Your Local Views
Providing clarity on policy and decisions
From the board
David Cartwright, chair
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board
YOUR community board works
to improve your relationship
with the city council, providing
better clarity on policy and
decisions made, and having
better communication with
our residents can only aid this
outcome.
It’s been great to see more
sunshine this week particularly
as the school term reconvenes.
Along with the sunshine it has
also been reassuring to know
that the country seems to have
dodged a bullet regarding a massive
outbreak of Covid-19 virus
from a health perspective.
While many families have
been affected with the loss of a
loved one we are lucky compared
to many northern hemisphere
countries.
From an economic point of
view there seems to be various
schools of thought on the
severity of impacts and the time
frames involved.
Recent data on inner-city
spending is encouraging and,
hopefully, our borders will reopen
soon and we will be able to
greet overseas visitors again.
Personally, I am delighted
to see the Te Pae Convention
Centre near completion, plus
progress being made on the
Christ Church Cathedral and
multi-use arena.
Last week we saw the city
council vote on the draft Annual
Plan and the resulting increase
in rates. Your community board
had advocated for zero rates
increase given the impact of
Covid-19. We will continue to
oversee city council projects and
spending to ensure maximum
value is achieved for every dollar
spent.
One part of the budget that
is still available to community
groups, youth and organisations
is strengthening community
funding that supports well-being
and resilience. Applications can
still be made and you should
contact the city council for more
details.
In our last meeting on the
Monday, July 20, we heard from
some local residents as part of a
proposal to rename Avonhead
Park Cemetery to Avonhead
Memorial Cemetery.
City council staff will now
ask for approval for the name
change from the Ministry of
PROGRESS:
A name
change is
proposed for
the Avonhead
Park
Cemetery
while work
on Te Pae
is nearly
complete.
Health, unfortunately the time
frame around when this possible
change is unknown.
Recently we also awarded
several local residents and businesses
with gardening awards –
congratulations to everyone who
was involved.
Anyone can attend our public
forums and chat to us about
issues that concern you. You
can contact our community
governance team to make a time
to speak at an upcoming community
board meeting. Topics
range from trees, parking and
traffic concerns to protection of
our waterways.
On August 24, we are acknowledging
several unsung heroes
in our community services
awards.
I look forward to being able
to share their names and stories
with you next time.
