PEGASUS POST Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Thursday July 16 2020 3 News Clock tower restoration finished • By Bea Gooding AFTER YEARS of delays, efforts to restore the iconic New Brighton Clock Tower have succeeded in turning back time on the much loved landmark. The heritage clock tower, in front of the New Brighton Library building, suffered damage caused by the February 2011 earthquake and decades of exposure to the seaside environment. Work to repair the structure began in July last year but was delayed by additional work being needed and the recent lockdown. The restoration project cost $900,000. New Brighton Business and Landowners Association chairwoman Rebecca Tavete was thrilled with the results, especially after initial frustrations due to the delays and costs. “It looks beautiful, we’ve been presented with a stunning clock tower and it’s so iconic to the area,” she said. She believed its completion had boosted community spirits. “All good things take time. There were fundamental issues going on that perhaps a lot of us don’t understand, but we can only be joyous now for some results. “It’s like waiting for Christmas Hon Poto WILLIAMS MP for Christchurch East SUCCESS: The New Brighton Clock Tower can once again tell the time, much to the delight of the community after years of delays. PHOTO: NEWSLINE when you’re a kid, it feels like it’s never coming, but once we get there, it’s over and done with pretty quickly.” The restoration, carried out by local contractor Cook Brothers Construction Ltd for the city council, involved a significant upgrade of the building’s structural integrity and retention of its original appearance This included the replacement of two cracked, internal concrete floors, the inclusion of additional steel reinforcing as well as a corrosion prevention treatment for the concrete surfaces. New Brighton resident Robbie Baigent worked in construction and understood the delays, which he believed was worth the wait. “It would’ve been nice to have seen it done faster but I’m pleased it’s done, it looks really good,” he said. The clock tower was fenced and wrapped in protective plastic in 2018 during structural investigations. The assessments revealed significant damage to the concrete and structural steel caused by the earthquakes and environmental damage. Scaffolding, which was costing ratepayers $1500 a month, was removed from the clock tower just before the country went into lockdown. Said city council head of parks Andrew Rutledge: “The tower is looking its best with fresh paintwork in the original 1930s colour scheme. I think locals and visitors will see the iconic structure with fresh eyes after this very careful and thorough restoration. “We do want to let people know that the mechanism for the clock is complex so there might be some initial, minor issues with its timekeeping accuracy. This will be monitored and some fine-tuning might be necessary.” Priorities laid out for east • From page 1 Liaising with the New Zealand Transport Agency for the repair of roads which are its responsibility will also be a strategy the board employs in attempting to improve roading infrastructure leading into New Brighton. The board has also prioritised the installation of new toilets and changing facilities closer to the hydrotherapy pool in Taiora QEII. This comes after concerns from users with accessibility issues who struggle with the 55-metre distance between the hydrotherapy pool and toilets and change facilities. The board is looking to secure a budget for the installation of additional toilets and fully accessible change facilities from the council’s Long Term Plan. Another priority listed by the board is to undertake planning for a new community-led facility within the Burwood Ward. The board is hoping to achieve this by developing a business case for the facility and secure funding for it within the council’s Long Term Plan. Supporting the transformation and activation of the red zone and a community action plan for Brooklands which will require a budget of $200,000 in the board’s eyes have also been cited as priorities.
