Letter from the Executive Director/CEO
Looking back to 2019, it is clear that we could not be
where we are today without the tremendous foundation
of support of which you are a part. We thank everyone
who has been such a loyal supporter of Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League.
In 2019, as we celebrated 94 years of service to this
community and to the lost, homeless, neglected, and
abused animals needing our care – more than 6,000 dogs
and cats were adopted into new, loving homes! Nearly
10,000 animals received affordable vaccinations through
our Wellness Clinic, while more than 5,000 free-roaming
community cats were vaccinated and spay/neutered
through our Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return program.
Peggy’s Pantry pet food bank fed more than 7,000
dogs and cats last year. More than 700 newborn kittens
benefited from our Kitten Nursery, the only intensive care
facility of its kind in South Florida.
Free spay/neuter surgery for all cats and for bully-breed
dogs, free behavior training classes for new pet owners,
more than 300 lost pets reunited with their families, and
a growing number of seriously ill and injured animals
saved by our Olivia’s Fund are all part of daily life at
Peggy Adams.
In all, we directly served 37,082 dogs and cats in 2019,
and we could not have done this without friends like you.

Major Milestone – Over 6,000 Adoptions in 2019
Champ, a Catahoula Leopard Dog,
was the 6,000 th pet adopted from Peggy
Adams Animal Rescue League in 2019.
“He’s a really sweet dog, a bundle of
energy, and adjusting well to his new
home in Port St. Lucie,” said Xavier
Newby, Champ’s owner.
“I saw many dogs but Champ really
caught my eye,” he said. “He was calm
and kept looking at me. Then he made
a little whine when I started to leave, so
he caught my heart.“ I said, “I’m going
to have to come back. It was pretty cool
when they told me he was the 6,000 th ,”
Newby said. “But even before I found
out about the milestone, I felt lucky just
to have been able to adopt him.”

our adoption program has been pretty
amazing in the last ten years.”

We do everything in our power to guarantee
the success of each adoption. The cats and
dogs in our care have been lost, surrendered,
abandoned, neglected, abused or endured the
death of their beloved owner. That’s why we
work hard to find the right match and support
the new owners through and after the adoption
process to make sure each animal’s next home is
a fur-ever home.

Phasma had an enlarged heart and her owner could no longer care for
her properly. She was surrendered on August 12, 2018 with her owner’s
prayer that she would find a home that could care for her illness.
Phasma was a real charmer. She became a staff favorite and queen bee in
the Peggy Adams cat adoption room.
She was with us for just under a year when she found her forever home.
Her owner’s prayer was answered.

Dot, pictured above with her new mom and dad, was adopted on
March 19, 2019 after years of neglect.
You see, Dot was one of the 38 dogs rescued from the home of an animal
hoarder in Palm Beach Gardens by Palm Beach County Animal Care &
Control and then transferred to Peggy Adams. Dot along with her brothers
and sisters were filthy, their coats were matted, and full of fleas. They also
had dental issues, skin conditions and needed to be spayed and neutered.
After several weeks of care, Dot was ready to be adopted. Her journey to
find a loving, caring forever family was difficult but,
as you can see, has a happy ending.

Quality of life starts with the quality of health.
Peggy Adams is the first animal shelter in South
Florida and one of only twenty-five in the entire
country to be accredited by the AAHA – American
Animal Hospital Association. Our 6 full-time staff
veterinarians and their medical services teams are
evaluated and continuously reviewed on quality
standards, ranging from patient care and pain
management to staff training and advanced
diagnostic services. The animals entrusted to us
receive the highest level of veterinary care available
anywhere.

Adams on December 28,
2018. She was seriously
injured and needed
immediate attention. The
6-year-old, 9 lb. female
Yorkie mix received
emergency treatment to
severe wounds on her
back and removal of a
mass from her mammary
gland.

Chula received intensive post-op care, including: antibiotics, pain
medication and daily laser treatments.
After two months, she was beginning to heal nicely and was ready to find
her forever home.
Chula was adopted on August 4, 2019 by a lovely family where she is
pampered, well cared for, and adored.

Humane Care
It has been said that our Humanity can be
judged by how we treat our animals. Caring
for the animals from the tiniest newborn
kitten weighing 3 oz. to obedience training
for a 100 lb. Great Dane; from fostering pets
recovering from surgery, to giving pet food to
families who lost their income. We care for them
as we would hope to be cared for.

Program
Newborn kittens separated from their mothers have little
chance of survival on their own. Many of these neonatal
kittens are brought to Peggy Adams Neonatal Kitten
Nursery when they are just hours old. These newborn
kittens can’t even walk, see or eat on their own. In order to
survive, they need 24/7 care – including being bottle-fed
every two hours by a rotating crew of staff and
volunteers. The Nursery, opened in 2016,
remains the only intensive care unit
of its kind in South Florida.

Emergency
Response
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is an
Emergency Placement Partner for animals
affected by natural disasters such as floods, fires
and hurricanes, as well as hoarding and puppy
mill situations.
We view the abandonment, loss or surrender of
an animal as an emergency for that dog or cat,
and do our utmost to find every animal entrusted
to us a safe, loving home.

Dear Peggy Adams,
We cannot thank you enough for accepting Bruce into your program.
Last year we began an ambitious outreach program here in Vieques,
Puerto Rico. Bruce’s house was our very first stop. The owner was
living in a condemned property with no running water or power. He
had 6 dogs chained and a mama with 13 puppies.
We usually try to support the owner so they can retain their pets,
but this situation was untenable. Bruce fell ill and at this point we
demanded the dog be removed and the owner handed him over.
All this big boy wants is human contact. We have been able to house
train him, but his mouthing and jumping still remain an issue. He
sleeps on the bed, he snores, and curls up for snuggles on the couch.
We absolutely adore Bruce, and I know with some training, someone
will fall in love with our Bruce.
He is a 70 pound lap dog, who does not have separation anxiety.
When he is left, he goes to his bed and lays down quietly until our
return. He would love to be adopted by an active person, long runs or
walks would suit his energy level well. But if no walks were available
that day, he will happily watch TV.
Again, thank you so much for taking our darling Bruce. We will miss
him terribly. We cried when the plane took off, and we cried when we
saw that he had landed safely into your care.

The 2019 Walk for the Animals
On February 23, 2019, a record-breaking crowd of more
than 1,800 animal lovers turned out for our 18 th Annual
Barry Crown Walk for the Animals. Our mascot Chloe, a former
shelter dog, led the walkers and their pets along the West Palm
Beach Waterfront.

distributed $1,981,218 in support of the animals in 2019. We extend our warmest thanks for the continued generous support of so many

In March of 2018, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League launched a capital campaign to build a new Pet Adoption & Humane Education
Center. This building, which will allow us to potentially save twice as many animals as today, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2020. Per
financial accounting standards, donations and pledges to the capital campaign are included in Revenues from Contributions, Grants, Events
& Retail, along with revenues supporting our annual operating fund. Cumulative capital campaign funds received are reflected within the
Net Assets with Donor Restrictions.

Happy Ending
Our final Promise is to work diligently, skillfully and lovingly
for the animals, while being good stewards of the trust and
resources you invest in us.
Alexis was adopted on January 16, 2019 after being cared for at Peggy Adams for 706 days.
She has settled in nicely with her new family and is working on getting into a daily routine.
Her dad, Richard, has jokingly commented on what a lazy girl Alexis is. When he tries to get
her to walk, she stops every few feet to sit and sniff. Alexis is now on a walking schedule with
her dad a couple of times a day. All the neighbors enjoy seeing Alexis on her walks and have
commented on what a “Friendly and cute dog she is.”

The Mission of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
of the Palm Beaches, Inc. is to provide shelter to lost, homeless
and unwanted animals, to provide spay and neuter and other
medical services for companion animals, and to care for, protect
and find quality homes for homeless and neglected companion
animals, to advocate animal welfare, community involvement
and education to further the bond between people and animals.
