Orientation 2020
Welcome to the family!
My name is Kristen Rupert Davis, and I am the Director of Student Engagement
and Inclusion at CCAD. One of the best parts of my job is getting to welcome
new students, their families, and guests to campus during Orientation.
Although things look a little different this year, I am still so excited to
welcome you all to CCAD.
The CCAD community of students, faculty, and staff are unique and
extraordinary — you undoubtedly already know this, and that’s why you’ve
decided to join us! We are excited about the talent, passion, and creativity
you bring with you as well as what you will discover about yourself during
your time at CCAD. CCAD is a special place filled with people who will
inspire you, challenge you, and work alongside you to help you maximize
your potential as a creative and a student. I know you still may have
questions about what might happen this year, but please know that we at
CCAD are here to support you and keep you as safe as we can. I would
encourage you to bookmark ccad.edu/ccadtogether, where we are
posting all things covid safety for the CCAD community.
Once again, welcome to CCAD. I am so excited to have you here and I
cannot wait to see all the amazing things you accomplish over the
next few years.
Warmest regards,
Kristen Rupert Davis, PhD

We can't wait to see what you do here
Crack a book.
It’s the reason you’re here and the reason you’ll stay. Much of your time will be
spent on your coursework. It will be fun and productive as long as you allow for
your own balance of concentration and relaxation.
Catch a show.
Every week brings a new gallery show or installation opening either on or near
campus. Campus openings are free, and all students are encouraged to attend
and support their fellow students, faculty, and visiting artists. CCAD students
also get free admission to the Columbus Museum of Art, which is just a few
steps from campus. You should also check out any of the commercial galleries
in Columbus: Admission at these galleries is free and they’re glad to see
your interest in their exhibitions. Please note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
reservations may be necessary before your visit. Head to the museum and
galleries’ websites first before your pay an in-person visit.
Explore Columbus.
Columbus is packed with things to do. Within a few blocks you have access to
parks and gardens, boutiques, libraries, and restaurants offering food from
every area of the world.
Join Student Organizations.
The life of an art student can be hectic, but most of the best students find a way
to get involved outside the classroom. Studies show that the more students
interact with their peers informally or through extracurricular activities, the
stronger their chances are of succeeding in college. Student Engagement &
Inclusion gives you lots of possibilities to choose from. Check out the list of
what we have available at my.ccad.edu.
Make time to play.
Student Engagement & Inclusion works with the Student Programming Board
(SPB) and other student organizations to plan and carry out activities to keep
your life lively and interesting. Some are repeated every year, while others
come and go according to student interest.

Counseling & Wellness Center
How we work:
The Counseling & Wellness Center
(CWC) addresses mental health,
emotional, or interpersonal concerns
that might get in the way of your
progress and well-being at CCAD. We
support you as you learn how to think,
do, and thrive, so you can focus less on
problems and more on becoming the
amazing artist, designer, and human
you are here to be.
Who we are:
The CWC team is made up of mental
health therapists who are able
to diagnose and treat mental and
emotional health concerns.
When & where to see us:
• CWC open Monday–Friday,
9 a.m.–5 p.m.
• Located on the first floor of Crane
in the Student Affairs Hallway
Contact us at 614.222.4000 or visit
my.ccad.edu/counseling.
22
Orientation 2020
What we do:
• Individual counseling
• Group counseling
• Crisis intervention
• Collaboration with hospitals and
outside providers
• Consultation for students who are
worried about others
• Wellness education and
prevention programs
• Sexual and relationship violence
services and advocacy referrals
• Yoga and meditation class
• Referals to outside therapists
for certain specialized services,
higher levels of care, or if CWC
cannot accommendate all students
requesting services.
All CWC services are confidential
and free.
What students say:
“The way CWC handles their clients and
the environment provided for students
there are so relaxing. It’s a space to get
away from the world for a bit and focus
on yourself, and get in touch with what’s
bothering you. As humans we don’t take
time out of our day to genuinely reflect
and face problems head on, which is why
a lot of us find it uncomfortable to do so.
I think CWC handles situations like these
really well and gives us tools to face our
inner workings to the best of our ability.”

Residence Life
You’ll feel right at home and at the center of our
community in our residence halls. CCAD is dedicated
to its first-year residency requirement, which has
been proven to enhance students’ success and foster
friendships on campus. All new students must live in
the residence halls during their first year of enrollment
unless they qualify for an exemption. You must
complete an online housing application or request
exemption via the incoming student portal (Slate).
Schottenstein Residence Hall provides a close-knit
community experience for incoming students to make
meeting new people easy and get a great start at
CCAD. Design Square Apartments primarily houses
upper-level students, however we reserve up to 24
beds for incoming students.
Residence Life Staff
The residential experience at CCAD is overseen by two
professional staff members and 13 Resident Advisors
(RAs). The role of the RA is to make connections and
to ensure the safety and security of all residents. RAs
provide educational, social, personal, and professional
assistance and appropriate referrals as needed.
Housing Information
Housing applications, timeline of placement and
move-in, exemption requests, roommate requests,
hall and room details, and the policies handbook are
available at: my.ccad.edu/housing.

CCAD’s Student Programming Board is an organization dedicated to bringing
fun and exciting events, educational seminars, and social opportunities to
CCAD campus. By offering these opportunities, SPB hopes to build a
better community and be a better source for making students’ voices heard
on campus.
Student Government Association (SGA)
Student Government membership is an elected and very important leadership
position on campus. The members of SGA have the ability to effect change on
campus and address the issues and concerns of the student body as a whole.
Student Government Association is also responsible for allocating a yearly
budget to all registered student organizations.

Want to be a successful commuter?
Spend time on campus outside of
your classes: Attend campus events
and interact frequently with faculty,
staff, and your fellow students
getting to campus.
As a CCAD student, you have many
options for a commute. All CCAD
students can ride Central Ohio
Transit Authority (COTA) buses free
with their student ID card. COTA
route maps are available in the
Crane Center lobby. Plan your trip
online at cota.com.
Columbus and CCAD are both
bicycle friendly. For basic rules
of the road, visit
publicservice.columbus.gov/bike.
To get in touch with the Columbus
cycling scene, visit yaybikes.com.
Bike racks are provided at Design
Square Apartments, Schottenstein
Residence Hall, and across campus.
We recommend protecting yourself
with a U-lock for your bike. Also,
consider removing your seat or
wheel when you lock up your bicycle.
CCAD encourages carpooling and its
economic, environmental, and
social benefits.
If you drive to class, first collect
information about parking permits,
rules, and regulations from Safety
& Security in the Administration
Building. This info is also available
online at ccad.edu/campusservices.
Regular or overnight parking
permits can be purchased at One-
Stop Student Services in the Loann
Crane Center and picked up in the
Administration Building.
By purchasing a permit, you are
guaranteed an available space in
one of our campus lots. You are not
guaranteed a space that is most
convenient. Lots fill up quickly on a
first-come, first-served basis, so
arrive early to get your first choice.
Traffic in Columbus can be hectic.
Figure out two routes to campus
and download a traffic app for the
latest updates.
36
Orientation 2020
Anyone who does not live in CCAD housing
(on campus or through a master lease
agreement) is considered a commuter.
About 40% of CCAD first-year students
are commuters, and the vast majority
of undergraduate students nationwide
commute to school.

Eating on campus
CCAD’s main dining facility is The Market, on the first floor of Design
Square Apartments. Commuter meal plans are available and offer
45 or 75 meals per semester, as well as flex dollars to be used at
The Cafe or Ampersand Emporium.
The Cafe is located in the Crane Center and accepts cash or credit.
It sells coffee, grab-and-go food and drink items, and more.
Ampersand Emporium is located on the first floor of Design Square
Apartments and sells healthy snacks and drinks and carries lots of
CCAD school swag.
Vending machines are available throughout campus. There are
many places to eat off campus. You can also pack your own food and
snacks from home; it’s more convenient and less expensive.

Orientation 2020
Managing your health & wellness:
At CCAD, your health and wellness are important parts of your success. Let’s
be sure you’re ready to stay healthy and thrive as a student! To ensure that you
have all of the necessary information regarding a health issue, please complete
this information as it applies to you. You should not submit this to CCAD. Please
keep it with you as a personal record.
Important reminders & things to consider:
• Have at least two emergency contacts in your phone.
• Keep your insurance card accessible, along with a valid state ID and/or a
copy of your birth certificate.
• Let all of your health care providers know you are attending college.
Schedule your yearly check-up appointments, transfer your pharmacy
needs, and discuss prescription refill options.
• Does your insurance offer a virtual doctor for when you can’t make it to
your primary care doctor? Most insurance companies now offer virtual
access to medical professionals for non-emergency needs. Be sure to
check it out and download the app!
• If you do not have health insurance, contact studentaffairs@ccad.edu to
understand potential options.
We’re here to help, too!
To connect with a licensed mental health professional in CCAD’s Counseling &
Wellness Center, call 614.222.4000. The counseling center also has urgent
walk-in hours available or via online service.
