On behalf of the organisers of the 2009 Brunei Darussalam International Defence
Exhibition and Conference (BRIDEX), I would like to welcome you to this second edition
of our BRIDEX newsletter. With only less than three months to the opening of BRIDEX,
which will be held in Brunei from 12-15 August, and we have made significant progress
in our preparations for the region’s premier defence and security event.
As you will see in the adjoining article, our brand new, purpose-built exhibition centre
at Jerudong is well on target to be completed in June. This splendid facility will offer
exhibitors and delegates state-of-the art facilities and accommodation, including
10,000 sq m of modern exhibition space and accompanying 5,000 sq m of apron
space for static displays. Our intention is to create the most comfortable and convenient
environment for exhibitors and delegates to engage with each other and build profitable
new relationships.
We have been very pleased with the response to BRIDEX from leading manufacturers
and suppliers around the world, and from the many decision-makers from some 60
countries who will attend BRIDEX. The profile of the senior military officers attending
the event has also been enhanced with confirmation that the 6th ASEAN Air Chief’s
Conference will take place during BRIDEX, the first time that we in Brunei have had the
pleasure of hosting this prestigious gathering.
Our new delegate management system has been introduced to ensure that these VIP
guests can engage with as many of the exhibitors as possible, within their specific areas
of interest. This is part of our commitment to maximize the value to exhibitors and
delegates alike, and to deliver on our promise to make BRIDEX the region’s premier

Construction of the new purpose-built
exhibition centre which will host the
2009 Brunei Darussalam International
Defence Exhibition and Conference (BRIDEX) is now well
under way and on target to be completed in June, two months
ahead of the opening of BRIDEX.
The new exhibition centre, which is located on a prime oceanfront
site near Brunei’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, will
offer exhibitors and delegates state-of-the art facilities and
accommodation during BRIDEX, which is the region’s premier
defence and security event. The venue features a fully airconditioned
10,000 sq m exhibition hall, with 5,000 sq m of
adjoining apron space for static displays. There will also be a
mobility park and marina for live demonstrations of equipment
and systems; chalets, restaurant and hospitality facilities.
BRIDEX will be held from 12 - 15 August 2009 and will
showcase innovative and value-enhancing technology
solutions which address the security challenges facing defence
forces across Asia, and further afield. Focused exclusively on
the most senior government and defence policymakers, the
event is expected to draw around 250 exhibitors, representing
the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of defence
and security systems.
The design of the new exhibition centre ensures that exhibitors
will have easy access during the build and breakdown period
immediately before and after BRIDEX. The column-free main
hall has 3m/9.84ft clear headroom throughout and the
exhibition floor has been designed to support heavy military
vehicles. Exhibitors with demanding IT requirements can

BRIDEX EXHIBITORS TO BENEFIT FROM NEW EVENT & DELEGATE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Exhibitors of BRIDEX 2009 can be assured of meeting large
numbers of influential decision-makers during the premier
defence & security exhibition held in August, thanks to the Event
& Delegate Management System (EDMS). Launched in March,
the EDMS provides integrated and seamless facilitation of all
delegate needs and requirements during the premier event.
Through this system, exhibitors can arrange for valuable facetime
with important VIPs and decision makers.
With more than 400 hosted VIPs from over 60 countries expected
to attend BRIDEX in August, the EDMS will ensure efficient
scheduling of events and networking meetings for exhibitors
to gain the most mileage out of BRIDEX. Attending VIPs this
year include Ministers/Deputy Ministers of Defence, Chiefs of
Defence Forces, Police Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries
and Heads of Procurement. Lt Col (Rtd) Amir Hamzah bin Haji
Hanafi, Chief Executive of the event organiser, Royal Brunei
Technical Services, said: “It is critical that these high-level
participants are able to maximise the value of their attendance
at BRIDEX. At the same time, it is very important for exhibitors to
have the opportunity to meet and engage with the over 400 key
decision-makers hosted by the Ministry of Defence. This new
event and delegate management will ensure that all needs are
met in the most efficient manner.”

EXHIBITORS’ REGISTRATIONS ON-TARGET
Major defence companies from around the world have
confirmed their participation in the Brunei Darussalam
International Defence Exhibition (BRIDEX) 2009 in recent
weeks, with registrations well on target to reach the expected
total of more than 250 exhibitors.
Exhibitors already confirmed for BRIDEX 2009 include
manufacturers and suppliers of defence and security systems
and equipment from countries as far apart as Bulgaria,
Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia,
Pakistan, Singapore, Turkey, UK and USA. BRIDEX is the
region’s premier defence and security event and will showcase
the latest innovative and value-enhancing technology
solutions which address the wide spectrum of challenges
facing defence forces.

The last BRIDEX in 2007 saw the
participation of 108 companies, with
more than 60 international delegates
from 17 countries. More than 11,000
visitors attended the three-day event,
establishing a base which will be
exceeded during BRIDEX 2009.
6th ASEAN AIR CHIEFS CONFERENCE (6th AACC)
Senior Air Force officers from across the region will meet
in Brunei during the 2009 Brunei Darussalam International
Defence Exhibition (BRIDEX), when the 6th ASEAN Air Chiefs
Conference (AACC) takes place alongside the region’s
premier defence and security event.
This will be the first time the Sultanate will host the annual
conference since its inception in Thailand in 2004, and
further enhances the delegate profile for BRIDEX, which
includes defence force chiefs and decision-makers from
across Asia and further afield. The AACC is an important
platform that enhances peace and stability in the region,
promoting greater integration and partnership among the
Air Forces of the Association of South East Asian Nations
(ASEAN).
The theme of the 6th AACC is ‘Non-traditional Security
Threats’ and will be chaired by the Commander of the Royal
Brunei Air Force, Brigadier General (U) Dato Paduka Hj
Mahmud bin Hj Saidin (Comd TUDB). Non-traditional security
threats include national and cross-border issues including
natural disasters, people-smuggling, drug trafficking, piracy,
the illegal arms trade and terrorism.
The 6th AACC will be attended by the Air Chiefs of ASEAN
nations and other senior air force officers, and will address
the application of air power in combating terrorism as well
as its role in addressing other non-traditional threats. The
possible implementation of a ‘5-year Action Programme for
ASEAN Air Forces’ will also be discussed and a draft of the
‘Declaration of Support by ASEAN Air Forces in addressing
Non-traditional Security Threats’ will be tabled.
Visiting Air Chiefs and senior officers will meet with the
Deputy Minister of Defence and the Commander of the
Royal Brunei Armed Forces. They will also be invited to the
BRIDEX Opening Ceremony and the BRIDEX Reception and
International Night held during the exhibition. In addition,
senior Air Force staff will receive the chance to meet their
counterparts from regional land and naval forces.
Partners of the visiting Air Chiefs are also invited to take
part in the cultural visit programme, which includes visits to
sites of cultural significance such as the Jame Asr’ Hassanil
Bolkiah Mosque, the Royal Regalia Museum and the Brunei
Museum.

THE ROYAL BRUNEI ARMED FORCES’
DEVELOPMENT PLAN
The complexity of security and operational
challenges have emphasised the importance
for a joint force approach to operations, which
requires interoperability not only within the
RBAF, but also between the RBAF and other
government agencies. Thus, for the purpose
of creating effective Command and Control
throughout the organisation, the RBAF has
established its Joint Force Headquarters in
early 2008, which is to be equipped with
a new Combat Net Radio system and a
C4I system, currently at the implementation
and procurement stages respectively. These
capabilities are also expected to provide the
RBAF connectivity and interoperability with its
foreign counterparts, thereby enabling Brunei
Darussalam to participate in any cooperative
operations in the international theatre.
The Royal Brunei Land Force (RBLF) has been
focusing on acquiring a comprehensive suite of
equipment to maximise the flexibility, mobility
and effectiveness of its operations. Among
others, these include enhancing its weaponry,
replacing its mobility assets, acquiring gapcrossing
bridges, tactical communications
and immediate area day-night surveillance. In
tandem with these capability enhancements,
the RBLF is also currently planning to create
a mechanised infantry battalion, a second
engineer squadron and a reconnaissance
platoon.

TREASURES OF BRUNEI
Delegates and exhibitors to the 2009 Brunei Darussalam
International Defence Exhibition (BRIDEX) are encouraged to take
a little extra time to explore the treasures of Brunei, which houses
vast areas of pristine rainforests, unspoiled coral reefs, mangrovecovered
islands, white sandy beaches and accessible nature
reserves.
As one of the last few remaining bastions of natural beauty in the
world, Brunei is an ideal setting for the eco-tourism enthusiast
or any tourist seeking to experience the grandeur of nature in its
purest. Moreover, with rainforests sprawling over 70% of Brunei’s
land, eco-tourism opportunities are often within easy reach of the
capital, allowing one to enjoy both the comforts of the city as well
as its luscious nature.
In Brunei, visitors can walk through the rainforests and take a
look at the many varieties of tropical animals that reside within. In
particular, the Bruneian nature provides home to the rare Bornean
Proboscis Monkey. Characterised by the elongated and pendulous
nose that gives the primate its name, the Proboscis Monkey is an
endangered species whose last remaining safe haven is in Brunei.
There are less than 18,000 Proboscis Monkeys left in the wild,
more than half of which live in the Sultanate’s unspoiled tropical
wilderness areas.
A main attraction for nature lovers would be the Ulu Temburong National Park, sitting on the eastern most part of Brunei,
and separated from the capital by the state of Sarawak. The best way to get there would be to take a relaxing longboat ride,
allowing visitors to get a glimpse of the mangrove forests outlining the winding jungle river, making the journey much of an
adventure in itself.
A walk through the Ulu Temburong National Park will be just as unique, with its serene, unspoiled natural beauty. The canopy
walkway, 50 metres from the floor, in Ulu Temburong provides a relatively easy passageway above the rough terrain and also
exposes epic bird-eye views of the rainforest’s roof and an abundance of birds, plants, micro fauna and mammals. With few
tourists around, nature lovers can appreciate having the untouched paradise all to themselves, and explore it at their own
pace. Visitors also have the option of making this a day-trip and travel back to the capital after, or find lodging in the simple
chalets or bunkrooms nearby.

THE ROYAL BRUNEI ARMED FORCES’ DEVELOPMENT PLAN
In defending and preserving the nation’s
maritime interests, safety and security,
the Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) is looking
at acquiring patrol vessels and fast patrol
boats to replace its current assets. These
new vessels not only would provide the
capability for the RBN to sustain maritime
presence in the Exclusive Economic
Zone (EEZ), but would further contribute
towards the nation’s ability to cooperate
with its neighbours beyond the nation’s
EEZ, both in combating transnational
security challenges and conducting
humanitarian relief operations.
Complementing the maritime surveillance
capabilities, the Royal Brunei Air Force
(RBAirF) is also looking at expanding
its current aerial surveillance envelope
through the acquisition of additional
maritime patrol and fixed wing transport
aircrafts. In addition to these, in the
medium and long term, plans are being
drawn up to acquire UAV capability and
to replace older helicopters to ensure the
RBAirF’s overall operational effectiveness.
In addition, the Ministry of Defence is also
looking at privatising some of its work
and outsource some of its needs, such
as cook houses, small arms simulator
and vehicles servicing and repairs.

outside the country. Consultancy work
is another area which the Ministry
will continue to require in many of its
major projects.

Exhibitors at BRIDEX 2009 will have the opportunity to enjoy a special complimentary tour of
Brunei Darussalam during show days.
Tour participants will first visit the Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, which was built in 1988
and officially launched in 1994 to commemorate the silver jubilee of His Majesty SultanHaji
Hassanal Bolkiah’s reign. Known for its style and grandeur, the mosque is famed for its
seablueroof, shimmering golden domes and slender minarets that tower into the sky.
