Work on the $2m facility is expected to start in November and will replace the old earthquake damaged clubrooms in Halswell Domain. Said club committee member Colin Fenwick: “We started this process 10 years ago, so we can’t wait – we’re all looking forward Colin Fenwick to it. “We reckon we’ll have one of the best rugby league facilities in the South Island, potentially even in New Zealand.” The previous clubrooms, which were 40-years-old, were deemed unsafe to occupy, which Mr Fenwick said was “not worthwhile” to bring them up to standard because the repairs would have cost more than the construction of a new building. The building will replace the earthquake-damaged building below. a resource consent. Securing funding had been an issue over the years, but they now have money from insurance claims which took eight years to organise, as well as funding from the lotteries commission. “We consider ourselves in a fortunate situation to be able to provide a service for a lot of people, 365 days a year,” said Mr Fenwick. Once construction begins, the clubrooms will take approximately nine months to complete, which will be located on-site at the Halswell Domain. That joy quickly turned sour when a raft of complications arose, causing the loss of one of her babies during early pregnancy, with the other two babies born prematurely at 24 weeks. The twins were “fighting for their lives” following an emergency Caesarean, but weighing in at 345gm, baby Ace did not survive. Andre clung to life weighing 890gm, undergoing serious operations to keep him alive, but he developed PVL while in the neonatal intensive care unit which caused brain damage, and was also born with chronic lung disease and epilepsy. “It’s horrible watching him suffer,” she said.
