Club member David Oakley<br />
will be jumpingonthe back<br />
of an older model49cc<br />
scooter when he tackles the<br />
Tranz Alpine Scooter<br />
Safari.<br />
The1989Yamaha Riva<br />
Razz has sat in Mr Oakley’s<br />
garage formuchofthe past<br />
20 years, but it will be<br />
cleaned up and givenafew<br />
runs outahead of the<br />
November 7safari.<br />
Thebiennialscootertrek<br />
takes 250 ridersfrom<br />
ChristchurchtoHokitika<br />
on ascenic 250km trip and<br />
is afundraiser for the<br />
Canterbury/West Coast<br />
divisionofNew Zealand<br />
CancerSociety.<br />
Mr Oakleyhopes to raise<br />
$1000 for the cause andhis<br />
mates at the VintageCar<br />
Club have already chipped<br />
in $100.<br />
‘‘I agreed to do it in a<br />
weak momentwhen fellow<br />
car club member Danny<br />
Symons suggested it.<br />
‘‘But, actually, Idothink<br />
you do need to have abitof<br />
fun andsense of adventure<br />
in life, no matter how old<br />
you are.’’<br />
Mr Oakley, who is 71, said<br />
he expected better weather<br />
and road conditions in<br />
Novemberthanthe<br />
original safari date of May.<br />
He intended beingseen<br />
on theroad andhad plans<br />
to dress up as abright<br />
yellow daffodil.<br />
Mr Oakley’s wife Marion<br />
will act as his advanced<br />
support crew, and an<br />
officialsupport crew will<br />
followthe processionover<br />
to the Coast.<br />
‘‘I’m notsure how I’ll go<br />
over Porters Pass, but I<br />
hope to complete the safari<br />
in six to sevenhours.<br />
‘‘Luckily Idon’t have to<br />
scooterback as well.’’<br />
Mr Oakley’s usual driving<br />
pride and joy is a1926<br />
Austin 12, an impressive<br />
1800ccbeauty that he takes<br />
on carclub drives and<br />
longer trips.<br />

Long journey to new skatepark<br />

A13year journey will be<br />
realisedonSaturday when<br />
Methven’s brandnew<br />
skatepark is officially<br />
unveiled.<br />
Theimpressive park<br />
featuresridewalls,skate<br />
bowls and other challenges<br />
and is located on council<br />
land on thecorner of Bank<br />
and McMillan streets.<br />
The public openingtakes<br />
places at 1pm.<br />
Andspecialmemorial<br />
tree willbeplanted at<br />
11.30am in memory of the<br />
late KenLowe, an early,<br />
passionate supporter of the<br />
project.<br />
Theskate parkproject<br />
has been adream driven by<br />
Kidz Methven since 2007.<br />

project exceeded<br />
expectations, but hadbeen<br />
along timeinthe making.<br />
‘‘It’s agreat facility and<br />
somethingthat we as a<br />
committee are reallyvery<br />

lost momentum for awhile,<br />

$130,000 has beenraised<br />
for the project and the<br />
builders had ‘‘gone above<br />
andbeyond’’onit.<br />
Therehad also been good<br />
community support,<br />
including at arecent<br />
plantingday.<br />

have beenreceivedfrom<br />
Advance <strong>Ashburton</strong>, New<br />
Zealand Community Trust,<br />
MidandSouth Canterbury<br />
Trust, Mackenzie<br />
Charitable Foundationand<br />
MethvenLions.<br />
In early 2000 there wasa<br />
popular indoor skatepark<br />
in Methven, but the<br />
privatelyowned venuewas<br />
damaged in the 2011<br />
earthquake.<br />

securedasite on land near<br />
The Dubliner, butitwas<br />
decided it wasnot suitable<br />
because it was too closeto<br />
the mainroad.<br />
