In the future, there will be
no markets waiting to emerge.
GDP will be countries we now call ‘emerging’*. But how will
this new world order stack up for your business?
At HSBC we understand emerging markets – 150 years ago
we were set up to facilitate trade between China and Europe.
Our Trade teams, on the ground in over 60 countries, can
help you navigate local markets while keeping your eye on
the bigger picture.
There’s a new world emerging.
His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah,
Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei
Darussalam, has been working
tirelessly for the well-being of his
subjects. Through the various plans
for progress that places emphasis
on education, healthcare, housing
and diversifi cation of local economy,
His Majesty developed the blueprint
for success for the country and
its people. A further contribution
towards upgrading the lives of
Bruneians arose in the form of
housing schemes. Housing assistance
are given to the needy and new
Muslim converts through the
National Housing Scheme that also
provides homes for landless citizens.
MUHIBAH
His Majesty’s compassion has brought comfort to many of his people. From
providing his people access to free medical health, education and housing,
and freeing his people of personal income tax, His Majesty exemplifi es the
true dedication of a charitable ruler.
Furthering His Majesty’s aim to develop the country and assist the
underprivileged, His Majesty initiated a charity foundation in his name,
the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation (Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah) in 1992, in an effort to facilitate the implementations of his and the
Royal Family’s charitable works. Funds from the foundation are channelled
to support socially benefi cial projects in fi ve different components, namely
education, welfare, religion, development and to fi nance higher education.
This includes providing fi nancial assistance to students furthering higher
religious education while the welfare arm provides assistance to eliminate
poverty in the country.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah
Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and
Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam,
witnessed the conversion to Islam in one
of the houses he visited after the handing
over of keys to new homeowners in Belait
District on 30 July, 2011.
The poor and underprivileged, in fact, hold a very
special place in His Majesty’s heart. To support
this particular group, His Majesty established
the ‘Document of Tithe Distribution Fund’ and
‘Document of Settlement of Outstanding Housing
Debt’ to help ease the lives of deserving subjects,
working towards a noble goal to eliminate poverty
in Brunei Darussalam.
His Majesty is also committed to the welfare of his
nation’s new Muslims. Through the Government’s
framework, new Muslims are provided free travels
to the holy city of Mecca to perform their Hajj
pilgrimage while other initiatives that provide
Islamic education to the converts emphasise on
bridging the gap between born-Muslims and
those new to Islam. Such programmes have been
an inspiration to so many other similar initiatives
overseas and refl ect His Majesty’s own faith and
values in propagating the religion.
Further charitable contribution arose in the form
of various housing scheme projects. Housing
assistance is given to the poor and new Muslim
converts through the National Housing Scheme
(NHS) and the Skim Tanah Kurnia Rakyat Jati
(STKRJ). In a ceremony to hand over the keys
under the NHS and STKRJ schemes for Kampung
Mumong and Lorong Tiga Seria in 1992, His
Majesty stressed that: “I believe that the quality
and level of welfare and livelihood of the rakyat
can be enhanced by the government housing
schemes. Therefore it is of importance and a
priority to me under the relevant Ministry.”
His Majesty’s aim is to encourage
the local youth to be dynamic
and responsible citizens, as the
immediate future of Brunei is
very much in their hands: “Our
youth is the sustainers of all
Government policies. Brunei
Darussalam needs youths who are
disciplined, resilient, independent,
responsible and loyal to the nation
and love their religion.” Through
His Majesty’s effort, the United
Nations Development Programme
has ranked Brunei Darussalam 30th
in the ‘High Human Development’
category, with Brunei Darussalam’s
literacy rate at 98 per cent – among
the highest in the world.
MUHIBAH
Philanthropy is ever one of His Majesty’s characteristics. In his
travels abroad, His Majesty often shows support for organisations
that refl ect issues he cares about. His Majesty understands that as
head of state, an important aspect of the work of a statesman is to
support and encourage public and voluntary charitable work. His
Majesty is all too aware of how easy it is for society to forget the less
fortunate, and to this end, continues to tirelessly champion various
charitable works and organisations, devoting his strength, wisdom,
time and fi nancial support for the development of the country and
assistance to the underprivileged.
15 July, 2012 marks His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan
Amal jariah disarankan setiap agama di dunia, termasuk Islam. Ia satu amalan
Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin

Meanwhile in London, an unprecedented programme of multilingual
The countries taking part include South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation
whose specially formed theatre company will present Cymbeline. The National
Theatre of China will perform Shakespeare’s Richard III in their fi rst visit to
the UK. Afghanistan’s theatre company Roy-e-Sabs will leave Kabul for the
Serbia, Albania and Macedonia.
Love’s Labour’s Lost will be performed in British Sign Language; Rawiri
Paratene’s New Zealand production of Troilus and Cressida will feature the
haka, waiata and other aspects of Maori culture, and there will be a showing
of Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s hip-hop version of Othello.
Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre will also be taking Hamlet on tour and
performing at outdoor UK regional venues, and in Spain and Austria. Using
a stage infl uenced by paintings and etchings from Shakespeare’s time, when
touring was prevalent, eight actors will perform a small-scale production of
the play, with Michael Benz as Hamlet and Carlyss Peer as Ophelia.
Oxford’s Bodelian Library Quad, Heddingham castle in Essex, Parham House in
West Sussex and Storr’s Hall Hotel in Bowness-On-Windermere in the English
Lake District.
But it’s not all shows and plays. In celebration of this landmark event,
the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, the independent charity that promotes
Shakespeare’s legacy across the world, and Galvin at Windows is holding
four special Shakespeare in the Sky evenings combining sumptuous
Shakespearean menus with live performances where guests will be seated
amongst the dramatic action of some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays.
Fred Sirieix, General Manager, Galvin at Windows, said, “The team at The
Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is helping us with the inspiration for these
exciting productions, which will provide diners with a unique take on Galvin
at Windows’ culinary experience. This is one of the most ambitious projects
we have planned and we are delighted to have the help of the charity which
is dedicated to Shakespeare’s legacy.”

The fi rst Shakespeare in the Sky was a Romeo and Juliet dinner held on
25 April, 2012 which commenced with the masked Venetian ball scene.
The romantic tragedy was played out between courses by actors from the
Shakespeare Birthplace Trust’s Shakespeare Aloud! troupe, who perform daily
at the Birthplace of the world’s most famous playwright in Stratford-upon–
Avon. This was followed with two smaller Shakespeare in the Sky dinners
hosted by the world’s foremost experts on Shakespeare’s works, life and times
on 21 May and 21 June. They featured readings by actors and Shakespearean
festivities. The fi nal Shakespeare feast and play Twelfth Night is planned for
26 September.
In preparation for the special live performances, the Galvin at Windows team,
led by Chris Galvin, owner/chef patron of Galvin Restaurants; Andre Garrett,
head chef; and Fred Sirieix, General Manager; headed to Stratford-upon-
Avon earlier this year to research and plan the Shakespearean menus and
entertainment. They visited Mary Arden’s Farm for an authentic taste of how
the Shakespeare family would dine, when William was a young man visiting
his grandparent’s home. The farm is a real working Tudor farmstead where
costumed staff and volunteers live, work and eat as in Tudor times. Diana
Owen, Director of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust said, “What better way
to celebrate the dizzying rise of Stratford’s local son to international icon than
with a Shakespearean feast in the restaurant with the most commanding
views of London during the height of the cultural Olympiad and the London
2012 Festival.”
With a glamorous interior evoking the golden age of the 1930’s, Michelinstarred
Galvin at Windows restaurant and bar has become one of the most
talked about destinations since opening in May 2006. Situated on the 28th
At a glance, Seoul seems crowded and
competitive, frenzied and unfriendly. Dig
a little deeper and you’ll fi nd a dynamic
city that succeeds at balancing the old with the new; providing endless
possibilities for great and surprising discoveries. Seoul is so wired and
vibrant that it’s not diffi cult to see why it has recently emerged as one
of the most visited cities in Asia.
Leave the tourist sights to experience a Seoul that will leave you
intrigued. A city of contrasts, you’ll not only encounter century-old
buildings shadowed by towering skyscrapers, but a lifestyle so full of
tradition existing alongside a new generation bursting with energy.
Yet it’s hard to imagine that only thirty years ago Seoul was destined to
be just like any other grim industrial town.
To really feel the vibe of the city, head direct to the shopping
areas. It may seem an odd suggestion, but it is exactly in places like
Namdaemun Market where you’ll see and feel the soul of Seoul. Peel
off the fi rst layer of this bustling 600-year-old market and a heady mix
of past and present unravels. This round-the-clock market is essentially
Seoul in a nutshell. Narrow alleys create a labyrinth of retail wonder,
where you’ll fi nd vendors selling everything from seaweed to ginseng,
medicinal herbs to mushrooms, including herbals teas and more. But,
there’s also the other side of the market that sells anything from
Vendors open at varying hours, but one thing you
can count on is the option to eat at any given
like mandu gook (savoury dumpling soup),
kimbap (steam rice rolled in seaweed) and bindae
to see the locals’ favourite hangout and you’ll
never go wrong.
Seoul’s edgy new culture scene is also worth
exploring. Nanta (Cookin’) is an embodiment of
Korea’s most sacred pastime, cooking, and its
emerging playfulness. It is also Seoul’s longestrunning
show and answer to Broadway, having
run for over a decade now. This theatrical, highoctane
pantomime succeeds in amusing audience
with its clever use of music derived from kitchen
utensils, martial arts and comedy in a skit that
takes place in, you guessed it – the kitchen. There
are lots of laughter and humour, and interactive
too, so watch out for fl ying food and more!
For somewhat of a gentler performance, the
Seoul Arts Center combines several theatres and
museums housed in a building that celebrates the
best of Korean architecture. Performances range
from classical music to Broadway-style musicals.
Those pressed for time can still catch various
events that are often provided free at the outdoor
Surprisingly, for a city that is fast-trekking to becoming a modern marvel,
Seoul is also a haven for nature. A city surrounded by mountains, Namsan
is at the centre of the megapolis, where locals often take to the hiking trails
on the weekends for a contemplative sojourn. Once at the peak – just 262
metres high – you can see just how fast Seoul is growing, with a great view
of its downtown. The scene is even more spectacular at twilight, when Seoul’s
skyscrapers and buildings light up. The foot trails that snake their way to the
top of the mountain provide a stunning landscape of seasonal fl owers. Cherry
blossoms and azaleas bloom in Spring, while the blazing and fi ery colours of
Autumn come alive when you hike here in September. The Namsan Botanical
Garden on the south side of the mountain is another place to view more of
Korea’s wild fl owers and beautiful pine trees. For a 360-degree view of the
city, drop by Seoul Tower at the peak of the mountain, where a revolving
restaurant provides a delightful place to unwind.
While a walk along Cheonggyecheon Stream may not provide a bird’s eye
view of Seoul, it is a place that offers a pleasant juxtaposition of the past
and future. This non-descript waterway that was once buried beneath an
expressway was revitalised in 2005 and today, provides a popular leisure
point for locals and visitors alike. With willow trees casting its haunting but
beautiful presence along the banks, small waterfalls and almost a dozen
Of course, how can one discover the essence
of Seoul without its food? There are many
restaurants that offer fusion Korean cuisine,
combining typical fare such as bulgogi (marinated
barbequed beef) with new age mashed potatoes
or tweaking the dotorimuk (acorn jelly) with
seasoned beef and salad. However, it is at Insadong
that one can really appreciate the blend of
east and west that helps Seoul embrace its future
without compromising its heritage. Insa-dong’s
many alleyways hide some of Seoul’s best kept
secrets. Specifi cally, teahouses run from a hanok,
traditional wooden houses with elegant curved
roofs and centuries of history.
Here is where enjoying tea and desserts is a
journey of the senses. At Sin Yetchatjip (Sin Old
Tea House), guests sit amid a luxurious garden
while munching gangjeong (sweet rice crackers)
and sipping insam tea (ginseng tea). Another
teahouse, called the Bird Flying Teashop, is a
quaint cafe with birds fl ying around the room
dimly lit by paper lanterns and surrounded by an
eclectic mix of antiques and curios. The whole
place seems surreal, and the tea is amazing.
Served in ceramic mugs, the tea variants range
form medicinal to herbal, where each brew sees a
colourful display of fl oating roots, fl owers, herbs,
leaves and seeds. Like the taste of the tea, it’s clear
that Seoul’s success is not so much in it reinventing
itself to impress, but re-telling its heritage through
a story that will stand the test of time.
into rekindling the romance between driving and driver.
The fi rst initial thought upon taking to the wheels was that driving
was certainly a pleasure. The luxurious comfort of space at the front
was undeniable, where driver also has seat height adjustment. Rear
passengers might fi nd the 5cm extra space up from 207’s model a bit
welcoming, but with the sloping roofl ine, adults are better off giving
up this space for kids. The story at the back was similar, with the boot
growing by 15 litres to 285 litres. The panoramic roof, ambient lighting
and tactile mix of metal and leather just add to the sophisticated fl air.
There’s also the tiny, go kart-style steering wheel to start conversation.
Some may fi nd it surprising, but this purpose-designed wheel was
to allow the instrument cluster to be in line with the natural fi eld of
vision. Peugeot believes this will entice 80
percent of the drivers to buy, saying the new
style design provides “ease of driving and
manoeuverabilty”.
Driving out of Cascais, the fi ve-speed manual
gearbox helps provide a punch to the 1.2L
engine. The 110kgs shaved off from the 207
for this new model made the 208 an easy
cruiser on Portugal’s highways. Once off road,
as the route took us through wild and craggy
mountains, winding roads, and highland
pastures, it was apparent that Peugeot’s
three cylinder engine was the right choice.
With 82bhp on hand, it gives 0-62mph in
12.2 seconds, 62.8mpg and 104g/km carbon
dioxide emissions. The 208 grips the road with
commendable dexterity and took to corners
with little or no body roll.
At the halfway point in Vila Verde dos
Francos, we changed vehicle to the 1.6l
VTi version. This time, the car attacked the
sinewy farm roads onwards to the twisty,
cobblestoned streets of Sintra with added
agility. Sintra, the UNESCO-proclaimed World
Heritage Site, is full of tight corners and spots,
which really put the 208’s tiny steering wheel
to the test. And it passed with fl ying colours.
The Peugeot 208 is the most stylish model
in the supermini class. It still comes with the
same trim varieties as other Peugeot models:
A fl oating grille, newly sculptured lights
and boomerang rear lamps. Eco-design is
another area in which the 208 had to prove
itself a pioneer. With the integration of 25
percent “green materials” out of the 170kg
of polymers (excluding rubber) present on the
vehicle (compared with 7 percent on the 207),
the 208 enters a new stage in terms of ecodesign.
In particular, it has an entirely recycled
rear bumper, which is a world fi rst for these
materials, until now used only for concealed
parts, as well as a radiator frame and fan
which are also entirely recycled.
Winding down the test drive back in
the fl atlands of Cascais, we rode to the
westernmost point of Portugal, the Cabo Da
Roca (Cape Roca). Against the backdrop of
the haunting lighthouse and end-of-the-world
cliffs, it was clear that with the 208, Peugeot
had successfully shaken off the ghost of its
predecessor to create a stylish, compact car
with innovative fl air perfect for city drivers.
LIFESTYLE IN PERSON
You are credited with launching
the Meurice Prize. How has the
experience impacted you both
professionally and personally?
Since 1835, artistic expression has been
essential to the art of living at Le Meurice,
where art coincides with a certain French
genius. Such luxury is of the kind that
gives full expression to creativity and
innovation. More than a celebration of
savoir-faire, it is a consecration of art at
its highest level. It was clear to me that
Le Meurice should give its support to the
emerging French art scene.
And so true to its heritage, in 2008 Le
Meurice launched this international Prize
to reassert its commitment to the arts
and provide material support each year,
as a non-profi t endeavour, to help an
artist working in France gain international
recognition. The Prize has an endowment
of €10,000 for the artist and €10,000 for
their gallery.
The Le Meurice Prize for contemporary
art is a powerful and pure experience
because it encompasses the very act
of creation. Every edition brings me
something new.
MUHIBAH
Apart from being associated with
arts, do you think Le Meurice would
ever champion other fi elds/causes?
Two years ago, to coincide with the Year
of Russia in France, we reinstated the
Meuriciades, originally hosted by Florence
Jay Gould in the 1950s, as a means of
promoting a different culture to our own.
These new Meuriciades on the theme of
Russian muses, with a text by Vladimir
Fedorovski, focused on young Russian
artists such as designer Liana Yaroslavsky,
fashion designer Vika Gazinskaya,
photographer Dimitri Tolstoï and DJ Vitaly
Kozak. Yannick Alleno imagined an all-
Russian cocktail reception which included
his interpretation of the salmon coulibiac
which was served every Friday at Le
Meurice in 1908 to please the hotel’s
Russian clientele.
Last year we trained the spotlight on
Brazil with the launch of the grand
Brazilian Festival, with the support of the
Brazilian Embassy. Joining in these two
weeks of celebration and creation were
Chef Samantha Aquim and her staff,
fashion designer Rosa Kanno, Gol de
Letra Foundation, set up by footballers
Rai and Leonardo, and the iconic
Havaianas brand.
The
Art
Of Living
Naturally, Le Meurice lends its support all
year round to charities and humanitarian
organisations such as Unicef, Emmaus,
Red Cross, les Blouses Roses, and Main
dans la Main.
As a palace hotel, we take sustainable
development to heart and implement
environmentally-aware practices.
In the years you’ve been with
Le Meurice, what is one aspect of
the hotel that never ceases to
amaze you?
Located in the heart of Paris, Le Meurice
is an endless source of inspiration for
anyone who enjoys the buzz of the
French capital. I still love the way Le
Meurice encapsulates French genius for
the art of living, from its public areas,
designed by Philippe Starck, to the rooms
which Charles Jouffre has decorated
in an 18th-century style, to Yannick
Alleno’s three-star cuisine. Le Meurice is
a unique, incredibly generous experience.
Everything is sumptuous and luminous.
No detail is overlooked, even the ones
too tiny to even be seen.

Anne Vogt-Bordure, Director
of Communications at Le
Meurice, speaks to Muhibah on
the hotel’s evolution and future.
Has working at Le Meurice made you
more particular about choosing a
hotel for yourself when you travel?
Le Meurice is more than a place of work.
It changes your vision of life. You’re
surrounded by history and everything this
implies. You’re in contact with people
who are driven by a passion. It becomes
part of you, and you become part of it.
You love what you do and you produce
what you love.
Choosing where you will stay is part of
travel and an escape in itself. Inevitably
though, I fi nd myself weighing up the
services other hotels provide, and no
matter how hard I try, I can’t help but
judge them.
A lot of hotels are turning to social
media, including Le Meurice. How
has this affect the communication
of the brand?
One shouldn’t underestimate the
importance of having a virtual presence.
It’s a fabulous way for us to cultivate
a special relationship with our guests,
whether they’re here in France or
thousands of miles away. It’s equally a
means of keeping our institutional clients
up-to-date with our news.
What about peer review
sites like tripadvisor – do you
welcome it? Do you think it is
useful for a luxury brand such
as Le Meurice?
All feedback is valuable because
we aim to provide discreet,
irreproachable, seamless service
at all times.
Paris has seen (and will be seeing)
a number of new Asian hotel players
being introduced. How does Le
Meurice view the new players and
how will this affect branding and
communication of your property?
The arrival of properties backed by Asian
and Middle Eastern investors will no
doubt bring a new set of Asian clientele
to the city’s palace hotels from which we
can benefi t.
We make constant improvements to
our product. This year, for example, we
will complete renovation of the fi rstfl
oor suites, where Dalí once had his
apartments. Before summer, we will be
launching our Table d’Yquem. Then in
September, the newly decorated Spa
Valmont for Le Meurice will open as a
haven of tranquillity.
What can guests look forward with Le
Meurice for the rest of 2012?
This year, Le Meurice celebrates three
fi ve-year anniversaries.
The fi fth anniversary of the three Michelin
stars with a menu that returns to Yannick
Alléno’s signature dishes.
The fi fth anniversary of the Le Dalí, with
a more personal look at the work of
Salvador Dalí through an exhibition, in
collaboration with the Pompidou Centre,
as of November.
The fi fth anniversary of the Le Meurice
Prize for contemporary art with a
calendar of exhibitions by each of
the fi nalists since the very fi rst Prize,
proposed to every guest.
All of which makes 3 x 5 reasons and
more to visit Le Meurice in 2012.
Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAG)
Various countries have implemented
restrictions on the carriage of liquids, aerosols
and gels in compliance with new guidelines set
by the International Civil Aviation Organization
(ICAO). Passengers transiting through airports
and carrying any liquids, pastes and gels
in containers over 100ml may be asked to
dispose of the items at security checkpoints.
These restrictions may affect your ability to
carry duty-free purchases onboard the aircraft.
Customers are advised to check with duty free
personnel before making their purchases. All
liquids, aerosols and gels must be carried in
containers of no greater than 100ml/3.3oz
capacity (approximately 100gm in weight)
and placed in a transparent, resealable plastic
bag. The plastic bag must be removed from
carry on baggage and presented to security
WELCOME ONBOARD
Abode of Peace
Brunei Darussalam is a country rich in culture and heritage.
It is a small, peaceful, prosperous kingdom on the northern
shore of the ecologically-rich island of Borneo. Come and
discover Brunei, a Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures.
Brunei is arguably best known today as an oil producing
country. The nation became independent in 1984 and,
thanks to its large reserves of oil and gas, now has one of the
highest standards of living in the world. Its population is just
over 370,000, made up of two-thirds ethnic Malay, with the
remainder being Chinese, Indian and other indigenous groups.
The Sultanate has four districts: Brunei-Muara (which includes
the capital Bandar Seri Begawan), Temburong, Tutong and
Belait. ‘Darussalam’, the Arabic word for ‘Abode of Peace’
describes Brunei’s Islamic history that dates back some 1,500
years. Today, Brunei remains the world’s only Malay Islamic
Monarchy with an unbroken royal lineage that has ruled the
nation for the past 600 years.
