After considering

the probability that

coronavirus can

spread through

airborne transmission,

and acknowledging some

evidence proving that in-room

transmission is something to

worry about, governments,

building engineers, HVAC

manufacturers, regulators,

and trade groups should start

planning on improving airflows

to reduce the spread of the

virus indoors. Making changes

in airflow management, airpurification

systems, and

ventilation systems are one of

the best ways that may help in

preventing more infections.

Covid-19 Airborne Impact

on Buildings’ HVAC System

HVAC systems are effective

in keeping the air clean as

it is composed of devices,

including mechanical filters,

which can filter small to large

particles. However, not all

HVAC systems can trap small

particles, such as coronavirus

which is 0.1 microns. Also, the

US ratings for HVAC systems

show that only 0.3-micron

particles can be filtered using

High-Efficiency Particulate Air

(HEPA) filters. And so, more

research is a must to figure

out what minimum of filtration

rating could take out the

coronavirus particles from the

air.

Apart from upgrading or

changing the HVAC systems,

having better airflow

management could play a

significant role in controlling

4

the transmission. One of

the best ways is to create

a vertical laminar airflow

instead of turbulent. This way,

we can assure that the air

will be particle-free. Another

method is to keep the air at

a slow and steady speed

so particles wouldn’t be

able to travel fast from one

person to another. Moreover,

having sufficient air outlets in

buildings or upgrading them

may also effectively prevent

transmission via air.

While it is still not validated

whether having HVAC

systems can help prevent the

COVID-19 transmission or

not, it is always best to protect

oneself all the time, especially

indoors where close physical

contact is inevitable. Wearing

masks and keeping physical

distance should always be

kept in mind when indoors or

in public places.

How to Maximize Total Effeciency of the Office with

an HVAC System

Improvement of Indoor Air Quality with Smart Innovations from LG Electronics

People spend most of their working lives

indoors. This reality stresses the importance

of indoor air quality across working

environments. Statistics from the National

Human Activity Pattern Survey (NHAPS) show

that people spend approximately 90 percent of their

waking hours indoors.[1] Furthermore, the average

person spends over 13 years of their life at work

according to one analysis from HuffPost Australia.[2]

At the same time, advances in technology have

reshaped daily life. Cities, buildings and the future

workplace is dependent on smart innovations.

The evolvement of HVAC system, which is one

of the key elements of building management, is

on course with this trend. There are three major

necessary conditions of HVAC systems; increase the

productivity of employees, meet the needs of office

buildings by traits, and promote both energy and

economic efficiency.

Healthy air to boost up the business

performance

The average person spends eight hours a day

breathing air from the office. Therefore, it is clear

that the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) of the office affects

business performance.

Studies have shown that productivity and indoor air

quality in the office are strongly linked.[3] Comparing

the performance of employees working in ‘healthy air’

to those working in ‘polluted air’, employees working

in healthy air made up an additional $15,500 more per

year.

Furthermore, the cognitive function was improved by

50 percent when the CO2 level in the office was lowered

from the normal concentration of 1,400 ppm to 600

ppm according to a study by Harvard T.H. Chan School

of Public Health.[4]

For this reason, it is crucial that offices manage the IAQ

by keeping a set temperature by adjusting the wind

direction automatically or utilizing a sensor to detect

when no one is present and stops operation.

Customized zoning satisfying the various

needs of buildings

From large office buildings to government offices and

apartment-type factories in a city, modern workplaces

vary in kind. Even single work environment is composed

of several distinct spaces that meet the needs of various

kinds of work. Therefore, flexible offices should be able

to apply HVAC systems optimized for orientation of the

building and interior space characteristics.

8

Maximized energy and costefficiency

Advancements in HVAC systems can help

building owners save energy by predicting

future energy consumption.[5] For instance,

CIBIS Tower 9, a landmark and LEED®

Platinum- certified building in Jakarta, was

deemed a highly efficient air conditioning

system that could reduce operating energy.

The building chose the best solution

by simulating and comparing energy

consumption before installation.

Also, CIBIS Tower 9 could save the cost

with the support from design, development

and construction stage. As the building

introduced the total HVAC solution,

the tenant can benefit from smooth

maintenance service. Moreover, an accurate

billing system for each space helps to

prevent the unnecessary cost.

LG’s customized HVAC System for

the office

LG Electronics (LG), a world-renowned

home appliance & HVAC company, has

released a line of customized HVAC systems

to improve the efficiency and bring down

the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) of the

office. The company has introduced the

Multi V series to provide the benefits of

Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) to office

buildings.

To improve the working environment

in the Middle East, LG offers Multi V

Air Handling Unit (AHU) and Multi

V Dual Vane 4 Way Cassette. Multi V

AHU, providing ventilation with cooling

and heating, maintains a constant CO2

concentration to provide pleasant indoor

air. Multi V Dual Vane 4 Way Cassette

adjusts the temperature of both direct

and indirect wind to create a comfortable

and efficient working environment. Plus,

the cassette provides clean air with LG’s

advanced air purifying kit and panel which

achieves Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR)

of 692.2 ft3/min.[6]

LG’s HVAC system benefits consultants with

products considering space characteristics.

With one outdoor unit, Multi V 5 can operate both cooling

and heating at the same time. For example, Multi V 5 can

provide cooling in a computer room and a communication

device room with a high heat output while simultaneously

provide heating in general office rooms. In this way, the

flexible, functional and multipurpose needs of the building

could be satisfied.

Also, LG provides great support and service throughout and

after the installation which is a great help to both building

owners and consultants. Moreover, LG offers “Energy

Simulation Analysis” to help customers compare energy

consumption. Furthermore, customers are able to get timely

technical support and onsite training for the installation team.

“As the industry evolves, offices and HVAC systems are

undergoing a vital transformation,” says Mr. Suraj Kumar,

Technical Manager-Air Solutions, LG Electronics Gulf. “LG

Multi V is an efficient VRF with great flexibility. It is the best

solution for offices that prioritize user comfort.”

FEATURE STORY

How to Buy the Right Cleaning Machine for

Electronics Manufacturing Industry

While numerous

low-end production

processes can

opt not to clean

their assembled PCBs, this is

not always the case for many

other industries, especially

the telecommunications,

automotive, aerospace, and

military. High-end assembled

PCBs employed in these

industries require to undergo

a particular cleaning process

to ensure quality and safety.

After all, it is inevitable for

assembled PCBs to acquire a

handful of contaminants, such

as solder residues, debris,

adhesives, and dust, during

the manufacturing process.

Generally speaking, clean,

assembled PCBs are a must in

the electronics manufacturing

industry. This is to avoid any

future troubles in the final

product and guarantee a fullyfunctional

and high-quality

result.

This is why PCB cleaning

is deemed an important

practice following the actual

assembly. Apart from making

the PCB more presentable and

aesthetically pleasing, PCB

cleaning also deals with ionic

contamination.

PCB cleaning is actually done

in a series of several steps.

Before the circuit board is

stenciled and soldered, it

20

should first be cleaned to

remove any contaminant

acquired from the previous

production stages. After the

stenciling and soldering,

the board then undergoes

another round of cleaning, this

time to eliminate any excess

adhesives, solder paste, and

corrosive flux residues.

Through this extra process,

flux residues and resin are

thoroughly removed from

populated boards and hybrids.

Production-related residues,

which are usually created by

handling, are cleared from the

board, as well.

This makes the PCB cleaning

machine a critical aspect

in the manufacturing plant.

Picking the appropriate

device then becomes a

crucial decision as you aim to

produce not only a clean and

non-contaminated board but

also one that complies with

standards.

Types of PCB Cleaning

Machines

There is a wide variety of sizes

available for a PCB cleaning

machine, ranging from a

small brush-based hand tool

to a massive assembly inline

cleaner used for batch

operations. However, the price

of each machine actually

depends on the different

cleaning processes it will be

used for. For each cleaning

process, a special tool or

equipment is usually required.

So before knowing which

machine to purchase, it is

essential to get familiar with

the cleaning process and the

various tools and their usage.

Points to Consider in

Buying a PCB Cleaning

Machine

Selecting the right machine

for your production line often

involves several technical

aspects to consider. You can

go for spray under immersion,

ultrasonic, or dishwasher type

machines depending on your

cleaning requirements.

It is also essential to identify

the right water-based cleaning

chemical to be used for your

specific purpose. Water-based

flux removers neutralize flux

acids through saponification,

producing water-soluble fatty

acid salts that are removed

with continuous water.

However, the downside of

water-based cleaners is that

they often add a few extras

steps to the cleaning process

as they require a two-stage

rinse process on top of a final

drying stage.

Another aspect to keep in

mind before purchasing a

PCB cleaning machine is

the chemical composition

of the contaminants. Take

note of the kind of solder

paste used, the number of

flux cycles the board went

through before cleaning, the

type of components (whether

aluminum, plastic, or others),

and the type of the circuit

board itself and its green and

white mask. Noting these

aspects is critical not only in

the PCB cleaning machine

selection but also in the

cleaning chemical to be used.

Emerging technologies also

play a role in picking the right

type of cleaning machine.

Since component size tends

to decrease, it is essential to

consider a device that will not

wash away tiny components

during the cleaning process.

Cleaning Machine

Supplier in the

Philippines

When it comes to choosing

the correct cleaning machine

supplier in the Philippines,

NuPON Technology is one of

the first to come in mind. They

are among the most trusted

cleaning machine and dust

collector machine distributor

in the country. Here are some

of their available cleaning

machine products for the

electronics manufacturing

industry.

NuPon Cleaning Machine

Products

The SM-8300 Pneumatic

screen silk Machine uses a

rotary spray cleaning method

with independent rinsing

and high-pressure air drying.

It takes around two to four

minutes of cleaning time and

one to two minutes of rinsing.

Meanwhile, the SM-8200

Double tank pneumatic

stencil cleaner and SM-8100

Pneumatic Stencil Cleaning

Machine make use of the

rotary double side pressure

injection and high-pressure air

spraying to clean and dry the

PCB.

Another notable type is the

SM-8150 Water-based Stencil

Cleaning Machine, which

features a left-right moving

high-pressure liquid spray

cleaning and a high-pressure

hot air drying method.

NuPon Dust Collector

Products

The Ataru Dust Collector

features an internal circulating

water cooling system that uses

distilled water. It also has a

YAG Laser with a wavelength

of 1064/532nm. The compact

Low-pressure dust collectors

CKU Series, on the other hand,

is for collecting particulates. It

is very compact and can easily

adapt to any environment,

including narrow spaces.

Even though there is still much to learn about COVID-19, scientists

discovered that the coronavirus can easily spread and can be

transferred from one person to another via air. Based on studies, this

contagious disease can be transmitted when an infected individual

sneezes, coughs, or even talks – actions in which coronavirus particles that

are contained in respiratory droplets can be released, either within saliva or

mucus. If people nearby inhale these droplets, they will automatically acquire

coronavirus and infect more people without them knowing about it.

Additionally, if these droplets land on surfaces like tables, doors, and

anything the infected person touches, it may also result in infection. Because

of these findings, local governments issued some guidelines to follow when

in public, such as wearing masks and observing physical distancing–

commonly by six feet away. Meanwhile, at home, it is highly recommended to

always clean the surrounding, especially the floor, doorknobs, windows, and

other surfaces.

But, the idea that tiny coronavirus particles, which are

described to be around 0.1 microns in size, are airborne

and can travel farther remains a question. While heavy

droplets, of approximately five to ten microns, typically

move around one meter before landing, smaller droplets

are believed to evaporate and let virus particles, called

aerosols, remain in the air.

According to a recent study, coronavirus is likely to live

for three hours after it has been discharged. The World

Health Organization (WHO) initially announced that

coronavirus could not be airborne, however, 293 scientists

with their latest studies show the other way around and

asked WHO to reconsider that possibility. Because of this,

WHO guidelines now include COVID-19 being transmitted

even indoors, especially for individuals who remained in

crowded and poorly ventilated places for long hours.

With the thought that coronavirus can be transferred via

28

air, it would be best to enhance ventilation and airflow

indoors. This involves optimizing the air quality through

changing the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning

systems in buildings, or by establishing physical

modifications to create better airflows.

Based on the findings of the 2004 Severe Acute

Respiratory Syndrome, viruses can easily spread across

rooms with HVAC systems, especially when it is turned

on a high-speed level. And so, considering upgrades

or HVAC-setting changes and adjustments may help in

managing the airflow.

One of the common ways and the most effective approach

done for HVAC systems is filtration. These systems have

ozone generators, ionic purifiers, and other components

that can clean the air. With the help of filters, large

particles are trapped in their tangled fibers, making the

incoming air safe to inhale.

There are various mechanical filters and they

have different ratings. In the United States,

organizations rate air filters with efficiency on

filtering specific particle sizes as the basis. After

careful observations, High-Efficiency Particulate

Air (HEPA) filters are the most effective ones at

clearing small particles, while Minimum Efficiency

Reporting Value (MERV) filters can remove large

particles. But MERV filters with 17 ratings or higher

are like that of HEPA filters. But since most homes

and commercial buildings have air-conditioning

systems that have MERV 12 rating or lower, it is a

must for these filters to be configured properly and

replaced regularly.

While HEPA filters can filter small particles, by

0.1 microns like coronavirus, according to NASA

study, US ratings show that such filters are only

for 0.3 microns. Thus, more research is needed

to determine what minimum filtration rating is

effective in removing COVID-19 particles from the

air.

Besides filtration, airflow management is also

proven to help reduce transmission indoors.

Recently, the World Health Organization confirmed

that in-room transmission is alarming based on

some evidence and situations, like that of an

asymptomatic person transmitting the virus to

several people in a certain restaurant due to the

strong airflow from an air conditioner.

One of the best methods is changing the airflow

patterns that are like that of laminar vertical

airflow. Given this, new establishments must have

an ample number of air outlets, while in existing

buildings, technicians should determine the airflow

through rooms before installing or upgrading the

HVAC systems.

Other solutions include installing air curtains

or air gates at doors, creating overpressure

above suspended ceilings, and upgrading the

suspended-ceiling materials.

Haier Thailand sees sales up 29 percent

on product differentiation strategy

Haier Thailand, an arm of Chinese home appliance

giant Haier Group, saw its sales in the first fourth

months of this year increase 29 percent year on

year, thanks to its product differentiation strategy.

To be specific, sales of its air-conditioning products during

the period increased by 38 percent, the highest growth

rate among all Chinese appliance brands in Thailand.

Zhang Zhenghui, president of Haier Thailand Sales,

attributed Haier’s success in Thailand to its localized

marketing, active communication with users, and product

differentiation strategy.

He said that the self-purifying air conditioner is a model

for Haier to create differentiated products based on local

conditions. The sales volume of the product in 2018

amounted to 30,000 units, and the company is expected

to sell 100,000 units this year.

48

At present, the annual production capacity of Haier’s

white goods in Thailand has been 1.5 million units and 40

percent of its products are sold locally, while the remaining

60 percent are exported to Europe, Macao, South America

and the Middle East.

Haier has been in the Thai market since 2002 and it took

over a plant from Sanyo Electric in 2007, turning it into

the largest white goods base, integrating manufacturing,

R&D and sales in Southeast Asia. Since 2016, Haier has

achieved rapid growth and sustainable development of its

business in Thailand.

While making rapid progress in business, Haier Thailand

has paid much attention to public welfare undertakings.

Recently, Haier Thailand organized a marathon in Bangkok

and donated the registration fees worth more than 200,000

baht (about 6,200 U.S. dollars) to a foundation focusing

children’s heart surgery.

for Humanity

Carrier will provide 21 high-efficiency home comfort systems for Nashville-area project

Building on a two decade legacy of support for Habitat for Humanity, Carrier will once

again participate in Habitat for Humanity’s Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. Each

year, hundreds of volunteers and future homeowners help build a housing community

alongside the former President and Mrs. Carter. This year, the Carter Work Project

is being held October 6-11 and will construct 21 affordable homes in the north Nashville

neighborhood of Park Preserve. Carrier, a provider of high-technology heating, air-conditioning

and refrigeration solutions, is a part of Carrier, a global provider of innovative heating, ventilating

and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, fire, security and building automation technologies.

Carrier is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

To support the project, Carrier will donate an Infinity® 16 heat pump system to each Carter Work

Project Home, which will provide energy-efficient cooling and heating. The system will be paired

with an Infinity® control, allowing for even greater potential energy savings with features like

advanced smart setback, Touch-N-Go® program adjustments, and energy use tracking.

“We’ve been working with Habitat for Humanity for more than two decades, and we’re pleased to

continue that legacy of support by providing home comfort systems for the Carter Work Project

again this year,” said Matthew Pine, president, Residential HVAC, Carrier. “Habitat for Humanity

Future Engineer’s Perspective of Racial

Equality, Gender Diversity and Social Justice

Never before has building a next

generation workforce, equipped

with the right skills and the right

tools for success been so critical.

As the world emerges from lockdown and

racism, businesses, governments and

citizens will have to adapt to changes in

the way we work, live and play.

How do we ensure that the the

engineering workforce is, in turn,

educated about racial equality and

trained to provide the expectations of the

‘new customer’? A company who has

deep values on social issues is one of the

vital success in delivering a world-class

customer-orientated service. Whether

in utilities, power, water, manufacturing,

renewables or construction, a valuedriven

workforce is a driving force.

Whilst utilising the latest technology

and innovations plays into the user

experience, so too does the human

element of those delivering these frontline

services. In short, we need an excellent

engineering workforce to deliver an

excellent citizen service with deep

understanding of diversity, equality and

values.

Engineers have a huge part to

play.

What we are seeing (protests around

the world) is the emergence of a new

workforce, not only that has to adapt to

the new needs and wants of its country’s

citizens but with deep understanding

of social justice. It is this workforce that

presents a clear opportunity to accelerate

their careers, and support minorities and

thrive in the country that their families

have 56 lived and grown up in.

Promoting racial equality & gender diversity

The visions of the leading Asian nations outline the important role that women and minorities

are playing when it comes to delivering against their ambitions. Therefore supporting gender

diversity and racial equality is key, and the private sector has an important role to deliver back to

governments a fully skilled, racially equally ambitious and gender diverse engineering workforce.

Being prepared for the challenges that our society will face requires knowledge of future skills

among the workforce of every engineers. Despite the challenges that the regional and global

economies will be bracing for in the months ahead, we should not be deterred from our mission.

A new generation of engineers is ready to make an impact in the private sector by serving their

countries; our priority is to play our role in helping to bring that into fruition. Ultimately, to do this,

in a world of automation, robotics and other innovative forms of technology that will transform our

society, we must adopt a growth mindset.

Equipping engineers with the right skills and principles

Whilst the DNA of what makes a great employee will still remain (excellent work ethic, positive

attitude, fostering racial equality values and skills related to the specific role), in this post-COVID

world, the talent that will thrive are those who have built up new skills along the way. Now more

than ever there is a focus on communication. Ensuring that we build a future national workforce

that has the right skills to communicate effectively across the board is key – from face to face,

incorporating new normals of social distancing and face masks, through to sophisticated use of

available technology to communicate with people remotely. This is especially important with the

fundamental makeup of the workforce changing. Virtual working environments will become more

prevalent than ever before, so having a level of discipline, motivation and the ability to navigate

and manage workloads effectively in a remote environment is also vital. Simultaneously, there

is a need to deliver efficiently and effectively, and on time – because citizens will be no less

demanding (or even more post COVID-19) when it comes to their expectations for service.

The pandemic has also taught us the need evolve and to embrace change in order to thrive.

It has instilled in us a need to adapt to changing circumstances, and this in turn helps us find

solutions to problems by putting the user front and centre of everything and thinking differently.

We should not underestimate the opportunity this provides us to build a workforce whose

founding principles are based on innovating and adapting to the new needs and wants of its

customers or citizens (in respect of government services).

The important role that technology plays also highlights the need for a tech-savvy, digital ready

future workforce. Robotics and AI are innovating how we live, work and play and employees need

to align to that mindset, because this plays a significant role in automation and really enhancing

the overall citizen experience. It is not about replacing humans with robots, the workforce of the

future needs to be ready to take on the opportunity that technology represents to bring about

efficiencies, drive innovations and improve citizens’ experience as they interact with governments

and associated services.

60

Public and private sector working

hand in hand

So the engineering talent of the immediate

tomorrow will have a direct impact on

the delivery of the racial equality citizen

experience.

Sad to say that the federal government

of USA is solely focusing on dispersing

peaceful protests, they should be making

efficiencies, policies and life savings.

It is the duty of the private sector to support

government when it has a true vision when

it comes to developing the skills and values

of engineers and scientists. This in turn

supports the growth of the economy and

fostering racial equality that leads to social

justice.

But it’s not just about the pandemic or protests, a focus on engineers’ skills and technical knowhow

is very much embedded in the core DNA of our culture and it is a key component of our

strategy. The pandemic and social unrest has only made it all the more obvious that we need to

have a value-driven purpose and right skillset that is able to deliver to international principledcentered

leadership. By doing so, we can provide our future engineers and scientists with the

right training and soft skills so that they are moved into leadership and management roles, that

is socially just, equal and fair. This is where they can focus on the future and manage the moral

transformation that we are going through, just like the rest of the world.

Racial Equality at School

Engineering companies should be knocking at the doors of the biggest regional universities so that

all of us can start our assessments, to recruit and find the brightest talent that we can support on

their career journey of tomorrow. To that end, we are already looking forward to welcoming a new

cadre of graduates and fully aware of of what racial equality and social justice.

As a multinational organisation, you must be committed to ensuring that engineering talent is

equipped with robust training programmes delivered to international standards, and that key skills

are learnt and underpinned by the right mentorship to enable those to thrive.

How to Help your Children Thrive with

Remote Schooling During COVID-19

Lockdown

As a result of the current situation,

families are facing extended periods

of social distancing. To help families

enjoy their time together, here’s a guide

for parents on how to help their children thrive

at remote schooling and tips on how to engage

children effectively.

There is a huge difference between elective

‘homeschooling’ and adapting to it very

unexpectedly, but there many ways families can

balance multiple children’s workloads whilst

considering each child’s individual needs and

keeping on top of learning schedules. During this

time, it is important to recognise that this is an

abnormal situation to be in, so be kind to yourself

and look at the positives in every situation.

TALK ABOUT IT

Children easily pick up on conversations and

uncertainty parents might be experiencing. As

a result, this can lead to changes in a child’s

behaviour, schooling and overall wellbeing. It is

important to regulate the content that is seen on

the news and discussed during phone conversations

with friends and family.

Try to take those conversations away from children

to help reduce unnecessary worry. Talk to children

about any fears or worries they might have and

validate their feelings by addressing any questions

that come up. During this time especially, it is

important to create an honest and calm space for

children to address concerns.

TRY TO STICK TO A ROUTINE

Before any routine, it is important to take a step

back and consider how easy it will be to stick to.

Keeping a normal consistent routine for young

children can be a stress reliever. To ensure a

sense of normality for children, plan a routine

that mimics a normal day at school or nursery

by incorporating playtime, arts and crafts, fun

activities that involve other family members and

reading. When planning a schedule, it is important

to remember that things do not always go to plan,

so try not to live by the clock and be flexible to

adapt to changes when needed.

68

An example of a routine for a toddler:

• 7am – Ensure children wake up at the same time

each day

• 7.30am – Breakfast

• 8am – Teeth brushed, get dressed

• 8.30am – Playtime, fun planned active activity

for balance & coordination

• 10.30am – Healthy morning snack

• 11am – Messy play (painting, crafts, getting

creative)

• 12pm – Healthy lunch

• 12.30pm – Naptime

• 2.30pm – Healthy afternoon snack

• 3pm – Music time

• 6pm – Bath time, teeth brushed

• 6.30pm - Storytime

• 7pm – Bedtime (sticking to bedtime routines can

help reduce bedtime battles, and help toddlers fall

asleep easier and stay asleep for longer periods)

WHAT IF MY CHILD FALLS BEHIND?

Planning is a blessing for many parents, and

setting and sticking to short term, realistic and

achievable goals creates a calmer household. At the

same time, it is important not to get overwhelmed

by the thought that your child may fall behind.

You can do some trials and ask an expert to find

the right balance and the suitable environment

that will improve you child’s skills.

If your child is not adapting to a set period of

online learning, then adapt to spreading the work

little and often across the day. It is important to

recognise that this period is also a huge transition

for children to adapt to as well. Children may also

be facing anxieties, so it is important to not add to

them by setting overly high expectations during

this abnormal situation.

Tips for working parents homeschooling

their children:

• Do as much housework as possible before

children wake up

• Planning meals at the weekend for the week

ahead and prepping as much as possible helps

alleviate meal stress and tantrums which will hurt

your health and the people around you.

• Talk to the children about the need for their

support and discuss the weekly plans with them

to get everyone involved and on board before the

week begins

• Have a schedule for the week where children and

family members can video call friends and family,

giving everyone something to look forward to

• Take some time after putting the kids to bed to

prepare for their learning the next day and reduce

the stress of trying to find the required resources

and documents just before lessons

• If the week is not going to plan, be prepared to

adapt the working schedule around the children

and if need be, catch up at a time when things

have calmed down, or in the evening

• Advise children in advance of important work

calls so that everyone can respect the need to be

quiet during this time

Children represent the future. Encourage, support

and guide them.

How to Properly Clean and Sanitize Your

Homemade Face Mask

With face masks becoming

mandatory in several countries, it is

important to ensure you keep your

mask clean, in order to maximize its

effectiveness.

Since we need to wear face masks to slow the

spread of COVID-19, people have taken it as a

normal part of life, but there are just a handful

who know how to keep them clean. The dos

and don’ts of maintaining hygiene, especially

when it comes to face masks, is of utmost

importance.

Using the same cloth mask daily without

cleaning it will not shield you from the virus and

may actually have the opposite effect.

Here are six key tips for maintaining the

effectiveness of your face masks:

How often do you need to wash your

face mask?

Your face mask should be washed regularly.

We cannot stress on that enough. The virus

may stay active on fabric for a long period of

time, which makes it absolutely necessary to

wash your face mask at least once a day. If

you suspect that someone you have been in

close contact with is infected, you should put

the mask to wash immediately and use a fresh

one. Apart from the virus, the masks also tend

to collect any sweat, oil or makeup from skin,

which may also affect your health.

72

What fabric is suitable for a face

mask?

Cotton fabric is the perfect material for a face

mask. With an ideal thread count of about 200

with up to three layers of fabric, this material

is effective in filtering out the virus as well as

blocking any pathogens from entering. With the

strict protocol of wearing the face mask while

on the move, it is essential to be comfortable

with your face mask and the cotton fabric

provides the right amount of breathability. It is

also recommended to use white color masks

that can be washed in higher temperatures.

How should you handle your face mask after

use?

Upon returning home, we recommend that

the first thing you do is take off your mask

carefully and place it in the laundry bin until

you can wash it. You may opt to leave it in the

bin for 24 hours or more in quarantine, which is

known to allow the virus to decay. Do not let the

mask come into contact with any other family

member.

How can you disinfect cloth masks?

A machine wash at a high temperature with

quality detergents is good enough to kill the

virus. However, if you want to avoid running a

machine load just for a single mask, you can

also toss in your clothing items that you wore

to step-out as well. If you prefer to hand-wash

your mask, ensure that you get into every inch

of the mask and clean it using the correct

amount of chemical. Additionally, soaking the

mask in hot water for 10-minutes and then

rinsing it thoroughly, will also help to remove all

the pathogens. Avoid using bleach completely

as the constant smell can cause nausea and

headaches.

What is the appropriate temperature to

wash a face mask?

Viruses cannot withstand high temperatures,

therefore, washing face masks at a temperature

of more than 60 degrees help disinfect the

mask. Since fabrics with dark colors fade after

a couple of washed at high temperatures, it is

advisable to make or buy the fabric mask in

lighter shades.

How should a face mask be dried?

After washing your mask, it is best to dry it at a

high temperature since heat also sanitizes the

mask. For masks with a plastic filter and valve,

you will need to be extra careful and air-dry or

sun-dry them. A hairdryer can also be used as

an easy and effective dryer. Sunlight is another

excellent natural sanitizing agent. Since the

starting temperature of an average household

iron is 140 degrees Celsius, ironing the mask

post-drying will provide an added measure to

ensure that the virus is completely eliminated.

Uncertainty is the key challenge facing business

leaders according to new cross-sector survey

• International law firm

Pinsent Masons interviewed

business leaders from across

Energy, Financial Services,

Infrastructure, Real Estate and

Technology sectors operating

in the UAE.

• Survey reveals, that the

key challenges perceived

by business leaders relates

to ambiguous regulations,

foreign ownership restrictions

and employment, particularly

the hiring of top talent.

• Covid-19 pandemic is

likely to magnify uncertainty

around how best to navigate

regulations to ensure business

continuity.However, Pinsent

Masons advises that having a

flexible regulatory framework

can also encourage innovation

and creativity – which is

crucial for success.

• According to Pinsent

Masons, having an agile

strategy and expert counsel

is key to taking advantage

of UAE’s unique business

opportunities – even during

these unprecedented times

Uncertainty due to ambiguous

laws has been identified as

the top regulatory challenge

facing business leaders in

the UAE – that’s according to

a new report “The Making of

an Investment Powerhouse:

The Future of the UAE’s

Regulatory Framework” by

international law firm Pinsent

76

Masons. The study combines

the results of a cross-sector

survey, conducted prior to

the Covid-19 pandemic,

with in-depth, one-to-one

interviews with leading experts

from the energy, financial

services, infrastructure,

real estate and technology

sectors to better understand

perceived barriers to success

in the market. Although a

number of sector-specific

issues were highlighted in

the report, 40 per cent of

those surveyed stated that

ambiguous laws present their

number one challenge. The

other two barriers identified

in the study are foreign

ownership restrictions (39%)

and employment laws. –

particularly the hiring of top

talent (29%). The report aims

to analyse the evolution of

the UAE’s legal framework

across the key industries

that have been instrumental

to the nation’s growth and

offer expert counsel on how

businesses can navigate

existing challenges and take

full advantage of the bountiful

opportunities that exist in this

market.

Catherine Workman, Head of

Pinsent Masons Middle East

Region, commented: “The

UAE’s business landscape

has evolved over the past

decade at tremendous speed

and although this has brought

with it immense opportunities,

certain challenges have of

course been borne from such

rapid progression. In light of

the Covid-19 pandemic, we

are now in unprecedented

times, and that will no doubt

lead to further uncertainty from

a regulatory and business

perspective. We hope that

this report will help to instigate

important conversations

about how the UAE

business community and the

Government can work together

to ensure that they UAE builds

upon its unique business

proposition. We advise

clients to maintain a constant

dialogue with other industry

stakeholders and decision

makers. The regulatory

framework is not set in stone

and ensuring that your voice is

heard can make the difference

between a project doomed

to fail and one that will strive

and expand across borders.

Regulatory frameworks are

not only for the purposes of

compliance, but are used as

a competitive advantage by

governments. Businesses

should devise and implement

flexible strategies that will align

with, or be easily adaptable

to, future regulations. Pinsent

Masons is deeply committed

to working with businesses

to understand how to best

navigate these identified

challenges and succeed

during this incredibly turbulent

period and the uncertain times

that are yet to come.”

Although ambiguous

regulations can provide

uncertainty for businesses,

Pinsent Masons recommends

that businesses develop

a collaborative and agile

strategy that can be quickly

amended if new regulations

are introduced. In sectors

such as technology,

uncertainty can actually be

an advantage as it enables

companies to think creatively

and provides the flexibility to

innovate and expand quickly –

which can be tricky in markets

that are heavily regulated.

Whilst some of the challenges

identified in the report are

certainly unique to the UAE

and the Middle East, many are

caused by globalisation effect

on the business environment.

The report reveals the different

levels of support required by

each sector.

• 44% of energy sector

participants found the

regulations especially

challenging; compared to

only 11% in the infrastructure

sector.

• 78% of those surveyed in the

infrastructure sector revealed

hiring top talent as their key

challenge.
