ATHLETICS AT W&L
Washington and Lee University provides its
students with a unique athletic program that allows
them to pursue athletic excellence without
strong, diverse program in which participants
are motivated by their love of the game and
their desire to excel.
women
• The W&L men swimming team has had at least one All-American for 14-straight
years and has finished eighth at the NCAA's two years running -- the highest
finishes in program history
• The W&L women's squad has won 18 Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles
since 1985 and has had at least seven All-ODAC swimmers in each of the past
MEN'S SEASON PREVIEW
Seven seniors are gone
from last season’s W&L men's
swimming team that recorded
a second-straight eighth-place
finish at the NCAA tournament;
a senior class that included
All-Americans Alex Sweet (50
Free NCAA Champion) and Tim
McGlaston.
However tough it will be to fill
the void, sixth-year head coach
Joel Shinofield is not all that
concerned about his 2008-09 team stepping up to the challenge.
“We lost an outstanding senior class," said Shinofield. "That was a group of outstanding
leaders and some very talented swimmers, but we have a good group coming back
as well."
Four talented seniors among nine All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference honorees
headline the returnees.
Matt Anderson, Paul Crook, Chris Diebold and Brett Tatman comprise this season’s
senior class, and there is no dearth of talent there. Crook, Diebold and Tatman all earned
all-conference honors, as well as NCAA All-America accolades as part of one relay or
another last season. They will be responsible for the bulk of the scoring this year.
“This year’s senior class is not as vocal, but they lead by example and they’re
talented,” Shinofield noted. “I expect a lot out of them.”
Crook was a member of the 400 free relay that finished sixth and the 800 free relay
that finished eighth at Nationals last year. Diebold also participated on the 800 free team
while Tatman took part on the 200 free relay team that came in fourth. With their collective
experience and a large group of underclassmen looking up to them, their leadership will
be key to the success of the Generals this season.
Junior Brandon Barnds also returns after earning All-America laurels a year ago. A
member of both the 200 and 400 free relay teams and a two-time all-conference honoree,
he will be counted on to add some scoring punch as an individual this season.
“I look for Brandon to take a step forward this season," noted Shinofield. "He has
a great shot to qualify for the NCAA's as an individual this season following a good
sophomore season."
Other All-BMC honorees that are back include juniors Jonathan Giesen (500 free),
Winston Stagg (200 fly) and Ian Childers (200 medley relay) and sophomores Ryan
Hanson (200 medley relay) and Brandon Wilder (200 fly).
“I think that we are pretty solid in the distance events this year with Giesen, Daniel
Austin and Kevin Corn coming back," noted Shinofield. "We are not going to be quite as
sprint dominated as we have been in years past.”
Look for junior Nicholas Talluri to step up in the sprint events with the departures of
McGlaston and Sweet.
Shinofield also expects the addition of 15 newcomers to help the Generals overcome
the loss of the 2008 senior class.
"I expect some of the newcomers to come in and make some contributions right
away," he said. "A lot depends on how quickly they adapt to the way we train, but if they
can, they will help us immediately.”
The incoming class features a diverse group of swimmers. Shinofield expects Ryan
Hartman to contribute to several relays, Ian Dexter and Sam Cotterall to add some depth
to the breastroke, and Brad Harder and Chris Washnock among others, to add depth to
the class.
“We have a very competitive schedule and it is going to be interesting how quickly
we bring some guys along, and how the upperclassmen assert themselves,” added
Shinofield.
WOMEN'S SEASON PREVIEW
Having won 18 ODAC titles since 1985, the W&L women’s swim team did not skip
a beat during the 2007-08 season under new head coach Kami Gardner. En route to
another conference title, the Generals boasted nine all-conference swimmers, the most
honorees in eight years. The list also included the ODAC Swimmer of the Year, Lindsey
Strachan, and the ODAC Rookie of the Year, Tess Hayden.
Given a slew of returnees and another solid recruiting class, it seems the Generals
may be geared for another conference crown in 2008-09.
“We are on the rise and heading in the right direction,” said Gardner when asked
her opinion of the upcoming season. “I think that we are going to show some significant
improvement in some areas, we have a lot of talent coming back and I expect an immediate
impact from some of the first-years that we have coming in.”
Gardner's long term goals not only include continuing the string of conference titles,
but also becoming competitive on a national stage.
Among the returnees that will help build a foudation for success are seven of the
nine all-conference honorees from a season ago, having lost just three seniors from the
2007-08 team, including 100 fly record-holder and two-time conference scholar-athlete
of the year, Amy Roberson.
“Every year your program experiences a tough loss due to graduation and we'll
feel that again this season," said Gardner. "But, I also feel like we've got a great group
coming back and have the leadership to help fill the void."
The Generals' roster will feature three seniors, including Strachan, a three-time allconference
performer and member of the W&L record-holding 200 and 400 free relay
teams.
“I fully expect Lindsey to have an outstanding season and to challenge for a spot at
the National Championships,” said Gardner.
Joining Strachan as members of the senior class are All-ODAC honorees Susan
Mahoney and Julianne Miata. Mahoney was a member of the winning 400 medley relay
team and Miata was the league's Bonnie Kestner Sportsmanship Award recipient.
In addition, Gardner expects Hayden to build on what was a great first season.
Hayden was a member of three relays that brought home ODAC titles in 2008 (200 free,
200 medley, 800 free) in addition to winning four individual events (200 free, 400 free,
500 free, 1650 free).
“Tess had a great rookie campaign," noted Gardner. "She has the potential to take
her swimming to the next level this season."
Also look for returning all-conference performers, juniors Jenna Worsham and Sarah
Simpson, in addition to sophomore Jackie Smith, to add scoring punch to the Generals’
lineup this season. Simpson was
a member of four relay teams
that claimed titles at the 2008
conference meet (200 free, 400
free, 800 free, 400 medley) in
addition to recording runner-up
finishes in both the 50 and 100
free events. Worsham, who also
participated on four title winning
relays (200 free, 400 free, 800
free and 200 medley), will look
to improve upon her runner-up
finishes in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breast. Smith took part in the winning
800 free relay team and recorded a third-place finish in the 200 free.
Adding to what is an already deep and talented team will be first-years Dana Fredericks,
Lauren Starnes and Brielle Weinstein among the 10 new faces that Gardner has
brought in.
"I am looking forward to the start of the season," noted Gardner. "I'm very excited
about the talent that we have and seeing how much we can improve as a team as the
season progresses."
over 150 members.
A volunteer assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Minnesota, Shinofield
aided the Gophers' breaststrokers and butterflyers to the 2002 and 2003 NCAA Division
I finals.
ended prematurely due to injury.
THE CY TWOMBLY POOL
Headquarters for the Washington and Lee aquatics program is the impressive Cy
Twombly Memorial Pool, located in the spacious J. W. Warner Center.
The Twombly Pool, overlooked by a 500-seat gallery, measures 25 yards in length
and features six regulation lanes and a computerized electronic timing system with a
six-lane scoreboard system.
W&L swimmers enjoy a comfortable locker room just off the pool deck that includes
a television, video analysis equipment and a lounge area.
The pool's first competition was the 1972 NCAA Men's College Division Swimming
and Diving Championships. The pool also served as the site for the 1982 NCAA Division
III Swimming and Diving Championships. In the past, the facility has served as host
to the Atlantic States Swimming Championships, as well as the Old Dominion Athletic
CHUCK O'CONNELL, INTERIM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
JAN HATHORN, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
The 2008-09 school year will be the second
for Jan Hathorn as Washington and Lee's
Director of Athletics. She is just the seventh
director in the University's history.
Hathorn served as the University's women's
lacrosse coach for 19 seasons and as the
women's soccer coach for 14 seasons. She
had also been an assistant athletic director and
the University's Director of Physical Education
from 2002-07.
Hathorn arrived at W&L in the fall of 1987
and was charged with beginning the school's
women's soccer and lacrosse programs. She
guided the soccer team to a 129-88-9 (.591)
record from 1987-2000 and was named the
ODAC Coach of the Year twice.
In lacrosse, Hathorn turned W&L into one of the nation's elite programs, guiding
the Generals to a 222-93 (.705) record from 1989-07. Her teams produced 17 winning
seasons, nine ODAC titles and eight NCAA Tournament berths, and she was named the
ODAC Coach of the Year nine times, including in each of her final five years. Hathorn's
277 career wins (277-112) rank among the most in the history of collegiate women's
lacrosse.
Before arriving at W&L, Hathorn spent five years at Denison University, where
she coached the lacrosse team to a 55-19 overall record and five conference titles. Her
1985, 1986, and 1987 teams finished eighth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament
WASHINGTON and LEE UNIVER-
SITY — a small, private, liberal
arts college, is the ninth oldest
institution of higher education in
America. Founded in 1749, W&L
prides itself on the characteristics
that have earned its reputation as
a place unique and apart in the
national educational scene.
The school’s name comes from
two of America’s great leaders
who saved W&L in times of need.
George Washington saved then
Liberty Hall Academy from financial
ruin in 1796 when he gave the
school its first major endowment
gift—$20,000 worth of James River
Canal stock. The donation—at
the time the largest to any educational institution—continues today as part of the
endowment.
Robert E. Lee saved then Washington College from obscurity after the Civil
War by serving as its innovative president from 1865 until his death in 1870, and
instituting such programs as the School of Law, the nation’s first school of journalism,
and the revered Honor System that continues to play a major role in W&L life.
More than 95 percent of W&L’s full-time faculty members hold doctorate or
other terminal degrees, and all of them are, first and foremost, teachers. And with
an average class size of just 16, W&L students clearly benefit from that expertise.
W&L features a highly-ranked School of Law that has been an integral part of
the school since 1866. Approximately 120 students receive Juris Doctor degrees
each year and five receive Master of Laws.
With a student body that represents nearly all 50 states and attracts citizens from
50 other countries, W&L is truly an international institution set in an idyllic college
town. USA Today described it this way: “If you close your eyes and conjure up the
ideal campus—red brick buildings with rows of white columns, a placid commons
beneath the arching branches of ivy-covered trees, a small town of 19th-century
storefronts—you’ve got Washington and Lee.”
