UPDATED FENCE AND PLAYGROUND STRUCTURE GUIDELINES

The wooden fences in our neighborhood are reaching end of life and many need repair or

replacement. Please remember that you must submit an architectural modification request form

for any fence replacement or repair work.

Also, per the guidelines, painting or staining fences is prohibited.

The update for the play sets includes a change to the height allowance based on availability of the

retail market. Note that canvas coverings must follow certain color requirements in keeping with

the developer’s specifications for Grayson Lakes. Before submitting a modification request form, we

suggest a review of Exhibit E - Architectural Guidelines. Adherence to the Architectural Guidelines

facilitates a faster approval of your request. Please visit http://graysonlakesliving.com/docs.htm for

all the information needed.

all your official Board communications

SAFETY CORNER

Please ensure that you always take the following steps to protect your property:

• Lock all entrances to your residence and vehicles, including windows and doors leading to the

garage.

• Park your vehicles in your garage if you can.

• Secure all valuables, including guns, laptops and tablets. If items can’t be secured, ensure that

HOW DO WE LOOK?

Curb appeal has a big impact on your

property value, even if your home is not for

sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not

just one house. Stand back from your house

and take a close look to see if it needs a

mini-makeover. Think about security as well.

Has your shrubbery become overgrown

covering windows or blocking the sidewalk?

Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front?

Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds?

Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You

may want to ask a friend’s opinion, it is easy

to overlook things we see every day. Make

plans now to spruce up your property.

GRAYSON LAKES BOARD

MEETINGS OPEN TO ALL

Meetings of the Grayson Lakes Board of

Directors are held the third Wednesday

of every month except September. The

meetings are held in the Grayson Lakes

Clubhouse and start at 6:30 PM.

Residents wishing to observe need only

show up. Residents wishing to speak

are asked to inform the Management

Company at Karen@crest-management.

com requesting to be placed on the agenda.

Please do this no later than 8 days before the

meeting since agendas are prepared a week

in advance. If you will indicate the nature of

your business beforehand, it will give the

Management Company and your Board a

chance to prepare for questions that might

come up. Please be advised, it is your Board’s

practice to limit initial comments from

residents to 5 minutes, so plan accordingly.

FT. BEND COUNTY - LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained

pose a threat to all our residents. While you

may know your pet is friendly, an animal

running at someone who is walking by is

very scary for that person. Many children are

afraid of animals and become frightened,

which could result in the child getting hurt

trying to avoid the animal. Although most

dog bites occur on the property where the

dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs

do pose a threat to the public. In addition,

unrestrained animals are at increased risk of

being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife.

To make a complaint or report an animal that

is not properly restrained please contact Ft.

NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION AWARENESS MONTH

National Immunization Month is in August. It’s also the beginning of

back-to-school preparations and a good time to make sure your children

are properly vaccinated before they head back to school.

There is no one preventive health measure more important than

immunization. As the World Health Organization notes, the international

medical community has endorsed the use of vaccines and immunization

to prevent and control a number of infectious diseases, as well as chronic

diseases caused by “infectious agents.” Vaccinating your child can avoid

suffering and death associated with afflictions like diarrhea, measles,

pneumonia, polio and whooping cough.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says vaccines are 99% effective. Every

vaccine goes through a series of tests before being approved to ensure

safety. Vaccines are necessary to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Some diseases that many had thought eradicated have reappeared, as

polio did in Venezuela in 2018. Vaccines are studied intensively by the

FDA, the CDC and many other organizations that vigilantly in keep watch

over existing vaccines for possible complications.

Herd immunity is when a certain percent of immunized people in a

community reaches a level where everyone (including those who are

too young or too sick to be immunized) get some degree of protection.

It’s important that as many people as possible get immunized. It’s very

risky to the health of other children to rely on herd immunity to protect

your non-immunized child. By forgetting or opting to skip booster

vaccinations, you are undercutting the effectiveness of herd immunity

for both your own family and the community at large.

25 CAMPGROUNDS WITHIN/AROUND

2 HOURS OF HOUSTON TX

It’s summertime and that means it’s time to get out the camping gear, fishing

poles and sun screen! There’s no better way to relax than to sit outside of the

tent you just set up and breathe in.

SAM HOUSTON NATIONAL PARK: NEW WAVERLY, TX

This gorgeous national park offers tent pads, picnic tables, parking spurs

for trailers, lantern posts, grills, potable water, and toilets. Hiking is very

popular in the spring when the climate is milder. Water activities get

going in the summer on Double Lake with canoes and paddleboats that

can be rented from the park. Deer is the most popular game animal in the

Sam Houston National Forest, with squirrels second. Quail and dove are

found around newly regenerated timberland. For the water sportsman,

fishing and duck hunting can be enjoyed on area lakes and streams.

BRAZOS BEND: NEEDVILLE, TX

This park has got plenty of options for activities during your stay. Lots

of trails, some of which are even wheelchair friendly, wind through the

woods and bring you to the water’s edge of the lake. Just make sure you’ve

brushed up on your alligator safety because they’re not uncommon in

certain areas of the park. Aside from walking or biking the trails, there’s

also the option of horseback riding on one of the multiuse trails.

to the max. Bring your RV here, up to 80’ and enjoy the cable tv, wifi,

hookups and pools to lounge in all day. If you haven’t got an RV, don’t

feel left out! You can stay in one of the 35 cabins that have bathrooms and

a full kitchen. Tent campers are welcome as well. Visitors can explore the

area and find the nearby golf course, restaurants and the lake has plenty

of recreational activities.

GALVESTON ISLAND STATE PARK: GALVESTON, TX

This park is a freaking island, so as far as camping goes you really can’t

go wrong with this option. There is hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching

and lots more. One of the many things that make this island campground

unique is the paddle trails they boast. Though, if you decide to go on these,

you’ll need to bring your own canoe or kayak because they don’t rent them

out. Outside the campground, there is an educational theme park called

Moody Gardens. Bring the kids along and there’ll be plenty of nature for

people of various interests to enjoy and participate in during the stay.

STEPHEN F. AUSTIN STATE PARK: SAN FELIPE, TX

This lovely State Park has six miles of hiking trails that are open to bikers

as well. Campsites have full hookups and some sites even hold up to 60

people. Stephen F. Austin State Park also holds events for youth over the

summer. Nearby attractions include but are not limited to: a neighboring

golf course, a beautiful riverbank to fish from and the San Felipe de

Austin State

HUNTSVILLE STATE PARK: HUNTSVILLE, TX

Here’s a State Park full of relaxation. You can go and unwind in the shade

of the trees and go fishing from one of the fishing piers or off your boat

or canoe. There are watercraft for rent including paddleboats, canoes and

kayaks. There’s even a bird blind to enjoy watching the local feathered

friends who flit about the forest.

SEA RIM STATE PARK: SABINE PASS, TX

This park has 4,000 acres of marsh and a boardwalk going through so you

can enjoy without getting your feet wet. Campers, cabin-dwellers and

RV-goers all have a place here at Sea Rim State Park. Feel free to fish from

the boardwalk or explore with your rented or own canoe or kayak. Sea

Rim also has the option to explore its grounds from home via their virtual

tour of the trails map.

NORTHLAKE RV RESORT: HOUSTON, TX

Come to Northlake RV Resort if you’re looking for a nice and relaxing place

to kick your feet up and breathe deeply. This resort has got a massive list of

amenities so it’s ridiculous to try to write them all here, but if you’re interested

you should definitely check out their website. Some of the best aspects of

this resort are the park-wide wifi, the stocked fishing lakes and the fire pits.

This place allows for extended stays and weekend trips, so regardless of your

plans you’ll definitely have plenty of options right next to home!

TRADERS VILLAGE RV RESORT:

Traders Village is a short drive for you and a wonderful place to stay. The

electric and water hookups are free, there is a pool for swimming, and

there’s wifi. Bring your picnic supplies so you can eat outside at the picnic

tables while enjoying the weather. You’re welcome to lounge around

and enjoy relaxing or you can go next door to the flea market that hosts

events and activities for visitors.

ALLSTAR RV RESORT: HOUSTON, TX

At AllStar RV Resort, they’ve got anything you could need while camping

in your RV and more. If you’ve got yourself a Fido who wanders himself

into a smelly situation, there’s a dog washing station here for your (and

your nose’s) convenience. Take advantage of the swimming pool, the

computer room, the recreation room and more. There’s also a stadium

nearby for baseball fans to watch their games.

ESCAPE THE PAVEMENT: HOUSTON, TX

There are actually two camping sites associated with Escape the Pavement

near Houston. There are four aspects to Escape the Pavement: Heyne

Ranch, Lake Houston Wilderness Park, Blackwood Land Institute and Big

Thicket National Preserve. It’s actually super great, because no matter

your flavor preference of outdoors experience, this place has got you. One

is a ranch for you and your horse to enjoy pastures, rivers and wooded

trails; perfect for a day trip. You’ll also love the bonfires on the beach! One

of their campgrounds has over 4,000 acres of forest and a creek that you

can go ahead and explore the trails winding around through it on your

horse, bike or on foot. The other area available for camping is restricted to

primitive camping only because it is located on a preserve. Lastly, the land

institute is a great educational place for kids and adults alike. Check out

their website if any of these interest you and start planning a trip!

LAKE SOMERVILLE: SOMERVILLE, TX

The campground and park are also full of opportunities for fun in the sun.

Water activities like swimming, skiing, fishing, and the likes are all great

ideas on Lake Somerville. There are picnic areas for campers or day hikers

to sit, enjoy the view, and munch on their sandwiches. Birdwatching,

volleyball, hiking and horseback riding are popular pass times. Overall,

this is a wonderful place to relax and play in the great outdoors.

Grayson Lakes | August 2020 7

SHELDON LAKE STATE PARK: HOUSTON, TX

Sheldon Lake State Park is open to fishing and wildlife observation. You’re

welcome to take your boat out for a ride or fish off the banks, so long as

you’re wary of the alligators inhabiting the park. The learning center has

tons of activities for the kids that you can sign up for and enjoy. Some

of these activities are more hands-on, like catch and release fishing

and some are visual demonstrations like green building technologies

or smart wildscape demonstrations for gardening and using beautiful

native plants.

BASTROP STATE PARK: BASTROP, TX

A forest with a history and personality, the Lost Pines located on Bastrop

State Park used to be a luscious and well-groomed forest before being

damaged by floods and fires. Now, the forest’s recovery is just as beautiful

a sight. The story itself is a perfect reason to visit, but Bastrop also has

swimming, biking, hiking and geocaching as an incentive. If you’re

looking to exploring the surrounding area, Bastrop also has museums

and restaurants to check out on your vacation!

BUESCHER STATE PARK: SMITHVILLE, TX

Experienced bicyclists looking for a challenge will enjoy the bike trails

here at Buescher State Park. This park connects with Bastrop State Park via

a paved road with great views of the area. Unfortunately, there is currently

no swimming in this park, but if you adventure the short commute to the

nearby Bastrop you’ll find a nice swimming pool for visitors like yourself.

Lastly, if you’re hankering to float along in a tandem kayak or a canoe, you

can do so through rental at Buescher State Park.

LOCKHART STATE PARK: SMITHVILLE, TX

This park has a pool, grounds for camping, trails to hike and a nine-hole

golf course among many other things that allow you to get active! If you

want to go fishing but don’t want to lug around your equipment, you’re

in luck! The park has fishing equipment available for guests to use during

their stay. If you’re looking to have a gathering of people for a family or

church event, there is a Group Recreation Hall that also has a kitchen

capable of holding up to 75 people at once.

LAKE LIVINGSTON: LIVINGSTON, TX

If you’re looking for a beautiful place to host a family reunion, try looking

here! Campsites have full hookups and there are rentable screen shelters

as well. As long as you’re wary of the alligators that dwell in the area,

visitors can enjoy camping, hiking, birding, swimming, and biking. On

your way in and out you can stop at the souvenir shop that sells treats

and equipment!

LAKE LIVINGSTON KOA: ONALASKA, KOA

Here’s a popular KOA that you’ll probably need to make a reservation for

ahead of time to ensure you get yourself a spot for the night. There is

a beautiful pool with lounge chairs for you to relax and sink into while

soaking in the sun. Your kids will enjoy the playground. If you love

enjoying the great outdoors and its many inhabitants, there is a local bald

eagle named Eddie who supposedly flies around the area frequently.

There is also fishing, a pavilion to admire the scenery in, and is known for

the sunset views.

VILLAGE CREEK STATE PARK: LUMBERTON, TX

Campers interested in sleeping in tents, RVs or cabins are welcome here.

You’ll be able to go swimming, fishing, biking, hiking and more with your

friends and family. If you prefer to learn about your surroundings and its

history rather than being emerged in the real deal, there are programs

and museums aplenty for you to observe and glean information from

during your stay.

PALMETTO STATE PARK: GONZALES, TX

This little oasis has a multitude of thirsty plants that cannot live in other

areas due to the lack of water. The park is named for the dwarf palmettos

that grow beneath the trees. As a visitor, you can also enjoy the copious

amounts of flowing and stagnant water by swimming, tubing, fishing

and canoeing. Those interested in keeping dry will enjoy bird watching,

hiking, geocaching or staring at the dwarf palmettos.

VICTORIA COLETO CREEK LAKE KOA: VICTORIA, TX

Come to this RV and tent camping site to enjoy the lovely wildflowers,

scattered oaks, birds and other wildlife. There is a pond with catfish that you

can relax on the edge of while fishing and other areas for freshwater fishing.

The winters are not as frigid as up north, so you can always count on decent

weather should you decide to vacation here! There are plenty of places in the

area for you to check out, making it perfect for both short or extended stays.

Ceremony - a moving display of hope to represent the personal reasons

participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s.

This year’s challenge is whether we will be able to come together of 1,300

walkers or not. So we have two plans - Plan A is to have the big event. Plan

B is to have a virtual event that may be held in various neighborhoods,

businesses, schools and other smaller communities where people can

come together and Walk to End Alzheimer’s. In addition to the 3-mile

walk, participants will enjoy a fun-filled experience that includes valuable

information, celebrations, entertainment, corporate sponsors and so

much more.

Participants can join a team or register to walk as an individual at www.

alz.org/walk.

Even though the office has been closed, the Alzheimer’s Association has

continued to offer support through various avenues than before the

stay-at-home order. The 24/7 Free Hotline can be a lifeline for those who

suffer from the disease and those who care for them, call 800-272-3900.

Support Groups are meeting virtually, please check www.alz.org for

times and locations. Facebook Live sessions are held every Wednesday

at 11 AM. Find the live sessions and lots of other programs and events on

the Facebook page, “Alzheimer’s Association: Houston & Southeast Texas

Chapter.” Virtual classes are offered to cover many issues each week. To

join one of the virtual programs, please visit www.alz.org/crfor call 800-

272-3900.

NATIONAL DAYS IN AUGUST

Did you know that every month has some sort of National Day, week

or even the whole month is a National month? Some could be used to

plan a fun day with the family or create a project for the kids on a rainy

afternoon or maybe just start an interesting discussion! Here is a partial

list (there are many more) of what we found for the month of August:

DREAMS HAVE NO TRAVEL LIMITATIONS!

In a time when life has come to a screeching halt, we begin to feel isolated

and divided from the rest of our communities and the world as a whole.

Help us make 2020/2021 the #YearOfUnity!! Our goal is to help Texas

recover and thrive by reconnecting with the world around us once again!

We have so many international teens from many different countries who

are eager and ready to experience life in America and they dream of the

host family who will choose to welcome them this fall. What better way

to introduce your family to another country and culture without having

to travel half way across the globe!

What is a host family?

• Minimum age requirement of 25. Must be able to pass a background

check and have a stable home life.

• Hosts come in all shapes and sizes! Married, single, with/without

children…. all kinds of families are welcome!

• With the help of a Local Coordinator, Hosts are able to choose a student

who fits with their family’s interests and hobbies. They can begin

communicating with their student once the placement is finalized in the

database!

• Hosts receive monthly contact as well as 24/7 support during their

hosting experience!

• Students cover all of their own personal expenses and carry their own

medical insurance.

• Students arrive about 10 days prior to school starting and they depart

about 7-10 days after school ends. Some have signed up to come for

a semester (Aug.-Jan.) and most have signed up to come for the full

school year (late Aug-late May/early June).

Hosts provide students with:

• 3 shared meals a day. Students cover lunch if they choose to buy hot

lunch at school.

• Students can share a bedroom with a host sibling of the same sex and

within 4 years of age from each other. Student must have their own bed.

• The ability to attend American public high school. Hosts would help

with transportation to extracurricular activities, within reason and based

on availability.

• The love of your family! Students are to be treated as a family member

and will share in household chores and daily life with the family.

Help us bounce back from isolation and 2020/2021 the YearOfUnity! If

you would like to hear about our student applicants to see if we have a

match for you, please contact me directly at 832-455-7881 or email me at

vicki.stsfoundation@yahoo.com.

NATIONAL DOG DAY - AUGUST 26 TH

This day encourages dog ownership of all breeds. Whether mixed or

purebred, embrace the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and

abuse-free life. Dogs give us companionship; they keep us safe and they

aid those in need. It is a goal for many on this day to find homes for all

dogs in need of a loving family. The purpose of the National Dog Day

Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year.

A dog is man’s best friend. When dogs find a forever home, their

companionship creates lifelong benefits. They bring with them joy,

loyalty and devotion. Eventually, no matter the breed, these pets become

family.

Take your dog for a walk. If you do not have a dog, ask to take your

neighbor’s dog for a stroll or volunteer at a shelter.

Garden Tips For August

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.

• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood.

Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron

cheleates.

• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around

the roots.

• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth.

• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.

• Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/

or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new

generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban

to stop the damage.

• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly.

If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look

like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the

new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease

environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf.

• Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material,

mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments

like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a

favorable environment.
