INFLUENCER
Providing services to assist her clients to feel “fabulous”
about themselves is a passion of Margaret’s and she
thrives on finding ways to enhance their experience
and achieve their desired results.
As a beauty/massage therapist and business owner,
Margaret provides a boutique service for her clients
who relish in the atmosphere of a quiet, private clinic
environment.
How did you start in personal
care?
My professional career began with providing respite
care for a large company as well as part time in the
hospital side of a rest home. I believe it’s the little
things, which make a big difference to a person’s day.
Years ago at an appointment with my beauty therapist,
she told me about a job she was offered to do massage
for a sports therapist. I joked with her and said, I
would like to do that and the rest is history. My drive
to support client’s health from the inside out is the
primary focus of my business today.
“I’ve been in the health and beauty industry for almost
20 years. While working as a massage therapist I
trained in beauty therapy. I’m very lucky to have had
two amazing mentors over the years who taught me
many skills and a lot about health. Beauty therapy
and skin correction is a large part of what I do. It
includes pampering facials and advanced non-surgical
skin correction treatments, including Dermal Micro
Needling, IPL and Plamere Fibroblast therapy.
What’s your motto?
My personal and business motto is “I want everyone
who enters my doorway to leave feeling better than
when they arrived,” Margaret says, with a sincere smile.
My work doesn’t feel like work at all to me as I love
what I do and am blessed with wonderful clients.
How do you spend your down time?
That is a work in progress as I enjoy my job so much.
When I do have “down time”, I spend time with my
family and I like to go dancing, both modern jive and
tango. I love going out to watch the rugby at the local
pub and gardening is really important to me, it’s my
happy place. We are so lucky in Christchurch, there are
so many things to do.
LIVING
LIFE
SCIENCE
The University of Canterbury (UC) has launched a
new science podcast series to meet public demand for
answers to the big issues facing our world.
UC Science Radio is a new weekly podcast featuring
interviews with UC scientists on topical issues relating
to their areas of expertise and research. It addresses
some of the big challenges facing our society, both
locally and globally, and what science is doing to help.
Hosted by UC Master of Science student and US
Fulbright Scholar Molly Magid, the shows are
challenging but also entertaining and accessible to
listeners who may not have a science background.
Topics include the science behind volcanic eruptions,
micronutrients for stress, helping endangered species
find their perfect match, ever decreasing glaciers, and
what plastic is doing to our sea life.
Five episodes have been released so far with new
episodes forthcoming.
Episode 1: Designing cities
for better health
Human Geography Professor Simon Kingham
talks about the impact of city spaces on our mental
health, why cycleways are thriving in post-quake
Christchurch, and his role as Chief Science Advisor
for the Ministry of Transport.
Episode 2: Making sense of
molecules
Structural chemist Associate Professor Sarah Masters
talks about her work as a ‘molecular detective’ where
she investigates how molecules behave, what they do,
and how we can use them to create everything from
new technologies and materials to developing lifesaving
vaccines.
Episode 3: It’s like Tinder…
for birds!
Conservation geneticist Associate Professor Tammy
Steeves talks about finding the ideal mate for some
of Aotearoa New Zealand's most endangered native
species, and about how kindness is changing the way
we do science - for the better.
Episode 4: Rocking out with
volcanoes
UC volcanologist Associate Professor Ben Kennedy,
an internationally recognised expert in physical
volcanology and an award-winning teacher, talks
about the science behind eruptions, his travels to the
world's volcanic hotspots, and how teaching can be
driven by fun and games.
Episode 5: Ending our love
affair with plastic
UC environmental chemist Associate Professsor
Sally Gaw explains the damage plastic is doing to our
wildlife and environment, and where it’s ending up –
from rainwater and sea salt to the insides of tuna and
mackerel. Assoc Prof Gaw, who has spent her career
studying environmental contaminants, also talks
about all the antibacterial soap and hand sanitiser
we’re using at the moment and why it’s not so great for
our waterways.
OVER 60’S
UNITS
If you are considering a change of
scenery, it may be useful to consider the
different types of properties available to
you. When it comes time to downsize
the family home, you might consider
a retirement village or buying a new
home. One option you may not have
considered is an over-60’s unit. The
Council identified a need for accessible
housing for senior members of the
Christchurch community within the
private sector. Zoning land which allows
for over-60’s housing is one way of
addressing these needs.
SUDOKU - EASY
As the name suggests, over-60’s units are
designed with people over 60 years of
age in mind. The purpose of these units
is to provide a self-managed community
for seniors as an alternative to retirement
villages. The units are usually smaller
in size and a single storey. What makes
over-60s units unique is that there is
an encumbrance registered on the title
requiring that the occupants of the
house be 60 years of age or older. An
encumbrance is a restriction that is
placed on a title, and prevents the owner
from doing certain activities. In the case
of over-60’s units, the encumbrance
EXERCISE THE MIND
SUDOKU - MEDIUM
QUICK CROSSWORD SOLUTIONS ON PAGE 6
prevents certain people from living in the property. To qualify
to live in an over-60’s unit, you need to be either over 60 years
of age, or qualify for a permanent supported living payment
on health grounds. Partners, spouses, dependents, and
caregivers of a qualifying person can also live in the property.
Over-60’s units are different from retirement villages or
Council-managed flats. Over-60’s units are properties that
you own. This means you won’t have to pay any deferred
management fees when you sell the property, like you would
for an occupation right agreement at a retirement village.
However, you also don’t get the benefit of the support services
retirement villages usually provide. Over-60’s units are
commonly owned by way of a unit title, which is a group of
properties in a single development that share common areas.
Unit title properties often have a governing body, called a
Body Corporate, made up of all the unit title owners and is
responsible for such matters as managing any common areas.
Body Corporates often have special rules about what you
can do with the property, such as whether you can have pets.
It is important that you check these rules before you buy a
unit title property, to ensure that you are willing and able to
comply with them.
If you are considering buying an over-60s unit, or you already
own one, you should keep in mind that if you decide to sell it
there is a limited pool of potential buyers and this may make
the property more difficult to sell. On the other hand, with an
aging population, this type of housing may be in demand for
years to come.
It is possible in limited circumstances to have the
encumbrance removed, allowing anyone of any age to live in
the property. However, as the encumbrance is registered by
the Christchurch City Council, the decision to remove the
encumbrance lies with the Council.
If you are considering buying or selling an over-60’s unit, it’s
best to talk to a specialist first. The team at Harmans Lawyers
has the knowledge and experience to help you navigate this
process. Please contact Phillipa Shaw on 03 352 2293 to
arrange a time to discuss your situation.
RESEARCH
WHITE ISLAND ROCKS HOLD
CLUES TO ERUPTION RISK
New research indicates cracked rocks on Whakaari (White
Island) act like valves allowing gas to escape and releasing the
build- up of pressure that triggers volcanic eruptions, new
University of Canterbury research has found.
The finding, which could allow more accurate monitoring
and forecasting of future eruptions, is based on a study of
rocks ejected from the Bay of Plenty island volcano during an
eruption in April 2016, well before the volcanic explosion on 9
December last year which led to the deaths of 21 people.
A team of University of Canterbury (UC) scientists and
Frontiers Abroad students (visiting UC from United States
colleges), together with GNS Science and international
researchers, collected the rocks from the island in 2016 and
studied them, including testing to see how easily they crack
and how gas travels through them.
The team discovered that cracked rocks can act like valves –
opening and closing – to allow gas to escape.
Lead researcher Dr Ben Kennedy, UC Associate Professor of
Physical Volcanology in the School of Earth Sciences, says
the findings are “remarkable” and will help scientists better
understand the behaviour of the volcano and interpret its
sounds and tremors.
“We hope our research will ultimately lead to more accurate
volcanic monitoring and forecasting of future eruptions,” he
says.
“We discovered that the rocks from Whakaari behaved in
a unique way. Cracks formed easily, allowing gas to escape,
but because the minerals were mushy the cracks sealed again
when pressed together by the weight of the volcano, forming a
valve.”
The research, published in the journal Geosciences this
month, allows scientists to link certain
earthquakes to the movement of fluid
through valves within the volcano. This
could allow them to track and monitor
a build-up of activity that signals gas is
moving through the volcano.
Associate Professor Kennedy says
when the rocks were examined under
a microscope the composition of very
small minerals encrusted in and around
the cracks could be seen.
MERCEDES-
BENZ ON A
CHARGE WITH
ELECTRIC SUV
BY ROSS KIDDIE
Don’t put me down as a non-believer, but I have always
been a little sceptical that burning fossil fuel is the cause of
all our climate change and global warming issues.
But the recent coronavirus alert levels 3 and 4 lockdown
indicated that without so many cars on the road, air quality
improved, and pollution, which is claimed to affect climate
change, was lower.
I’ll take that on the chin and going forward I’ll be more
aware of how burning oil products seemingly affects our
everyday life.
I guess that’s where electricity comes in, cars with motors
as opposed to engines have become the vehicles of choice
for those who vehemently believe electric vehicles are the
way of the future.
EVs aren’t new but they are resurgent at the moment, and
you can buy anything from a Nissan Leaf to a Tesla; inbetween
there are a myriad of other options and one which
clearly sits in the luxury car class is the Mercedes-Benz
EQC 400, also branded as a sport utility vehicle.
It’s no surprise that Mercedes-Benz is marketing its first
EV down under, it’s only a matter of time before more
luxury car brands ply their electric technology globally.
However, a big surprise is the EQC 400’s price tag. At
$142,900 it’s not cheap, but when you think a few years ago
a new Nissan Leaf or Mitsubishi iMieV was around half
that price, and today’s fully electric Kia Niro and Hyundai
Kona both sit around $70k, the EQC 400 seems like a real
bargain.
I think it is, if you take into account what you get in terms
of luxury, specification and technology, it is an absolute
champion financially.
The EQC 400 is all electric, there’s no hybrid technology
here, it is powered by two electric motors, one up front and
one in the rear obviously creating drive to all four corners.
Pumping out 300kw and a massive 760Nm of torque,
power is developed from zero revolutions, the instant
you depress the accelerator full power is available;
consequently, the EQC 400 is quick, it will launch to
100km/h from a standstill in 5.1sec, and to make a quick
highway overtake it will blast from 80 to 120km/h in
4.5sec. Of course, that’s not how we drive on an everyday
basis but it’s nice to know if you need the energy it is there
on tap. That’s some of the appeal of electric, there is a
vibrancy you don’t get with internal combustion engines,
unless you are buying a vehicle with an incredibly high
performance engine.
Mercedes-Benz wouldn’t have built a fully electric vehicle
had it not been able to provide the performance and
luxury akin to what the brand represents, and the EQC
certainly delivers in those areas.
It also has to be user-friendly, just like the raft of EVs that
are plying our market it’s a simple procedure to plug in at
home or any of the charge stations that are being rolled out
nationwide.
On the road the EQC drives like any normal SUV, and the
way you drive is no different to any other Mercedes-Benz
SUV. The controls and instruments are pretty much the
same. There are even several drive modes that you choose,
from economical to sport. I only tried sport for a short
burst and came to the realisation you don’t really need that
mode; sure it delivers a vivid response but even in standard
mode there is an underlying feel of power.
The downside of using the wonderful burst of energy is the
rapid depletion of battery energy. Mercedes-Benz rate the
EQC 400 as having a 430km range, that would be under
the most favourable operating conditions, you need to be
mindful that stop-start driving and exploring acceleration
will quickly deplete the batteries of their energy.
In terms of cost to replenish battery supply there are
complicated mathematical equations to consider,
everything from service provider to night and day rates,
but a rough figure of around $5 to $10 to fully charge from
zero per cent is a guideline.
Not only does the EQC 400 have the latest generation
mechanical and electronic technology, it is also the
quintessential SUV for today’s busy lifestyle. It has space
and functionality that will appeal to the modern family,
and it is loaded with all the gadgetry that will satisfy an
owner for decades.
It’s fair to say the EQC 400 is an enjoyable drive, and those
who do go down that road, so to speak, will reap many
benefits along with knowing they are doing their bit for the
environment.
As for me, I need to get over range anxiety, I was very
mindful of the distance I travelled, knowing that at
some point I’d need to find a charger. That’s a matter of
reconfiguring the way my mind is mapped and adjusting.
