NATIVE AMERICANS were the first to call Penn Valley home. Then in 1848

came miners, who it is believed formed the earliest settlement in

Nevada County.

Growth occurred, in part, because the area was located on a freight wagon route

between the mining region to the east and Sacramento. And occurred again

when discouraged miners turned to plows, and the valley became an agricultural

community.

Known as the “Pantry of the Northern Mines,” Penn Valley had some of the finest

land in the state and supplied fruit, vegetables and meat to the mines as far away

as Nevada.

It was also home to a dairy industry, and in the late 1800s, a creamery was built and

became one of the best in the state. All that remains is the rebuilt Butter Maker’s

Cottage in Western Gateway Park.
