Village green project back on track
• By Bea Gooding
COVID-19 may have slowed
progress down at the Bishopdale
Village Green project, but in
spite of the delays its organisers
are working hard to ensure its
completion by the end of this
year.
The Bishopdale Beautification
Project group jumped back
into action once the lockdown
ended and have since installed
the concrete work required to
house picnic tables and wooden
seating.
The open space was in dire
need of a facelift and now consisted
of a colourful footpath,
mural, water fountain and the
planting of cherry blossom trees
– all of which were completed
last year.
Bill Greenwood, of Enliven
Bishopdale, said the project had
been in the works for nearly two
years and that community spirits
remained high in spite of the
pandemic putting a spanner in
the works.
“It’s been brilliant fun working
with the community on such a
great project,” he said.
A large, concrete chequerboard
to play draughts or chess will be
constructed, along with a hopscotch
court, in the coming weeks.
The chequerboard also doubled
as a storytelling area for
children once bench seating was
installed.
The project was supported
by the city council and the
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board, but it was
run by the Bishopdale Community
Trust and the Enliven
Bishopdale Group.
The community board also
granted $10,000 for community
groups to use to make improvements
to the Bishopdale Village
Mall and will be shared across a
number of projects at the site.
Once completed, Greenwood
said the village green would be
an important community asset
and hub as it will be utilised by
and Community Centre.
“We’ve been working with the
community to get added value
by having local sponsorship,” he
said.
“We’ve so far had great support
from local businesses; Allied
Concrete has been phenomenal.”
The Bishopdale Village
Green is due to completed in
November.
