enhanced Rate of the Mobility
Component of Personal
Independence Payment (PIP),
you will still be eligible to join
the Motability Scheme. If you
became a customer, then lost
your allowance, we would offer
you the chance to buy the car,
or you could return it with no
further payments to make. If
that’s the case, you may also
be entitled to a £250 Return to
Dealer payment.
6. How much will a
new car cost me
a week?
Our choice of over 2,000
vehicles is split into the three
price band options below. You
can pick from the one that fits
your budget the best:
• Cars that cost less than your
weekly mobility allowance,
so you keep the difference.
• Cars that cost exactly the
same as your allowance.
• Cars that cost the same as
your allowance, plus a oneoff
Advance Payment.
Remember, whatever
car you choose, insurance,
servicing, repairs and
breakdown recovery, are all
included in the weekly price.
7. What if I need
adaptations?
If you require adaptations to
help make driving, or travelling,
easier or more comfortable,
you’ll be pleased to know that
many of the most popular ones
are available at no additional
cost when fitted at the start of
your lease.
mobilitynews
13
Adaptations generally fall
into three categories:
• Driving adaptations to
help improve your driving
experience
• Stowage adaptations
allowing you to stow your
scooter or wheelchair
• Access adaptations which
help you get in and out of
the car
8. Can I trade in my
old car against a
new one?
You can trade in your
privately owned car at most
Motability Scheme dealerships.
This could help finance an
Advance Payment or optional
extras for your new car.
And remember, a Motability
Scheme car is brand new
and your lease includes all
the maintenance you’ll need
to keep your vehicle running
smoothly. So that means none
of the unexpected repair bills,
often associated with running
an older car.
9. Will I definitely be
able to get the car I
need?
The Motability Scheme
stays right up-to-date with
the latest car models
from most of the leading
manufacturers. So yes, the
likelihood is that the car you
want will be available. All we
would say is, before setting
your heart on a particular
car, visit a dealership or two
and speak to their Motability
specialist for expert advice.
They may recommend other
cars to test drive, so you can
compare them to the one you
were thinking of.
Finding the right new
car starts with having the
best possible choice of
manufacturers and their latest
models – and that’s what
you’ll find on our Car Search
tool. And whether you’re
looking for a low emission
hatchback, or a bigger family
vehicle, our easy online ‘Car
Search’ makes getting to what
you want easy.
10. How do I apply?
It’s simple- search through
our range of vehicles to see
what’s available, then visit
a dealership to speak to a
Motability specialist and
arrange a test drive. When
you’ve decided on the car, the
dealer you choose will help
complete your order for you at
the dealership.
Want to know more?
Remember, we’re here to
help however we can, so if
there are other things that you
would like to talk to us about,
just call when you are ready.
Or you can request a call back
at a time that’s convenient for
you. You can reach one of the
team on 0800 694 9000.
Once you have an idea
of the car makes you’re
interested in, you can search
for dealerships near you online.
Choose from almost 5,000
dealerships across the UK,
each with Motability Scheme
specialists on hand to give you
expert help and advice, and
arrange a test drive.
If you would like to talk to
a trained Motability Scheme
specialist for expert advice,
you can search for your local
dealership now.

about the Scheme, request a

send you all the information
that you need.

Everything you need to know
about named drivers on the
Motability Scheme
Your Motability Scheme
lease includes insurance for up
to three named drivers, so if
you don’t want to or aren’t able
to drive yourself, your car can
be driven by a family member,
friend or carer. We often get
queries from customers during
their lease about who can
drive their car, so here are the
answers to some of the most
commonly asked questions.
Can I change a driver
during my lease?
If you wish to add or change
a driver during your lease, you
can call RSA Motability (RSAM)
on 0300 037 3737 and they’ll
make the changes for you.
Only the customer or their
nominee can request a change
of driver. RSAM will need to
speak to your proposed named
driver to confirm they will drive
your car in accordance with
Scheme guidelines, and to take
them through a fair processing
declaration form in order for us
to check their licence with the
DVLA, so they must be with
you when you call.
What happens if my
named driver can no
longer drive?
If your current named driver
is no longer able to drive, it’s
worth seeing if there is anyone
else that can drive your car
before considering cancelling
your lease agreement. If a
named driver is convicted of
a motoring offence during
the agreement, you must tell
RSAM immediately to make
sure you are still covered. You
should also let the DVLA know
about any change in your or
your driver’s mobility or health
which might make driving
unsafe. If your GP has passed
you to drive and the DVLA are
aware of these changes you do
not need to contact us.
Can I add a third
driver to my lease?
If you would like to
nominate a third driver during
your lease you should contact
RSAM to arrange this. As with
changing a driver, only the
customer or their nominee
can request to add a driver
and RSAM will need to speak
to the proposed named driver
when you call.
Can I add temporary
driver to my lease?
From time to time, you may
require a temporary driver,
for example, when you go on
holiday or relatives come to
visit. You can add a temporary
driver, however, please note
that if you already have three
drivers on your insurance policy
you would need to swap out
one of your existing drivers to
accommodate this.
A temporary driver can be
added onto your lease for up
to 30 days at a time and must
always abide by the Scheme
rules and use the car for your
benefit. If you rely on this driver
multiple times throughout the
year, they must be included
on your Certificate of Motor
Insurance as a permanent
driver. Please remember that
temporary driver additions
cannot be used as a substitute
for a permanent driver. You
can contact RSAM for more
information.

But despite the new criteria,
local authorities will still have
the final say on who does and
does not qualify.
There are about 2.35 million
holders of the blue badge in
the UK at present. The DfT
could not estimate how many
more people would qualify
after the extension of the rules.
The transport secretary,
Chris Grayling, said: “As a
society, we don’t do enough for
people with hidden disabilities.
I hope this change to blue
badge guidance will make
a real difference to people’s
lives.”
Justin Tomlinson, the
minister for disabled people,
said: “Extending the blue
badge scheme is a watershed
moment in ensuring those with
hidden disabilities are able to
travel with greater ease and
live more independent lives.”
The DfT is also launching a
review into blue badge fraud
after the Local Government
Association estimated that
theft of the parking permits
rose by 45% in 2018, a six-fold
increase since 2013.
More than 1,200 people
faced legal action for misusing
the blue badge in 2017-18;
however, only 40% of local
authorities in England did not
have a policy on prosecutions.
The LGA said: “Despite
limited resources, councils
are trying to crack down
on dishonest motorists by
prosecuting offenders and
seizing blue badges suspected
of being used illegally, so it is
good that the government has
listened to our concerns and
has committed to a review
which will support councils in
tackling fraudulent use.
“People can help councils
win the fight against blue
badge fraud, by tipping us off
about people they suspect are
illegally using a badge, bearing
in mind this new eligibility and
that people’s need for a badge
might not be obvious.”

World premiere of all-new i10 N Line
at 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show
Following the recent
unveiling of the All-New i10,
Hyundai Motor has announced
it is to further enhance its N
Line portfolio with the All-New
i10 N Line, which makes its
debut at the 2019 Frankfurt
Motor Show (IAA). The new
model combines the dynamic
design, comprehensive
connectivity and advanced
safety of the All-New i10 with
the sportiness and attitude of
N Line. The All-New i10 N Line
will be available in Europe in
summer 2020.
The All-New i10 N Line
becomes the fourth Hyundai
model to be equipped with its
dynamic trim level. It follows
on from the successful N
Line launch in 2018 with
the i30, followed by the i30
Fastback and, earlier this year,
the Tucson. Hyundai’s latest
model is complemented by an
exclusive 1.0 T-GDi engine for
increased driving performance.
“Taking inspiration from our
high-performance sub-brand
Hyundai N, the i10 N Line
features an even more dynamic
look,” says Andreas-Christoph
Hofmann, Vice President
Marketing and Product at
Hyundai Motor Europe. “In the
past year, N Line has become
an important component of
our model strategy and we
are excited to introduce the
N Line character to our i10
customers.”
A dynamic and sporty
exterior design
Like the All-New i10, the
All-New i10 N Line’s dynamic
and sleek design offers a
contrast between its soft
surfaces and sharp lines. Its
exterior design enhancements
include redesigned bumpers
and grille, giving it a dynamic
look reminiscent of the original
i30 N. The exclusive 16-
inch alloy wheels
and the LED
Daytime
running lights illustrate the
distinctive design of the All-
New i10 N Line and emphasise
the car’s sporty attitude.
The All-New i10 N Line’s
other exclusive design
features include the N Line
emblem, i10 sign in red font,
as well as a skid plate and
diffuser. Customers can also
choose from a total of 6
exterior colours which can be
combined with a two tone roof.
Interior details inspired by
motorsport
Inside, the car nods to the
design of race car interiors.
It achieves this thanks to the
N-branded steering wheel
and gear shift lever, as well as
red air vent rings and metal
pedals. Meanwhile, the sporty
seats offer more support for
performance-oriented driving
precision.
Like the standard i10, it
offers a youthful style and
practical solutions without
compromising comfort.
An exclusive 1.0 T-GDi
engine for fun driving
performance
The All-New i10 N Line
offers an exclusive 1.0-litre
T-GDi 3-cylinder with 100 PS
and 172 Nm torque. This is in
addition to the 1.2-litre MPi
4-cylinder with 84 PS and
118 Nm torque. Both engines
are available with a five-gear
manual transmission.

All-new Hyundai i10
making a big statement
in the A-segment
Hyundai Motor has unveiled the All-New i10 ahead of its
launch at the 2019 Frankfurt International Motor Show
(IAA). The newest model in the company’s i-range features
a new dynamic design, as well as a comprehensive
connectivity and advanced safety package.
mobilitynews
18
Since its introduction in
2008, the i10 has been a
success story for Hyundai
in Europe. Like the previous
generation of the model,
the All-New i10 is designed,
developed and made in
Europe. Its exterior body
reflects its young spirit while
ensuring uncompromised
accessibility and comfort to
support its diversified users
in their everyday activities. In
combination with one of the
most comprehensive safety
equipment offers in its class,
the All-New Hyundai i10 offers
the complete package.
“The i10 has consistently
been one of our sales drivers
and the historic base of growth
for Hyundai in Europe, and
we stay committed to our
customers looking for an
A-segment car by introducing
this all-new model,” says
Andreas-Christoph Hofmann,
Vice President Marketing and
Product at Hyundai Motor
Europe HQ. “The All-New
Hyundai i10 is the latest
example of our democratisation
of new technologies for our
customers. We are launching
it with the tagline “Go Big.”
to emphasise the feeling that
customers will get from this
uncompromised city car – it
might seem like a small car, but
it makes a big statement!”
A dynamic and stylish
exterior design
The All-New i10’s dynamic
and sleek design offers a
contrast between its soft
surfaces and sharp lines.
Compared to its predecessor,
the All-New i10 has enhanced
proportions. Its visual stance
is improved by its lowered roof
(20 mm) and its wider body (20
mm). These enhancements can
be complemented by newlydesigned
optional 16-inch
alloy wheels, resulting in an
energetic and agile look.
The All-New i10 has a
young and dynamic design
that stands out in the
A-segment. Its wide front grille
expresses a sporty character
and incorporates the round
LED Daytime Running Lights
showing a refined honeycomb
structure inside, thus
continuing this feature of the
i10’s heritage. At the rear, two
horizontal crease lines break
up the soft surfaces of the
boot and run into the taillight
graphics.
The All-New i10’s side view
is characterised by the clean,
smoothly muscled main body,
which has been shaped to
provide maximum inner space.
Unique triangular volumes
visually emphasise the width
of the car and highlight the
position of the wheels at the
four corners. The X-shaped
C-Pillar, visible from far away,
clearly identifies the car and
draws the eye to the pillarmounted
logo.
Customers can choose
from 10 exterior base colours,
including three new ones:
Dragon Red, Brass and Aqua
Turquoise. The other exterior
colour choices are Phantom
Black, Polar White, Star Dust,
Sleek Silver, Champion Blue,
Tomato Red and Slate Blue.
The option of a two-tone
roof – in either Black or Red –
further increases customers’
customisation options and
brings out the All-New i10’s
playful side. Overall, 22 exterior
colour combinations are
available.
“The design of the All-
New i10 combines opposing
elements of softness and
sharpness in both the interior
as well as the exterior,” says
Thomas Bürkle, Chief Designer
at Hyundai Design Center
mobilitynews
19
Europe. “Our designers found
inspiration in the technical
clothes of athletes, which
contrast the natural shapes of
the human muscles with sharp
and technical graphics.”
The interior also features a
fully new design
The interior offers a youthful
impression through the overall
theme of the design of the All-
New i10 without compromising
usability. One of the important
elements of the interior is the
extra width created by the airvents
protruding the doortrim
to support the horizontality of
the architecture.
The large décor panel on
the dashboard, shows the
‘honeycomb’ 3D pattern that
is carried as well into the door
panels. This brings visual value
to the whole interior.
With the youthful style
and practical solutions of the
interior without compromising
comfort the much appreciated
larger segment character of
the previous generation is
continued. The doortrim is
designed to visually extend the
dashboard while also guiding
the eye towards the large
storage compartments in the
door. Additional to the glovebox
storage, the designers of the
All-New i10 integrated an extra
open storage compartment
above the glovebox on the
passenger side.
Four different interior
colour combinations offer
customers even more scope
for personalisation.
Roominess and convenience
The All-New i10 is available
as a four- or five-seater model.
Thanks to the increased
wheelbase the roominess
for the passengers has been
enhanced.
The All-New i10’s reduced
beltline at the front (-11mm)
and rear of the vehicle (-13mm)
provides drivers with a better
view of the road on both
sides, as well as a sleeker
design. In combination with
less C-pillar obscuration, now
11.9º and down from 13.1º,
drivers have better visibility
when performing parking
manoeuvers.
With a volume of 252
litres, its versatile luggage
space is among the best in
the segment. Meanwhile, the
lift-in height is -29mm lower,
making it easier for drivers to
load luggage into the trunk. The
two-stage luggage board and
one-hand folding rear seats are
additional features adding on to
the model’s convenience.
The All-New i10 is available
with a rear-view camera,
which is designed to assist
drivers while parking. When
reverse is selected, drivers
can see where they are going
on the screen in the centre
dashboard.
Class-leading connectivity
The All-New i10 also
features a range of new
connectivity features, making
it a leader in its class. All of the
advanced technology functions
are integrated into the eightinch
colour touchscreen, which
is the largest in the A-segment.
Apple CarPlay and Android
Auto guarantee seamless
integration, safe operation and
mirrored functionality of mobile
devices that are based on
the iOS or Android operating
systems. Wireless charging
means drivers never have to
worry that their smartphone’s
battery will run out on a long
journey.
Hyundai is making its
Connected Car platform
available as an option for
All-New i10 customers.
With connectivity playing
an essential part in modern
mobilitynews
20
mobility, the company’s fullfeatured
Bluelink telematics
provides significant benefits
to drivers regarding safety
and security, control and
connectivity via an app. It
allows users to search for
points of interest (POI) and
send the search results directly
to the car’s satellite navigation,
which means it is set up even
before they get into the car.
Other features include ‘Find
My Car’, which allows drivers
to locate their vehicle easily in
an unfamiliar setting, as well as
parking space and fuel station
search, which offer live prices
and availability.
Customers who choose
navigation receive a
subscription to Hyundai LIVE
Services, which offer real-time
traffic and weather conditions
as well as the position of speed
cameras in countries where
this is permitted by law.
A comprehensive safety
package
The All-New i10 has one
of the most comprehensive
safety packages in its class
and is equipped with the latest
Hyundai SmartSense active
safety and driving assistance
features to comply with the
mobilitynews
21
highest European safety
standards.
Forward Collision-Avoidance
Assist (FCA) utilises a multifunction
camera to detect not
just cars, but also pedestrians
in front of the vehicle.
Meanwhile, High Beam
Assist (HBA) is designed to
automatically switch between
high and low beams and
provides an optimal illumination
of the road ahead to help
drivers detect lights from
oncoming vehicles at night.
Other safety features
available in the All-New
i10 include the Lane Keep
Assist System (LKAS), Driver
Attention Warning (DAW) and
the Intelligent Speed Limit
Warning (ISLW).
Fun driving performance and
eco-friendly powertrains
The All-New i10 will be
available at launch with
two engines: a 1.0-litre MPi
3-cylinder with 67 PS and 96
Nm torque, as well as a
1.2-litre MPi 4-cylinder with
84 PS and 118 Nm torque.
Both engines are available
with two transmission
choices, which consist of a
five-gear manual transmission
and a five-gear automated
manual transmission (AMT).
Compared to a traditional
automatic transmission, the
AMT increases efficiency
thanks to its lighter weight
and reduced friction.
The Idle Stop and Go
(ISG) is a standard feature
for all powertrains, which
contributes to lower fuel
consumption, lower CO2
emissions and higher
efficiency. The fuel savings of
using the ISG are especially
apparent when driving in
urban areas, as the ISG
automatically switches off the
engine when the car comes
to a halt. In order to further
enhance aerodynamics the
drag coefficient of the car was
lowered from 0.32 to 0.31.
The All-New i10 is also
available with an ECO Pack,
which includes an adjusted
gear ratio, four seats and
14-inch wheels for optimised
efficiency.

Hyundai Motor UK announces new
IONIQ pricing and specifications
Hyundai Motor UK has
officially announced the pricing
and specification changes for
the New IONIQ range, which
will be in showrooms from the
5th September.
Since its launch in October
2016, the IONIQ range has
been at the forefront of
demonstrating Hyundai’s
commitment to lowering
vehicle emissions. Alongside
the Kona Electric, New Kona
Hybrid, Nexo and a range of
48V hybrid combustion engine
systems, the New IONIQ
range further expands the
brands range of affordable
and advanced eco-friendly
vehicles that also deliver smart
connectivity and stylish design.
New IONIQ models receive
refreshed exterior designs
including redesigned grilles.
The Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid
models now sport a mesh
radiator grille with three
dimensional cells, whilst the
Electric models now feature
a redesigned grille with active
air flaps to assist in powertrain
cooling. All models have
new front and rear bumpers,
headlamps and tail lamps,
whilst interior changes to New
IONIQ include a comprehensive
redesign of the dashboard
with upgraded materials and
finishes, updated instrument
cluster, cabin mood lighting and
all new touch type temperature
and multimedia controls.
A new 10.25” widescreen
navigation system is available
on all Premium, Premium SE
models across the range and on
the limited edition 1st Edition
Hybrid model.
As well as refreshed design,
technical enhancements are
also seen throughout the range.
New IONIQ Electric receives a
larger battery which increases
in size from 28kWh to 38.3kWh
and a more powerful motor
rising from 88kW to 100kW for
improved efficiency. In addition,
New IONIQ Electric also
receives driver controlled fully
adjustable regenerative braking
with 1 pedal driving functionality
and smart regenerative braking.
This automatically regulates
the regenerative braking power
depending on road inclination
and forward momentum to
ensure the smoothest driving
experience whilst maximising
efficiency and range. The New
IONIQ Electric’s larger battery
will recharge from flat to 100%
charge in 6 hours 5 minutes
on a 7kW charger, whilst 80%
charge can be achieved on a
50kW within 57 minutes and
will provide a range of up to
184 miles.
Whilst the electrified 1.6
GDi, 6 speed DCT powertrains
for New IONIQ Hybrid and
New IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid are
carried over from the previous
models, both vehicles now
benefit from driver controlled
regenerative braking, adding
additional control and furthering
zero emission driving capability.

The New IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid’s
8.9kWh battery will recharge
from flat to 100% within 2
hours 15 from a 7kW charge
point and provides an electric
only driving range of up to
30 miles.
Connectivity features
heavily on New IONIQ, with
all Premium and Premium SE
specification models receiving
a 10.25” widescreen navigation
system which features
Bluelink® telematics. Bluelink®
is Hyundai’s smartphone appbased
connected car service
that enables drivers to carry
out a number of different
functions whilst away from
their vehicles. Depending on
powertrain type, this system
includes remote start, the ability
to activate and adjust climate
control when connected to a
vehicle charger, to unlock the
car doors remotely by entering
the Bluelink® User PIN and to
locate the vehicle. In addition
to the driver convenience
features, Bluelink® also serves
as a convenient diagnostic tool
which will notify the driver of
any vehicle maintenance issues
that require attention.
New IONIQ Hybrid and
Plug-in Hybrid models fitted
with the widescreen 10.25”
touch screen navigation system
also receive the Eco Driving
Assistant System (ECO-DAS).
ECO-DAS analyses road and
route information from the
navigation system to notify
the driver in advance that
deceleration is expected,
reducing fuel consumption,
minimising brake usage and
providing a more efficient
driving experience. ECO-DAS
also includes predictive energy
management, using gradient
data from the navigation
system to assist the control
and operation of the battery,
motor and Atkinson Cycle
combustion engine. When
ECO-DAS predicts an upcoming
incline, the combustion engine
is used to pre-charge the
battery, which in turn provides
the combustion engine with
an increased assistance when
the vehicle starts to climb,
increasing powertrain efficiency.
In contrast, when ECO-DAS
detects an upcoming descent,
the battery will automatically
increase its assistance, or take
over from the combustion
engine until the descent is
reached, at which point ECO-
DAS will automatically use
regenerative braking to reclaim
any stored charge used,
minimising fuel consumption
and maximising the potential
of the electrified powertrain
system.

New Hyundai IONIQ maintains
five-star Euro NCAP crash
test rating
The New Hyundai IONIQ
has officially maintained its
maximum rating of five stars
from the independent Euro
NCAP for crash safety. The
IONIQ Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid
and Electric versions of the
New IONIQ all keep this
maximum score.
When it comes to the
protection of adults and young
occupants, pedestrians,
or to its supporting safety
systems, the New IONIQ sets
standards in all Euro NCAP
evaluation criteria – and not
only within its own class but
in comparison with more
expensive vehicles in larger
segments.
“This five-star award from
Euro NCAP shows that our
strategy of offering safety
features in smaller classes
and also in combination with
alternative drives is the correct
one. The New Hyundai IONIQ
is a very modern vehicle
concept that has everything
the customer needs,” says
Andreas-Christoph Hofmann,
Vice President Marketing
and Product Hyundai Motor
Europe HQ.
Standard and optional stateof-the-art
safety systems of
the New Hyundai IONIQ
The New IONIQ’s
passive safety is aided by its
lightweight yet stiff chassis
and body. High-strength steel
alloys ensure optimal highimpact
energy absorption
- these innovative steel alloys
accounting for 53 percent of
IONIQ’s overall structure. In
the event of an accident, a
total of seven airbags protect
the occupants inside, including
an additional knee airbag for
the driver.
But to help prevent
accidents from happening
in the first place, the New
IONIQ is equipped with
SmartSense safety systems,
including technologies that
actively anticipate potential
risk situations. The Forward
Collision-Avoidance Assist that
warns the driver in emergency
situations and brakes
automatically comes standard.
The system is activated when
another vehicle, a pedestrian
or – new to the redesigned
New IONIQ – cyclist appears
in front of the vehicle.
Standard equipment also
includes Lane Keeping Assist,
which keeps the IONIQ from
unintentionally crossing the
lane markings. Other safety
systems such as Blind-spot
Collision Warning and Rear
Cross-traffic Collision Warning
are available as options.
The New IONIQ Hybrid
and Plug-in are on sale now.
IONIQ Electric will follow in
September 2019.

SEAT sales continue to grow
with an increase of more than
7% year-to-date
SEAT sales continued to
rise in August. The effect
of the WLTP procedure,
which led to a sharp rise in
registrations in Europe in
August 2018 and an overall
decrease in the market in the
same month this year, did not
hamper a new monthly record
for SEAT.
In August, company
deliveries amounted to
42,100 cars, which is 2%
more than in the same month
the previous year (41,200)
and 41.6% higher than the
figure recorded in August
2017 (29,700).
SEAT’s 2019 year-to-date
figure amounts to 411,600
vehicles delivered - 7.2%
higher than last year (January-
August 2018: 384,000). With
this result, the carmaker
broke the record posted in
the same period in 2018.
CUPRA* sales also
continued their upward trend
and rose by 70.6% from
January to August to a total of
17,100 vehicles. With just four
months left until the end of
the year, the new brand has
already greatly exceeded its
sales figure recorded for all of
2018 (14,400 units).
SEAT Vice-president for
Sales and Marketing and
CUPRA CEO Wayne Griffiths
underscored that, “the
August result continues
the performance we have
been setting in Europe in
2019: despite a difficult
environment, we are
increasing sales and gaining
market share throughout the
year. We trust our results will
continue to improve and we
will sustain this growth in the
remainder of the year.”
SEAT’s global sales rose
from January to August,
mainly driven by the results
in Germany, France and Italy.
Germany (94,800 vehicles;
+14.1%), Spain (80,000;
+1.2%) and the UK (46,800;
+3.5%) are still the leading
markets in terms of volume.
In Germany and the UK, SEAT
obtained the best historic
sales results up to August,
and in Spain it was the topselling
brand, widening
the gap compared to its
competitors. France and Italy
complete the list of top 5
markets, with an increase of
14.9% (24,800 vehicles) and
20.7% (18,400), respectively.
SEAT’s sustained doubledigit
growth in Switzerland
(8,800 cars; +10.9%), the
Netherlands (8,300 cars;
+31.2%), Sweden (6,300;
+21.8%) and Denmark (5.200;
+45.2%), and achieved
above market average
results in Austria (15,900;
+2.7%), Portugal (7,900;
+6.8%) and Ireland (3,900;
+9.7%). SEAT sales went up
in Mexico (16,500; +6.5%)
amidst a general decrease
in registrations, reaching the
highest volume ever from
January to August.

Hybrid news in brief – Suzuki Ignis
In line with plans to further
reduce CO2 emissions
across its range of vehicles,
Suzuki GB PLC is pleased to
announce the introduction
of two further Hybrid
grades for the Ignis range.
Suzuki’s system is now
available across all manual
transmission 1.2-litre Dualjet
models which are SZ3, SZ-T,
SZ5 two-wheel drive and SZ5
ALLGRIP 4X4.
Suzuki is the pioneer of the
compact low cost 12V Hybrid
system which is ideally suited
to a small car; its components
add just 6.2kg to the overall
kerb weight of 865kg for the
SZ3 whilst reducing CO2
emissions by an average of
eight per cent.
The SHVS system (Smart
Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) is
a compact and lightweight
unit that incorporates an
Integrated Starter Generator
(known as ISG) which acts
as both a generator and
starter motor, the ISG is
belt driven and assists the
engine during vehicle take
off and acceleration and also
generates electricity through
regenerative braking.
The system also uses a
compact high performance
lithium-ion battery placed
under the front passenger
seat to store energy and
incorporates an idle stop
function operated via the
Integrated Start Generator.
This in turn helps all Ignis
manual two wheel drive
models attain CO2 emissions
of 98g/km (NEDC) and
achieve a combined fuel
consumption figure of
54.1mpg on the WLTP
combined cycle. The SZ5
ALLGRIP is only just behind
at 105g/km and 48.6mpg on
the combined cycle.
Ignis SZ3 and SZ-T Hybrid
models are currently available
with a £500 Customer saving
as well as low rate Personal
Contract purchase (PCP).
Taking the 1.2-litre SZ3
2WD model as an example
and driving 8,000 miles per
annum, a deposit of £1,516
is all that’s required followed
by 48 monthly payments
of £139 and a final optional
payment of £5,891 to keep
the car. Ignis SZ-T Hybrid is
available with an initial deposit
of £2,237 and just £10 per
month more over the same
duration.

...with launch of
XC40 T5 Twin Engine
mobilitynews

Volvo reaches an
important milestone in its
industry-leading powertrain
electrification programme
with the debut of the new T5
Twin Engine hybrid system in
the multi-award-winning XC40
SUV. The introduction makes
Volvo the only manufacturer
to offer plug-in hybrid versions
across its entire product range,
while the XC40 T5 Twin Engine
is also the only plug-in hybrid
car in the premium compact
SUV segment.
Power and efficiency
The T5 Twin Engine marries
Volvo’s efficient new 1.5-litre
three-cylinder 180hp petrol
engine with an 82hp electric
motor in a hybrid system that
delivers 262hp, making it the
most powerful powertrain in
the XC40 range. This power
is balanced with strong
environmental credentials:
preliminary WLTP figures for
CO2 emissions are from just
38g/km (where 19-inch wheels
are specified), while combined
cycle fuel consumption
is expected to be up to
141.1mpg.
The compact, energydense
lithium-ion battery
has a capacity of 10.7kWh,
enabling exhaust emissionsfree
electric-only driving of up
to 28.6 miles (provisional data),
according to driving conditions
and battery charge levels.
The new T5 Twin Engine
joins two diesel and three
petrol powertrains in the XC40
range, with an all-electric
model joining the line-up
next year to provide a truly
comprehensive choice.
A first for the CMA platform
The T5 Twin Engine is not
only the first hybrid powertrain
in the XC40, it is also the
first to be engineered for use
in Volvo’s CMA (Compact
Modular Architecture) platform.
It is front-wheel drive, in
contrast to the established
T8 Twin Engine (390hp)
powertrain deployed in larger
models built on the SPA
(Scalable Product Architecture)
platform, which has all-wheeldrive
capability.
The powertrain’s efficiency
and performance are
supported by a new sevenspeed
twin-clutch automatic
transmission, featured for the
first time in a new-generation
Volvo model.

Volvo XC40 crowned New Car of the
Year at Motor Trader 2019 Awards
The Volvo XC40 has claimed
yet another significant honour,
adding the New Car of the
Year title in the Motor Trader
2019 Awards to its impressive
collection. Its success confirms
its status as a game-changing
model in the fiercely competitive
premium compact SUV market,
more than a year on from its
UK debut.
Motor Trader’s judging panel
was full of praise, saying: “The
XC40 is a star turn. It shines on
all the crucial fronts: convenient
size, engaging driving dynamics,
impeccable safety credentials
and excellent build quality.
These combine to make it an
outstanding car.”
The XC40 was admired
for its restrained styling in
contrast to more “pumped-up”
SUVs, projecting a look that
is “more mannerly and less
confrontational”. The judges were
also impressed by the car’s
ride, handling, performance and
refinement, which help make
it an accomplished companion
over long distances. Further
appreciation was given to the
“cool Scandinavian interior” and
the impressive array of safety
features fitted to every version in
the range.
Kristian Elvefors, Managing
Director of Volvo Car UK, said:
“This latest award is a fantastic
result, especially because it
names the XC40 as the all-round
best new car on sale. The XC40
has enjoyed an exceptional
reception from the media and
public alike, and we will continue
to develop and improve its
qualities to ensure it remains
the car that sets the standard
in its class.”
The XC40 exemplifies
Volvo’s transformation of its
entire model range. It’s a car
that addresses all the priorities
of today’s premium-market
customers in a package that
is highly desirable yet full of
practical touches to make life
easier. Its popularity has helped
power Volvo’s exceptional UK
sales growth – up 27% in the
first six months of 2019. In fact,
more than 15,000 XC40s have
been snapped up by customers
since its launch in February 2018.
A large part of this appeal
is down to the XC40’s clean,
contemporary Scandinavian
styling, while its cabin is a calm,
comfortable and luxuriously
appointed place to be. It also
delivers the latest in seamless
on-board connectivity with
unmatched safety technology.
The heart of the XC40’s
connectivity is the Volvo Sensus
system, which includes a central
nine-inch touchscreen and
advanced voice-activated control
system. This allows easy control
of the car’s entertainment and
information technology, along
with access to a range of online
apps. A wireless phone charging
pad is also available.
A recipient of the maximum,
five-star rating from independent
safety testing organisation Euro
NCAP, the XC40 has excellent
impact protection engineered
in, while its array of advanced
systems include City Safety,
which alerts you to a collision
risk and can automatically apply
the brakes in an emergency
as required.
The XC40 is available with
a range of Volvo-designed-andbuilt
engines, engineered for
smooth performance with good
fuel economy and low emissions
across the board. Manual and
automatic transmissions are
available, together with frontor
all-wheel drive, depending on
the engine.

New range changes for multiaward
winning Citroën C3 Aircross
Compact SUV
Citroën’s C3 Aircross
Compact SUV – the brand’s
second best-selling model
in the UK, behind the C3
supermini – will benefit from a
number of important changes
from October 2019. Keen to
build on its successful formula
with this multi-award winner,
Citroën UK has focused on
adding greater efficiency,
enhanced comfort and
specification, and new colour
options to the range.
Since launching in the UK
in November 2017, Citroën
C3 Aircross Compact SUV
has won a host of prestigious
awards. This year alone the
accolades include ‘Small SUV
of the Year’ in the Auto Express
New Car Awards; ‘Compact
Crossover of the Year’ in the
Company Car Today CCT100
Awards 2019; and ‘Best Small
SUV’ in the Business Motoring
Awards 2019.
With so many wins already
under its belt, the changes
planned for October 2019 are
carefully designed to make the
model even more compelling
for prospective customers.
mobilitynews
46
C3 Aircross Compact SUV,
like many other models in the
Citroën UK range, has seen
a large proportion of sales
go to the top-level trim, in
this case ‘Flair’, which has so
far accounted for over three
quarters of 2019 sales. This trim
level will therefore be the key
area of focus for the October
2019 changes.
Firstly, from October 2019
production, ‘Flair’ trim will
incorporate the ‘Urban Red’
interior ambiance, as standard.
This vibrant finish more closely
fits the character of C3 Aircross
Compact SUV, with red styling
details throughout. As a brand
synonymous with comfort,
Citroën’s C3 Aircross Compact
SUV ‘Flair’ will also now
include an ergonomic folding
driver’s armrest and seat back
pockets.
New, and exclusive, to the
‘Flair’ trim, will be the Euro 6.3
compliant 1.2L PureTech 130
EAT6 automatic powertrain,
which will help to enhance
performance whilst meeting
the very latest European
emission standards. Even
though the new regulations do
not come into force until 2021,
Citroën has elected to take the
proactive step of introducing
Euro 6.3 petrol drivetrains well
ahead of the deadline. Euro
6.3 engines comply with the
‘Real Driving Emissions Step 2’
(RDE2).
These enhancements to
the ‘Flair’ specification are in
addition to an already lengthy
list of standard equipment. The
list includes 17-inch ‘4 Ever’
alloy wheels; Citroën Connect
Box Emergency & Assistance
System (emergency call
system); Active Safety Brake;
colour reversing camera;
Keyless Entry and Start; and
Citroën Connect Nav with
a three-year subscription to
TomTom® Live for real-time
traffic updates. ‘Flair’ models
will also continue to enjoy
the sliding 60/40 split-folding
rear bench with top tether
anchoring points, which is
particularly useful when fitting
child seats. Access is not
required through the boot, as is
the case with many rivals.
The award-winning C3
Aircross Compact SUV will
remain a standout crowd
pleaser thanks to innovative
styling cues such as the
floating bi-tone roof and highly
customisable colour packs.
C3 Aircross Compact SUV
features up to eight different
body colours: Natural White (F),
Breathing Blue (M), Platinum
Grey (M), Spicy Orange (M),
Soft Sand (M), and – new from
October 2019 – Pepper Red
(M), Cumulus Grey (M) and
Perla Nera Black (M).
Combining the exterior
body colours, bi-tone roof
design, colour options for
roof bars, fog light surrounds,
and rear quarter windows,
there is a wealth of different
combinations that allows every
customer to personalise their
car as they wish.
To celebrate its centenary
in 2019, Citroën has previously
released the C3 Aircross
‘Origins’ Collector’s Edition.
Introduced to pay homage
to 100 years of creativity
and boldness for the brand,
from October 2019, both the
‘Origins’ and the entry level
‘Feel’ trim level will benefit
from the fitment of new
‘A-Class’ low rolling resistance
tyres for further improved
efficiency.
The entire C3 Aircross
Compact SUV range will
continue to offer a host of
safety assistance systems such
as Lane Departure Warning and
Speed Limit Recognition, which
are standard specification on
every version.
It is also possible to add
Citroën’s innovative Grip
Control® system with Hill
Descent Assist as an option
on this class-leading compact
SUV, ensuring customers
can experience unparalleled
comfort and traction when
driving on any road surface.

Range update for Citroën UK’s
best-selling C3 Supermini
Citroën C3, the brand’s
top-selling model in the UK,
will receive several important
updates from October 2019.
Since its launch in 2017, C3
has become a byword for
comfort amongst its peers
in the segment. These latest
range upgrades will further
amplify the model’s customer
appeal and desirability.
Since its UK launch in
January 2017, Citroën’s C3
supermini has soared in
popularity, becoming the
brand’s best-selling model in
the UK – with over 42,000
sales since launch. To reflect
customer demand, and to
build on its current success,
Citroën UK has decided to
simplify the C3 range with
a renewed emphasis on
the most popular ‘upper’
trim levels.
From October 2019
production, the Citroën C3
range will directly reflect
UK consumers’ desire for
upmarket features. The entry
level ‘Touch’ trim level will
be discontinued from the UK
range, whilst – partly due to
the strength of the ‘Origins’
Collector’s Edition – ‘Feel
Nav Edition’ also ceases
production. The previous ‘Flair’
and ‘Flair Nav Edition’ versions
will be replaced with one,
highly appointed ‘Flair Plus’
model. These changes mean
the number of trim levels in
the range will be halved from
six to three. The resulting
three trims will be ‘Feel’,

‘Origins’ and ‘Flair Plus’.
‘Feel’ becomes the new
entry point into the C3 range,
but with nothing ‘entry level’
about the specification. Stylish
16-inch ‘Matrix’ alloy wheels;
MirrorScreen® with Apple
CarPlay and Android Auto;
Lane Departure Warning,
automatic air-conditioning,
7-inch colour touchscreen;
and a choice of up to four
optional roof colours (including
body colour) adorn the ‘Feel’
specification.
Alternatively, customers
can move up to the C3
‘Origins’ Collector’s Edition,
which was introduced earlier
this year to pay homage
to 100 years of creativity
and boldness as part of
the brand’s centenary
celebrations.
Featuring enhanced
specification over and above
the ‘Feel’ specification,
the C3 ‘Origins’ Collector’s
Edition offers a black bi-tone
roof, Airbump® panels and a
bespoke interior ambiance –
features that have all proved
hugely popular since the C3
‘Origins’ specification was
introduced. The ‘Origins’
Collector’s Edition also
features the exclusive
‘Origins’ exterior colour
pack, accented with bronze
highlights and graphics inside
and out.
In addition to the styling
enhancements, C3 ‘Origins’
also provides a technological
showcase with Citroën
Connect Box Emergency
& Assistance System
(emergency call system),
Active Safety Brake, Intelligent
Beam Headlights, Rear
Parking Sensors and Citroën
Connect Nav, all as standard.
The Connect Nav includes
a three-year subscription to
TomTom Live, which provides
real time traffic updates via a
built-in sim card on-board the
vehicle.
Since its UK launch, 62%
of C3 sales have been for the
top two ‘Flair’ and ‘Flair Nav
Edition’ trim levels. So, from
October 2019, both trim levels
will be replaced by a new
‘Flair Plus’ trim that combines
the wider engine and gearbox
choice of outgoing ‘Flair’
models with the enhanced
specification of ‘Flair Nav
Edition’.
The new ‘Flair Plus’
versions will feature the
innovative and award-winning
ConnectedCAM Citroën®
integrated camera system,
Citroën Connect Nav, leather

steering wheel, colour
reversing camera, dark tinted
rear windows and the ‘Urban
Red’ interior ambience. These
features, coupled with the
already lengthy list of standard
equipment, is intended
to surprise and delight
prospective B-segment
hatchback customers.
Already amongst the very
best in its class for efficiency,
October will also see a host
of technical changes that will
make C3 even more efficient.
These include the introduction
of a high efficiency alternator,
an air inlet shutter and a
variety of hidden underbody
panels to reduce drag.
These changes, coupled
with the fitment of new
‘A-Class’ low rolling resistance
tyres, will result in genuine
efficiency benefits for Citroën
customers.
Unique styling cues have
always been synonymous
with C3. Since launch, 65%
of owners have opted for a
bi-tone roof option, whilst
55% have opted for the highly
distinctive and protective
Airbump® panels. With a
choice of four roof colours
(includes body colour) and
nine body colours, buyers will
have no problem personalising
their C3 to their exact needs.

Kia wins Car-Maker of the Year at
Motor Trader Industry Awards 2019
Kia Motors (UK) Limited has
another reason to celebrate as
the brand has been awarded
the accolade of ‘Car-Maker
of the Year’ at the Motor
Trader Industry Awards 2019.
Acknowledged as one of
the most prestigious awards
event in the vehicle retailing
calendar, the awards highlight
excellence in business across
the board. The awards were
hosed by actor, writer and
presenter Alexander Armstrong
and Motor Trader editor John
Kirwan.
This recognition follows
on from an important 12
months for the brand as
Kia continues to grow in an
industry experiencing a decline,
selling over 95,000 cars in 2018
and setting a new record for
half-year sales total in 2019
with 53,232 new cars being
delivered to customers by the
end of June.
This long-standing and
continual success is down to
Kia’s diverse and competitive
product range, but also the
special relationship between
the corporate headquarters and
the 192-strong dealer network
who work together with mutual
respect and consideration.
John Kirwan, Editor of
Motor Trader, said: “Kia was
the unanimous winner of the
Carmaker of the Year Award in
2019 because of the strength
of its model line-up, its close
relationship with its dealer
network, strong new car sales
performance in 2018 and
profitability of the franchise.”
On collecting the award, Paul
Philpott, President and CEO of
Kia Motors (UK) Limited said:
“We are lucky to be supported
by a fantastic 192-strong dealer
network, who all represent
our brand and product offering
perfectly. We’re incredibly
proud of the relationship with
our dealer partners which has
been nurtured and expanded
significantly over the years,
and it’s certainly the reason
we’ve been recognised for
this award.”

SEAT accelerates its electric
offensive at the Frankfurt IAA
SEAT arrives at the Frankfurt
Motor Show with its electric
offensive in top gear. Following
the announcement of the SEAT
Mii electric and the el-Born, the
brand’s first two fully electric
models, at the international
event CUPRA is presenting its
new Tavascan concept car. It will
be joined in by the new SEAT
Tarraco FR PHEV, the brand’s
first plug-in hybrid electric SUV,
which will be making its world
debut in Frankfurt and is the
fourth electric model of the six
that the company announced it
would launch by 2021.
Following the CUPRA
Formentor, the first model
developed specifically for
the brand, equipped with a
hybrid engine and scheduled
for market release next year,
the Tavascan concept car is
CUPRA’s first fully electric
vehicle, and it was developed
on the MEB platform.
SEAT touches down in
Frankfurt after achieving the
highest January to August
sales figure in its history. The
company’s worldwide deliveries
went up by 7.2% for a total
volume of 411,600 cars.
In a press conference,
SEAT President Luca de Meo
stated that “the IAA comes
at a great time for us, with
historic sales and financial
results. Our position enables
us to remain committed to
and continue investing in
mobility for future generations
with solutions that adapt for
tomorrow. Electrification is
a key part of this mobility, as
are micromobility and the
development of solutions that
cater to it.”
The new CUPRA Tavascan
and the SEAT Tarraco FR PHEV
represent a step forward in
their electric mobility offensive.
The CUPRA concept car
merges the solidity of an SUV
with the sportiness of a coupe,
conceived with the highest
standards of sophistication,
elegance and design that
distinguish the brand. In the
boot it integrates the concept
CUPRA eXS kickScooter,
specially developed for the
occasion.
Furthermore, the new SEAT
Tarraco is now available in a
hybrid engine version and FR
trim, featuring a range of more
than 50 km and emissions
below 50 g/km. Delivering 245
hp thanks to its 110 kW/150 hp
petrol engine and its 85 kW/116
hp electric motor, the Tarraco
PHEV is the most powerful in
the range.
At a press conference, SEAT
Vice-president for R&D Axel
Andorff emphasised that “the
plug-in hybrid Tarraco perfectly
illustrates our strategy towards
more sustainable mobility, and
at the same time it retains all
the dynamism and driving fun
that characterise any SEAT
model and especially our FR
models.”
SEAT is announcing at
Frankfurt motor show that presales
of the new Mii electric will
begin from late autumn in the
UK – pricing will be announced
when the EV opens for order,
contributing to affordable
electric mobility with a vehicle
that is agile and urban.
The Mii electric is being sold
in 14 countries (Spain, Germany,
Italy, France, the UK, Austria,
Belgium, the Netherlands,
Switzerland, Denmark, Finland,
Norway, Sweden and Poland)
and will enter the market in
early 2020.
Coinciding with the
commercial launch of the
new Mii electric, SEAT will
introduce a smart wallbox home
charging device. Customers
can purchase the device,
installation included, along with
the vehicle, and it will enable
them to optimise the car’s
recharging time and manage all
the information on their mobile
phone or via an online platform.
To continue boosting the
future of motor racing, CUPRA
presents Mattias Ekström as
a new brand ambassador. The
Swedish race driver joins the
tribe to lead CUPRA’s electric
racing strategy. In addition,
Ekström will become the
official driver of the CUPRA
e-Racer at the future electric
racing competitions and will
collaborate on the development
of the brand’s electric racing
models.

High rankings for Suzuki from
What Car? readers
Suzuki is celebrating some
good news from the results of
the 2019 What Car? Reliability
Survey in which over 18,000
readers reported on their car
ownership experience from
new and up to five years old
as well as a separate poll of
ownership of cars over five
years old.
Of the 31 car brands
measured, Suzuki ranked
third in the league table with
a score of 97.3 per cent and
when ownership experience
was measured from cars over
five years old Suzuki was
second with a score of 92.0
per cent. The total sample size
of Suzuki owners for this year’s
survey was 254 and What Car?
measured 218 different models
across the industry.
The Celerio model won
the City and Small car class
with owners reporting 98.9
per cent reliability during their
ownership period placing it
way ahead of the 94.7 per cent
average reliability score for the
class. In the small SUV sector,
Vitara was not far behind either
with a score of 97.6 per cent
from an average sector score
of 93.3 per cent.
Editor of What Car?
magazine Steve Huntingford
comments: “Long-term
dependability is important for
used car buyers and anyone
wanting to keep their car for a
long time. Suzuki is one of a
few brands whose cars remain
persistently reliable as the
years pile on.”
All Vitara models are
currently available with zero per
cent APR Personal Contract
purchase (PCP). Taking the
top of the range 1.4-litre SZ5
model as an example and
driving 10,000 miles per
annum, a deposit of £2,629 is
all that’s required followed by
36 monthly payments of £289
and a final optional payment of
£9,466 to keep the car.

ŠKODA KAMIQ scores maximum
five stars in Euro NCAP test
The ŠKODA KAMIQ
has received a maximum
five stars in its test by the
independent European New
Car Assessment Programme
(Euro NCAP). This makes the
maker’s first city SUV yet
another model to be counted
among the safest in its class.
The KAMIQ did particularly
well in protecting adult
occupants and cyclists.
Christian Strube, ŠKODA
AUTO Board Member for
Technical Development,
explains: “The active and
passive safety of our vehicles
is a top priority for ŠKODA.
The fact that the KAMIQ,
our latest model, has now
received another maximum
five-star score in the Euro
NCAP crash test shows
what a high bar we have set
ourselves for the safety of
our vehicles and provides
another demonstration of how
successful our engineering
work is in this area.”
The ŠKODA KAMIQ
successfully completed the
comprehensive Euro NCAP
crash and safety tests,
achieving a maximum five-star
score. The Euro NCAP testers
were pleasantly surprised with
how well the latest addition
to the ŠKODA model portfolio
protected adult occupants as
well as cyclists. The city SUV
scored 96 per cent for the
protection of adult occupants
in the interior – an impressive
results in Euro NCAP history.
And testers awarded the
KAMIQ the full rating for
cyclist protection, reflecting
above all the beneficial effect
of the Front Assist with
Predictive Pedestrian and
Cyclist Protection and City
Emergency Brake function
included as standard.
In the event of an accident,
the KAMIQ protects its
occupants with up to nine
airbags, including an optional
knee airbag for the driver
and rear side airbags.
Additional safety features
include the Multi-Collision
Brake, the optional Crew
Protect Assist proactive
occupant protection system
as well as ISOFIX and toptether
anchor points on the
rear seat bench and front
passenger seat to ensure
optimal protection of small
children at all times. Standard
equipment for the ŠKODA
KAMIQ also includes Lane
Assist, while the optional
Side Assist alerts drivers to
vehicles approaching from
behind or in the car’s blind
spot. The combined effect
of these assistance systems
earned the KAMIQ a score
of 3.5 out of a maximum of
four points.
Like the equally fivestar-rated
compact ŠKODA
SCALA, the KAMIQ is based
on the Volkswagen Group’s
MQB-A0 platform, which
features state-of-the-art safety
and assistance systems. This
city SUV’s extremely stiff body
with its large deformation
zones and extremely robust
occupant cell ensures superior
passive safety, with ŠKODA
using an almost 80-per-cent
share of high-strength or
specially hardened steels in
this part of the vehicle.

Hyundai Motor reveals first sketch
of the all-new i10
Hyundai Motor has revealed
the first sketch of the All-New
i10 ahead of its public world
premiere later this year at the
2019 Frankfurt Motor Show
(IAA). The latest addition to the
Korean automaker’s i-range
features a new-look dynamic
design, which shows a contrast
between its soft surfaces and
sharp lines. Proportions for
the all-new model have been
redefined in width, height and
wheel size, resulting in an
energetic and agile look.
The All-New i10 has a young
and dynamic design that
stands out in the A-segment.
Its wide front grille expresses
a sporty character and
incorporates the Daytime
Running Lights, thus
continuing this
feature of
the i10’s
heritage. The triangular air
curtains accentuate the width
and stance of the car, as well
as improving aerodynamics.
The X-shaped C-pillar, visible
from far away, clearly identifies
the car and draws the eye to
the pillar-mounted logo. Unique
triangular volumes visually
emphasise the width of the car
and highlight the position of
the wheels at the four corners.
Set to become a leader
in its segment, the All-New
i10 will also feature a range
of new Connected Car and
safety features. Blue Link®,
Apple Car Play, Android
Auto, wireless smartphone
charging and a rear-view
camera offer a comprehensive
driving experience without
compromise. The new model
has one of the most fullfeatured
safety packages in
its class. Forward Collision-
Avoidance Assist utilises a
front radar sensor to detect not
just cars but also pedestrians
in front of the vehicle. The
car is also equipped with
Driver Attention Warning and
Lane Keep Assist System
as standard. Drivers of the
All-New i10 can also add the
optional High Beam Assist
feature.
More details about the All-
New i10 will be released in the
near future.

SEAT Tarraco FR PHEV: technology,
sportiness and efficiency
SEAT is expanding the
efficiency and desirability of
the Tarraco, introducing plug-in
hybrid powertrain technology
and the sporty FR trim. The
Tarraco plug-in hybrid is a
demonstration of SEAT strategy
towards electrification, which
will include six electric and
plug-in hybrid SEAT and CUPRA
models until the beginning
of 2021.
SEAT sold a record 369,500
vehicles in the first seven
months of the year, with 55,200
vehicles sold in July alone,
a 7.8% increase over 2018.
The Tarraco is contributing
to increase the company’s
presence globally, and the
introduction of both the FR trim
and plug-in hybrid technology
will be key components in
achieving its targets.
“The Tarraco plug-in hybrid
perfectly illustrates our move
towards a more sustainable
mobility, yet maintaining the
dynamism and fun-to-drive,
typical of any SEAT. The Tarraco
will be one of the few options
with a plug-in hybrid powertrain
on the large SUV segment, and
we believe
that it has a great potential,” said
Luca de Meo, President of SEAT.
Plug-in hybrid version:
pure efficiency
Designed and developped
at SEAT’s facilities in Martorell,
the SEAT Tarraco is being
produced in Wolfsburg
(Germany), at the heart of the
Volkswagen Group. With the
introduction of the plug-in
hybrid powertrain system, the
SEAT Tarraco will gain added
efficiency, becoming a very
sustainable alternative.
The powertrain system,
which comprises a 1.4 litre
TSI 110 kW petrol engine, 85
kW electric motor and a 13
kWh lithium-ion battery pack,
gives drivers the adaptability of
multiple driving modes. The plugin
hybrid Tarraco allows users
to drive in pure-electric mode
for more than 50km should
they need to, reducing tailpipe
emissions to zero, or combine
the petrol engine and electric
motor to provide increased
performance.
The technology will help
the SUV – and SEAT – improve
efficiency without the need to
make sacrifices in dynamics or
comfort.
Total output for the system is
245PS (180kW)/400Nm giving
the plug-in hybrid Tarraco a top
speed of 217km/h and the ability
to reach 100km/h in just 7.4
seconds. But importantly, CO2
emissions will be below 50g/km
on the official WLTP test cycle.

Volvo Car UK has sustained
its exceptional new car sales

impressive 27% increase in
sales volume on the same

The XC40 compact

All roads lead to a multi-million
bestseller: Vauxhall Corsa
through the years
Vauxhall is preparing to
launch the newest generation
of its best-selling Corsa,
building on the great success of
the previous versions that have
proved so popular since the
model was introduced in 1993.
In fact, Vauxhall’s first
supermini offering was called
Nova, not Corsa, and launched
in the UK in 1982. It wasn’t until
1993 that British buyers saw its
all-new replacement, known as
‘Corsa’, which came equipped
with the latest in high-tech kit,
such as a tape player (!) – a
world apart from the latest
Corsa’s new infotainment
systems with 10.0-inch colour
touch screens available.
Ever since then, through
four generations, the Corsa
has been a sales sensation,
selling 2.1 million cars in the UK
since 1993, while also proving
popular in Europe with over
13.5 million sold.
Corsa B: 1993 to 2000
This first Corsa was
designed to appeal to a broader
audience. A much rounder,
softer design was created,
with ‘saucer-eye’ headlamps to
tie in with its cute looks. This
model was longer and more
spacious than the Nova, and
also introducing higher safety
standards for its segment, with
features such as ABS braking,
side-impact protection and front
airbags. The petrol GSi model
featured 16 valves, while the
diesel engine version became
turbo-charged.
Corsa C: 2000 to 2006
Styling for this generation
of Vauxhall Corsa was not too
far removed from the popular
previous model. However, the
model grew in length again,
and had a wider stance with
a longer wheelbase, which
greatly increased interior
space. For the first time, the
body was fully galvanised,
while a sophisticated four-valve
ECOTEC petrol and new directinjection
turbo diesel engine
option ensured greater power,
lower fuel consumption and low
emission values, complying with
Euro 4 emissions standards.
Corsa D: 2006: 2014
Vauxhall began to separate
out design language for threeand
five-door models, with
the smaller car giving nods
to the earlier Nova’s sporty
appearance. The five-door car
became a spacious, familyfocused
car. The model grew in
length again, but not exceeding
four metres in length. This
version of the car gained
ecoFLEX technology with fuelsaving
Start/Stop systems and
highly efficient engines.

Corsa E: 2014 to 2019
Dynamic, practical and
stylish, this version of the
Vauxhall Corsa was a segment
leader in technology. A heated
steering wheel, heated seats
and automatic climate control
were available, along with a
front camera with sensors,
Traffic Sign Recognition
and Lane Keep Assist. The
infotainment system brought
with it Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto,and a seveninch
touch screen became
standard. Now at its longest
at 4.02 metres, this Corsa line
spawned GSi and VXR models
that produced between 150hp
and 210hp
All-New Corsa: 2019 –
present, an electric age
Heading full-speed into the
future, the newest generation
of Corsa will feature a fully
electric powertrain for the first
time, in addition to petrol and
diesel-powered engines. For
the first time in the small car
segment, the Corsa offers
adaptive glare-free IntelliLux
LED matrix lighting, as well as
other state-of-the-art features
such as Forward Collision
Alert, Automatic Emergency
Braking and radar-based
Adaptive Speed Control.
The new Corsa’s handling is
improved with a lower centre
of gravity, while the driver’s
H-point has lowered by 28mm,
giving a more engaged feel
behind the wheel. A coupe-like
profile has been achieved with
a 48mm-lower roofline, yet
front passenger headroom has
actually increased.
The latest Corsa is on sale
now and will reach Vauxhall
showrooms in January.

Kia Motors reveals efficient, lowemissions
plug-in hybrid variants of
Kia XCeed and Ceed Sportswagon
Kia Motors has taken
the next step in its vehicle
electrification strategy with the
unveiling of new Plug-in Hybrid
variants of the Kia XCeed and
Ceed Sportswagon. Due to go
on sale across Europe at the
beginning of 2020, the two
new low-emissions models
represent the first time Kia has
brought electrified powertrains
to the compact family segment.
Emilio Herrera, Chief
Operating Officer at Kia Motors
Europe, commented: “These
two models represent an
important next stage for Kia as
we introduce advanced, nextgeneration
powertrains to our
wider vehicle line-up. Sales
of the new Ceed range have
grown 40.1 per cent year-onyear
in the first half of 2019, and
new Plug-in Hybrid variants will
further widen the appeal of the
line-up.
“In the first half of 2019,
electrified models accounted
for around one in seven Kia
cars sold in Europe, a trend
which is only accelerating,”
Herrera added. “While other
brands talk about their future
plans for electrification, Kia
has already launched a whole
range of electrified vehicles. Our
line-up of mild-hybrid, hybrid,
plug-in hybrid and electric cars
now provide buyers with more
choice and lower running costs
across multiple segments.”
The Kia XCeed and Ceed
Sportswagon Plug-in Hybrid
will be built in Žilina, Slovakia
– the first plug-in models built
by the brand in Europe. Kia’s
unrivalled seven-year, 100,000-
mile warranty are offered as
standard, extending to cover
the new powertrain’s battery
pack and motor. Built exclusively
for Europe, sales of these
new models will commence
at the beginning of 2020. UK
specification, pricing and onsale
date will be announced in
due course.
Plug-in power with low
emissions and all-electric
driving capability
The new Kia XCeed and Ceed
Sportswagon Plug-in Hybrids
offer a compelling alternative to
conventional petrol and diesel
models. The new powertrain
combines an 8.9 kWh lithiumpolymer
battery pack, a 44.5 kW
electric motor, and an efficient
1.6-litre ‘Kappa’ four-cylinder
GDI (gasoline direct injection)
engine. The powertrain’s total
power and torque output is
139 bhp (141 ps) and 265 Nm,
enabling the Ceed Sportswagon
to accelerate from 0-to-100 kph
in 10.8 seconds, and the Kia
XCeed in 11.0 seconds.
The powertrain is paired
with a six-speed dual-clutch
auto transmission (6DCT),
allowing drivers to shift gear
for themselves, ensuring a
more enjoyable drive than
other hybrid vehicles equipped
with electronic continuouslyvariable
transmissions (e-CVT).
Traditional e-CVT hybrids convert
a portion of engine output
through the electric motor,
resulting in power losses from
energy conversion. Kia’s 6DCT
differs by allowing the full output
of both the engine and motor to
be transferred in parallel through
the transmission, with minimal
loss of energy.
Standard regenerative
braking technology allows the
new Plug-in Hybrid models
to harvest kinetic energy and
recharge their battery packs
while coasting or braking,
further enhancing the overall
efficiency of the powertrain.
Kia is targeting an all-electric
range of around 60 kilometres
for both vehicles, enabling
drivers to complete the majority
of daily drives and short
commutes on electric power
alone. CO2 emissions for the
new Plug-in Hybrid variants are
pending homologation and will
be revealed prior to start-ofsales.
Both vehicles are equipped
with Kia’s new Virtual Engine
Sound System, an audible
warning system which activates
in electric-only mode at low
speeds or when reversing. The
system generates virtual sound

sportier overall appearance.
Inside, the sporty cabin
design retains the same
driver-oriented dashboard, low
seating position and everyday
ergonomics of the existing
Ceed line-up. However, the new
Plug-in Hybrid models feature
a range of new functionalities
to enhance usability for owners
looking to extract the most out
of the new powertrain.
Both vehicles are equipped
with a charging indicator, a
visual aid to tell owners that
their car is charging or when
the battery is fully-charged. Its
location on top of the dashboard
means drivers can instantly
ascertain the car’s state of
charge at a glance from outside
the car (for instance, when it
is parked on their driveway at
home and the owner hasn’t left
the house yet).
Both cars offer Kia’s 8.0-inch
touchscreen infotainment, or an
optional 10.25-inch touchscreen
infotainment and navigation
system with Kia’s UVO Connect
telematics. Unique to the
new Plug-in Hybrid variants,
the systems incorporate new
functionality to help owners
locate available charging points
in their vicinity, or en route to
their navigation destination.
The screens can show relevant
information relating to the
powertrain, displaying remaining
charge levels in the battery and
energy usage graphics. Owners
can use the touchscreen
system to schedule when their
vehicle should charge when
plugged in at home, enabling
owners to take advantage of
cheaper off-peak energy tariffs.
Both infotainment systems offer
Apple CarPlay and Android
Auto as standard, while the
optional 10.25-inch touchscreen
navigation system features

Kia XCeed PHEV
Bluetooth ® multi-connection,
enabling occupants to connect
two mobile devices at once.
The instrument cluster
features unique visuals for
the Plug-in Hybrid powertrain,
displaying remaining charge
levels, anticipated electriconly
range and the flow of
energy between the battery
pack, engine and electric
motor. Available as an option,
Kia’s new fully-digital 12.3-
inch ‘Supervision’ instrument
cluster is designed to deliver
information as clearly as
possible with a range of unique
graphics displays. The highresolution
1920x720-pixel
Supervision display replaces
conventional speedometer and
tachometer dials currently found
in the brand’s passenger cars
with a single, seamless display.
The ‘Driver Only’ heating,
ventilation and air-conditioning
system – activated with a new
button on the dashboard –
instantly deactivates airflow
to all cabin vents except
those nearest the driver.
This is designed to reduce
the draw on battery energy
from the ventilation system,
while still keeping the driver at
their preferred temperature.
Unlike conventional ventilation
systems, Kia’s ‘Driver Only’
system doesn’t simply
restrict airflow to certain
vents, rerouting it elsewhere;
instead, it switches off the fans
themselves, reducing energy
use at source.
Intelligent powertrain
packaging and everyday
usability
The Ceed model line-up
was engineered from the start
to accommodate new hybrid
powertrains. This means that
the adoption of a Plug-in Hybrid
powertrain in the Kia XCeed and
Ceed Sportswagon has had a
minimal impact on packaging,
with the structure adapted
from the start to contain the
powertrain’s battery pack.
The 8.9 kWh battery pack is
located alongside the 37-litre
fuel tank beneath the rear
bench, unlike many other plugin
hybrid vehicles, in which the
battery pack takes up valuable
cargo space. As a Plug-in
Hybrid, the Ceed Sportswagon
– the most practical iteration of
the Ceed range – provides 437
litres of luggage space, and up
to 1,506 litres with the 40:20:40
split-fold rear seats folded
down. Luggage capacity in the
Kia XCeed Plug-in Hybrid is 291
litres, growing to 1,243 litres
with the rear folded down. There
is a dedicated space beneath
the boot floor of each car to
store the charging cable when
not in use.
Both models will be available
with an optional Towing Pack for
towing braked loads – a rarity
among cars in the hybrid class.
