Donner PartyhistorY In the Gold CountrySierra ProvedDeadly ForEarly PioneersEst ablished California RouteMINERS WERE NOT THE ONLYpioneers to make the difficulttrip to California. Before goldwas discovered there were those whoset out across the plains to make newlives for themselves in the west.One such party included brothers Georgeand Jacob Donner, who along with otherfamilies began their journey in 1846. Alongthe way, they merged with another wagontrain, but as fate would have it, split offwhen encouraged to follow a new routecalled the Hastings Cutoff thus bypassingestablished trails. George Donner waselected wagon master.The decision became a disaster. They had tohack a road through mountains, were forced toabandon some wagons, and crossing the GreatSalt Lake Desert was extremely challenging.Supplies were running low.They reached Truckee Meadows near Reno inlate October and found some relief when oneof their party, who had been sent ahead toSutter’s Fort, arrived with supplies. The badnews, a difficult mountain crossing was ahead.Already behind schedule by several weeks, theexhausted group decided to rest for almost aweek. This further delay would prove fatal, forsnow came early to the Sierra that year.Rested, they pushed on. George Donner’swagon broke down at Alder Creek nearTruckee, and his party had to stay behind. Therest made it to Donner Lake, but snow keptthem from reaching the pass. The continuingsnow forced them to make camp at the lake.Cabins were built, and they settled in forthe winter.But, by mid-December, they were desperate forsupplies, and a party of 15 departed on homemadesnowshoes determined to reach Sutter’sFort 100 miles away. Under extreme conditionsthose who survived the trip were forced to liveoff the bodies of those who died. Only sevenmade it to safety.Two relief parties were formed, and on February19, the first one reached the lake with limitedsupplies due to heavy snow. They took out 23Hasting s Cutoffsurvivors, but most were too weak to make it,and 20 were left at what was to become knownas “Starved Camp.”The third relief party reached the camp March12, and then went on to the lake and Donner’scamp on Alder Creek. George Donner wasdying, and although healthy, his wife insistedon staying. The relief party also had to leavebehind those too weak to travel.A fourth rescue party set out in March, wasstranded by a snow storm and finally reachedthe lake to find just one survivor. He arrived atSutter’s Fort on April 29, 1847.In the end, 42 members of the Donner Partydied, 41 survived.
