14th Annual Australian Club

Entertainment Awards Night

WEDNESDAY 21st March 2012 – THE JUNIORS

Chairman’s Message

The Club Industry - for more than 100 years - has been an integral

part of Australian society... a focus of social, community and sporting

support for millions of Australians.

A major part of that appeal to members and guests is the

live entertainment that clubs provide, whether through

world-class shows at the big venues in metropolitan

centres, or the single and duo acts in the corner of a

regional club recreation area. Australia’s entertainers

provide a special ingredient to the successful recipe for

club members.

While clubs face a disturbingly extensive list of individuals

and factions who wish to put their mark on how our

industry should be run, we battle on with dignity and

determination to provide the services, facilities and

opportunities that our members and communities have

come to expect.

Like the clubs in which they perform, our club entertainers

weather these storms alongside their clubs. They go on

each night with a smile and level of professionalism

that is a credit to each person and group. Despite these

challenges, the relationship between clubs and professional

entertainers has never been stronger. Around the world,

Australia is famous for its club entertainment “nursery”,

having produced some of the most successful solo and

group performers in history.

It’s my privilege to welcome you to the 14th annual

Australian Club Entertainment (ACE) Awards Dinner,

acknowledging excellence in club entertainment for 2011.

Performers, like clubs, are always working on providing

something new and fresh in their presentation and, for the

ACE Awards in 2012, it’s a new venue – The Juniors

at Kingsford.

Tonight’s theme is “Playing To Win” which is appropriate for

clubs in working to provide a strong industry offering work

opportunities for entertainers of all categories.

The ACE Event Management Team - Nigel Lampe and Anita

McMillan, with Ralph Kober and Shannon Donato from the

CMAA, Maria Pena from ClubsNSW, Doug May from major

sponsor Lion, and Brad Stanford from host club

The Juniors - is delighted with the Club Industry’s support

and the active role that the Club Managers Association

Australia and ClubsNSW have provided in organising this

important event.

Congratulations to our host club – The Juniors @

Kingsford. The enthusiastic and pro-active role of the club’s

management team and staff has ensured the 2011 Awards

will further enhance its position as the highlight of the

Club Entertainment Awards calendar.

It’s also important to acknowledge the contribution that

Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club has made to the

success of the ACE Awards over the past decade.

Special thanks to our Sponsors and Supporters Lion,

particularly Lion and Doug May who have staunchly

supported the ACE Awards since its inception. The support

and commitment of our sponsors makes the night possible.

Many are clubs that have an ongoing commitment to

providing opportunities to artists. On behalf of everyone

here tonight – and performing at clubs around Australia -

I thank you for your support.

I’m looking forward to finding out the winners and

enjoying the spectacular array of acts that you will

experience. So, sit back and - even if you are an ACE

Awards nominee - relax and enjoy the show.

Lifetime Achievement Award

The Delltones were formed in 1958 by four

young lifesavers, Noel Weiderberg, Warren Lucas,

Brian Perkins and Ian ‘Peewee’ Wilson starting

out as a four part vocal harmony group.

That same year The Delltones appeared live in Bob

Roger’s 2GB studio and were immediately booked

for Lee Gordon’s ‘Big Shows’ and performed with

many visiting American Stars of the time as well

as local artists. During the early years they were

mentored by the late Johnny O’Keefe and appeared

with him on his many television shows including ‘Six

O’clock Rock’ and ‘Sing Sing Sing’. Brian Henderson’s

‘Bandstand’ the cross-generational television show

helped to make The Delltones a household name.

“During the early years they were mentored

by the late Johnny O’Keefe and appeared

with him on his many television shows”

In 1962 with the

single ‘Get a Little

Dirt On Your Hands’

on the top of the

charts, lead vocalist

Noel Weiderberg tragically died in a car accident.

After encouragement from Noel’s family and friends

and with new member Col Loughnan The Delltones

released ‘Come a Little Bit Closer’ and the locally

written surfing hit ‘Hangin Five’. Both songs reaching

into the top five right around Australia. From 1959

to 1964 they had 15 singles in the top 40 charts.

In 1963 The Delltones won The Best Australian

Composition Award for ‘Hangin Five’ and Best Vocal

Group from Macquarie Radio. That same year, they

received the Golden Microphone Award for Best

14th Annual Australian Club Entertainment Awards Night Playing to Win

Sponsored by

Vocal Group from 6IX in Perth and Best Australian

Record from Melbourne’s 3UZ.

In 1966 The Delltones went to Vietnam to perform

for the troops and later were awarded the Vietnam

Logistic and Support Medal. In 1968 The Delltones

returned to Vietnam with a new line up and went on

to tour the Far East and then to London.

During their time in London The Delltones were

signed to EMI Records. Their reworking of the classic

‘Gimme Some Lovin’ secured them a worldwide

release and an appearance on ‘Top of the Pops’. It was

in London that Peewee met his now wife Carla, who

from 1983 to the present day has managed the band.

After touring Europe,

the group returned

home and toured

Australia for the next

three years. By the end

of 1981 Peewee Wilson reinventing the venerable

entity, changing it from a vocal group to vocal band.

In 1982 The Delltones received their first Mo Award

and kicked off 1984 with the rock ‘n’ roll revival

album ‘Bop Till You Drop’. The album went gold

almost immediately and was number two on the

Kent music report album chart in Sydney. It also

entered the Aria charts at number 20. By this time

The Delltones were in a full-blown revival with

regular appearances on television shows such as

‘Mike Walsh,’ ‘The Ray Martin Midday Show’ and ‘Hey

Hey It’s Saturday’. This along with press exposure

opened the doors to a national touring circuit of

clubs, pubs, theatres, concert halls and outdoor

festivals with sell-out shows. A completely new

generation of fans was to establish their reputation

as one of the great performing bands in Australia

and this has continued to sustain them to this day.

From 1984 to 1994 The Delltones continued to tour

and went on to receive three more Mo Awards. The

following year they returned to their surfing roots

with the album ‘The Sunshine Club’. At the same

time they recorded the single ‘Breaking Waves ‘and

dedicated the song to the Surf Life Saving Club’s

of Australia. Then in 1998 they started a national

tour with the release of the compilation album ‘The

Big Four O’ to celebrate the bands 40th anniversary.

Between 1999 and 2006 the band continued tour

and in 2007 received their first ACE Award. In the

following years The Delltones were honoured with

three more ACE awards. In 2008 The Delltones

celebrated 50 Years of performing and recording

with the release of their double album CD and DVD

entitled ‘BopaDooWop A-Live in Concert’ together

with a national tour.

The slogan immortalised by Peewee in the 80’s ‘Keep

on raging to stop the ageing’ and true to spirit of

that motto The Delltones today continue to record

and perform with founding member Ian ‘Peewee’

Wilson along with Woody Finlayson, Merv Dick and

Owen Booth.
