AN ENDURING HERITAGE

Today’s Nevada County craft breweries are heir

to a more than 150 year old tradition of beer

making.

Between 1856 and 1880, beer production in Nevada

County ranged from 44,000 gallons to

500,000 gallons per year, and by the end of that

time period there were a total of 41 saloons and

15 breweries in the Grass Valley and Nevada City

area. Grass Valley and Nevada City had four each,

Truckee had three, and there were additional brew

houses scattered throughout the mining camps in

North San Juan, Moore’s Flat, Eureka South, Washington

and Boca. Renowned for the natural spring

water in its lager, Truckee’s Boca Brewing Company

was celebrated at the 1883 World’s Fair in Paris.

The Nevada Brewery, built in 1882 by Chinese laborers

and Italian stonemasons from locally quarried granite

block still remains a prominent edifice in Nevada City. The buildings

where the old Washington Brewery and the Grass Valley

Brewery once operated from 1850–1920 also still stand.

BREWING UP SOMETHING CRAFTY

In a state of 6,300+ breweries, you just can’t argue the superiority

of craft beer in California. Nevada County is no exception.

In the last few years, our local craft breweries have

increased, and there is plenty of fine beer available. This area

is prime when looking for locally-brewed beer in all colors of

the beer rainbow.

NEVADA CITY/GRASS VALLEY BREWERIES

Three Forks Bakery & Brewing Co. has been satisfying locals

since 2014 with craft beer brewed in their 7 barrel brewhouse.

In 2019 they took first place for their Mother’s Beach

Blonde Lager in the Munich-style Helles category and third

place for “Purdon Porter,” at the California State Fair. The

brewery offers many seasonal beer selections in addition to

wood-fired thin crust pizza, pastries, desserts and in-house artisan

breads and hard cider to name a few tasty choices. The

open air dining out in front makes it an ideal place to grab a fresh

local brew and enjoy extraordinary food with friends.

Grass Valley Brewing Co. bills itself as the first brewery in

town since Prohibition, offering at least 12 classic and innovative
