The Waimakariri District Council approved draft policies on all threetogoout for consultation, at itscouncilmeeting on Tuesday last week. The meeting washeld in the Rangiora Town Hall function room after restrictionswere imposed on the Rangiora service centre building following arecent engineeringreport. Council staff plan to consult with the community on anew natural hazards policy in October, to update residents and local businessesonthe latest districtwide modelling of riskssuch as coastalinundation, flooding, coastalerosion and earthquakes. Senior engineering adviser Don Youngsays while modelling ‘‘is always based on assumptions, this is what we have now’’. ‘‘In terms of the risk,weare in the role of putting together the best information and we and our community are entitled to rely on that information.’’ The information is used to allow the council to set regulations around where to build, and building requirements. Mr Young acknowledged some property ownersand developers will seek thirdparty reviews specifictotheir property, which can leadtochanges.
