YOU CAN BE
BORN BEAUTIFUL,
zA
BUT TO
STAY BEAUTIFUL
REQUIRES
SOME MAINTENANCE.
To keep a house working properly,
you have to take care of it. This can be time consuming for a homeowner, but with KVC360, you don’t have to do a thing.
After a 200-point inspection, we create a seasonal maintenance plan for your home and property.
This ensures everything will be taken care of before it even becomes a problem. And if something should go wrong,
you don’t have to get out the creaky ladder, you just have to pick up the phone.
is the Only Word for 7 Tide
Designing the home of your dreams just got simpler. At 7 Tide
in Boston’s Seaport District, you can now envision how every
single important detail will come together. 7 Tide houses the
most technologically advanced Clarke Showroom and Test
Kitchen, as well as the country’s fi rst Marvin Windows and
Doors Experience Center.
“The best time to visit 7 Tide is when you fi rst begin
planning,” said Jeremy McCulla, showroom manager for Clarke
Appliances. “People will visit us and say, ‘I had no idea there
were so many incredible options.’ ”
Downtown Boston’s First Sub-Zero & Wolf
Showroom and Test Kitchen
Homeowners and design professionals will fi nd the latest
from Sub-Zero, Wolf and ASKO at the Clarke Showroom.
In addition to offering their signature Test Drives, where
homeowners cook on the appliances and taste the results,
Clarke has built its fi rst Media Lounge at 7 Tide. Here, design
professionals can present fl oorplans, renderings and more to
clients on a 16’ x 9’ media wall. Homeowners then explore
their appliance options in full-sized kitchens just steps away.
The Country’s First Marvin Windows and Doors
Experience Center
In a high-touch, high-tech delight, homeowners are introduced
to a whole new way of thinking about windows and doors.
Imagine touch screens, a smart table where visitors design
their own windows and doors and a projection wall that allows
you to instantly experience every option in true scale. Marvin
at 7 Tide is a game-changer when designing a home.
“We ask visitors to describe the feeling they want to have
in their home,” said Marvin Brand Representative Barbara
Bradlee. “We talk about the quality of light, the homeowner’s
lifestyle, and more.”
Since these spaces are dedicated to personal experiences
and knowledge sharing, homeowners learn how to purchase
products later at authorized dealers. One recent visitor
commented, “7 Tide isn’t a sales experience. It’s relaxing, and I
loved planning my home this way.”
While drop-in visitors are welcome, an appointment is
recommended to get the full 7 Tide Experience. For more
information and to plan your visit, see SevenTide.com

FROM THE PUBLISHER
I didn’t realize when BDG’s “team shot” was taken for the publication
this year in front of the Grist Mill at the Wayside Inn in Sudbury, just
a mile from our office, that it would provide the impetus for my
publisher’s page. As we stood on the site’s hallowed ground, we
collectively thought about how the inn has seen good times and bad
during the course of its 300-year history and reflected on where we
have been, and where we are going. In an ever-changing world, it is
more important than ever for us to come together and celebrate years
and years of tradition, and how our faith in this great country endures.
After the photo shoot, we headed down the road to the historic inn
and toasted Boston Design Guide’s 21st edition. We later toured
the colonial landmark, where Longfellow, poets, artists, captains of
industry and past presidents have shared experiences over a common meal, and we marveled at
the simplicity of this home away from home. It all became clear: Isn’t this what we all want? A place
where friends and family gather to enjoy a meal, reflect on the day’s journey and find comfort?
There is no better way to express who you are than to invite someone into your home. Nothing
brings me more contentment than lighting a fire in my dining room’s 18th-century stone fireplace
and enjoying a home-cooked meal with family and friends. What is your preference when given
the choice to “entertain in or out?” I believe the future is staying in, even if that means bringing in
takeout. Maybe that is why our investments are often a new kitchen, an expanded family room, an
outdoor living area or a beautiful second home for friends and family to gather.
As you read this, it’s likely you’re seated in your favorite chair in a setting you love, and I hope you
are. Sit back, relax and become inspired! As you page through, remember, it is your unique style
that turns a house into a home, a safe haven. How blessed we are to live in a country where we can
enjoy the many comforts that only freedom can bring.
Cheers!
The top home design professionals all in one place. Tips, trends, inspirations, events and more!
I was recently searching online for a new coffee table for my apartment when
I found myself overwhelmed. There were so many choices, companies, offers,
reviews, and more. On top of that, I couldn’t define what was of good quality
and style. The width of the web is so wide that there is no filter. It is nearly
impossible to break through to find what you want without being influenced by
biased opinions and targeted advertisements.
While the way we shop, hire and get inspired has changed with technology,
our definition of the home has not. We don’t want more, we want what’s right
for us - what’s unique, authentic and meaningful. It’s having informed choices
and purchases from reliable sources so you can decide what is best for your
lifestyle and taste.
Sometimes we put our phones down to disconnect and other times we pick them up to connect. On BDG’s
website and social media accounts, we select the top home resources to bring to you daily - so you don’t
have to search through all the results online to find the best of the best. From seasonal trends, to designer tips
and industry events, we carefully curate our online presence to reflect the quality and reputable work of the
professionals we represent. Like the beautiful pages of this magazine, our online content is presented with
simplicity in a direct way to our viewers each day. So whether you’re looking to connect with other industry
professionals, hire for your next project or just get inspired, look to BDG online as your go-to resource.
Interior designer Anthony Catalfano creates a lavish, exotic lair
30
"Mixing colors, metal finishes, mixing textiles. I think that's
the important factor here. Anything goes."
- Anthony Catalfano
31

32

Trust is a beautiful thing. When auto scion, world
traveler and culture seeker Ernie Boch, Jr. sought
to channel a faraway land in an entertaining space
on the top floor of his carriage house, he enlisted
designer Anthony Catalfano of Anthony Catalfano
Interiors, Inc. to weave magic. After they chose an
Indian theme, Catalfano was given the freedom
to create a luxurious den brimming with “hot and
spicy colors” like persimmon, henna and magenta,
warm metals and imported carvings, panels and
antiques from India.
Catalfano was granted an interior designer’s
dream, and the exquisite jewel-toned lounge
reveals the wild imagination of client and designer.
Access is gained via a wood stair with a balustrade
saturated with the hues of the realm inside. A stone
tile floor embossed with 24K gold leaf awaits, as
does a happy Buddha surrounded by incense. The
main room unfolds as a series of intimate loungestyle
spaces surrounding a central carved walnut
antique bar, as driven by the architecture of Greg
Colling of Merrimack Design. The space, built by
Vona Construction, maximizes rooflines and is
punctuated by alcoves with built-in banquettes.
Surfaces were given further depth by the hand of
a decorative artist who emboldened select panels
with color.
As “it’s all about textures and fabrics in India,”
explains Catalfano, he piled on layers of plush,
tactile weaves. Portiere draperies hang like saris
from doorways, silk rugs, handcrafted to look
like Bengal tigers, have an imperial look atop
a walnut herringbone floor, metallic gold textured
wallpaper sparkles come nightfall and plumes dyed
the shade of paprika fan out from wooden vessels.
The furnishings, all designed by Catalfano, are cozy
and rich. Seating, bedecked in velvet upholstery by
Oscar de la Renta, is interactive and swivels to invite
conversation. Static elements are equally striking,
like the barstools crowned by Indian-style peaks or
the twin cocktail tables swathed in brown crocodile
leather painted a fiery orange underneath.
A meditation room, drenched in turquoise and
laden with floor pillows and throws, completes the
experience. Designed as a destination, Catalfano
and the architect exaggerated the entryway, using
a series of carved doors from India resized for the
space. The portal is an emblem of the overall design
philosophy. Says Catalfano, “We wanted you to
enter the space and not know where you were. We
wanted to create a reality.” ¨
CBT is a Boston-based professional design firm providing
services in architecture, interior design and urban design.
Over 175 awards recognize excellence and creativity in
our design of new buildings and the renovation of existing
structures.
Designing a private home requires an ability to shape forms
and spaces that truly respond to personal requirements and
aspirations. It demands a special kind of insight to understand
those private visions. We enjoy the process. Our clients
present their ideas, wishes, and needs and we translate them
into structures, spaces, and environments that express those
personal visions.
BREAKING GROUND
Sarah Lawson has always had “a love for houses and
design,” as well as an appreciation for the technical side
of building. When her own home was being renovated,
she fancied herself the general contractor (which, she
adds, is hysterical in retrospect). It was enough, however,
to propel her into the world of construction, and “she
never looked back.” Lawson had her own construction
company before joining S+H Construction, which she
later bought from founders Doug Hanna and Alex Silve.
At S+H, Lawson was able to take her abilities to a higher
level faster. “They’re doing incredibly sophisticated,
beautiful things.”
Allison Iantosca joined F.H. Perry Builder almost
20 years ago when her father, Finley Perry, invited her
into the company. Immediately, Iantosca developed relationships
with architects and designers, and brought the
added service of accompanying clients to showrooms. In
this role, she developed both contacts and a context and
today she’s president and owner of the company. Her
father always “pushed my strengths and interests,” says
Iantosca, a legacy she continues with her team. She firmly
believes that success, as well as a beautiful end product,
arrives when people are growing, connected and performing
at their optimal level.
Eleni Kaplan, a third generation
builder, learned firsthand the value
of attention to detail and treating
clients like family. After graduating
from college in 2013 she worked for
her father’s company, Sanford Custom
Builders. In 2016 she launched
her own business, E.K. Sanford
Builders. Eleni reasoned that since
both her father and grandfather had
their own construction companies,
now it was her turn. One to watch,
Kaplan just sold her first spec house
and was recently hired to build a
custom home in Sudbury, MA.
BDG SALUTES
SIX SUCCESSFUL
WOMEN
IN CONSTRUCTION
Renée West was the first woman
that Kistler & Knapp Builders ever
hired and today, alongside Douglas
Stevenson, she’s running the show.
With a background in insurance, West
initially came for a one-year stint to
help the company through a growth
spurt. Twenty-five years later, she’s a
principal, and the “glue” of her staff.
She calls her employees “my guys”
and knows that, as the faces on the
jobsite, if they’re happy, clients are
happy. She believes Kistler & Knapp
is known for its collaborative mindset
and team mentality.
Kate Durrane is “a born-and-bred Boston girl”
who knows the city like the back of her hand. She also
knows carpentry and has worked for her father, founder
Arthur Massaro of Columbia Contracting Corp., in some
capacity since 2000. Today, Durrane is Director of
Operations of their “true family business” that specializes
in large-scale renovations and new custom homes. But
she wasn’t just handed the position; Durrane has done
framing, trim and siding, and has a certificate from Wentworth
Institute. She loves every phase of the construction
process and “seeing a hole in the ground become a
finished product.”
Cara Meneses, partner of ARCHWRIGHT | Fine
Home Builders, bought her first home at age 25 and
renovated 80 percent of it. The daughter of a Cape Cod
builder hails from a family of entrepreneurs, so it’s not
surprising that, after working for years as lead project
manager on Cape Cod’s finest new coastal constructions,
she’d strike out on her own. Blessed with an analytical
and aesthetic mind, Meneses prizes the build process and
client-builder relationships, as well as the end result. She
and co-owner Brian Lafauce are passionate about building
custom homes that will “better people’s lives.”
What we can’t
show you in a picture...
A picture does not show you the process we undergo with our clients
when building their dream home, from the beginning of planning to
the very last decision. It does not show the quality of craftsmanship
behind the surface that stands up to real life. It’s impossible to show the
lives that are lived in the homes we build or the relationships formed
in that process. We wish it could show our company’s founders at the
jobsite daily until the job is done. Most importantly, it cannot capture
our lifetime commitment to you, your family, and your home.
We would love an opportunity to show you our process firsthand.
VISION ACCOMPLISHED
Forty years spent building and renovating homes for people brings a lot of satisfaction. And, a
lot of knowledge. It means F.H. Perry Builder knows the ins and outs of working in nearly every
Boston neighborhood as well as those surrounding them. It also means they’ve learned how to
successfully manage traffic flow to allow for construction deliveries down a charmingly narrow,
one-way street in Cambridge, or the nuanced differences in pulling permits from Beacon Hill to
the strictest suburban historic district. It has bred in them a deep respect for the time-tested
residences they’ve restored in Weston, Wellesley, Newton and Brookline and the know-how to
build others to join their ranks.
F.H. Perry Builder exists today because of family and thrives because it treats all of its craft based
projects with the values it was founded upon. No matter how you define your “family” F. H. Perry
Builder believes it takes humanity, adaptability, empathy, transparency, and integrity to build
sophisticated projects for the sophisticated people who live in them.
Known as the builder that those in the trade and homeowners alike can count on to deliver their
vision, F.H. Perry helps homeowners move projects from a dream to a reality. Vision Accomplished.
Thoughtful, refined moments of
beauty enrich this family’s life
When a former client acquired a summer home on Cape Cod they once again
called upon Sally Wilson, who in less than 5 months transformed the home into
a lighthearted retreat, where their family of six plus extended family and friends
could spend lazy summer days creating lasting memories.
The “Big Reveal” was a memorable day for both client and designer. Exclamations
of surprise and delight were followed by a simple statement from the homeowner,
“Sally, I know this sounds so cliché, but you nailed it! Just absolutely nailed it!”
This is just one of Wilson Kelsey Design’s many success stories. Grounded in the
fundamentals of classical design, the firm is celebrated for creating homes that
convey timeless beauty and harmony.
John Kelsey and Sally Wilson love what they do, and their clients love where they live.
“An interior designer
should save you money,
and we can prove that.”
For principal Rose Ann Humphrey of the interior design firm Home Life, the tagline
“Love How You Live!” is more than a catchphrase, it’s a deep-seated philosophy.
When working with Home Life, clients not only receive design expertise culled from years
in the business—the richest paint to use, the optimal scale for that coffee table, the perfect
weave or shade of textile, the overarching composition—they are granted access to a world
of materials crafted by dedicated professionals and artisans in the trade that far exceeds
the inventory of the retail industry. Clients also receive—and this may be surprising—prices
below retail. “The homeowner gets exactly what they want,” says Humphrey. They aren’t left
with a purchase that isn’t quite right simply because that was what was available to them.
For Humphrey, finished settings are a product of trust and of cultivated personal relationships.
Interiors are carefully curated to reflect the aesthetic and eccentricities of an individual.
Surrounded by what delights, calms and charms, Humphrey creates settings to let you
“Love How You Live!”.

PROfi l e
The “Golden Age of Billiards” lasted from the 1860’s until the Great Depression. During this
period, a billiard table was not simply a game table, it was a piece of furniture of the highest
caliber. These tables were made by the fi nest artisans, using rare woods from all over the world.
Since 1975, Boston Billiard Emporium has been New England’s leading conservator of
antique billiard tables. Owner Stephen Kelly combines his love of antiques with the painstaking
craftsmanship required to bring the exquisite billiard tables of a bygone era back to their
original grandeur.
Their tables have been featured in books, movies and magazines, as well as on NECN’s
“Dream Home” and PBS’ “This Old House”. Many of New England’s interior designers as well
as architects have planned their client’s billiard room around a billiard table and accessories
purchased from Boston Billiards.
New pool tables are also available at Boston Billiard Emporium. These tables can be
customized by selecting the species of wood, color of stain, cloth and pockets so that the table
works better in your space. You will also fi nd a great selection of accessories, as well as a fullservice
repairs department for anything that may go wrong with your table.
Sakonnet River rewrites history
bostondesignguide.com 135

Kirby Perkins Construction propped up the barn to pour the foundation
and added a garage underneath. The greenhouse is new and used to raise
plants from seeds to put out in the garden, which is fenced to keep rabbits
at bay. A mini orchard of apple trees yields a healthy amount of fruit.
bostondesignguide.com

A Queen Anne, Stick-style home along the Sakonnet River in Middletown, RI, once
belonged to noted Shakespearean actor Edwin Booth. Booth, billed as one of the finest
lead characters in the tragic play Hamlet, had commissioned famed architect Calvert Vaux
to build him a cottage along the water’s grassy banks, where, when he wasn’t at the theater,
he could take in the beauty of the setting and its filtered
views of the Atlantic. The summer enclave was inhabited
by other artists of the time who preferred its serenity to the
opulence and vanity fair of high-society Newport nearby.
The private nature of the retreat no doubt appealed to
Booth, given that by 1865 he’d be dogged by unwanted
fame, and more widely known for his role as brother to
Abraham Lincoln’s assassin Edwin Wilkes Booth than for his
compelling character portrayals.
The ‘good son’ only enjoyed “Boothden,” as it’s named,
for four years before it was willed to his daughter, Edwina,
and sold shortly thereafter. At the time it was built in 1883,
the home was a 40x40-foot structure set upon rolling,
estate-style lawns punctuated by a windmill folly by the
river’s edge. In the years since, Boothden has seen a series
of additions and renovations, each unrelated to the next,
which muddied Vaux’s original vision. Its most recent
incarnation, an ambitious collaboration by Andreozzi
Architects, Kirby Perkins Construction and LeBlanc Jones
Landscape Architects, resets the clock, returning the
residence to its historic grandeur even as it positions the
home in the here and now.
bostondesignguide.com 137

“The owners run the home like a free
inn for friends and family. Every room
is filled all summer long.”
— David Andreozzi, Andreozzi Architects
While Andreozzi Architects
designed the paneling of
the refrigerator to evoke an
old icebox, appliances are
anything but vintage. The
kitchen and pantry feature
Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances,
supplied by Clarke & Sub-Zero
Showroom, and an oversized
island allows three couples to
cook and prep comfortably.
138
bostondesignguide.com

At the project’s outset, a historian was enlisted to discern
what was original to the design and what wasn’t. Clear
additions from the 1940s and ’50s were removed and
a new plan was designed that “recreated the image of
what Calvert Vaux intended the house to be,” contends
architect David Andreozzi. As the home’s foundation had
deteriorated and needed replacing, the team, together
with Boothden’s current owners, took the opportunity to
reposition the home at an angle that maximizes its site and
views toward the ocean. They tailored the new location “to
how the new owners want to experience the environment,”
reveals Andreozzi Architects’ associate David Rizzolo, and
the experience they want for others. The residents share a
unique inner ethos; they love entertaining and welcome a
steady parade of visitors to their one-of-a-kind property all
summer long.
The way that Boothden mingles the old and new is a construction
tour de force. As the eave, bracketing, decorative
trim and shingle pattern on the exterior of the north end
of the home was intact, explain co-owner Tom Perkins and
project manager Randon Mendes of Kirby Perkins Construction,
the builder had to match up the many interesting
roof lines and mirror the facade’s intricacies on the additions.
The stone carving over the mantel pays
homage to the windmill of long ago.
The homeowner feared he’d notice where the old house
ends and the new begins. He needn’t have worried. While
the Kirby Perkins team knows exactly where that point is on
all three levels, inhabitants are blissfully unaware.
For the interiors, the client, an artist with a true eye for
design, cultivated a setting of peace and elegance that
hints at the formality of yesteryear yet captures the easy
spirit of today’s coastal homes. Andreozzi Architects
specified elaborate finish work and flourishes (what Perkins
calls “details on top of details”) that showcase the exacting
craftsmanship of Kirby Perkins Construction and Jutras
Woodworking. It’s the finer points that set the home apart:
the Stick-style beam ceiling lends a nautical flair to the
family room; museum-grade mahogany veneers line the
chart room; crowd-pleasing Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances
modernize the kitchen; handblown stained glass alights the
Left: The pool terrace is outfitted with an outdoor grill area,
pergola, and a cabana that has beach club-style snack bar
doors and a full kitchen. Below, the grade of the pool was sited
so that the gaze looks over the beautiful lawn and water. The
hardscape is surrounded by plantings that bloom in summer.
ceiling of the master bedroom; and a hand-carved stairway
adds drama to the dining room, creating a refined space
that “almost feels like a stage set,” says Andreozzi.
LeBlanc Jones Landscape Architects entered the scene
early to set the rotation and elevation of the house, and
select the grades for landscape features, including: a new
pool, spa and cabana; a barn-turned-artist studio and
greenhouse; a small orchard, and perennial and vegetable
gardens. There were also “a lot of existing conditions we
wanted to maintain,” explains principal Keith LeBlanc,
like the copper beech tree that greets you on arrival and
a waterside gazebo that “floats out on the lawn” on the
site of the earliest generations’ windmill. These exquisite
details were woven into the overall composition in an
“artful arrangement.”
As with the home itself, the landscape’s newer features,
like the gently graded slopes, laid stone retaining walls
and soft natural grasses along the riverbank are quietly
integrated among elements that have long been part of
the terrain. The gardens are beautiful but not obvious,
says LeBlanc, so as not to upstage the view. After all, the
vistas are the home’s marquee attraction, in years past and
for years to come. ¨
A couple had been searching for a site for a new home
for years, when they found an incredible natural setting
in Weston. The rugged but lush landscape, with forested
slopes and a massive ledge softened by bright green ferns
in season, held an instant appeal. But was it buildable?
LDa Architecture & Interiors and Dan Gordon Landscape
Architects were brought in to make that determination,
and, happily, answered with a collective “yes.”
The pair, who hailed from Munich and Rio de Janeiro,
intended to build a traditional home with an open interior
that would fit in here in New England. In fact, plans for a
traditional theme were well under way, explains principal
Michael Waters of LDa Architecture & Interiors, when the
client and architect shifted gears and “completely reset
the design of the home.” For them, a traditional home
would mean settling, and their love of modern design and
straight lines, cultivated while living in Switzerland for 15
years, prevailed.
Landscape architect Dan Gordon set about “creating a
landscape that works both with the natural context and the
clean lines of the contemporary architecture,” he shares,
and developed a design schematic that nestled the
striking, linear structure snugly in the slope.
The spectacular setting warranted an incredible home,
and LDa Architecture & Interiors answered with an open,
light-filled design that celebrates its connection to nature.
Floor-to-ceiling windows pervade, with many wrapping
around the corners of the house “to erode the sense of
boundary,” and give it an easy, amiable sensibility.
As the family opens their home to friends from all over the
world, the residence needed to be inviting. An oversized
front door swings open in an exaggerated welcome from
an entryway with “no sense of threshold,” says Waters,
while a stunning suspended stair, comprised of white
marble, oak, stainless steel and chrome, just beyond the
door, announces, “come on up.”
The homeowners, who have a keen appreciation for
aesthetic, “are about as close as you can get to a perfect
client in residential architecture,” contends Waters.
Simone, in fact, who has a background in finance, went
back to school to lean into her love of interior design
before selecting the mixed materials, finishes and
furnishings of this home with Portuguese design firm Sa,
Aranha and Vasconcelo.
I HAVE GREAT FAITH IN DESIGN AND IN A GREAT CLIENT.
The home has a palette of white,
gray, browns and natural colors
along with punches of color, like
the sofa upholstered in a lively
spring green.
This level of detail–and exuberance–meant that Denali
Construction Corp. had their work cut out for them. With
the modern style, “there’s no room for error,” says Principal
Jim DePaolo, but his team was up to the task. Crafting the
corner windows, recessed crown moldings, telescoping
doors, exterior cantilevers and that stair tower is difficult
work, but gratifying. His company has built this family their
“dream house,” and in the process, may very well have
made them New Englanders. Laughs Simone, “So many of
our friends wish they could stay on vacation forever. For us,
it’s the opposite. We love coming back home.” ¨
bostondesignguide.com 151

MY GUYS ARE TRUE FABRICATORS. Everything—casework, stainless, glass,
even the stairs—was fabricated on-site. We used the family, living room and den
as workshops. A homeowner can draw it on the wall and we can build it.
— Jim DePaolo, Principal of Denali Construction
152
bostondesignguide.com

The homeowners wanted the home to be “livable,” and created
zones for the kids and adult spaces. While Simone’s bedroom
(top right) may be her favorite room of the house, the master
bath, laden with marble by Ideal Tile of Newton, comes off as
even more elegant aside the rugged terrain.
Gleaming, glossy finishes make the
immaculate, minimalist kitchen sparkle.
156
bostondesignguide.com

AAn impeccably chic, modern unit in a luxury building
began as a blank canvas. When Sea-Dar Construction
first began work, “all we had was the outside shell of a
building,” maintains Vice President/Principal Tony
Salem. There were no partitions, the floor was uneven,
and yet, in just 11 months time, that space would be
transformed into a hip, high-style apartment to rival
New York’s most fashionable addresses.
Architect Buzz Brannen and Joe Gloski of JCG
Architecture, together with interior designer Manuel de
Santaren, cultivated more than a look. They gave the
residence a bearing, an air of refined glamour achieved
by the sum of clean lines, sterling city vantages, premium
finishes and carefully curated art and furnishings.
De Santaren looked to the homeowner’s superb collection
of midcentury furniture pieces for the overall feel
and design direction. Working closely with an active
and engaged client, he maintained a clean aesthetic,
adding select pieces to complement and unify the
composition. “Custom serpentine sofas from Vladimir
Kagan’s studio, touches of rich color, and luminous textured
fabrics and carpets were key in defining the visual
language,” he explains.
The color palette, a study in nuance and tone,
“gradually morphs from the palest shade of gray to
the high-impact black of the library,” says de Santaren.
The hues serve as a worthy backdrop for a knock-out
contemporary art collection, which together with bold,
multidimensional views of the cityscape, amplify the
open plan.
Building such spaces is an art in and of itself, but
Sea-Dar Construction revels in the complexities. “When
you’re building modern,” says Salem, “you have to think
of every detail,” whether beautifully apparent, like the
frameless floor-to-ceiling bump out windows or hidden
from view, like the automated shades, designed by Maverick
Integration, which disappear into custom pockets
so as not to obstruct the view.
Materials and finishes must be flawless; which means
sourcing extra stone (woodgrain silver) for an imposing
fireplace surround or testing six variations for the
hardwoods’ custom color (rift-sawn white oak with a UV
cured oil finish).
bostondesignguide.com 157

The living room’s traditional coffered ceiling heightens the
effect of the home’s crisp lines. Discussing the fireplace wall
with modernist Buzz Brannen was great fun for the interior
designer. “Watching him sketch this monolithic element
on a random piece of paper will be something I will always
remember,” says de Santaren.
It’s not only the end product that’s shown a high level of care, it’s the journey.
Construction within an occupied high-end building in the city limits requires
dexterity and finesse. Job sites can’t look like job sites, and neighbors, with
whom the client will have relationships for years, are treated with courtesy.
“We’ve learned to take great pride in the process,” says Project Manager
Andrew Childs; to pass on the joy of creation as well as the jewel. ¨
A landscape that becomes an essential part of
one’s family, life-style, and property, requires the
same fundamental components: a client dedicated
to stewardship; a designer able to respond to a
client’s changing needs; a contractor committed
to the long-term; craftsmen who build to last, and
durable materials that age with beauty.
design for this site included extensive
Time-honored
Tradition
Jim Anderson Stained Glass creates
one of a kind stained glass, etched
glass and engraved glass that are
truly works of art.
PROfile
The East Coast’s preeminent stained glass artist, Jim Anderson creates designs that are a virtuosic
mix of art and architecture. His studio’s stained glass, etched glass and engraved glass are oneof-a-kind,
and grace the grandest homes in Boston and New York, and overseas as well. With
a deep respect for the time-honored tradition of stained glass making, Jim Anderson has carefully
honed his craft for over 35 years. Known for its exacting pieces, Jim Anderson Stained Glass has
been featured on “This Old House,” “Restore America” and the History Channel, and cited as
number one in New England for stained and engraved glass restoration by Yankee Magazine.
Jim Anderson Stained Glass is the go-to studio for designers and decorators seeking unusual
details for doors, windows, skylights, sidelights, transoms, room dividers and decorative
elements. Clients are guided through the design process and given suggestions for colors and
pattern that make this “lit up artwork” truly shine, casting brilliant color and light in homes to the
enjoyment of residents and passersby alike.
Young Ideas Painting and Design takes
pride in creating a lasting finish that
begins with meticulous focus on the prep.
Finishing
Touch
PROfile
JJeff Young brings more than his 35 years of painting experience to every job. Young
started Young Ideas, Inc. while studying architecture in college. Now, an architect
himself, Jeff understands the importance of detail and how critical the final finish is to the
outcome of the job. “On most renovation projects, painting is often the last thing done
and the finished surface is what’s visible when the job is completed.” Because of this,
Young and his crew of professional painters know the importance of prep work.
Young Ideas works with many of the top builders, architects, decorators and designers in
the Boston area to bring their vision to life. In addition to more traditional painting jobs,
the company does faux painting, textures and wallpapering.
CLASSIC, LIVABLE HOMES SCRIPTED TO TELL A STORY
Whether in Boston proper or on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, the homes
of Patrick Ahearn Architect are distinctive yet wholly personalized. From
traditional new constructions to authentic renovations and restorations,
Patrick Ahearn’s residential work is both timeless and timely.
The firm’s design style, which spans many forms of classical architecture,
is largely historically motivated yet adapted to reflect of-the-moment
technologies and the way that homeowners like to live and play today.
A Patrick Ahearn home captures the form’s original spirit and is deeply
rooted in its site. Whether a structure was first built for a sea captain
during the 1800s or crafted yesterday, Ahearn believes he is most
successful when his work goes quietly unnoticed on the streetscape,
appearing as if it has long been part of the neighborhood architectural
fabric.
Having designed more than 200 homes on Martha’s Vineyard alone, and
countless more in the historic Back Bay and beyond, Patrick Ahearn
Architect has created a winning design philosophy that is as much about
beauty and tradition as it is about lifestyle.
