The winners of the 2019 EIFS Hero Awards were
acknowledged at an awards ceremony during the industrywide
annual meeting of the EIFS Industry Members
Association (EIMA) held in March 2020.

The Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut is a
temporary “home away from home” for families of
children who are being treated at nearby hospitals and
healthcare facilities. The design-build team of this project
wanted to break through barriers of traditional EIFS and
create a state-of-the-art building. By using the design
flexibility of EIFS in a variety of ways, this project has a
fun and whimsical-like façade and its unique appearance
is both uplifting and pleasing to the eye, important in
keeping the spirits high of the visiting families.

EIFS HERO OF THE YEAR: RUNNER-UP

Originally built in 1965 using concrete panels over clad with baseball size
granite stones embedded in cement, this project was in trouble. The stones
were coming loose and falling off the façade, putting pedestrians below at
risk. The Owner’s choice was to over clad the building with metal panels,
which proved to be too expensive. Instead, using EIFS and a light gauge
steel grid system, was the perfect solution. The renovation, a framing
masterpiece, was completed without interruption of the occupied building.
The use of color makes the improved project stand out, and its new
appearance is both bold and handsome. According to the EIFS applicator, it
was the most dramatic transformation ever completed in the firm’s history.

EIFS was an ideal choice for this residential project due to
its adaptability to Passive House construction: providing
an all-in-one approach to the building envelope, and
single point responsibility for all air sealing, insulation and
exterior finishes. The owner’s desired massive look of
the exterior walls, with crisp, deep recesses at windows
was easily achieved with EIFS. Additionally, the design
flexibility of EIFS, including color and texture choices, and
the ability to create the deep horizontal bands and sharp,
clean panel divisions, was advantageous. From a building
code standpoint, EIFS was the cleanest approach, and from
a cost perspective, choosing EIFS was a no-brainer. This
unique and contemporary home demonstrates the power
of designing with EIFS.

Station Park is a multi-use development offering over 100
retail and specialty shopping destinations with more than 20
restaurants and eateries, as well as commercial space. Phase
II was highlighted by the construction of the Hyatt Place hotel
and additional retail space. The project is a custom design
featuring high-end architectural finishes and accents to create
an upscale aesthetic. The EIFS finishes achieved an old-world
plaster finish without the complexities of traditional plaster
mixes and applications. The design flexibility offered by EIFS
gave the owner an energy-efficient, beautiful building in a highprofile,
growing area.

This project involved a retrofit of an 8-building complex originally faced
with brick. In order to provide energy-efficiency, the owner decided
to use EIFS. The new exterior now gives the complex a fun and fresh
new look with a variety of colors. This project touts a contemporary,
fashion-forward appearance, with eye-catching colors.

River Park Apartments is a multi-family development with
100+ units that utilizes some of the newest and most
efficient materials in the EIFS industry, while preserving the
appearance of traditional masonry elements. Handsome
in its own right, the project also utilized finishes with mica
chips and multi-colored quartz, imitating the look and
feel of real granite. At 1/35th the weight of real granite,
the EIFS finish provided significant savings in the total
construction cost, including materials shipping.
The bold vision of the owner/developer of this project made Nashville’s
oldest suburb new again. Now home to millennials and no longer an
industrial haven, Germantown’s emerging multi-family, mixed use heritage
has been taken to a new level thanks to the rich architectural tapestry of
the LC Germantown project. The EIFS manufacturer’s unique ability to facilitate podium
construction and provide needed design flexibility played an integral role in the success of
the four-building, 411 unit, 425,000 square foot mixed use multi-family development. The
end result was an “industrial chic” project with great amenities and a complex, textured
exterior to distinguish it in the marketplace. And by using EIFS, the owner obtained the
desired exterior appearance and saved $4 million on the project cost.

Crescent Shores Resort is comprised of two oceanfront,
18-story buildings in North Myrtle Beach, SC. The original
deteriorating stucco clad buildings were in need of repair,
and a complete over-clad using EIFS was the answer. Not
only was there a significant cost-savings in re-cladding the
structures with EIFS, but in addition, using EIFS provided
increased energy-efficiency for condo owners, as well as a
fresh, new look with a bold style.
Mary Our Queen Catholic Church is an expansive and
impressive testament to the marriage of old and
new. The owner wanted to create the elegant look
and feel reminiscent of other iconic, world-renowned
structures of its type. EIFS became the ideal choice
with its ability to provide a system with a limestone
appearance. The high-performance system features
continuous insulation and a continuous air and water
resistive barrier. Additionally, the finish is highly
durable and weather-resistant, helping the church
achieve the desired exterior aesthetic as well as
reduced energy and maintenance costs.

Magic Village Phase II is an upscale
multi-family project located outside of
Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
The owner chose an EIFS façade for

air and moisture barrier, drainage,
