Bridging the GapThings to See and DoSOUTH YUBA RIVER STATE PARKis made-up of sites along 20 milesof the river including a number oftrails. One place that should not bemissed is Bridgeport on Pleasant ValleyRoad not far from the center ofPenn Valley.This area was named for the many bridgesconstructed to allow goods to cross theriver. Part of the route was built by theVirginia Turnpike Company which wasorganized in 1855 primarily to facilitatetravel between Marysville and VirginiaCity, Nevada.The company collected tolls for use ofits roads. Following the destruction ofseveral bridges in 1861-62 due to flooding,one was replaced with a coveredbridge in 1862. Now the longest singlespan bridge in the world, it is beingrestored to its historical look and isexpected to reopen in early 2021.There is a lot of history at Bridgeport, forexample thousands of miners searched forgold in the river. There was a ranch on thesite where teamsters could find hay andrest for their horses.In the 1920s, the very popular BridgeportSwim Resort was developed completewith cottages and dance pavilion. Asmall grocery store and gas station werealso built.What’s Happening NowVisitors can swim, hike, pan for gold alongthe river, or explore a museum, historystations, historic horse barn filled withantique wagons and cemetery. Bird Walksare held in the spring and fall, WildflowerWalks on the popular Buttermilk Trail frommid-March through mid-May. For additionalevents check southyubariverstatepark.org.Bridgeport is open from sunrise to sunset.Visitor Center is open Thursday–Sundayfrom Memorial Day to Labor Day 11:00am–4:00 pm. The rest of the year it closesat 3:00 pm. All 88 acresare open to the public with lots to do. Facilities include an impressive stage pavilion,covered picnic areas, green lawns and rustic amphitheater. The park is the venue for ahost of events from festivals to weddings. Two notable features are a highly rated discgolf course and the evolving bike skills park.
