Well they say you can’t keep a good 

man down and we’ve certainly proved 

that with Fred Henderson in this 

issue. After the announcement that Fred was 

retiring his biro we were inundated with fans 

of Fred’s page and thankfully he has agreed 

to write the odd article for us. Agree with him 

or not, Fred always speaks his mind and his 

features always create a talking point. 

In his feature over on page 22, Fred asks 

whether it’s about time we started moving 

forward as a country, pushing on with business 

and industry. It’s certainly a hot topic of 

discussion in all areas of business up and down 

the country. I certainly agree with him. As 

long as the necessary precautions are taken 

and guidelines met there is no reason why the 

majority of companies across the UK cannot 

now open and start trading. 

After a frustratingly long wait, the UK event 

industry got the green light to start operating 

again as from 1st October. Sadly this coincided 

with our original Tow Show dates, so after 

negotiation with the TIC we have managed 

to push this year’s Tow Show back into late 

October. We’ve taken feedback from both 

exhibitors and visitors with the overriding 

feeling that as long as we’re allowed, and with 

the necessary guidelines met, the show must 

go on. 

As key workers during the worst of the 

pandemic, recovery operators helped keep

time for the political side of the recovery 

industry to start a new chapter.

New NHSS17/17B 

Digital Identity Card 

for National Roadside Recovery Scheme 

In issue 326 there was a promise to keep Professional Recovery readers abreast of the investment 

that the IVR make for its members and for the wider industry. 

In this issue the IVR is delighted to introduce the new National Roadside/Recovery Scheme digital 

identity card. The new digital identity cards provide an up-to-date snapshot of your training and 

company compliance, all held digitally at your fingertips. 

Those operators who are part of 

the National Highways Sector 

Scheme 17/17B (NHSS17/17B) will be 

aware that as part of its Administrator 

role, the IVR already issues technician 

identity cards. These are mandatory for 

all operators on the scheme. The cards 

display the individual’s details on the 

face of the card and his or her training 

qualifications on the reverse. This current 

card system, although it functions 

perfectly well, has its limitations and a 

modernised electronic identity card has 

been under consideration for quite some 

time. 

Following extensive research, it was 

decided not to outsource the supply 

of these digital identity cards to a 

commercial company, but to secure the 

scheme ownership with the IVR, keeping 

it within the rescue and recovery industry 

and re-investing any surplus income 

generated from the card scheme back 

into the industry. The freshly branded 

IVR RQM digital identity card is the 

NHSS17/17B National Training Scheme card 

and is the only card able to display the 

NHSS17/17B logo, it additionally offers the 

industry some flexibility on what can be 

stored on its digital chip. 

To achieve this, the IVR has partnered 

with a local technology company that 

specialises in a range of solutions 

designed to manage mobile workforce’s 

training and compliance records. They 

are an ISO9001 and ISO27001 certified 

company ensuring that those standards 

are maintained in everything they do. 

Smartcard technology and mobile apps 

play a big part in most of their headline 

projects, providing workforces with 

portable, up-to-date information that 

can be checked wherever and whenever 

needed. Their existing customer base 

includes well recognised brands such as 

Highways England, Transport for London, 

Network Rail and Thames Water. 

IVR Vice Chairman, Mark Hartell explains 

that; “The IVR VR01, VR02 and VR03 (Core 

Modules) are a solid benchmark for the 

industry’s minimum standard, accepted 

by PAS 43 and the NHSS17/17B National 

Roadside/Recovery Scheme (NRRS). 

It is mandatory for all staff engaged 

in NHSS17/17B to hold a valid scheme 

identity card and there has always been a 

minimum standard to qualify for a scheme 

card. That minimum standard of the IVR 

VR Core Modules remains unchanged with 

the new IVR RQM digital identity card. 

There is no need to complicate matters by 

adding additional training; this would only 

add additional and unnecessary expense 

to the industry.” 

The Card 

As with the existing card, there are 4 

levels of credentials: 

1) Roadside technician (non-recovery) 

2) Recovery technician 

3) Approved instructor Level 1 

4) Approved instructor Level 2 

Each cardholder receives two cards: 

1. A physical plastic identity card. A plastic, 

credit card size card, printed with the 

card holders photograph and basic details 

on the face of the card. Held digitally 

within the card is the card holders training 

certificates and optional key company 

compliance information. 

2. A virtual smartcard which is issued 

directly to a technician’s smartphone 

when they download the free app.

physical cards. 

The Power of the Data 

The data held within the digital chip is 

flexible, it can include not just NHSS17/17B 

records but company insurances, PAS43 

certificates, ISO9001 certificates, other 

relevant training in fact anything that 

is deemed necessary to operate in a 

rescue/recovery business. 

The power of the card, means that 

there is full control over cancelling or 

suspending a card with immediate effect, 

if a card is lost or stolen or, in the case 

of a company sponsored card, if a staff 

member has left. Key advantages of the 

card are that it can hold far more data 

than its non-digital counterpart, it can be 

updated without the need to return old 

cards or issue new cards – removing any 

updating fees and saving valuable time, 

adding new information can be almost 

instantaneous. 

Why Go Digital? 

When a technician presents either the 

physical or virtual card for checking, 

the verifier will be able to access its 

full contents including records and 

certificates with one tap using either a 

card checking device or a smartphone. 

On first use, the card checker will need 

to download a free app in order to view 

the card contents. 

There is an option to check a 

technician’s card details remotely, using a 

verification code, it can also be checked 

before a technician arrives at their 

destination and with VRO permission, it 

can be checked remotely by auditors, 

saving on ‘in-workplace’ auditing. 

Vulnerable motorists can even identity 

check technicians, using their smartphone 

to scan through a closed car window, 

safeguarding both the operator and the 

motorist. 

Applying for a Card 

To apply for an IVR RQM digital identity 

card simply visit the IVR website, click on 

the RQM tab and your virtual identity card 

can be live, as soon as your application is 

processed, with your physical card being 

processed immediately thereafter. 

If you are a company sponsoring a 

number of technicians, then register your 

company through the IVR website, click on 

the RQM tab and add your trained staff. 

In both cases there is an annual fee 

of £20 plus VAT per card and the IVR will 

already have the technician’s NHSS17/17B 

training records on file, so there will be no 

need to supply those training certificates. 

Free of Charge Cards for Current 

NHSS17/17B Card Holders 

For those who already hold an 

NHSS17/17B NRRS card your replacement 

card is free of charge providing you have 

2 or more years left on the registration 

life of your card and providing your IVR VR 

core modules are in date then you will be 

entitled to 2 years free of charge. Simply 

apply through the IVR website, ticking the 

current card holder option. 

The existing NHSS17/17B technician 

identity card, will be phased out over the 

coming year. 

If it is as company sponsored card and you 

want to order replacements for all your 

staff then contact the IVR office to discuss 

your options. 

Updates to the IVR RQM Card 

Updates on the card are free, except 

when an operator moves card type, e.g. 

a roadside repair technician, moves to a 

roadside repair and recovery technician. 

(Red card to blue card). This will incur a 

£10 plus VAT fee.

How to install a 

GPS tracker in 

30 seconds

installed them themselves and often complained about how long it

There is a wealth of experience at Millers of Longton, a 

company with over 40 years ago to cater for requests 

to winch out vehicles for customers of an agricultural 

business founded earlier by John Miller. John manufactured his 

own products, with booms, winches and rear legs adapted to 

the meet the requirements of the area, an area spanning from 

motorways to the coast. 

Talking to John you can pick up all sorts tips on how to tackle 

the most difficult jobs, leaning against the recovery vehicle to 

feel how the truck is performing, spreading ‘cow shit’ on the 

road because it reduces friction when pulling sideways are just a 

couple of tips that he passed on in the past. Today it is John’s son 

Jack who has had the benefit of all his fathers experience, and 

it is Jack who has modernised their fleet to include some of the 

latest equipment Boniface has to offer. 

The Century 1150 is a recent acquisition, it replaced the 1140 

Millers had used for the last five years, both of these had been 

installed on Volvo chassis, the latest a FH16 750 with five axles, 

hub reduction, crawler gears, all the features that a recovery 

person will understand. The truck is equipped with lighting to 

illuminate the recovery scene from all directions and has beacons 

to warn passing traffic of its presence. 

The 1150 is the mid-range rotator from Boniface who have now 

five differing capacity versions in the range, which is currently 

topped by the M100, the biggest rotator on the market today. The 

1150 is the most popular having replaced the 1060, it has similar 

reach and power when extended but is lighter than the old 

model. The use of the high strength material and modern design 

and manufacturing techniques that are available to Boniface’s 

parent company Miller Industries facilitated making a rotator that 

can winch, lift and crucially tow efficiently. Making the 1150 the 

ultimate all-rounder, a statement that is supported by the fact 

that Miller Industries produced 98 in 2019. 

The front stabiliser legs are derived from one of Boniface’s 

innovations, the Sidewinder, there shape lends them to fit around 

the second steering axle, they provide the same footprint for 

stability as the standard rotator legs they are equipped with 

two 16 tonne winches that can be deployed to both side of the 

recovery vehicle. The boom is equipped with 20 tonne winches 

which are two speed and are automatically sensed between 

lifting and winching changing the factor of safety from 4:1 for 

lifting to 2:1 for winching. 

Boniface manufactured the body from stainless steel and 

shaped it to provide the best use of space thus allowing the many 

accessories required to cater for the type of jobs Jack Miller and 

his team encounter to be carried. The whole package adds up to 

a great looking vehicle, a credit to Jack Millers attention to detail, 

Boniface’s engineering and the Century 1150 Rotator.

Plan to tackle a 

Recession 

It’s fair to say nobody saw this coming, at least back in early 

February they didn’t. Past recessions have slowly crept up on 

society, some might disagree but with the UK now out of the 

EU and the country in the transition period we could get back 

to looking after good old blighty and not worry so much about 

what the EU were going to force on us next, but no, COVID had to 

come along and overnight devastate the country’s economy. 

Companies large or small have to very quickly understand 

the financial ramifications of the pandemic and the long-term 

effect it could have. So now is the time to look at the potential 

roads to recovery ‘no pun intended’ during this period of market 

uncertainty. All aspects of the rescue and recovery industry 

face different questions. Dependent upon your stakeholder 

position, independent operator, work provider, insurance broker 

or perhaps even a finance company, you will all have different 

questions to ask or answer. From drivers, controllers and admin 

staff, some of the larger companies could have to answer 

questions from the board, investors, the regulators and all the 

different stakeholders looking at a wide variety of topics. 

Topics such as job volumes, customer demands, fleet strategy, 

replacement policy, liquidity, supply chain stability, for the 

recovery industry that’s a big one, but also don’t lose touch with 

your training and compliance obligations, they are often the first 

things to go out the window, don’t fall into that trap, it could cost 

you dearly. 

I guess the focus here is on the independent operator. Have 

you invested in that well engineered Apex RMS system, if so, have 

you set all the back-office parameters to tap into all of that freely 

available data? The data that can help you better analyse the good 

work from the bad, the profitable work against the efficiency 

limitations and what’s the ramifications if you ditch the not so 

profitable work. In patch work verses out of patch work, make 

every job work in your favour, what you refuse today might be a

backload or a double-up tomorrow, but don’t take the job just 

because it’s offered to you, now is the time to be selective. 

Do you know your best and most profitable corridor of work, is 

it within a small radius of your main base, or is it those services 

just up the road? Whatever, stop the dead mileage and get 

drivers to standby at designated strategic outposts. If you were 

to analyse your dead mileage per day, week, month or year, you 

would be gobsmacked. If you were to add all those unnecessary 

miles I bet it could pay off some of the finance on one of your 

trucks. 

Think ‘Green’, and set some drivers rules and only leave a truck 

idling when you have to, it’s almost in a drivers D&A to leave his 

truck idling, we all know there are times when that’s necessary, 

lights on PTO running, but encourage all your drivers to cut-out 

that unnecessary idle time, once more you would not believe 

the saving. If you have the ability to analyse that data, then why 

not start a league table on fuel saving and pay a monthly bonus, 

maybe the winner gets meal for two at the local steakhouse. 

Take a look at the different strategic models your business 

could adopt, adjusting driver shift patterns, utilising a full-time 

workforce verses some part-time workers and not only drivers, 

control and admin staff as well. Plus mixing the 24-hour control

function with part-office based and part-home 

working, now the home working has proven to 

work well for most through the main lockdown 

period of COVID and as we know for some 

that will become an everyday change that will 

probably never alter. 

Financial modelling takes a look at all the 

options available to you and even if you’re a 

small business don’t discount how you manage 

your finances. Whatever you do don’t lose 

focus on the basics, now there will be some 

professional recovery magazine readers who will 

not like this, but one of the biggest problems 

during any recession is ‘cashflow’ and managing 

that age debt list and forcing your average 

payment period down as far as possible needs 

to be one of the main focuses of your finance 

departments. It’s all well and good having the 

well-established brands and household names 

within your work portfolio, but if they constantly 

owe you in excess of their 10 to 14-day turnover 

number then you need to get tough with them 

and insist on regular payment keeping any age 

debt to a minimum.

have noticed a pattern over the last few issues,

focus was on the issues the recovery industry 

was facing as COVID-19 was only just evolving. In 

fact I think Paul printed the first IVR COVID-19 

Protocol and within days we were on version 3. 

When I look back, within four months the entire 

shape and size of the industry has changed, I 

think we could say it’s changed by a generation 

and those IVR Key worker cards reported on 

at the end of April in issue 323 helped the 

industry recognise the industry as essential 

workers during those difficult lockdown days. By 

the beginning of May I suggesting the industry 

stepped back and looked at itself and evaluated 

the business model it had been working for over 

50 years, as quoted by our now retired Fred 

Henderson. 

Jump forward to now and you can see the 

pattern that was emerging, the writing was on 

the wall, but without saying it, the time for the 

recovery to make changes to that operating 

model has to happen because just around the 

corner was a recession. No clever prediction 

needed by me, No if you shut down the 

economy as Government and the world had 

to, then a recession was always inevitable, this 

time we will be lucky if our next generation of 

recovery operators are the ones to see us out 

the other side of it, as its predicted it could take 

a decade to trade our way out of it. 

Risk or Reward, the last issue 327, the 

heading was a bit tongue in cheek, mainly 

because a large number of operators strongly 

believe the risk to start carrying passengers in 

the driver’s office, as let’s face it, it’s as good 

as their office, especially when everyone else 

is still working from home, will unnecessarily 

put everything at risk and for some commercial 

suicide and not worth the small reward I’m told 

some are offering! 

The recovery industry will never have a 

better opportunity to change ‘what it does’ 

and ‘how it does it’ to see the reward. The 

what it does question? Well it recovers vehicles

doesn’t it? So, what about the passenger, yes, what about the 

passengers. Remove them from the vulnerable position and 

secure an alternative arrangement for them. Take the car back 

to your recovery storage yards and pool the cars and recover in 

multiples, reduce dead mileage, maximise you’re rescores and 

manpower and target yourself to always work efficient. One thing 

COVID has done for the recovery industry is to highlight the cost 

of carrying passengers, often a bit like a taxi service and not only 

taking the person who holds the breakdown membership, but a 

car full of family and friends, something in the past that has been 

questioned by the regulators. 

For far too long the industry has been driven by overestimated 

customer expectation that really doesn’t exist, an expectation 

created by insurance policies that are over sold and undervalued 

just to stay competitive, with that cost of competition bourn by 

others. They are expectations that again I have recently reported 

on, but now the reality must sink in. We are about to enter the 

worst recession for over 300 years as quoted by Rishi Sunak 

Chancellor of the exchequer, so that change in business model I 

spoke about has to happen or the independent operator network 

will shrink faster than ever. 

If you are one of the larger household names, think about 

and respect the independent operator, don’t discard them, 

only to use them to suit and cover the excessive volume spells, 

or to deal with the oversized van, or the crumpled suspension 

that’s difficult to load and subsequently off-load, and as for the 

time consuming journey across London or any other city that’s 

gridlocked for that matter. 

I do keep repeating myself, but to simply relax the attendance 

time for the jobs that are not causing an obstruction, or are 

not leaving somone in a vulnerable situation, pass the customer 

management of that job to the operator. This will enable them to 

better manage their fleet, increase productivity, anything to help 

with a survival plan. If that small change meant every truck within 

your fleet could manage an additional one or two jobs a day, over 

the period of a month it would in affect be like adding another 

truck to your fleet. How simple would that be, and it will cost no 

money at all? 

This pandemic has changed everything we do, and made the 

everyday activities 10 times more difficult, now the recovery 

industry has to add even more misery to find that ‘road to 

recovery’, sanitise the disabled vehicle you are about to recover, 

every time, now I won’t mention sanitising your cabs after every 

recovery, because you’re not meant to be carrying customers, 

yes that two metre rule still applies to transport, there’s good 

advice out there, just look at the different websites, details 

below. 

To finish, let’s not forget there are a couple of big events 

just around the corner, Brexit and now were out of the EU and 

going through the transition period, what’s the added impact 

to the industry after transition? Don’t forget, we also have the 

London ULEZ to deal with, the clock is ticking, are you ready, or 

perhaps a better question are you ready to fight? As I think the 

industry should fight, not for an exemption but fight for a fair and 

reasonable ‘sunset period’ and while we’re doing that in London 

don’t forgetting the other clean air zone restrictions on all the 

other cities and towns around the country. 

This recession is here and here to stay for a good number of 

years, this industry must stop and consider its options, not to 

just meander down the same old road, it has options and it must 

exercise them, and introduce ‘simple changes’.

New phase for CSRRR 

At the 2018 Tow Show, I was proud to 

launch the Campaign for Safer Roadside 

Rescue and Recovery. 

This followed an incredibly tough year for 

the industry when, in 2017, three separate 

vehicle recovery operators lost their lives 

working on the roadside in the space of 

three months. In starting CSRRR, I had a 

series of goals in mind: 

1. For the industry to have a voice to speak 

at the level of government. 

2. For the recovery industry to be 

recognised and respected as an 

essential service 

3. To stop the roll out of Smart Motorways 

until their safety had been investigated 

4. To set up and APPG to represent the 

recovery industry in Parliament 

5. To achieve a platform to communicate 

to the public the essential service 

recovery workers provide. 

6. To promote better understanding of 

the industry within the Department for 

Transport. 

7. And, finally and most importantly, to 

stop vehicle recovery operators to stop 

being killed at the roadside 

8. To secure a serious Government review 

into the use of ‘Red Lights’ 

These were wide-ranging aims but they 

were necessary and overdue for this 

industry. 

In order to pursue these goals, I enlisted 

the support of political consultancy Tendo 

Consulting. I was put in touch with one of 

the directors of Tendo, Peter Carroll, by the 

late, great Dave Gregory. Dave’s hope was 

that Peter’s political nous and numerous 

contacts in government, parliament and 

the media would help elevate the recovery 

industry and give us the profile we deserve. 

Engaging the services of a professional 

lobbying company lime Tendo involves cost. 

But nearly every industry that wants their 

voice heard by Government does it. And 

the reason why? It works. And the service 

provided by Peter and Tendo has been 

central to everything the Campaign for 

Safer Roadside Rescue and Recovery has 

achieved since launching in 2018, including 

all of the following: 

1. Forming an APPG in Parliament 

specifically focussed on recovery issues. 

Chaired by Sir Mike Penning, the group has 

the support of over 40 MPs from across 

the political spectrum and from all corners 

of the United Kingdom 

2. Running a national campaign 

spearheaded by Sam Cockerill with 

numerous media appearances in local, 

regional and national outlets both print and 

broadcast. 

3. Numerous interventions in Parliament by 

Tracey Crouch MP supporting the call for 

Red Lights 

4. Persuading the Government to launch 

a comprehensive review into Red Lights. 

The Secretary of State for Transport is 

personally aware of the importance of this 

issue due to the parliamentary work of the 

APPG. An independent consultancy has 

been engaged by Government to carry out 

the critical parts of this review. 

5. Putting pressure on the Government 

and Highways England over their stance 

on Smart Motorways including the APPG’s 

work featuring in a hard hitting episode 

of Panorama. This led to construction 

being paused while an evidence review was 

carried out. 

6. A message from the Secretary of State 

for Transport, Grant Shapps, recognising 

the vital work the recovery industry does. 

The Campaign for Safer Roadside 

Rescue and Recovery has achieved all the 

eight goals listed above. This is thanks 

to all those that supported myself and 

PROF. What we have achieved couldn’t 

have happened without those who have 

contributed financially, including Ben 

Johnson from Call Assist, Chris Keady from 

LV= Britannia Rescue, Mark Debenham 

from Allianz Global, Creative Solutions, 

the IVR, Stefan Hayes from the NTDA, Red, 

Bollington, APEX and many others. 

Special thanks must also go to Andy 

Lambert, Mike Cowan, and the trustees 

of RISC. Without their financial input and 

personal dedication CSRRR would never 

had got off the ground. Also I would 

like to put on record my thanks to Sir 

Mike Penning MP and Tracey Crouch MP, 

their efforts on behalf of the industry in 

Parliament has been so important. 

We have done all of this while living 

through Brexit, the first Christmas General 

Election since 1918, and now a global 

pandemic. It is tremendous achievement. 

Now it’s time for Tendo’s work to 

enter a new phase. In this new phase, 

the emphasis will move away from the 

public facing campaign and focus more 

on Tendo continuing to support the vital 

ongoing work of the APPG. And this is 

an opportune time for a wider cross 

section of the industry to support them 

in their vital function as secretariat to the 

APPG. Control of the Campaign for Safer 

Roadside Rescue and Recovery and the 

website will move to Tendo, who may from 

time to time use it as a vehicle to further 

the cause of the recovery industry on 

any future issues and in their continued 

work as the Secretariat of the APPG for 

Roadside Rescue and Recovery. I have 

full confidence in Tendo to do the best by 

the recovery industry as I have since we 

started this journey nearly two years ago. 

I will continue to fight for better safety 

and more recognition through the work of 

PROF, and will remain in close dialogue with 

Tendo to ensure that the recovery industry 

has its voice heard where we can.

PROFESSIONAL RECOVERY OPERATORS FEDERATION 

Difficult times, life changing decisions, a possible second 

wave on the way - SAME OLD RECOVERY INDUSTRY! 

The rescue and recovery industry has done a fantastic job 

during the current crisis and it is still current! 

We have continued to deliver a 

fantastic essential service, even 

though support from certain 

quarters has been sparse and selfindulgent. 

Working with the independent 

work providers PROF and the IVR agreed 

and delivered COVID-19 work procedures 

and tried to advise you on best and safe 

working practices, which to be fair have 

stood the test and so far protected our 

staff, the members we serve, and our 

businesses. 

In my humble opinion nothing has 

changed to dilute the very stringent 

guidelines set out, which to an extent 

have been mirrored if not complied with 

by other sections of our industry. I’ve 

heard many VRO’s complaining about lack 

of support and being let down by certain 

work providers. Then many of them 

have let themselves down by not only 

pandering to the fresh demands of our 

esteemed brands, breaking the law while 

doing so. 

The independent work providers that 

support this industry through thick and 

thin are the life blood of what we do, and 

without them there would be no industry. 

The buck stops with us, in supporting 

them and making them a more viable 

option. The more customers they win, 

the more first call work this industry 

retains. 

One thing COVID-19 has both taught 

and forced upon us is survival without 

their support. 

If your still here and you’ve survived 

a lock down pandemic without their 

support, you can certainly survive a 

winter without them. But could they 

survive one without you? Everyone has to 

make their own economic decisions and 

choices, but look at the bigger picture 

when doing so. 

Airlines have collapsed, cancer 

patients turned away, our children not 

taught, our loved ones laid to rest alone 

without us. Road transport not MOT‘d 

yet still customer expectations in the 

recovery industry seem to remain high 

and unrelenting. I’m not saying we should 

lower standard or customer services, but 

we have to remain realistic, economically 

viable, and most of all SAFE and 

sustainable for ourselves and the network 

we provide to our work providers. 

COVID 19 has taught everyone to 

accept what’s reasonably acceptable 

and not to judge our services but 

to appreciate the services we have 

continued to provide as key workers. 

There is a real threat of a second 

wave, in some areas there is already one. 

Together we have survived the first wave 

of COVID-19, we must work together to 

survive whatever follows next. 

PROF continues to consult with and 

discuss the current situation with all 

of the major work providers. Green 

Flag, Call Assist, Allianz, LV Britannia 

Rescue, who remain accessible and 

pragmatic. The IVR give massive input 

into safety procedures, training and risk 

assessments. Together we try to provide 

guidelines and they are simply guidelines 

into best working practices at the 

roadside.

APEX continues to provide vital statistics of our diminishing 

workloads, which helps us to look at our own business models. 

The Strategic Partnership, with Highways England initiated 

by PROF at last year’s Tow Show, continues to bear fruit, and 

through dialogue with Highways England I have been able 

to have constructive communications with the NPCC, most 

importantly regarding the movement of passengers in their 

vehicles. The letter I received was clear and concise and was a 

big help in giving the industry guidance on how to proceed. The 

letter is on the PROF website. 

I am pleased to say constructive dialogue continues with 

Highways England, and it was my pleasure to take part in a 

recent meeting with Highways England that included all of the 

recovery industry strategic partners. The discussions were 

important and constructive, and I even agreed with someone 

from AVRO! It felt good for us all to be working together on 

common issues that affect us all. 

Points raised in the governments stock take on smart 

motorways, which I am proud to say was brought about by the 

excellent CSRRR campaign, are already being discussed and 

addressed. 

Vehicle recovery in progress signs are being introduced, the 

size and spacing of ERAs are being analysed and addressed. My 

personal favorite; ‘Improvements in communications between 

the industry and Highways England Traffic Officers, looks certain 

to be on the horizon’. Those are just some of the positive 

highlights we have been discussing. 

I have to admit that so far working and communicating 

with Highways England has been a refreshing and positive 

experience, especially when you consider that less than a year 

ago we were at complete loggerheads. Long may it continue 

and I look forward to sharing some of the positive points being 

discussed with Sir Mike Penning , who is unrelenting in his 

efforts for safer roads and Smart Motorways, PROF and our 

strategic partners will strive to make sure we can meet our 

objectives. 

So now a national executive body is being formed at both 

regional and national level by Highways England and I am 

looking forward to the first meeting, which I believe will be in 

September, and will be followed up at the Tow Show In October, 

God and COVID-19 willing. PROF is also continuing to push TFL 

on the Expansion of the ULEZ zones in London. This affects us 

all, as London is fast becoming a no go area. This is an issue we 

all need to be on the same page. 

The CSRRR has been instrumental in achieving the goals 

we set out to achieve in 2018 but there is still much work to 

be done. Whilst we have achieved a parliamentary review of 

Red Lights which was our original goal, political pressure must 

continue to help deliver them. 

Whilst CSRRR achieved the government stock take to 

investigate their safety, between the strategic partnership and 

Highways England we must continue to deliver the changes 

which have been announced. 

And for the national profile achieved both on national TV 

and in the national press, not least my appearances on the 

BBC and Sky news, achieved by the campaigning of CSRRR, 

PROF and the APPG, must maintain a positive professional 

and productive profile that continues to deliver a safer united 

professional recovery appreciated by the public and respected 

by government. 

As Chair of PROF it is now my job and that of my colleagues, 

the new structure of which will be announced soon, to build 

and deliver on the foundations created by the campaign and I 

believe we are already doing that.

Dynes take delivery of 

a Boniface Street Lifter 

As part of their continued renewal and expansion 

programme, Dynes have recently added this Boniface 

Street Lifter to their fleet. 

Mounted onto a new 14 tonne Volvo FL6 chassis the Boniface 

Street Lifter features lowered front wheel wells which reduce 

overall height of the casualty and also pull out rear greedy 

ramps that allow long wheelbase vans to be carried without the 

bodywork being too long and a rear winch. 

The vehicle is also equipped with a Fassi F190ATXP14 T crane 

with radio remote control, hydraulically operated super extra 

wide outriggers and supplementary rear outriggers which have 

LED marker lights fitted to them for extra visibility at night. 

The crane has two extra functions piped to the end of the jib 

to operate the hydraulic levelling and rotation of the 3500kg 

capacity damage free lifting frame. An in-cab touch screen 

control panel operates all of the equipment’s electrical functions 

including work lights, beacons and also provides a height warning 

system for the operator. 

Being a very experienced operator, Dynes also specified this 

particular build with two pairs of aluminium Lamborghini bars 

and a set of hub lifters as well as the usual wheel clamps to cater 

for every possible situation. The vehicle is also fitted with a 360 

degree camera system and numerous other accessories that 

make it unique to Dynes.

Back on the road to recovery 

2020 started like any other year for RT Williams Vehicle 

Repair & Recovery based in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. 

The mild winter months were met with the torrential 

flooding in February but nobody could have predicted the 

devastation that would emerge in March when Covid-19 

gripped the UK and devoured the economy. 

“It was totally unexpected and shocking how quickly things 

progressed in March in relation to the virus. I kept watching the 

news and each day the situation got worse until lockdown came.” 

said Lyndon Williams, proprietor. 

“As a ‘Covid-19 Critical Contractor’ to Welsh Ambulance NHS 

Trust for the repair, maintenance and recovery of its fleet in 

South Wales, we knew we were in for a very difficult time. Our 

greatest concern was obviously the welfare of our staff and 

keeping the virus out of our operation, which would have been 

detrimental to our performance.” 

“Early March we purchased a lot of PPE and cleaning materials; 

masks, nitrile gloves, coveralls, hand sanitiser, disinfectant and 

antibacterial sprays and wipes which we are still using today. We 

restricted access to our premises, stopped taking passengers 

in our cabs and stopped our apprentices going to college. Every 

day we cleaned our premises and trucks with disinfectant and 

antibacterial sprays to avoid contamination.” 

“By the 23rd March when lockdown was officially declared we 

were fully prepared for the next couple of months and our staff 

have been amazing. It was very difficult reassuring everyone that 

we could safely work through the pandemic especially when the 

Government and media were telling everyone to ‘Stay Home’ but 

we managed to do it.” 

“After lockdown was declared everything changed and the 

country went silent, the telephones stopped ringing, there was 

little traffic on the road and our once busy commercial workshop 

had plenty of time to service our own vehicles for once. It has 

been such a frightening time for businesses and the uncertainty 

will continue for many more months to come.” 

“We have invested heavily over the last five years in updating 

our recovery fleet and our commercial workshop. Although our 

plans for 2020 have been hindered we still managed to purchase 

a new addition to our fleet, a Mercedes Atego Slidebed 15 tonne 

recovery truck which is proving a great asset.” 

“We are optimistic about the future but understand it is going 

to take time before things return to normal but what has been 

so encouraging is the level of support we have received from 

our customers including Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, 

Welsh Blood Services, Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council along with 

a number of Independent vehicle assistance providers such as 

Emergency Assist and Call Assist who have once again stepped up 

to the mark supporting their contractors.”

The cure is worse 

than the disease 

It now seems that without doubt after 

six months of Coronavirus activity, or 

inactivity, it is becoming apparent that as 

the saying goes ‘there is more than one way 

to skin a cat’ and the big question is, as time 

goes by, will we all have been seen to have 

taken the right course of action? 

Have we punished ourselves unnecessarily 

and unduly? Have we created mental illness 

and despair in many older people or was 

it, in fact, the only course open? Whether 

the Government instruction has been right 

or wrong, there is one thing for sure, they 

have put the fear of God in everyone, to 

the point where it was inferred we would all 

catch the virus and many people would die. 

200,000 was suggested at one time, unless 

we followed the daily repetitive instruction 

and now, of course, like Brexit, it depends 

which point of view from the health experts 

you chose to align with. Like Brexit, if you 

were ‘leave’ you would like what one party 

says and if you were a ‘remoaner’ you would 

perish the thought of the opposite side. 

On the subject of the virus, the thought 

sways from one extreme to the other. 

Should the restrictions now have been more 

targeted since I am told a person under the 

age of 20 stands more chance of winning 

the Lottery than dying of Coronavirus. 

Whereas those over the age of 70 appear 

to be on borrowed time with over 73% of 

fatalities being in that age group and 90% 

with underlying problems. So, why has the 

rest of the nation had to give so much for 

so few? The truth is very few of the working 

population are at risk of death provided they 

are in good health and not overweight. 

Now we are seeing a slight resurgence, 

mostly among the younger workforce, as 

infections reappear, if what I read is correct. 

There doesn’t appear to be the same surge 

in deaths that we saw in the beginning or at 

least nobody has said anything. Could it be 

that this latest surge is, in essence, no worse 

than a dose of flu. Perhaps Prince Charles 

was a more typical example than Boris who 

was quite ill whereas Charles was back on all 

cylinders in a few days, despite being in his 

70’s. Talking about being kept up to date, we 

rely on the BBC and expect full up to date 

news but are stuck with their biased version 

of events, report the gloom and doom but 

avoid the overall picture. 

I know older people who have crucified 

themselves rather than break lockdown, 

whereas some younger people have had total 

disregard. A lot of businesses and schools 

could have easily continued with common 

sense, a bit of social distancing and the odd 

mask. 

It appears that the main course of action 

should be to protect the vulnerable and we 

all know who they are. Otherwise, was it right 

to close so many businesses and close the 

doors of all the schools? Now, of course, 

human nature being what is, no-one wants 

to go back to work when they can be paid 

for sitting at home. A head teacher near us 

has been effectively sacked because she 

had trouble getting some of her teachers 

back to work and then referred to them as 

lazy, which is not allowed in this politically 

correct age. The situation has also lead to 

people being furloughed then told we have 

not missed you, so resulting in redundancy. 

Quoting from one of these experts; “The 

pandemic virus cannot be halted, it ‘revs’ 

up and goes forward, taking everything in its 

path but then ‘peaks’ and peters out, leaving 

stragglers for a long time afterwards.” and 

that is what we are seeing now. 

There is no doubt the Government has 

been successful in flattening the curve which 

has reduced the strain on the NHS but it 

appears to be just about the same number 

of infected or fatalities, whether it is in the 

same month or spread over a few months! 

I quote from Luke Johnson, a respected 

Sunday Times Journalist, who says: “It seems 

we are too easily led and should take a more 

realistic attitude towards our basic freedoms 

and our right to earn a living and conduct our 

daily lives in peace. It all matters because an 

overly risk-averse society is not one which 

prospers or offers opportunities. Unless we 

recover our confidence and enthusiasm 

for life, we will compound the destruction 

caused by the pandemic.” 

Probably the biggest sign of indecisiveness 

is the decision to now impose the wearing 

of masks left, right and centre as the virus 

decreases, whereas when it was on the rise 

and people were coughing and spluttering 

everywhere, masks were deemed to be 

pointless. We cannot afford any longer to 

wallow in a state of dread, cowering at home 

as the country falls behind on every measure 

of civilisation that counts - unproductive, 

diminished and pathetic. 

Remember we have the capacity to 

reconstruct our lives, but first we need to 

muster our courage and apply ourselves like 

never before.

We must do what we 

can to remain positive 

We still find ourselves battling through the daily news reports and 

an ever-changing situation, let alone ever-changing world. As 

more of the lockdown restrictions are lifted, I am sure many of 

you like me, will be thinking ahead and trying to predict just where 

things are going and what does the future hold for us. 

We have found ourselves 

getting used to constantly 

hearing the words pandemic, 

unprecedented, virus, vaccine, antibodies, 

social distance, face masks, hand sanitiser 

and let’s face it, who this time last year 

had ever heard the word furlough? 

It is simply unimaginable what has 

hit us all since March 2020 and the 

challenges and pressures that has come 

with it and put upon us. The reality is 

that we are in this situation and we are 

for the foreseeable, so it falls on us to 

not look back, but do our best to look 

forward. Where is it we go from here? I 

can only imagine that there is a lot of soul 

searching going on within our industry at 

this time and some big decisions to be 

made as we eventually come out of this 

crisis. Unfortunately, the only certainty we 

have is that coming out of this crisis will be 

far more difficult that it was going into it. 

We must do what we can to remain 

positive, it is what it is, and we can only 

play the hand we’re dealt, and we will all 

have to adjust to what is becoming ‘the 

new normal’. 

I am hearing from our members that 

workloads are starting to increase once 

again as more of the lock down measures 

are lifted. I note from the figures supplied 

to AVRO each week that workloads across 

the industry are increasing, but certainly 

not at a fast pace as many would have 

thought and predicted. As we move into 

what would usually be the big summer 

get away and we are finding more people 

opting for the ‘staycation’ hopefully we 

will see this impacting on the industry 

workload for the better and we see the 

increases continue. 

I can be accused of trumpet blowing, 

but again I have to say how very proud I 

am of the sterling effort that has gone into 

AVRO’s response to the COVID-19 situation 

and how it has represented its members 

during this time. I do not mind admitting 

it has been and continues to be a difficult 

task and we have pulled out all the stops 

to ensure our members are represented 

and their voice is heard. The time and 

effort being put in by my colleagues on 

National Council and the Management 

Team has been unprecedented, all of 

whom commit their time freely to AVRO 

and its cause. 

I don’t mind saying again that it was a 

great delight to have made direct contact 

with the vast majority of our members, 

all of which were supportive of AVRO 

and grateful of the efforts being put into 

representing them. 

Passengers / PPE 

On the 22nd June 2020 AVRO wrote to 

all work providers asking for support for 

our members in respect of carrying of 

passengers and the additional costs of 

PPE and vehicle sanitisation. We received 

a positive response from a small number 

and have seen action being taken by 

those such as Britannia Rescue who 

have introduced a supplement for their 

operators who are carrying passengers. 

On that I have to say well done to 

Britannia Rescue who have once again led 

the pack on this and taken action, they 

did exactly the same in bringing back an A 

and B rate and increased mileage rate a 

number of years back. As always it could 

be argued such rates are not enough, but 

credit must be given to those who step 

forward and at least do what they can do. 

I have to also add that on a negative point, 

there were many work providers that have 

not replied to our communication and I 

find this very disappointing. 

Carrying of passengers has become a 

difficult circumstance of the COVID-19 

situation, something that was very 

routine before COVID is now very much a 

concern. We will shortly be releasing the 

results of the latest AVRO survey which 

focused on what members are doing 

in respect of carrying passengers and 

provision of PPE. 

What is clear, is that we all must change 

and adopt to the new normal, many 

businesses across the whole economy 

are facing additional costs of PPE, 

sanitisation, and other varying financial 

impacts. The difference with our industry 

is that it simply cannot sustain the financial 

burden while operating on the margins we 

do. Many operators are fittings screens 

to their vehicles, a good move and allows 

them to continue to transport passengers, 

but with it comes a considerable cost and 

sanitisation of the vehicle after use also 

comes with a cost. There are those who 

are carrying passenger in certain vehicles 

where social distancing permits but are 

mitigating exposure with the use of PPE, 

but again this comes with a cost which 

must be recouped and not burdened 

upon the operator. With that there are 

many operators who continue not to carry 

passengers in any form and at the end of 

the day every one has to do what is best 

for their business and take the action 

necessary to maintain the health and 

safety of their employees and customers. 

Each operator must assess which is the 

best course of action for their individual 

operators, but I must stress to you, if you 

are carrying passengers, by any means, 

please ensure you are doing it safely and 

any mitigating action you have taken, 

ensure your insurance are fully abreast 

but also please do ensure that you are not 

taking on the burden of the additional cost 

this presents. You must ensure that this is 

recouped, otherwise it will only add to the 

financial burden upon yourself. 

Government Support 

It may not be in all the right places and 

although the Government furlough 

schemes have end dates announced on 

them now (October 2020 for UK and 

August 2020 for ROI) there is still support 

available such as Business Bounce Back 

Loans as well as other support. Further

industry on 9th June 2020 calling for the 

roadside recovery industry to be included 

as standard in any business rates relief. 

We received a reply from Stephen 

Barclay MP Chief Secretary to the Treasury 

acknowledging our request and details the 

full business financial support available 

In respect of business rates relief and 

awarding of grants, of up to £25,000, I 

am hearing back from members who are 

applying to their local authority for this 

and the message is rather inconsistent. 

Some members have been granted relief 

and a grant and others refused. My advice 

is to continue to push your local authority 

and explain your situation in full along with 

the financial impacts your business has 

faced and the crucial service it provides. 

I am hearing positive reports from several 

members who after first being refused 

and then appealing to their local authority, 

and including their local MP, have then 

been successful. So please do not fear in 

continuing to push, at the end of the day 

you can only be told no.

We have all come across the irritating 

“White Van Man” in our lives. You 

know the person, he/she dashes from 

place to place as fast he/she can, delivering 

and collecting goods for people. We see this 

occurring every day, but it does appear to be 

that every van driver seems to be tarred with 

the same brush. It is as if people see just the van 

and not the significance of what is written on the 

side. 

The term van originally comes from a 

contraction of the word ‘caravan’ and the 

first form of this mode of transport originates 

from 1829 which was a covered horse drawn 

vehicle used for the transportation of goods.

can also assist with lost key entry, AdBlue re-filling, basic tyre 

related issues and fuel problems. For any dashboard error lights, 

we have recently become an authorised distributor for Autel 

Vehicle Diagnostics and all our vans are armed with their MaxiSYS 

diagnostics tablets. This equipment will enable us to log any fault 

or error codes ready for the dealer if we cannot perform a reprogramme

of these vehicle types is becoming of greater importance as 

they allow us to despatch a lighter resource to a job that doesn’t

to close by saying, during this difficult time we are all experiencing, 

it is important to continue to practice safe guidelines whilst we

rules where appropriate.

The holiday season is upon us and Britain’s 

roads will be full of holiday makers 

excitedly making their way to their chosen 

destinations. When holidaying in the UK, one 

of the most popular forms is caravanning. This 

booming industry now contributes more than 

six billion pounds to the UK economy every year 

and with most families now choosing to holiday 

in the UK due to the Covid-19 situation, this will 

only grow. 

In 2019 it was suggested that there were over 

one million leisure caravans in use in the UK, with 

more than two million people taking holidays 

in either a caravan or a motorhome. This is not 

surprising, as many of us can attest to seeing an 

increase in these types of vehicles on motorways 

and near beauty attractions situated up down 

the UK. 

Towing a caravan safely requires a certain 

knowledge by the driver of the tow vehicle. First 

of all, the driver must have the required category 

on their licence which includes the size of the 

caravan or trailer that you’re allowed to tow. The 

criteria’s to follow are very strict but necessary 

due to the dangers of towing a caravan and 

not obeying the rules attached. For example, 

you must not overload the car or caravan. You 

must understand the combined weight of the 

loaded car and loaded caravan/trailer must be 

below the maximum ‘train weight’ for your car. 

You can find that information on your Vehicle 

Identification Plate on your car. 

There is no specific training certification 

that operators need to acquire as it is covered 

within the IVR VR6 light vehicle transporters 

accreditation, but this form of recovery does 

require expert knowledge of dealing with 

potential oversized vehicles. Depending on the 

situation and the assessment from the scene, an 

operator must make sure that a driver with the 

correct licence is in attendance, as this can have 

consequential transport issues.

who regularly tackle this type of job and what 

equipment they employ to extricate these types 

of vehicles.

when we arrive, it comes as a bit of shock, to 

say the least. The difficulty of this situation 

is not just the wrong vehicle may have been 

sent, but also, the driver may not hold the 

correct licence to be able to continue with 

the rescue, so it’s imperative that we get the 

correct information so avoiding this type of 

situation. Our fleet is currently in excess of 50 

vehicles and includes a number of 14 tonne - 

16 tonne crewcab transporters. These are the 

vehicles that we mainly use on these types 

of jobs, but on occasions where a caravan 

has overturned, we will need to bring in a 

heavier vehicle to right it safely. On arrival, 

our main priority is the safety of the family, 

so as soon as is safe, we move the family 

out of the danger zone and into our vehicle, 

our driver can then safely begin work on the 

recovery. All our drivers are equipped with 

what we call a ‘personal recovery kit’. This 

will consist of ancillary equipment needed 

for a roadside rescue. Part of the kit includes 

a 7 to 13 pin adaptor in the event that the 

caravan we are hitching is an older model 

and has a 7 pin socket. Our vehicles are 

equipped with multipurpose tow hitches so

Pooles Towing and Recovery 

Dave Poole from Pooles Towing and Recovery spoke about 

‘when caravans go wrong’. Dave said, “The recovery industry 

often throws up some interesting jobs and on occasions, these 

jobs can be more taxing than most. Recalling one recently, we 

received a job from a club through the usual channels. It was 

for a car and trailer broken down on the M56, so I dispatched 

a vehicle to the location. About 15 minutes from first being 

allocated the job, we received an update alert advising that 

it wasn’t a trailer, but in fact a caravan. Now, this can cause 

major issues if, as on this occasion, your resource is already 

in transit. You may have tasked an unqualified driver whose 

licence will not allow them to drive anything heavier than 

3.5T, so if the caravan was a big hefty dual axle unit, he would 

be unqualified and so wouldn’t be able to complete the job. 

Luckily, our main vehicles are 7.5T Mitsubishi Canter slidebeds 

and our driver is in possession of a Class 1 licence, so all was 

dandy I thought. Then I receive a phone call from my guy, who 

had arrived on scene advising me of an issue with the tow bar. 

The customer’s caravan was fitted with an AL-KO towing hitch 

which poses a problem if you have a conventional tow ball. 

In short, you cannot use a standard tow ball with an AL-KO 

hitch, you will need a proper AL-KO tow ball because the neck 

part is further away from the flange to stop the larger hitch 

from fouling. We have attached to my Ford Ranger an AL-KO 

system, and so, I contacted the contracting club and kindly 

asked them to set up a second job so that I could attend the 

scene and complete the recovery. Unfortunately, after around 

40 minutes of back and forth chat, the club elected not to 

sign off on the second job and I was forced to abandon the 

recovery of the caravan, but just complete the recovery of 

the car. It must be clear that we had no choice but to leave 

the caravan as, without the authorisation, I could not go 

to assist. To make matters worse, the club then allocated a 

second job to another firm, in which time, some unscrupulous 

opportunists decided they would steal the caravan from where 

we had to leave it. The moral of this story is, always make 

sure you get the correct information and towing instructions 

from the club when you call and speak with them. This was an 

unfortunate situation that could have been avoided had we 

known from the outset exactly what type of recovery we were 

being tasked to do.”

Mark McLuckie of Elite Recovery, Falkirk reports 

that although business was very, very quiet 

especially during the first month of the COVID-19 

shutdown, business has slowly been picking up 

again. 

He said: “We have coped alright with the 

situation, it’s not been easy, but we were able to 

manage things. We tried to limit the impact of 

the restrictions on both our staff and our clients 

and we were able to do this. 

“We had to put some staff on furlough 

and although most of them are back at work 

as normal we still have some of our staff on 

furlough, but we expect to have them all back at 

work in the very near future. 

“At present we are back to 80% of our normal 

work volumes and we will be back up to 100% 

capacity in the very near future.”

things are very quiet up here and whilst they were very, very quiet 

for about four weeks, in truth, we never really stopped. Well, 

you never know when you’ll be needed in the vehicle recovery 

industry. 

“As I say, it slowed down for a little while but we are now nearly 

back up to full capacity now. Our roadside repair teams are very 

busy. Mind you to be honest it was great having the roads to 

ourselves when we were out and about on our recovery jobs, but 

now they are all back out there on the roads, driving like crazy.”

Blair Atholl 

Blair Atholl Garage’s Derek Crighton reports that in line with 

most other vehicle recovery operators, they have had a slow and 

difficult time during lockdown. 

“It’s perhaps been especially difficult for us as our area is very 

dependent on tourism and obviously with the ban on tourism that 

impacted on our business. Easter weekend, for example, when 

we’d normally expect to be extremely busy we only had three 

recovery jobs. 

“It’s still a bit slow, even now, but things are slowly picking up. 

We took the decision to keep our workshops and 24 hour 

recovery operating as we have clients who need us to be there 

for them, plus key workers who rely on us. Some of our recovery 

vehicles never even turned a wheel in six weeks, it was so bad. 

Our workshop was reduced to half a day rather than a full day 

and we had to furlough some of our workers and kept things 

ticking over with a skeleton crew. I have been helping out myself, 

too. We still have some staff on furlough at the moment, but we 

review this on a daily basis. 

“We were operating at 5% of our normal workload. 40 to 50% 

of our work is tourist-related, so the loss of tourism has 

impacted us severely. As I say, we are slowly recovering and 

we’re at about 75% of our normal workload, though it’s a case of 

day-to-day monitoring of the situation as a great deal of tourist 

events in the area have been cancelled including an event where 

the forest is illuminated with lights. 

“I doubt we’ll be back to full capacity before the end of the 

year, it’s just a matter of closely monitoring the situation, but I 

understand it’s been tough for just about everyone else in our 

industry.”

CVS Recovery 

Unlike many other operators in the vehicle recovery industry 

CVS 24 Recovery decided that they would not go down the 

furloughing staff route. Andun Price told Professional Recovery 

magazine: “It was a decision we took very early on not to 

furlough any of our staff. We have our garage and workshops 

and several other irons in the fire, so we took the decision to 

re-jig our staffing requirements. 

“We have introduced measures to deal with COVID-19, for 

example we have installed special screens in all of our crew 

cabs.” 

He went on to say: “Business is slowly beginning to pick up, 

but we have noticed that although daytime workloads are 

nearly back to normal for this time of year our night time jobs 

are still much lower than normal. 

“We are the only vehicle recovery operator who employs a

When removing or installing studs, it’s 

important not to damage the threads. 

This new stud remover and installer 

from Laser Tools (part number 7804) lets 

you remove studs from cylinder heads, etc, 

without damaging them. It also lets you install 

new studs tightly and firmly without damaging 

the new stud threads and enables a torque 

wrench to be used if required. 

Four sizes of remover and installer are 

provided, covering the most common head and 

manifold stud sizes: M6 x 1.0, M8 x 1.25, M10 x 

1.25 and M10 x 1.5. To remove a stud, screw on 

the remover 

until the outer nut section reaches the stud 

tip. Now turn the inner section anticlockwise 

until the stud is removed. The stud remover 

grips the stud firmly without compressing or 

damaging the threads. 

When fitting a new stud it needs to be firmly 

seated and again, we don’t want to compress 

or otherwise damage the threads. Screw the 

correctly-sized installer onto the new stud 

until it reaches the internal ball and won’t 

screw on any further. With the installer now 

locked firmly onto the stud, screw the stud 

into the stud hole. Now torque the stud to 

the manufacturer’s specification. Unlock the 

installer with the supplied 6mm hex key — the 

installer can now be easily removed leaving 

clean, undamaged threads on the stud.

fit neatly in the tool tray. Available now
