Things to See and Do in Nevada City

1 A View into the Past

DURING 1874/75, a major project

was taking place in Nevada

County–a railroad was being constructed.

Affectionately known as Never

Come, Never Go, the Nevada City

Narrow Gauge Railroad would play a

major role in the community.

Railbus

Completed in 1876, the NCNGRR brought

in a variety of needed supplies. Gold,

timber and other local products were

transported out. It also served passengers

coming to and going from the area.

There was a festive side to the railroad as

well, for it took young people out to the

countryside for picnics and was used as

transportation to special events.

Running 22.5 miles from Nevada City to

Colfax, the narrow gauge had two steam

engines, four coaches, 15 box cars and 13

flat cars. It bravely made it through winter

snow and the rainy season, as well as fires

that destroyed railroad property.

In operation for 66 years, the railroad shut

down in 1942 due in part to closure of the

gold mines which were its most important

customers. More than $200 million worth

of gold had been hauled out during the

years it operated.

Today the Nevada County Narrow

Gauge Railroad Museum,

located at 5 Kidder Ct., is

preserving this important

part of Nevada County’s

history, along with other

local transportation history.

The museum is part of

the Nevada County

Historical Society. It is

open May 1–October 31,

Friday–Tuesday

10:00 am–4:00 pm.

Winter hours are

November 1–April 30,

Saturday & Sunday

10:00 am–4:00 pm.
