RSL YOUTH AWARDS 

Winners are Grinners

I attended the first general meeting 

and luncheon for the year of the 

Hornsby RSL Sub Branch (SB) held 

at the Hornsby RSL Club Ltd on 

Sunday 26 February 2012. I had 

not visited a meeting of my Sub 

Branch for some time and so it was 

good to meet up with some familiar 

faces of serving and ex service 

Defence Force personnel. 

One of the first for me to meet was 

Norm Oliver of Asquith who was 

the RSL Sub Branch President 

when I was a Vice President back 

in the late 1980s - early 1990s. 

I was honoured to be seated at 

the VIP table with current Sub 

Branch President Rod White of 

Turramurra, SB Vice Pres Ray 

Davis of Waitara, and one of the 

special guests Colin Bourke of 

Hornsby, President of the Hornsby 

RSL Club Ltd. 

“The two storey $7.8 million 

approx extension to the RSL 

Club is on track and is expected 

to be completed in October this 

year weather permitting,” said 

President Colin in his address to 

the gathering. 

Among those who attended the 

luncheon meeting was a table of 

former South Korean veterans 

including some from the Vietnam 

War (1955 – 1975). 

The occasion also saw the 

presentation of awards to our local 

youth by Sub Branch President Rod 

White. 

Sergeant Marshall Howes (16) of 

Thornleigh, from the Australian Air 

League Hornsby RSL Sub Branch 

Squadron 44 UlmWing, was the 

recipient of the Hornsby RSL SB Air 

League sword. 

His brother Leading Cadet Liam

Heights, President Hornsby RSL 

SB Youth Club. Kerry is a recipient 

of the National RSL highest civilian 

award, the Certificate of Merit, for 

her 40 years of service with the RSL 

SB Youth Club. 

The Regimental Sergeant Major 

‘Pace Stick’ Award was presented 

to Cadet Warrant Officer Class 

1 Bahaven Jeyaratnam (17) of 

Girraween for services to the 22nd 

Australian Army Cadet Battalion. 

The Regional Army Cadet Unit 226 

based at Normanhurst Boys High is 

a sub unit of the 22nd Battalion. 

Bahaven attended James Ruse 

Agricultural High at Carlingford and 

this year commences studies in 

medicine at the University of NSW.

Tools stolen from utes parked in Berowra Heights: 

Unknown person/s stole tools and plumbing fittings from two different 

utes parked outside their owners’ homes in Warrina Street and Warruga 

Crescent Berowra Heights. This took place between 7pm on Saturday 

3rd and 9am on Sunday 4 th March. Also stolen were a number of 

fuel containers. One of the utes had an attached trailer with two fuel 

containers full of diesel fuel. These were also stolen. The total value is 

estimated at $9,000. 

Vandalism at Guides’ Hut: 

Anyone with knowledge of who 

has smashed the barbecue at 

the Berowra Girl Guides Hut 

should contact Hornsby Police.

who may have information 

relating to the above incident to

Celebrates INTERNATIONAL 

WOMEN’S DAY 

Eight members from Berowra Waters VIEW Club attended an International 

Women’s Day Luncheon held at NSW Parliament House, on Monday 5th 

March. 

The guest speakers were the NSW Minister for Women, The Hon. Pru 

Goward MP, and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, The Hon. 

Shelley Hancock MP. Both speakers highlighted the achievements 

of women in society and the need for more educational and workplace 

opportunities for girls and women in the future. 

VIEW Clubs of Australia work in partnership with The Smith Family charity 

to provide educational support to children from disadvantaged Australian 

families, through the Learning for Life programs, and currently sponsor 

950 students with the aim of encouraging them to reach their potential by 

gaining a good education. 

Berowra Waters VIEW Club meets for lunch at Asquith Golf Club at 11am 

on the 4th Wednesday each month. We have a guest speaker and visitors

Are you charging 

your tenants water 

usage and are you 

compliant? 

Part of the new tenancy laws and 

regulations that came into effect on 

31 January 2011 is the requirement 

that the rental property must 

comply with the water efficiency 

guidelines at the commencement of 

a new lease before the owner can 

charge the tenant for excess water 

usage. Furthermore, all landlords 

have been given a 12 months grace 

period to comply with this regulation 

whether or not a new lease has 

been entered into. 

If you are currently charging your 

tenant for water usage, to continue 

to do so you will need to arrange for 

a certified plumber to inspect your 

rental property and check to ensure 

that the internal cold water taps 

have a flow rate of less than 9 litres 

per minute and that the property 

has no leaking taps. 

Most newer properties should 

not require any tap ware upgrade 

however most older properties will 

require retrofitting water restrictors 

or tap ware upgrades. The cost to 

upgrade should only be a one off 

cost. 

Please keep in mind that each time 

a new lease is entered into that we 

recommend that a water efficiency 

compliance certificate be obtained.

To ensure compliance with the 

new regulations, a water efficiency 

compliance audit is applicable for 

all rental properties to ensure that

Under the new regulation The 

Department of Fair Trading 

NSW has released the following 

information to landlords: 

Landlords can pass on water 

usage charges to tenants 

provided all the following 

minimum criteria have been met: 

· the rental premises must be 

individually metered (or water 

is delivered by vehicle, such as 

those with water tanks on rural 

properties) and 

· the charges must not exceed 

the amount billed for water usage 

by the water supplier and 

· the rental premises must 

meet required ‘water efficiency’ 

standards. 

A rental property is considered 

water efficient if it meets these 

standards:

I have been walking my dogs along Turner & 

Berowra Waters Roads for well over 10 years. 

I was, and still am, very upset and cranky when I 

saw the notice board at Berowra Public School. 

It reads at the bottom “Happy Holidays”. 

What is so wrong with putting “Merry 

Christmas”?

Dear BT, 

Though far from being a ‘Bible basher’, when 

considering a school for my young son I have 

decided to send him to a ‘church school’ rather 

than a state government run school. Why? I 

went to State schools, as did my husband and 

everyone in our family. But now with the ‘new 

rules’ of political correctness gone mad, a church 

school it will be for our son. 

Even though we are not church-goers, nor was 

I when I attended school many years ago, I still 

went to school Scripture classes as well church 

services associated with Christmas, Easter and 

Anzac day. It was here that I learnt the Lord’s 

Prayer and some hymns and carols which I 

remember to this day. But now I understand 

that the trend is for this to no longer be taught 

in state schools but to be replaced with ‘ethics 

class’. What’s wrong with good old fashioned 

Christian values ... Do unto others etc?? 

I want my son to know what is right and what 

is wrong, not what suits the Government so we 

don’t tread on anyone’s toes! I am an immigrant, 

but I accept the rules and culture of the country 

that I have adopted ... Australia. And it is the 

Christian-based values I want my son to learn, 

not watered down ‘ethics’ to appease some 

minority groups. Am I Robinson Crusoe here??? e?? ?? ?

Last week my 75 year old mother 

was approached outside our 

Berowra Heights home by a tall 

young man carrying an umbrella 

who asked if the house was hers. 

She replied ‘yes’ as she lives there. 

He then said he was with the 

Neighbourhood Watch and they 

were painting numbers on the 

outside of the driveways and that 

she had to get it done. He told her 

it would cost $20.00. When she 

said that he’d have to come back 

and speak to her son-in-law (my 

husband), the man got angry and 

started shouting at her. 

She said, “You’d better be careful 

acting like that; I might call the 

police!” 

And he replied, “I need to be 

careful? You should be careful! I 

know where you live!” 

She called me to find out the phone 

number of the police so that she 

could report him. 

Can you please consider running a 

letter to warn other residents of this 

deceitful act and so that they are 

forewarned about these conmen 

roaming the area?

in any coffee lounge or club. It is 

a real pity they had to close this 

beautiful, comfortable and well 

located building simply because 

the council wants to pull it down 

to open an unnecessary road. I 

am very glad to read now that the 

building will be preserved during 

construction of the Aquatic Centre. 

The loop road proposed by Mark 

Cambourn is one obvious solution, 

but not the only one. 

There is an obvious access route 

to the new swimming pool that 

does not require the CWA building’s 

demolition nor the uprooting of 

any trees and can’t understand 

how it is possible it hadn’t been 

considered; it just required some 

lateral thinking. It is access through 

a vacant block of land located on 

Dural Street, between the Hornsby 

Chinese Seafood Restaurant and 

the Montessori Pre-School. 

I sincerely hope this letter will be 

published as it is for the benefit 

of the whole community that the 

best options are all considered 

and properly examined before any 

irreparable damage is done to the 

CWA or to the adjacent park.

in 1969 with the equivalent of a 

master degree here, specialising

Clean Up Day 2012 

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY 

AT PENNANT HILLS PARK 

Philip Ruddock MP helped eager volunteers clean up Pennant Hills Park on 

Clean Up Australia Day 2012, on Sunday 4 March. 

“It was a great opportunity to get out and about, meet some volunteers, 

and help keep our local area tidy,” said Mr Ruddock, Federal Member for 

Berowra. 

“The turnout of volunteers across Berowra was heartening to see – and 

thankfully the rain held off!” 

He especially congratulated Brian Peacock who once again did such a 

great job in co-ordinating teams. 

However, Clean Up Australia Day is about more than just one day. 

“Local groups conducting clean ups at any time can get support by 

registering at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/register ,” said Mr Ruddock, 

“which is a great opportunity to keep areas clean all year round.”

Matt Kean Joins Hornsby North Public 

School for Clean Up Australia 

Hornsby North Public School was looking especially tidy at the end of 

Friday the 2nd of March, as the students and teachers got their gardening 

gloves on and joined in the annual Clean Up Australia Day. 

Despite the rain coming down, the students were encouraged by the 

visit of local MP Matt Kean. Matt commented on how important it was for 

students to play a role in looking after their beautiful bush surroundings 

and recognize the importance of the natural environment. 

All classes, under the supervision of their teachers, looked after a section 

of the playground, including the school veggie patch. 

“The purpose of cleaning up is to educate the children on the value of 

caring for the environment and we aim to encourage the children to 

participate with their parents and the community in Clean Up Australia day 

on Sunday,” said Principal Maree Sumpton.

Among the rubbish was a good bike … minus wheels, a large suitcase, a 

dog kennel and a large advertising banner PHOTO ABOVE!!! 

We did note that the rubbish is becoming a little less over the years, so 

maybe Berowra commuters 

are getting ‘tidier’. We were 

particularly grateful to the

THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL ...story by Melanie Charlton 

The first day of school is an emotional time for many parents, often leaving them with an 

‘empty-nest’ feeling. It is, however, the beginning of many marvellous new experiences 

through childhood and in to those teenage years. Here, is one Mum’s experience of the first 

day of school. 

5:30am: “Mummy, Mummy! We are going to big school today?” exclaimed Genevieve as she 

excitedly shook me awake. Standing before my sleepy eyes stood my twin girls, Morgan and 

Genevieve; already dressed in their new school uniforms. I had to chuckle as I relented my 

sleep to the excitement of the day. 

9:20am: The twins sheepishly entered their new classroom with nervous trepidation. 

“Good morning Morgan and Genevieve. How are you today?” asked their new teacher, Mrs Fenton. 

She was an attractive young woman who exuded warmth and compassion … the epitome of a kindy teacher. 

The twins beamed with pride as they stood next to Mrs Fenton for the requisite ‘first day of school’ photo 

opportunity. 

The classroom was a hive of excitement with both children and parents buzzing with pride. Little people swarmed 

everywhere; hanging their school bags and hats on their very own named hooks. Girls drowned in the lengthy 

material of their oversized school dresses while boys were overshadowed by their sock mileage. 

“What an exciting day! Just think, we get to do it all over again tomorrow!” I exclaimed.

BUGS A HIT 

AT ST BERNARDS 

Local Ukelele group BUGS are pleased to announce 

that St Bernard’s Catholic School has finished their f 

ive-week ukulele programme on Thursday 1st March. 

All children in years 4, 5 and 6 participated in five 

lessons, a total of two and a half hours altogether 

and they can all play several chords and have a large 

repertoire of songs, including You Are My Sunshine, See 

You Later Alligator, the Hokey Pokey and many more. 

The Hornsby BUGS were very proud to watch the Year 

6 students perform for the whole school, including 

teachers and parents at assembly on Friday 2nd March. 

The BUGS have continued their fundraising activities 

and have just ordered the next 25 ukuleles in the 

programme which will be used for students at Asquith 

Girls’ High School.

I almost made it! I 

was just 250m away 

from the front gate but the council 

barriers and the men in fluoro safety 

vests just wouldn’t let me pass! 

Last week I joined the ranks of 

thousands of people who were 

unable to reach their goal of getting 

somewhere they needed to be 

because of the rain…well not just 

rain…because of rivers of water 

which had broken their banks and 

inundated many of the major roads 

around Sydney. 

For me, I was headed to my Army 

Base and I was stopped 250m short 

of the front gate because of water 

on the road. It was the only way into 

the base that I knew and I couldn’t 

seem to get any information about 

the existence or location of a ‘back 

gate’. 

So I took matters into my own hands 

and tried to work out where this 

back gate would be. I drove in the 

general direction and found myself 

on an almost never ending road of 

roundabouts, twists and turns and 

finally (after about 15 min) arrived 

back at the same road block I had 

started with! 

Then I saw a ‘Unimog’ – an Army 

Transport truck just leaving the 

roadblock…they would know for 

sure where the back gate was! 

So I followed them through a series 

of different twists and turns for about 

10 minutes and I was feeling pretty 

confident but then the truck pulled 

up at the local shopping mall and 

the driver got out to buy himself a 

coffee! 

At this point I was out of ideas when 

I saw another Officer get into his 

car and drive off down the road. I 

followed him and this time he knew 

where he was going and in a few 

short kms I was checking in at the 

back gate! 

It struck me how easily an obstacle 

can change a normal day into 

a challenge. My challenge was 

nothing in comparison to people 

whose homes were inundated or 

whose cars were submerged. But it 

made me think again about what 

we rely upon and where our true 

foundation lies…

PROSTATE CANCER 

SCREENING 

Yields Hopeful Results 

Former Member for Robertson and Prostate cancer survivor Jim 

Lloyd of Mooney Mooney welcomes the results of an extensive 

study into the benefits of screening for prostate cancer. 

“In February this year in Paris, the European Randomised Study of 

Screening for Prostate Cancer (ERSPC) released the analysis of 11 years 

of follow up; two years more than previously,” Mr Lloyd said. 

The ERSPC, which commenced in the 1990s and involves around 

162,000 men from eight countries, reported a 21% fall in prostate 

cancer deaths in men screened using the PSA test. “Importantly, the 

prostate cancer mortality difference between men who were screened 

and men who weren’t became wider the longer they were followed up 

after screening began,” Mr Lloyd said. 

“These results add weight to previous results that showed a fall in 

prostate cancer mortality in men tested for prostate cancer,” says the 

Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand’s spokesperson on 

prostate cancer, Associate Professor Mark Frydenberg. “Around 20,000 

Australian men are diagnosed with, and 3,300 men die from prostate 

cancer every year.” 

“Currently men and their treating GPs receive differing opinions about 

the value of the PSA testing, many doctors, including prostate cancer 

specialists are also concerned about the extent of treatment for prostate 

cancer and the side effects that can follow it. It would be timely to 

take stock now, with this new evidence, bring all relevant information 

together, and decide how our community can best control prostate 

cancer,” Mr Lloyd said 

As a member of the NSW Prostate Cancer advisory committee Mr Lloyd 

continued, “It is time to end the confusion around PSA testing.” 

It is now 10 years since Wayne Swan and Jim Lloyd sponsored a Private 

Members’ Motion in Federal Parliament in support of PSA testing and 

this study supports their views on PSA testing.

What is Wing Chun? 

Wing Chun (“everlasting springtime”) is a logical,

in the NSW RFS 

NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) Commissioner Shane 

Fitzsimmons said that International Women’s Day is a reminder 

to celebrate the growing number of women in various roles 

across our emergency services. 

NSW RFS has one of the highest percentages of women of Australian 

emergency services. 

“Women have for a long time played a critical role in the NSW RFS 

and you only need to look at the current flood emergency to see the 

importance of their work,” Commissioner Fitzsimmons said. 

“International Women’s Day is an opportunity to recognise the 

roles women fulfil, from firefighting and leadership to training and 

communications. 

“Our female members come from all backgrounds and circumstances. 

They live on the coast, in the city, and in remote outback areas,” said 

Shane. “Some are students, some are in the workforce, others are 

retired – but what they all have in common is a dedication to their role 

and their commitment to serving their communities.”

the publication ‘Making a Difference: Women in the NSW Rural

Our 2012 season is now well under way and we will soon be ending the 

qualifying period for our annual club championships. For those members who

completed before the end of July. Morisset Golf Club hosted our last event on 

the 4th March with an unusually fine and sunny start. The course was in fine 

condition, but wet underfoot, and scoring brought a smile to the face of the 

handicapper. Winners on the day were:

TEN RED ROSES 

It was the 13th February 2012, the day before Valentine’s Day when 

flowers were at their most expensive. 

I had been unwell for a few weeks, being in hospital twice and was now going 

to see my GP for a follow up visit after coming out of hospital. 

When I came out of the doctor’s surgery in Berowra, I rang a friend whom I 

hadn’t seen for a while to see if she wanted to catch up for a cup of coffee, 

which we did. 

We had just about finished out time together when a lady walked into the 

coffee shop and put a beautifully made-up box of 10 red roses on the table in 

front of me. 

The lady said, “These are a gift from God for you.” 

When I asked her ‘why?’, the lady said, 

“I was walking past the florist shop and 

stopped to look at this box of roses.” 

“The Good Lord said to me, ‘you have to 

buy those roses and give them to the first lady 

you see, because she needs them’,” she explained 

and I was the lucky recipient. This lady 

could have had no idea of the traumas 

I had just been through. However she 

did sit down and have a drink of 

orange juice with us – I did thank her 

again and then she was gone. 

Our God is an awesome God; 

he allows the beautiful to happen 

in amongst the not so beautiful.

(CHRV) Milan Telford (pictured) spoke to the National Seniors 

(Hornsby Branch) on the Village’s proposed future development plans. 

There were over 50 senior citizens in attendance. 

The Village which currently has 23 Independent Living Units (ILUs) and a 

Hostel with 24 rooms, is planning to expand the number of ILUs by 24 units 

in the next two years, at the properties it owns along Mildred Avenue Hornsby. 

The demand for units at CHRV over the last few years has resulted in a large 

waiting list and the development is seen as part of meeting the needs of the 

local Community. Throughout 2011, a Planning Committee had met to consult 

with residents and industry on the ‘way forward’ resulting in an Architect Brief 

document. 

The future in aged care will be in enabling retirees to stay in their homes for 

as long as possible in their retirement, and bringing needed services to their 

homes (which includes ILUs in a retirement village setting). Hostel facilities, 

catering for low to high care residents, would ultimately be converted to use, 

where the demand was greatest, most likely in high care dementia care. For 

viability, the planning is to extend the hostel to a 40 bed plus facility, within the 

next 7 to 10 years. 

It is further planned to build a community centre. CHRV has always had as part 

of its ‘Mission’, to serve the community, meaning the Village community as well 

as the wider Hornsby community, and to this end, a community centre with 

multi –purpose rooms is envisaged, to augment services to the aged including 

the provision of ancillary health services. 

Architects Ray Fitz-Gibbon & Associates had been appointed and were currently 

working on the Architect Master Plan, in line with the Architect Brief, with a DA 

lodgement process complete by, it is hoped for, November 2013.

MEET THE COACH OF BEROWRA’S WALLABIES! 

Name: Michael Wall 

Aka Nick Name: ‘Mick’ 

Role: A Grade Coach. 2012. 

Age: 45 (born 1967) 

Born at: Hornsby Hospital 

Marital Status: ‘Single’ at the moment 

Job: Technician (now A grade coach as well) 

Favourite Food: Seafood and Pizza 

My Story: I am a dad of two boys, Nathan and 

Bradley and am very involved in Rugby League. I 

live locally and love the area. I have always been 

involved in the coaching side of the Berowra Wallabies 

and have coached a number of grades that my boys played in. I went to Manly a 

couple of years ago and coached the Harold Matthews, SG Ball and Under 20’s. 

These competitions are of a very high quality and I am very proud of my boys being 

selected to play in these squads. Nathan played for the Western Reds SG ball side 

last year and Bradley is playing in the SG North Sydney squad this year. Both my 

boys have gone through the ranks of Berowra Wallabies and then North Sydney 

Rep’s. I think that the Berowra Wallabies are a great junior club, that help grow its 

own local talent. I know that there are about ten local kids that are playing rep footy 

around the place and that is a real good thing for the Wallabies Club. 

Training Routine: With the appointment of A grade coach, I will be training 

the side twice a week. Come down and meet some of the boys on training days. 

We train Tuesday and Thursday at 6.45pm. The boys will train to the usual clubs 

methods, skills and drills. They are a close knit of boys with youth, experience and 

talent that we will build on from last year’s success. The Berowra Club is a family 

orientated club and needs the support of the local community. So, on a Saturday 

and Sunday come down to Warrina Street oval Berowra and support all the junior 

and senior teams. 

Goals and Ambitions: My ambition is to see that at least one player a year reach 

the representative grade. That is a good achievement for me as a coach. You see 

enthusiasm in players and I just like to be there to implement my coaching skills 

to help these players achieve their ambitions and make a rep side. Last year the A 

grade won the premiership so we have a title to defend and that in itself is another 

goal. I have confidence in the boys playing to their best and achieving it again this 

year.

Comments: I would also like to mention that the club is putting on a ‘Family Fun 

Day’ on Sunday March 25th. All the kids, players, families, coaches and managers 

get together for a BBQ and social activities at Warrina Street oval prior to the start of 

the season. The coaches and captains will also be introduced to the community. It’s 

always a great social day. Keep an eye out in the Bush Tele for further details. And, 

even though the official rego day is over you can still register your young ones, so 

see the club website for further details.

My Story: Since I did this last year I don’t think most 

of the answers have changed. I was still born in 

Doonside in Sydney’s Western Suburbs and lived 

there for three years, before moving to Sydney, with 

my family, where I have lived ever since. I still love Berowra, and, am again proud 

to be the Captain of last year’s and hopefully this year’s premiership winning team. 

Just to recap: I attended Berowra Public School and then went to St Leo’s College 

at Wahroonga. I have played footy for Berowra for a few years now and won the 

C grade premiership about four years ago. Last year I was privileged enough to 

Captain the A grade side in a hard fought grand final against Willoughby. We were 

down in the first half but with the great Berowra spirit we dug deep in the second half 

and bough home the trophy. 

It was a great victory for our boys on the night. 

I still train hard and go to the gym four days a week. 

My goal for 2012 is to again hopefully lead my mates to another premiership. 

I urge everyone to come down to Warrina Street on the weekend and support your 

local team. Playing in front of a packed Warrina Street Oval crowd really lifts the 

teams when it’s a close hard fought game. 

FURTHER NOTE: 

We also need more registrations of players across all the teams especially in the 

U6’s, U11’s and U15’s. You can still register by downloading the forms from the 

website berowrawallabies.com.au It is still great value compared to other sports with 

costs being U6’s to U8’s at $90 and U9’s to A grades $120 and that include a kit 

of socks, shorts and a smart polo shirt. It’s great value across any code. 

There are also positions vacant for any mums to come and help in the canteen 

(please). It’s an easy afternoon for any mum or dad. 

The president would also like to mention that any manager, coach, or parent who 

would like to be involved is more than welcome to come to the committee meetings 

and offer any opinions or input. There are in total only about 5 committee meetings 

once the season starts, once a month. There is a cool drink and biscuits that are 

supplied so that you can have your say in your sons or daughters team. So, please 

come along and join in the decisions. 

Our first trial for the season is on the weekend 17/18 March at Ourimbah and the 

kick off for the season is on the following weekend of 31March. 

Come to the meetings and Come to the Game.
