THE PAST

To preserve the area’s

history, the Truckee

Donner Historical Society

was formed in 1968. It

operates the Old Jail

Museum and the Joseph

Research Cabin that

includes a library and

was a part of the historic

Gateway Motel built in

the 1930s.

Historic Site

Now a museum, the Old Jail (Jibboom and

Spring Streets) was built in 1875 and is one of

the few remaining original buildings in

Truckee. It is also one of a few jailhouses of

its kind in the west. Visitors can see relics

from lumbering, box manufacturing and ice

harvesting. There are exhibits about gambling,

bootlegging and the movie industry

which thrived in the 1920s. Tours are available,

and you are invited to picnic in the

Community Memorial

Garden behind

the museum.

depot on Commercial

Row is the Truckee

Railroad Museum.

Located in a caboose,

it brings railroad

history to life including

building of the

Transcontinental

Railroad, tourism by

railroad and the

logging industry.

There is also a children’s

area and nearby

rolling stock. The

museum offers guided,

self-driven Trestle

Tours of old railroad

lines in the area.

Sierra Stories

The Visitor Center at Donner Memorial

State Park (I-80, Exit 184) contains a museum

with interactive exhibits, including artifacts.

They tell the history of the area and the stories

of those who crossed the Sierra Nevada

including the Donner Party. See Pages 121

and 35 for more information.

Let It Snow

Located at Boreal Ski Resort (1-80 at

Donner Summit) is the Western Skisport

Museum that features ski history.

Unique Museum

Drive a portion of the 20 Mile Museum on

Old Hwy. 40 from 1-80 Eagle Lakes exit over

Donner Summit and below Rainbow Bridge.

Interpretive signs include history, historical

photographs, quotes, and each tells a good

story. To learn more about the importance of
