Living the Rural Life in South County

Remembering the Past

Today, the section of South County

bounded by Hwy. 49, Combie Road and

the Bear River is known as Higgins

Corners. It is the area’s center for services

and shopping, and home to the South

County Chamber of Commerce and

Visitor Center.

Living the Good Life

South County offers a variety of lifestyles

from impressive horse property, golf

course homes, farms and estates with

expansive vistas, as well as communities

ideal for putting down roots.

Lake of the Pines is a gated community

built around lakes and ponds that attracts

everyone from young professionals to

retirees. They enjoy boating, swimming,

fishing, the clubhouse and an 18-hole golf

course. Alta Sierra is a community off

Hwy. 49 located on 2,500 acres that offers

a wide range of home designs and settings.

The Alta Sierra Country Club features

a scenic 18-hole golf course which is

open to the public.

Take a Hike

Adjoining Alta Sierra are two popular hiking

trails. The Alan Thiesen Trail loops

through a nature preserve with forest,

small meadows and views. Rambler Trail

is a .08 mile out-and-back pleasant walk.

Things to Do

Play a round of golf at Darkhorse Golf

Club, a public 18-hole course, or head to

the Alta Sierra Country Club. Purchase

ready to eat fruit and vegetables offered

by the Jardin del Rio farmer’s market at

Combie Plaza. Get some exercise as you

explore the Bear River Recreation Area.

Good access is found where Dog Bar

Road crosses the river.

Active Community

Bear River High School can be called a

community treasure. For example, it is

home to a county library branch, and its

Performing Arts Center is available to the

public. The Bear River Recreation and

Park District should not be overlooked as

it impacts the community by offering a

number of programs for all ages.

Discover Back Roads

One scenic drive is defined by vistas and

vast meadows. If you explore some

smaller side roads along the way, you

might run into a herd of buffalo or a winery

and vineyard. Take McCourtney Road

from Grass Valley to Lime Kiln Road, turn

left, then right on Duggans Road to Wolf

Road, turn left to Hwy. 49 and left again to

head back.

Bear River at HWY 49

Driving up Hwy. 49 from

Auburn, the first Nevada County

“community” encountered is an

area known as South County.

An early settler was Michael

Higgins, an Irish immigrant.

He came to California in 1852

and mined at Placerville,

Georgetown and on the

American River. In 1860 he

moved to what is now South

County to farm and raise stock

on 160 acres.

An entrepreneur, Higgins was

also owner of the Globe Hotel

located in the area, and according

to reports of the day was a

site of much merry making.
