Blended learning
planned in SWCS
As a new school year approaches, there
are a number of questions that have been
at the forefront of the minds of administrators,
parents, students and staff members.
Among those are whether in-person
instruction will be allowed and if so, what
will it look like? Will it be safe to attend?
And what adjustments will be made should
the state once again order buildings closed
to slow the spread of a novel coronavirus?
The answers to these questions are com-
Mums
the word!
After more than an hour of planting
hundreds of mums, the Friends of
Westgate Park volunteers (above) gather
near a flower bed. Tom Price, a westside
resident who is also a volunteer
with the group, grew all of the 250
mums that were planted on July 22 in
his basement. He said that there will be
10 varieties this year and a majority of
these Bell Mums will be introduced to
the public next year. “It will be kind of a
preview event,” he joked.
Two months from now, these little
babies that Molly Donavan (right) is
helping to plant will become one of the
most beloved attractions at Westgate
Park come fall – the gorgeous and colorful
mums that adorn the large bed
near the main entrance.
plex and fluid, say district officials, but an attempt to give clarification
on the upcoming 2020/21 school year was made at the
South-Western City Schools board of education meeting in July.
The opening of the district will largely follow guidelines recommended
by the Ohio Department of Health. Recently, the department
created a color coded warning system
Douglas, Ed, Jim
and Kip Malek
Ben Churchhill
community events
that aims to show prominence of the virus
in each county, thereby making it easier to
implement additional closures or measures
on a county basis.
Under the system, there are four levels:
yellow, orange, red and purple. Under their
guidance, the district will close buildings
and go to a virtual-only format should the
county reach level 4, or purple; have blended
learning instruction at level 3, or red;
and go to 100 percent face-to-face instruction
at levels 2 or 1 (or orange and yellow).
As the county is currently under a level
3, the district intends to open the new
school year on Aug. 27 in a blended learning
model.
According to Superintendent Dr. Bill
Wise, the student body at each building will
be divided into two groups as determined by
an algorithm through the Infinite Campus.
“One group will have face-to-face
instruction on Mondays and Tuesdays, and
the other group will have face-to-face
instruction on Thursday and Fridays,” he
said while presenting the opening of schools
draft to the board.
Those who are not physically in the
building on their designated days will
receive instruction either through materials
sent home with them or remotely as
they did from mid-March to the end of the
2019/20 school year.
The buildings will be closed on
Wednesdays so there can be a “deep cleaning”
of the rooms and its furnishings. The
district has committed to two deep cleanings
and frequent daily cleaning of high
touch areas such as door knobs and bathrooms.
Occasionally, there will be weeks where
a holiday lands on a Monday or Friday.
Deputy Superintendent Dave Stewart said
the groupings will move either the days
before or after the holiday, and the holiday
will be spent deep cleaning.
In relation to the groups, Stewart said
families will be kept together and parents
Westland Area Commission
Produce giveaway at YMCA
giveaway the third Wednesday of each
call the YMCA at 614-276-8224.
can request their students be moved into the other grouping if it
best fits their work schedule.
Within a month of implementing the blended learning model,
Wise said they should have a clearer picture as to whether it is feasible
to move to the 100 percent face-to-face instruction format. He
said they would like to move to that model on Sept. 21.
Parents who do not want their children to attend in-person
instruction this year are being offered an alternative pathway
through the Virtual Learning Academy.
The Virtual Learning Academy, explained Wise, will be taught
primarily by a district instructor or supplemented by educators
through the Jefferson County Educational Service Center, which
has partnered with the district for more than a decade in a variety
of capacities.
Stewart said upperclassmen taking this pathway will be able to
take electives though some elective courses may be limited due to
staffing.
One caveat of this pathway, said Wise, is that once a parent
commits their child/children to the Virtual Learning Academy,
they are doing so for the entire 2020/21 school year.
Enrollment for the Virtual Learning Academy began on July 20
and runs through Aug. 7. Applications can be found at the district’s
website.
District officials said they are more prepared now to run the virtual
only model should need be than they were when building closures
were mandated in March.
Wise said that in the case of these models, there is a level of risk
to each of them.
“At the end of the day, there is not a way forward that does not
involve some level of risk, either with social and emotional learning
or health consequences for our school and staff,” he said.
He added that the district will do all they can to maintain current
safety protocols to “minimize the impact” to the greatest
extent possible.
The district will also be requiring students and staff to wear a
face mask or facial covering while in the building. Exceptions will
be made for those who have a medical condition with a note from
a licensed physician or school nurse.
The younger students will be allowed “mask breaks” as determined
by the teacher or at recess. They will also have to wear
them while riding the bus. While the district encourages students
to bring their own masks, they will be provided if one forgets to
bring it.
Additional safety measures include hand sanitizing stations in
each classroom; the limitation of shared classroom supplies; the
partitioning of the school’s clinic to separate suspected COVID-19
cases; the elimination of overnight field trips until late November
and the minimization of others; the encouragement to bring individual
water bottles to limit water fountain use; and a grab-andgo
style in the cafeteria. Kitchen staff will also be using barcode
scanners in lieu of student ID number punch in’s. The district said
they will still be offering breakfast and lunch to the student groups
on their designated remote learning days.

A local township that plans on asking
voters to approve a fire levy this fall also
anticipates asking for a police levy in the
coming years. At a recent special meeting,
Franklin Township Police Department officials
discussed the need to ask voters for
these funds.
“We have a five-year timed levy that is
set to expire at the end of 2022,” said
Franklin Township Police Chief Byron
Smith. “Where things stand at the end of
March or May 2022, we will have to ask for
another levy.”
Smith said the department needs the
funds to keep its current staffing level. He
said prior to this levy being approved, the
department only had five full-time staffers
and were operating limited hours and
shifts.
“Currently, we have 13 full-time officers
and three part-time officers,” Smith said.
“We need an additional levy to be able to
continue to provide the current service we
offer to township residents.”
The millage amount and if the levy
would be timed or permanent is still being
discussed by township leaders.
The police department has two other
permanent levies it collects from township
taxpayers. Those levies bring in approximately
$700,000 a year.
“Those levies are well over 20 years old
and decrease in value as time goes on,”
Smith said. “As a result, we have to find
other avenues of revenue to makeup those
funds.”
Smith said if voters reject a levy, the
department would most likely have to cut
staff and reduce the services and hours of
operation. He said officers would not be
able to respond to some types of calls.
“It really will depend on the type of service
residents want when we ask voters to
approve this levy,” Smith said. “With a
smaller staff, we won’t be able to provide
the same service we do now. If residents
are OK with us not responding to some
types of calls, then they may be OK with
not having another levy.”
Some of the calls officers would not
respond to include minor violations and
home complaints, including complaints
about loud noise.
Smith said if the township is not able to
pass a levy, the department would lose at
least three to five officers.
This would be the second levy the township
would be asking for within a two-year
period as the fire department is asking for
a timed levy this November. The fire
department previously asked for a 19.5-
mill permanent levy in the spring, but voters
didn’t approve the levy.
This time the fire department is going to
ask for a timed levy and the trustees are
still determining the millage amount. The
township is considering anywhere from a
5.89-mill to 13-mill levy.
The fire department’s 5.89-mill levy
five-year timed levy will expire at the end
A local township is getting creative in
its program offerings in an attempt to keep
residents physically fit, while protecting
them from the novel coronavirus. The
Prairie Township Community Center has
offered some unique programming to keep
residents moving.
Among these programs is outdoor yoga,
which allows community center members
to stay active while socially distancing.
“With the weather warmer now, it
allows us to move some of our programming
outside, which is perfect for social
distancing,” said Rob Peters, township
administrator for Prairie Township.
“Members can safely participate in group
fitness classes, but also socially distance to
protect themselves from COVID-19.”
Peters said the community center is still
offering virtual group fitness classes for
those who are not comfortable coming into
the center. Some of these virtual group
classes include gentle yoga, Hess boot
camp and youth ballet lessons.
The center also has offered some virtual
programming for those looking to learn
something new or want some entertainment
at home. These classes have included
an essential oil series, magic classes, how
to have a chemical free summer and a
healthy home, healthy life course. All of
these virtual group fitness and education
courses are taught via Zoom by instructors
at the community center.
The township will continue to monitor
expenses at the community center and trying
to mitigate costs wherever possible
until it can be fully up and running again.
“Right now, we don’t have the pool
pumping and filtering so that is saving a
lot of money,” Peters said. “We also have
looked at our cable contract and how we
can reduce that and continue to look for
other ways to save.”
The township also continues to look at
how businesses and residents are weathering
the COVID-19 pandemic and offer services
to help those in need. This includes
reminding residents about a foodbank in
the area in case they need food assistance.
“We have a well-established foodbank
on Galloway Road if anyone is in need,”
Peters said. “This foodbank also is accepting
monetary donations if anyone wants to
donate to them.”

Approximately $20 million in grants are
available to Franklin County nonprofits,
due to a joint effort by Franklin County
and the city of Columbus.
The partnership has been dubbed the
Columbus and Franklin County Resilience
Initiative and utilizes CARES Act funding.
“Nonprofits have been taxed with a
tremendous amount of need during this
pandemic. Many have exceeded their yearly
budget already,” said board of commissioner’s
president John O’Grady. “We know
their daily efforts are critical to our collective
success.”
Agencies can access a single application
to apply for funding from this joint fund,
which will be managed by the United Way
of Central Ohio. The money can be used to
cover revenue losses, new expenses and
increased expenses incurred during the
novel coronavirus pandemic.
“Our nonprofit community has been
doing extraordinary work in the midst of
this global pandemic,” said commissioner
Marilyn Brown. “They have given everything
to meet the critical needs of our community,
while facing serious health and
funding headwinds for their own staff and
organizations. It is vital we take care of
them as well.”
The $20 million fund is a continuation of
ongoing efforts by county and city officials
to weather the pandemic. Franklin County
is committing $5 million for this initiative,
stories for the Children.
westside
and that comes in the form in Netflix’s “The
Old Guard.”
Based on a five-series comic from veteran
Greg Rucka, “The Old Guard” features a
black woman (Gina Prince-Bythewood) at
the helm, two butt kicking women (characters
and actors) in the lead, and a sickeningly
sweet gay couple who are intrinsic to
the plot and cannot be erased out when the
film is released to more restrictive countries.
And if that is not enough of a draw for
you, it has well-choreographed battle
sequences, an arsenal of medieval weapons
and it is a pretty decent film to boot with a
moderate to high entertainment value.
The movie centers around a quartet of
mercenaries who have been fighting
together for ages, and that is meant in a
more literal sense than figurative. The
group is led by Andy/Andromache of
In Entertainment
“e Old Guard” will have comic lovers clamoring for more
Scythia (Charlize Theron) whose age is
estimated at 1,000. For as long as she can
remember, she has been dying in battle (or
in other ways) only to be revived again for
no apparent reason. Throughout her long
life, she has found only a handful of other
immortals like her and their weariness of
the world and their place in it is beginning
to show.
After an indefinite leave of absence,
Andy is brought back into the fold by
Napoleonic War veteran Booker (Matthias
Schoenaerts) and opposing Crusade fighters
and longtime lovers Joe and Nicky
(played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca
Marinelli, respectively) to rescue a group of
kidnapped girls in South Sudan.
Upon arriving at their destination and
learning more of the mission from former
CIA operative James Copley (Chiwetel
Ejiofor), the quartet quickly discover that it
was nothing but a ruse to get them to
unwillingly unveil their secrets.
As they regroup from the betrayal and
try to determine what Copley has on them
and what he wants from it, they discover
the existence of a new immortal, a young
U.S. Marine named Nile Freeman (KiKi
Layne) who died and revived serving in
Afghanistan. While they have always had
time on their side (or, minor spoiler, so it
seems), it is now of the essence as they try
to track down those who would do them
Pets of the week
Roxanne came to
the shelter after her
owner passed away.
This sweet 9-yearold
should not be in a
home with smaller
animals and is selective
with dogs her
own size. Roxanne
does have some medical conditions, including
hip dysplasia and joint disease that will
have to be monitored by her primary vet. Do
you think you might have the perfect home for
this senior lady? Book an appointment and
bring any future dog companions to the county
shelter and meet her.
FYI: www.franklincountydogs.com
Riley came to the
Franklin County Dog
Shelter with injuries.
She may have been
struck by a vehicle.
Whatever caused her
injury, Riley had her
front leg amputated.
She is now ready to
find a new home
where she can gain confidence walking and
learning to live the three-legged life. Before
coming to the shelter, Riley lived with other
dogs and children. Schedule an appointment
to meet her today.
FYI: www.franklincountydogs.com
harm, and those who plan to do harm to the
new immortal as word of her rebirth
spreads through the ranks.
There are a lot of interesting things
about this movie, and a lot of things that
can drive one to levels of irritation. Most of
the latter are minor quibbles, such as the
pop infused soundtrack, the use of common
language in ancient times and weak exposition
by screenwriter Rucka, but the film
itself takes some time to find its groove.
But when it does and the medieval
weapons start to fly, it is a fun yet thoughtful
look at battle and world hardened warriors
who are still trying to find their place
in this universe.
With the vast amounts of history and
backstory to mine, it is no surprise that
fans of the comic book series and cinematic
adaptation are clamoring for more. It is set
up perfectly for a sequel, and maybe a
mini-series spin-off, and it’s not something
I would be averse to either.
