use their green<br />

fingers for good<br />

Getting their hands dirty for charity,<br />

the Peebles Community Action<br />

Network (CAN), in Scotland, are using<br />

their gardening prowess to help feed<br />

those in need. Tending to fruit and<br />

veg patches (and the needs of others),<br />

volunteers are donating freshly grown<br />

produce from their community garden<br />

to a local food charity.<br />

The Food Foundation is using the<br />

generous donations in its mealson-wheels<br />

service and, so far, an<br />

incredible 100 meals have been<br />

delivered to vulnerable members of<br />

the community.<br />

Speaking on behalf of the charity,<br />

operational manager Yvonne Mclaren<br />

said: “We are very lucky to have such<br />

fresh ingredients provided on our<br />

doorstep, and are really grateful to the<br />

people of Peebles CAN for helping us to<br />

feed the community.”<br />

Not only are CAN volunteers helping<br />

their local community, but they are also<br />

helping themselves, too. Research from<br />

King’s Fund has shown that gardening<br />

truly is the gift that keeps on giving, as<br />

it promotes mental wellbeing, reduces<br />

depression and anxiety, and improves<br />

social functioning.<br />

What better excuse to dust off those<br />

trowels and get digging? There has<br />

never been a better time to get back<br />

to your roots, give back, and grow<br />

something new.<br />
