2 Old and New

Head for Old Town, a favorite place to

wander, you might even hear a few train

whistles. History buffs will find a number

of buildings dating from the 1800s. Those

interested in the here and now will discover

fun places to shop and locally

inspired art.

3 Getting Fishy

Anglers should try Boca Dam and

Reservoir for a satisfying day of

fishing. Your catch can include rainbow,

brown and brook trout, plus

Kokanee salmon.

4 Hike Like a Local

Favorite trails with locals are found at

Johnson Canyon. Portions provide

incredible views of Donner Lake, as well

as a colorful array of wild flowers. The

canyon also offers cross-country skiing

without crowds.

5 Enjoy the Outdoors

bike, discover lakes and trails. In

winter and spring besides world-class

skiing, you can also go tubing, sledding

and snowmobiling or ice-skate.

6 Out on the Town

Join a happy hour for après-ski drinks.

Then have dinner in a memorable setting

like a casual supper club that serves

mountain cuisine, or enjoy rustic elegance

in a former ski lodge or experience

river front dining. After dinner, dive into

Truckee’s active nightlife.

Flowing through downtown,

the Truckee River is

a popular rafting and tubing

area during high water.

Equipment is available or

you can bring your own.

An alternative is to enjoy

the river’s shore at Truckee

River Regional Park–picture

barbeques, picnics or

just hangout.

8 Broaden

Your Horizons

Take day trips to Lake Tahoe 12 miles

from Truckee and Reno which is 32 miles

to the east. You will discover America’s

largest Alpine lake with magnificent blue

water. The trip to Reno can include casinos,

museums and a minor league baseball

game.

Old Hwy. 40

9 Explore in Comfort

You don’t have to be a hiker to see the

scenery that surrounds Truckee. How

about a scenic drive? For example,

drive old Hwy. 40 from the 1-80

Eagle Lakes exit over Donner Summit.

Interpretive signs highlight history and

beauty of the area.

10 Zone Out

If the kids get restless, spend some time

at the Kidzone Museum on Donner Pass

Road. They have a nature area, art studio,

indoor play structure, science lab, infant

area and more. kidzonemuseum.org
