Canadian Eventing

What is Eventing?

The sport of Eventing is best described as an

equine triathlon. It began as a military exercise and

competition for cavalry horses and officers to test

their endurance, agility, and ability to get quickly

between two points in the countryside. Today,

in the modern equivalent, the sport of eventing

encompasses three separate tests: dressage,

cross-country, and show jumping. Each is scored

individually but added together for the final results,

and the winner of the competition is the competitor

with the least number of penalty points gained over

the three phases. The team winner is the team with

the lowest aggregate number of penalties among

team members.

What is Canadian Eventing?

Canadian Eventing is a committee of Equine Canada

responsible for the sport of Eventing in Canada,

from the domestic development to the international

elite level. Canadian Eventing is governed by a

committee comprised of 12 members, including

two rider representatives. All activities of Canadian

Eventing are administered by this committee via

5 sub-committees with the support of technical

manager Fleur Tipton, who is based at the Equine

Canada offices in Ottawa.

CORE OBJECTIVES

Through it’s Strategic Plan, the Canadian Eventing

Committee is committed to programs to achieve the

following Goals:

Formed in 1998, the Elite Riders Association (ERA) is an association dedicated

to representing and promoting the views and interests of event riders in Canada.

The ERA membership is comprised of all high performance Eventing athletes,

including short-listed and long-listed riders.

As the voice of the Canadian Eventing National Team’s listed riders, ERA

maintains athlete representatives on the Equine Canada CE High Performance

Committee and the Canadian Eventing Committee, the national governing body

for the sport of Eventing in Canada. The CE High Performance Committee

oversees all high performance activities, including planning and administering the

National Team Program, hiring of the Technical Advisor, development of selection

criteria and the selection process, and hiring of competition sports science

support personnel. The ERA membership is also responsible for voting on the

appointment of two of the Team selectors. Communication within ERA keeps

riders updated with regards to policy-making and news bulletins of Canadian

Eventing, Equine Canada, and the FEI. Currently, the ERA representatives on

the Canadian Eventing High Performance Committee are Lesley Grant (2004-

Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:

Langley, British Columbia May 6, 1977 Langley, British Columbia

Hawley Bennett grew up on a hobby farm and was involved with the 4-H Horse Club and the Grove and Langley Pony

Club. With Livingstone, a thoroughbred gelding bred by her neighbour and purchased as a four-year-old, Hawley formed

a truly incredible partnership. Following a fourth place fi nish at the 1998 North American Young Riders’ Championship,

Hawley, then 21, was named to the Canadian Eventing Team Long List.

In 2002, Hawley and Livingstone fi nished 14th at the CCI*** Fair Hill International and, the following year, enjoyed a

clear cross-country performance at the prestigious CCI**** Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event. In the fall of 2003, they

were members of the Silver Medal Team at the 2003 Pan American Eventing Championships and Hawley’s Olympic

dream became a reality when she and Livingstone represented the Canadian Equestrian Team in Athens, Greece. In

2005, the fairy tale continued when Hawley and Livingstone traveled to Sweden

where they placed 15th in the World Cup Final.

Hawley credits her groom, Stacey Thorson, the never-ending support of her

mother, Gerry, and her coaches, Pam Arthur and Buck Davidson, for her success.

Hawley currently trains in Temecula, California.

Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:

Toronto, Ontario March 8, 1984 Brighton, Michigan

Brittany comes by the love of horses naturally - her mother, Jennifer Merrick Brooks also rides and acts as Brittany’s

coach. Brittany’s top horse is Trademark, a resale project that she ended up keeping for herself. In their fi rst two-star

event, the 2005 CCI** Radnor Hunt International Three Day Event, Trademark and Brittany were the highest-placed

foreign competitors. The result put them on the Canadian Eventing Team Long List for the fi rst time.

An active member of the Pony Club for most of her childhood, her involvement has allowed her the opportunity to travel.

Her biggest trip came in 1999 when she was selected to participate on the Mounted Games Team headed for Australia.

Brittany is now an HA member of the Huron Valley Pony Club in the Great Lakes Region as well as a visiting instructor.

In 2003, she attended the National Youth Congress in California as the Regional

Delegate.

Brittany enjoys the support of her parents as well as her sister and two younger

brothers. A third year student at Eastern Michigan University, she is currently

taking time off in order to concentrate on her riding. Brittany also has a keen

interest in photography and has displayed her work in exhibitions.

Riding since he can remember, Kyle grew up on his parents’ thoroughbred racing farm. Interested in show jumping as

a teenager, Kyle trained with Albert Kley at the famed Spruce Meadows facility. At 18, he turned his focus to eventing

and spent a year training in England with 2004 Olympic Champion Leslie Law.

After returning to Canada, Kyle started up his own business of buying and selling horses off the Calgary racetrack,

and eventually moved his business to Kentucky, where he stayed for three years. While competing at the 1996

Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event, Elaine Davies spotted his talent and offered him the position of resident rider at her

Hawkridge Farm. Partnered with Davies’ Scotia Gold Rush, Kyle enjoyed a second place fi nish at the 1999 CCI***

Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event and went on to represent Canada at the 1999 Pan

American Games.

Now based in Sparr, Florida, where he manages a training facility, Kyle is enjoying

success with a large string of horses. Married to American competitor, Jennifer Carter,

Kyle enjoys sailing, skiing, running and windsurfi ng when time allows.

Vanessa Fenwick made her mark on the Canadian eventing scene in 2005 riding Dalliance. The grey thoroughbred

gelding had been part of the Gold Medal American Team at the 2003 Pan American Championships under Robert

Costello. Vanessa and Dalliance successfully completed two CCI** events in 2005, the Bromont International Three

Day Event in Quebec and the Virginia Horse Trials, earning Vanessa a place on the Canadian Eventing Team Long

List.

For the 2006 season, Vanessa purchased another horse with the experience to help her to achieve her goals. The

American thoroughbred gelding Balista had been Mike Winter’s mount at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece,

where the pair were Canada’s top fi nishers. Vanessa already has the season off

to a strong start, quickly progressing from the preliminary to the advanced level

as she gets to know her new partner.

In addition to Dalliance and Balista, Vanessa is also working with the developing

Anglo-Arab gelding, Dhundu, with the help of her coaches, Mike Winter and Jo

Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:

Uxbridge, Ontario October 16, 1983 Uxbridge, Ontario

Horses have always been a part of Jessica Ferguson’s life. For her fi rst birthday, she received a pony and has never

looked back. Her fi rst taste of eventing success came with Let’s Boogie. Although he had a reputation for being a

diffi cult horse, Jessica developed a partnership that saw the pair fi nish third individually in the one-star division of the

1999 North American Young Riders’ Championship and lead the Ontario Team to a fourth place fi nish.

Jessica was named to the 2005 Talent Squad with Exploring, a horse she purchased as a four-year-old, based on their

top ten fi nish at the 2004 CCI* Midsouth Three Day Event in Lexington, KY. Also based on her 2004 results, she was

selected as a recipient of a $1,000 Canadian Eventing Athlete Development Scholarship. Further success at the twostar

level with Exploring has placed her on the 2006 Canadian Eventing Team

Long List.

A graduate of Uxbridge Secondary School, Jessica earned her Business

Administration degree from Durham College and is currently a fourth level Certifi ed

General Accountant. A natural athlete, she plays on community volleyball and

home in April of 2005. Her goal of completing a two-star event was soon met when she and Carly placed fi fth in the

CCI** Galway Downs. The result earned Candice a place on the Canadian Eventing Team Long List, which is an

impressive accomplishment for a 19-year-old competitor.

Candice has trained for the past fi ve years with former World Championship

competitor, Chelan Kozak, at her 3 Daze Farm in Abbotsford, British Columbia,

and credits Chelan with fi rst introducing her to the sport of eventing.

Nicole got her fi rst taste of riding at summer camp and, by the time she was 13, had fi nally convinced her mother to

buy her a horse. Having fi rst competed at the intermediate level with Night Hawk, Nicole would achieve international

success with Dillon the Villain, a thoroughbred gelding she purchased in England while training with Alison Oliver. In

1994 and 1995, the pair won back-to-back Canadian Open Championships at Checkmate, making her and Dillon the

Villain the only horse/rider combination to ever achieve this goal.

With Canadian Chocolate, her partner of the last several years, Nicole has contested several one and two-star events

including the CCI** Virginia Horse Trials in Lexington, Virginia, where her results put her on the Canadian Eventing

the CCI** Virginia Horse Trials. With those results, Wendy found herself catapulted onto the Canadian Eventing Team

Long List. The success gave her the confi dence to attempt the advanced level in 2006. Incredibly, the pair started the

season by winning an advanced division at the highly competitive Pine Top Spring

Horse Trials in Georgia.

Wendy is a graduate of the University of Waterloo and Humber College and is married

to Bill Whitehead, also an eventing competitor. Wendy spends her days riding the

fi ve horses she owns with her husband.

Samantha Taylor was heavily involved with the Canadian Pony Club, earning her ‘A’ level. Turning her focus to eventing,

she enjoyed a fi fth place fi nish in the CCIY* division of the 2003 North American Young Riders’ Championship riding

Oslek. That fall, they fi nished the CCI** Radnor Hunt Three Day Event on their dressage score, placing 20th overall.

Based on her 2004 accomplishments riding My Silver Lining and Livewire, Samantha was named to the 2005 Talent

Squad. With Livewire, Samantha enjoyed a tremendous 2005 season that saw her fi nish in the top twenty in no less

than three CCI** events, an accomplishment that places her on the Canadian Eventing Team Long List. Samantha is

also currently competing at the intermediate level with her other two horses, Sight Unseen and Ringwood Zazu. In

addition, owner Laura Gatewood has generously given Samantha the ride on

Lucinda while her coach of the past four years, Buck Davidson, has handed her

the reins to Catalyst.

Samantha appreciates the support of her parents, Mitch Taylor and Nora

McCallum, and her brother, Patrick. In addition to riding, Samantha enjoys

Long Listed

Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:

Calgary, Alberta January 28, 1987 Calgary, Alberta

Talia Wells fi rst began riding at a young age on her aunt’s ranch, but her competitive career did not begin until 2000

when she was riding at Sandra Donnelly’s facility, Alborak Stable. Talia purchased her top mount, New Heights, better

known as ‘Heidi’ around the barn, from Sandra as a four-year-old.

The pair formed a strong partnership that saw them fi nishing second in the CIC** division of the Bromont International

Three Day Event, followed by a twelfth place fi nish individually at the 2005 North American Young Riders’ Championship

in Lexington, Virginia. With this result, Talia earned Long List status with the Canadian Eventing Team for the fi rst

time.

Talia graduated from Canmore Collegiate High School in 2004 and completed

one semester at Calgary’s Mount Royal College before deciding to follow her

competitive career. Besides horses, she enjoys photography and is a certifi ed

snowboarding instructor. She appreciates the support of her parents, Joseph

and Carole Wells, as well as her younger brother, Sasha, who is a member of the

Canadian Junior National Figure Skating Team.

Winter

Short Listed

Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:

Montreal, Québec August 16, 1974 Toronto, Ontario

Mike Winter has been named to the Canadian Eventing Team Short or Long List every year since 1996 having competed

in numerous FEI-level competitions on a variety of horses.

Riding Balista, Mike represented Canada at the 2003 Pan American Championships where he was the top placed

Canadian, securing the Team Silver Medal. The following year, Mike and Balista made their Olympic debut in Athens,

Greece, where they were again Canada’s top fi nishers. In 2005, Mike achieved a career milestone by placing in the top

ten with two different horses at the CCI*** level - Kingpin was seventh at the CCI*** Foxhall and, one month later, Balista

was eighth in the CCI*** Jersey Fresh. Mike and Kingpin also competed in Scotland at the CCI*** Blair Castle Three

Day Event. These results, along with Mike’s success with Daybreak, ranked him ninth on the United States Eventing

Association’s leader board.

Mike has two daughters and is based in Newnan, Georgia, where he and his

wife, Emma, also an international eventing competitor, operate a training and

competition barn. When his busy training schedule allows, Mike enjoys snow

boarding, canoe trips, and ‘do it yourself’ projects on his 1920 Craftsman home.

O’Connor

International Technical Advisor

The Canadian Eventing Team is pleased to be working with David O’Connor as its International Technical Advisor.

Competing for the United States Equestrian Team, David earned three Olympic, two World Championships and two Pan

American Games medals. He won the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event three times and is a fi ve-time winner of the

Fair Hill International Three Day Event. In 1997, he became only the second American to win the renowned Badminton

Three Day Event.

The pinnacle of David’s eventing career was reached at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, when he

captured the Individual Gold Medal riding Custom Made, and also secured the Team Bronze Medal riding Giltedge.

In 2004, David offi cially retired from international competition to focus on the training of riders and horses. Together with

his wife and Olympic medallist teammate, Karen O’Connor, they operate training facilities at their home base in Virginia

as well as Florida.
