An in depth introduction to Historic Nevada County, California including Grass Valley, Nevada City, Penn Valley, Truckee and Sierra County.

BEFORE GOLD WAS discovered

pioneers seeking a better life in

the west came across a friendly

Indian chief who guided them through

the area near what is now the town of

Truckee. Thousands of emigrants used

this route to cross into California.

It wasn’t until 1863 that the first

pioneer settled in the area. Growth

occurred when the Central Pacific

Railroad was laying track in the Sierra

Nevada. They used over 10,000

Chinese who worked under dangerous

conditions.

The first train arrived in 1868. That year

fire destroyed the town. It was moved,

rebuilt and named Truckee after the

nearby river named in honor of the

Indian chief by early pioneers.

Lumber and ice harvesting was important

to the town’s early economy. In the

1890s, an ice palace with a toboggan

run and ice rink were built, and

Truckee’s tourist industry was born.
