Golden Days

Want to know more about gold mining

and the famous Pelton Wheel? A

good place to start is the North Star

Mining Museum (McCourtney &

Allison Ranch Roads). This historic

site contains 100s of mining artifacts,

a working stamp mill, a Cornish

Pump and blacksmith shop. Featured

is the largest Pelton Wheel ever built.

At 30 feet it is an awesome sight.

Visitors can see items used by

miners and their families, or walk

outside among examples of mining

equipment. Bring along a picnic and

cross over the creek to an area with

tables and benches.

A Star

Not to be missed is the North Star House (off

Auburn Road), a monument of sorts to an innovative

mining engineer, his author wife and a

famous architect. Designed by Julia Morgan this

10,000 square foot mansion was completed in

1905 and is an example of the California

Craftsman style. Currently it is under renovation

by a group of dedicated volunteers. The public

is invited to Open Houses & Tours, as well as

Construction Days where working volunteers

can answer questions on the renovation.

Into the Past

Another must see is the Grass Valley Museum

(410 S. Church St.). History comes to life in a

Victorian bedroom, restored classroom and a

turn-of-the-century doctor’s office. There are

displays of furniture, clothing and artifacts from

the Victorian era and a hall of photographs.

The museum is located in a former convent

that dates back to 1866. It housed Irish nuns

who founded an orphanage. Today, the convent

is part of St. Joseph’s Cultural Center,

which also includes a chapel and rose garden.

Mine Model

On your visit to Empire Mine State Historic

Park, be sure to explore the Visitor Center. It

formerly housed carriages and automobiles,

but now houses a display of gold samples and

an impressive scale model of the Empire-Star

Mine complex that dates back to 1938. See

page 27 for more information.
