<strong>of</strong> joy beneath <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y wanted hope. They<br />

were ignorant faces. As <strong>All</strong>en looked on <strong>the</strong>m<br />

he was seized with terror, for he saw before<br />

him <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> East London—<strong>the</strong> mighty<br />

City, <strong>the</strong> neglected City, <strong>the</strong> joyless City, <strong>the</strong><br />

City <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> baser sort, and he trembled. If <strong>the</strong><br />

vision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> multitud<strong>in</strong>ous face, this troubled<br />

and turbid (^)cean <strong>of</strong> heavy brows and dull,<br />

disappo<strong>in</strong>ted eyes, had cont<strong>in</strong>ued, I th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong><br />

young man would have gone mad ;<br />

sently <strong>the</strong>re came lelief when that th<strong>in</strong>g<br />

happened to him, which has also happened to<br />
