Asian
Star
Dr. Jag Anand
Asian Star - Dr. Jag Anand
Native Village/Country parent’s
background
I was born in Amritsar, India, the city that is
home to Sri Harmandir Sahib, known as the
Golden Temple. My maternal native village
is Jangli in the Gurdaspur district. My parents
came to Amritsar as refugees from Pakistan
when the partition of India occurred.
My father was born in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
My mother was born in Sargodha, Pakistan.
When I was growing up my father worked as
a Bank Manager and my mother was a home
maker.
Your Early Education
I finished my high school in Jalandhar,
Punjab. I did my Pre-medical from DAV
College, Jalandhar, Punjab. I did my medical
school from Government Medical College,
Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar,
Punjab, India.
When & Why You came to Canada
I first came to Canada in the late 80’s to do
my medical licensing exam. Canada
provided me one of the most accepting
multicultural societies in the world, and it
helped me super specialize in Medical and
Surgical Retina.
Your career advancement initiatives,
volunteer work and present occupation
After completing my medical degree, I
practiced family medicine in Australia. I then
decided to specialize in Ophthalmology. I
applied to and was accepted to the
Ophthalmology residency program at the
Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in
Melbourne and at the Sydney Eye Hospital
in Sydney. I was fortunate enough to be
awarded a scholarship from the Royal
Australian and New Zealand College of
Ophthalmologists to pursue my superspecialization
in Retina at the University of
Toronto.
After I completed my 5th year Ophthalmology
program in Melbourne, I decided to become
an Ophthalmic Surgeon, so I completed a
Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons
(FRCS) in Ophthalmology in Edinburgh,
Scotland. This allowed me to practice
ophthalmology in Great Britain.
Upon completing my FRCS I elected to
pursue a fellowship in Vitreo Retinal Surgery
and Medical Retina from the University of
Toronto and the University of British
Columbia (UBC).
During my fellowship at UBC in Vancouver,
received my FRCSC in ophthalmology from
the Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada. This designation allows
me to perform surgery in Canada.
I am currently working in Calgary and
attached to Rockyview General Hospital and
the University of Calgary as an
ophthalmologist and Retina surgeon. I also
have a Clinic in Northeast Calgary, serving
the people of Southern Alberta.
Over the last few years I have become very
active in politics, running in the last Federal
Election for the Liberal Party in the riding of
Forest Lawn. While I did not win the riding,
and the Liberals did not win a seat in Alberta,
I met thousands of constituents and had
many deep and meaningful conversations
about politics and life and it is for this reason
that I continue to be involved in politics.
The voters in Calgary talked to me about their
lives. They shared their challenges of living
in Canada. They highlighted their concerns
about issues such as education for their kids,
paying the bills, health care and crime.
I hope that one day I will have a chance to
work on all these issues for the people in
Calgary and all across Canada.
Your Regret in Life
In my early twenties I was actually offered an
opportunity to become a Bollywood movie
star. However, my parents wanted me to finish
my medical education before taking a chance
to pursue acting career. Being a good Punjabi
son, I agreed to finish my medical studies.
Who knows what might have been?
Pick Any One of Your Best Achievements
Looking back, I think my greatest
achievement was getting into the
ophthalmology residency in the Royal
Victorian Eye and Ear hospital in Melbourne,
Australia. It was incredibly difficult to get into
that program and was almost impossible as
a foreign medical graduate.
Were You Ever Discriminated?
Yes. While I was working in Australia, a patient
expressed that he wanted “a white fella” to
treat him instead of me. Even in Canada, I
have been asked by some patients
sarcastically”Where’s your cab?”.
I have many of these stories I could tell. Far
too many to remember. However, no matter
how awful these incidents can be, I always
try to remember a great
quote from a magical man.
“No one is born hating
another person because
of his skin, or his
background, or his
religion. People must
learn to hate, and if they
can learn to hate, they
can be taught to love, for
love comes more
naturally to the human
heart than its opposite.”
-Nelson Mandela
Are You Happy in
Canada?
Canada is a great country
and it has been extremely
good to me and my family.
It is a truly multicultural
country. We have a
guaranteed Charter of
Rights and Freedoms, and
the core Canadian values
of fairness, inclusion,
safety, diversity, and
Universal Health Care for
every Canadian.
Unfortunately, there are some who believe
Canada should abandon some of these core
principles. I completely disagree with that and
fully convinced to enhance and strengthen the
elements of society that make Canada what it
is.
Any Comments on Canada’s Culture
It is pragmatic, open to diversity and has a
sense of fairness, inclusion, safety and dignity
which are at the heart of this Nation. Canada
also has freedom of religion and expression
ingrained in our society which has made
Canada a very polite and tolerant nation.
Any Comments on Canada’s Weather
Canadian weather is associated with cold and
snow, but it is as varied as Canada’s people,
landscapes, and enormous skies.
What Brought You Success in Canada?
Perseverance, hard work, humility,
compassion and passion for my profession has
brought me success besides abundant
opportunities this country provide.
Are You Willing to Help New Immigrants and
How?
Lots of immigrants cannot do what they are
trained to do in their chosen profession and
end up doing odd jobs. Proper guidance for
professionals trained overseas is paramount
to integrate immigrants into Canada and to
allow them to contribute to Canadian Society
in their chosen profession. I also strongly
support family reunion programs which are
important for integration as family life is a
basic human right.
Your Message for Canadians of Asian
Origin
We all are very fortunate to be in Canada,
which is a great, open, free, inclusive and safe
democratic society that values human dignity.
Our responsibility is to contribute to Canadian
society and to uphold core Canadian values.
We should maintain our cultural identity, but
also be willing and open to change, and we
should appreciate our local community as
well as different ways of thinking about
cultural norms and values. We should respect
and uphold other people’s rights. Exercise
your voice through politics, local action and
involvement and avoid isolation. We are one,
but we are many. Social inclusion, social
justice and the importance of diversity should
not be forgotten.
Trudeau repeatedly found guilty
(Continued to page..1)
were internal discussions among the
campaign team about the wisdom of sending
him out to beg forgiveness. But the next day,
he emerged into the Old Market Square in
Winnipeg to pay penance. It proved a pivotal
moment in the campaign and within a few
days, “blackface” had fallen off the media’s
agenda
Are things likely to be different this time
around? Probably not.
New details will add oxygen to the fire. I
find it astonishing, bordering on
unbelievable, that the public service
volunteered the opinion that it could not
manage this nearly $1 billion program and
that it should be sub-contracted to the
private sector. If the prime minister’s
assertion on this matter proves to be less
than concordant with the facts, he will be in
much more trouble than he is right now.
But, absent incriminating new evidence,
the story is set to peter out as Canadians
head to the cottage.
Trudeau was asked whether he is
prepared to appear before a parliamentary
committee examining the issue and said with
a straight face that he will look at any
invitations. It’s possible he might appear as
improbable things happen all the time. But
this probably won’t.
The investigation by the ethics
commissioner may be more concerning for
the prime minister. Mario Dion may hand
down his latest report – Trudeau III – just as
the Liberals are planning a spring election.
Trudeau’s statement that he should have
recused himself is as good as an admission
that he breached section 21 of the Conflict
of Interest Act, that requires office holders
to step away from any discussion or decision
that would create a conflict.
The prime minister has weathered
scathing decisions by the ethics
commissioner twice in the past.
Enough Canadians have bought into his
explanation that his intentions were good
and that, in this case, he got carried away
by his enthusiasm for helping youth.
But having seen this movie before, to the
point where they can recite the script, some
caucus members are concerned.
“We’ve done a decent job rolling out
programs and getting money to businesses
and to people who need CERB. At the same
time, we’re going into our third election with
the same leader,” said one MP.
“With another ethics investigation, at
some point Canadians might get a little tired
and want to clean things up. It worries me.”
Another Liberal MP pronounced himself
“disgusted” but thought only a quarter or so
of his colleagues would be prepared to
express concern, never mind ask the “real
question” – who should take over? “I think
we could win the next election with the
deputy PM (Chrystia Freeland), if we go
early,” the MP said.
The deep slumber of decided opinion still
supports Trudeau. His approval rating has
slipped five points since the story broke,
according to the Angus Reid Institute. It is
still at 50 per cent, far above the 35 per cent
approval when he was re-elected last fall.
But how long can he maintain his
reputation as a straight shooter when he is
repeatedly found guilty of breaking the law?

coronavirus disease. The vaccine could be announced
as early as Thursday, the report further
said.
Biotech firm Moderna also sparked
optimism on Wednesday by saying initial tests
for its Covid-19 vaccine were a success.
Moderna said it will enter the final stage of
human trials for its Covid-19 vaccine on July
27.
More than 100 vaccines are being
developed and tested around the world to try
to stop the Covid-19 pandemic, which has
killed hundreds of thousands and ravaged the
global economy.

Editorial
The US steps up
against China
China has developed a reckless
track record, of antagonising country after
country, with little regard for consequences.
The only country China is wary
of acting against is the United States
(US). This is why Washington’s announcement
of measures against the
Chinese regime in the past few weeks is
noteworthy. The US formally announced
on Monday that it did not recognise
China’s claims on submerged shoals and
reefs in the South China Sea (SCS), diluting
Washington’s traditional stance of
remaining neutral in third party territorial
disputes. The US foreshadowed this by
its earlier statements blaming the Chinese
aggression for the situation in
Ladakh. Washington has also imposed
sanctions against individual Chinese officials
involved in its gulags for Uighur
minority members. It also took measures,
against China’s repressive moves in
Hong Kong. The US’ actions against
China on the economic front are equally
important. It is now expected that a bilateral
US-China agreement on accounting
standards will fall apart. This will result
in many Chinese firms being forced
out of US capital markets and stock exchanges,
a form of financial decoupling.
Superpowers on a collision
course is a recipe for global war, which
is why the US and China tend to pull their
punches against each other. The US preferred
to attack the Chinese claim on the
SCS on a legal point, namely that international
law does not allow countries to
stake territorial claims on the basis of
partially submerged reefs and rocks. It
avoided going after the genuine islands
that China has illegally captured. Nonetheless,
the US has laid the basis for
potentially more assertive warship movements
inside Chinese-claimed waters.
In the last 15 years, the world has
seen Washington blow hot and cold in
its responses to Beijing’s assertiveness.
Barack Obama’s administration was willing
to sacrifice strategic interests in return
for cooperation on issues such as
the climate crisis. President Donald
Trump has wobbled on the security side
when China seemed willing to grant trade
concessions. Now, the US is not interested
in safeguarding any element of its
relationship from the bitter strategic relations.
However, there should be no
doubt as to who is to blame for this —
Beijing. The international community has
been more than accommodative of
China’s aspirations. Over the past few
years, and especially the past few
months, it is evident Beijing sees its interests
best advanced by using its power
to instil fear rather than admiration.
