A note about the art
in this scrapbook
All the art in this
scrapbook is my own
original fan art.
However, all the
characters and settings
are based off the
movie Spirited Away,
which is the theme for
my scrapbook (Theme
Explanation is on the
next page). To the left
are a of the few
methods that I used to
draw out the artwork.
Spirited Away is a popular movie created by Studio Ghibli, well-known animation film studio. Heavily
influenced by Japanese mythology and folklore, Hayao Miyazaki wrote and directed this fantasy film,
where the main character Chihiro ends up in a world of spirits and tries to save her parents, who have
turned into pigs (more information on this movie are in the references at the end of this scrapbook).
This year's NJCL Convention theme is Omnes...summa ope niti decet, ne vitam silentio transeant.
(Sallust, Bellum Catilinae 1.1) "It befits all to strive with greatest effort, lest they pass their lives in silence."
In Spirited Away, Chihiro definitely embodies the essence of this quote. She develops from a scared child
to a hardworking and brave character who is willing to sacrifice for those that she cares about. At all
times, Chihiro strives with her greatest effort for those she cares for, making sure she positively impacts
every person and spirit she meets.
I have always loved Studio Ghibli movies, not only because of the beautiful and extremely detailed
animation but also because of the smooth incorporation of mythology and fantasy into each movie. While
Japanese myths are different from Greek myths, there are still many aspects that are the same for both
cultures: the world began as Chaos, food eaten in the Underworld affects the one who ate it (Persephone;
Izanagi), and that the sun and moon are siblings (Apollo and Artemis; Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu). I
specifically chose to connect Greek mythology to the mythology of another culture because now, more
than ever, is the time to learn about and empathize with those of other cultures. When we listen to the
stories of other people, these stories "can stimulate, amaze and inspire their listeners" (Miyazaki).
With that being said, I hope this scrapbook reminds you of the beautiful memories we have shared
together this year and that you'll be inspired to strive with your greatest effort to live passionately and to

North Dakota State University
National Convention is the highlight of many
JCLers' summers. Each person travels to an
unknown university, ready to meet new friends,
yell at the top of their lungs in the stadium, and
make lifelong memories together for a week.
National Convention marks the start of their JCL
journey for some newbies and the end for many
graduating seniors. No matter how many times
you've been to National Convention, this one week
never fails to be one of the best weeks of your life.

Excited to play certamen, many GJCLers gathered at
Walton on a Saturday afternoon to compete. However,
it began snowing! For a warm state like Georgia, snow
is a rare and exciting sight to see. To avoid icy roads
for everyone's safety, the tournament was cut short
and players were sent home early.

A Virtual World
As with many other JCLs across the country, our year was cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak. School
was online for the rest of the year, and most importantly, State Convention was cancelled. While it is
unfortunate many seniors never got to say their goodbyes and JCLers were devastated that they couldn't
go to Rock Eagle like normal, we tried to engage everyone online as much as possible!

2020 Virtual GJCL Convention
In order to ensure the safety and health of GJCLers, the state of Georgia was on lockdown until
April 28. During this period of isolation, we are like Boh, Yubaba's baby, who is locked away in
his playroom and isolated for his entire life so he doesn't come in contact with germs or
anything dangerous. While Boh is saved by Chihiro and is able to explore a part of the spirit
world with her, hopefully, we'll be able to adventure freely soon.
When traveling through the
spirit world, Boh is
transformed into a mouse.
