Uberheroes: Lockdown

killybawner

Few of us could have guessed at the start of the year that by March the world as we knew it would

cease to continue as it had done and words we weren’t used to saying such as social distancing,

lockdown and Covid-19, became everyday words. This pandemic has affected the world, touching our

lives beyond anything we could ever have imagined, like something out of a film or comic book…

This has been a very challenging time for everyone, with schools closing for many pupils in many

cases with little notice, with teachers working hard to get work out to parents, parents working from

home, leisure & entertainment venues closed. Uncertainty led to mounting fears as concerns of how

the virus would affect our families and friends, with internal questions unanswered as to how our loved

ones will avoid becoming infected, being hospitalised or passing away.

We knew that now more than ever we needed you to know that you could still contact us to chat about

anything. We wanted to help you better understand that your worries & concerns were normal and we

wanted to help you through creativity and self-education to discover the facts of Covid-19 not just your

fears. We wanted to support you while you your family and friends kept safe, and to help you to find a

way to make some sense of this in providing you with an outlet to share your experiences, fears or

concerns through the art of storytelling.

This, as with all of our comics, was created by you by taking part in our competitions to create new

villains - representing Coronavirus and Uberheroes to combat it; we were overwhelmed by the quality

of your designs, your attention to detail and by how many of you sent in your amazing designs. These

were sent to our judging panel who selected four designs to go out to public vote, with votes coming

from as far away as Europe, Australia & America.

Coroman and CoronaBot 2020 were the winning entries for the villains, with Curador and Sanso

RoboDog being voted as your new Uberheroes. You created the 20 pages of this comic and this was

based on your experiences of how the pandemic had affected your life. This story is based on your

family connections, your ideas, your fears and concerns, your hopes and dreams once lockdown is

eased, and the eventual production of a vaccine, ending the threat of this deadly virus once and for all.

We’ve loved your creative ideas and designs, your group input on your personal experiences have

been so inspiring to read and now to share with thousands of other kids across the country and

beyond – Thanks to you all for making this happen!

We’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this, our Twelfth issue.

This is

not good, need

to rally the

team!

Uber Alert!

Guys I need you

all online

immediately…

Good to

see you all.

I’m sure you know

what this is

about?

The world

has gone into

Lockdown!

Schools,

non-essential

businesses and services

have closed until

further notice…

...With only

frontline key

workers continuing

to go to work.

Thank you for

joining us, Khwam –

I’m just explaining

the situation to the

others! are you

feeling okay?

yeah I’m okay

but my doctor has

told me that I need to

Self-Isolate due to the

Covid 19 directive for

vulnerable people.

I’ll do

what I can but it

will be from home

unfortunately.

Yes, Best to stay

home and keep yourself,

and others, safe! Dominie,

Fortress and Vana are at

home sick too… So the

rest of us need to help

right away!

Veritas

and Oni, start

helping people to

get their groceries

and medicines.

On it Q, we will

also make sure

our team are

okay too!

Invictus, ensure

everyone understands

to protect the NHS that they

must stay home… Start helping

them to think creatively to

help them stay active and

remain positive.

We need to give

them ideas as to how

they can stay connected with

our family and friends as this

will help build resilience and

wellbeing… offering to help

others is a great way to

stay positive too…

sounds like a plan…

Leave it with me, Q as

I am more than happy to

get others involved to

help those most in need

in our local & wider

communities…

Hi, Guys!

Coroman and

Coronabot2020!

…and we have

others who will be

helping us out! I have

the pleasure of

introducing you

all to...

...Curador!

I Need you

to look at your

screens and you’ll

see who is behind

this pandemic….

It’s Like

extremely

dangerous!

The whole

world is effected by

this… they’re calling it a

pandemic! The last one

was a 100 years ago

when...

millions of

people died all over

the world from

Spanish Flu...

Whaaat….

Really, Mum is

this true?

No Sophie,

I don’t think it’s

true, they’re

teasing you!

Ignore them!

We’re in

lockdown, so we

help stop the virus

spreading. It’s just a

few weeks together,

without school or

work.

If everyone

does their part, then

the virus won’t be able

to spread so easily,

and will mean that

things can get back to

normal sooner.

Who are

you calling

a loser?

YOU ‘cause

you lost… Loser…

Loser… Loser…

Stop it! That’s

enough – no more

computer games, as

you just can’t

agree!

Don’t

worry…

And I’ll be

turning off the

internet too if you

won’t behave…

Goodness, it’s

only been a few

days and the

boredom is setting

in already!

But

everything

will be okay

Mum, won’t

it?

Who cares

anyway – I’m

bored of playing

PlayStation…

I do

hope so,

honey…

Hey

Sophie suds…

it’s time you

were asleep!

Aw why

what’s wrong,

Soph?

I just keep

thinking about

everything that

this coronavirus is

effecting, like

school…

That’s the problem,

Dad… I love school. I

haven’t seen my friends in

ages and now I don’t know

if I ever will. I didn’t even

get to say goodbye

properly.

I can’t

sleep Dad…

But Soph,

no-one’s going

to school because

of this

Lockdown.

Oh Soph, don’t

worry; you will

see your friends

when this is all

over!

But what

if that’s too

late??

I’m already missing

out on loads of stuff

that I was excited about.

Like my P7 class photo…

our end of term party and

signing each other’s

shirts…

it’s my last year

at Brookfield Primary

before I go to big

school and I don’t even

know if anyone is going

to be at the same school

as me. Daddy I just

wanted it to be

special!

Och darlin,

sometimes

life means that we

have to do things we

don’t want to do…

but think about it

this way…

just like your

Auntie Beth, we need

to do this to protect

her and others so that

we can get back to

normal sooner!

isn’t it better

to do this now so

that our behaviour

helps the Doctors and

Nurses who are trying

to heal people of

this virus...

I’ve been

looking forward

to the final term

since I was

in P5!!

Will Auntie

Beth be safe? And

will everything

ever be back to

normal??

She will be fine,

remember some things

may change, and change

for the better, but you

don’t have to worry

about any of this!

Now try and

get some sleep...

it won’t help you to

feel better and more

positive if you’re not

sleeping…

they think

social-distancing

will kill me, but we

have plans to cause

more destruction

than they can

imagine!

Good night,

Sophie Suds.

Night, Dad…

love you

They can plan

and prepare all

they like… but I’m

just getting

started!

Sanso,

here boy!

Let’s get to

work helping

others in the

community!!

Thanks,

Guys!

Get well

soon,

Khwam!!

Here’s

some supplies,

Dominie!

Thanks,

Veritas!

Hope

this helps,

Vana!

Thank

you so

much.

You’re

Welcome,

Fortress!

Yes, the

supplies were

needed, thank

you!

Community Help Group

HARMONY

Can anyone provide spare food and

supplies for the Uberheroes to distribute?

Darren

We have some spare canned food and hand

sanitiser. We will leave it at the door for you to

collect.

Natasha

Plenty of spare toilet rolls …

Jenny

My sister and I would be happy to help!!

Some Personal

Protective Equipment

for you, this pandemic

means that hospitals, Care

Homes and Hospices need

all the PPE we can give

them…

Hi everyone,

please remember

to stay at least

two metres apart,

we need to

protect the NHS …

Social distancing

will help protect

us all!

People have been

amazingly generous;

they’ve organised online

additional help in

preparing and delivering

care packages across

the city.

Oh Curador,

thank you, we

desperately

needed these!!

Excellent

work, the more

help we can get

the better.

Maybe you could

help the keyworkers

to train the volunteers

so we can protect

everyone involved?

Will do,

Invictus!

Finished your

Homework,

Sophie?

Yes,

all done

now!

Hey suds –

I’ll be in in a minute,

but I still need to get

my outdoor clothes

off and leave them in

the garage so I don’t

bring anything bad

into the house…

DAD?!

Sophie, you

know we have to be

careful – Dad has to get

a shower before he can

touch anything or

anyone.

Mum’s right,

soph - we need

to keep us all

safe…

I know… but

I only wanted

a little hug,

Dad!

By taking all

these precautions,

Sophie, we will play

our part in helping to

stop the spread of

this virus

If we all do

what we can to try

to make sure we don’t make

even 1 other person ill, it

will be really hard forthe

virus to spread. It’s what

the experts call

the R rate.

Coroman is

using CoronaBot 2020

to spread this deadly

virus and plans to

enlist very possible

villain he can to cause

panic and fear.

Hurry up

Dad!!

I hate that

I can’t hug you

when you come

in from work.

Well you’ll

get plenty of

hugs now,

Suds!!

Coming

now!!

The number of infected people

has risen again today. People

have been asked again to stay

at home and to socially

distance when going out…

With all the measures taken it

looks like the lockdown is

helping decrease the spread

of the Virus and Lockdown

predicted to end in 2 weeks…

NITV 7:16

R NUMBER ON THE RISE

Dad, the TV says

it’s getting worse,

but the newspaper

and online says

the opposite…

Is it

getting

worse?

Don’t worry,

Sophie – remember

that’s why Dad gets

changed outside so we

can all stay safe so

there’s nothing for you

to worry about.

Are you

going to get

infected in work

and are we all going

to get ill too?

But who is

telling the

truth?

I’m really

scared as no one

seems to know

what is really

happening…

Good job,

guys!

it’s working!

George, we’ve

brought you to this

ward, so we can look

after you and treat

you for Covid-19

Where

am I… Cough

Cough… going

now?

Hello,

George… come

on through to the

HIGH DEpendency

unit…

I’m

scared…

Aw,

George...

…you’re in

good hands!

they’ll look

after you!

Always need

to wash thoroughly

as we can’t afford

to take Covid out

of the ward.

These 12

hour shifts are

exhausting. We

really need more

staff!!

it’s

running us

into the

ground!

Well that’s

me finished, I’m going

to get out of these scrubs

and get showered, I’m so

looking forward to soaking

in the bath when I get back

to the hotel. Bye Tracy,

keep safe.

Bye, Beth,

take care!

I needed

that bath so

much. Now to

call home…

Hey Mum!!

My hero!! Look what

we made for you we’re

going to put it in the

window to show

our support for

the NHS…

You’re

both up late, what

a lovely surprise!

And I have to say that

your artwork looks

wonderful! Thank you,

my darlings!

What

do you want

to say to

Mummy?

Thank you

for being so brave

by working so hard and

protecting us and everyone

by staying in a hotel… we

miss you tons and can’t

wait to see you!!

And we were out

clapping and banging

along with everyone

else in the street – it

was great, just wish

you were here!

Can we do

a Conference call

with our cousins,

Mum? It was so

much fun last

time…

Aww I wish we

could, but it’s very

late. Sophie would be

in bed - where you

both should be!

Maybe

tomorrow, as

Mummy has got to get

to bed, I’m up early

again tomorrow!

Love you guys!

Love you

too Mum,

Goodnight!

Dad,

are you

alright?

DAD!!

Coming

now,

Sophie!

The virus

is spreading in

an unnatural way

… and too fast!

Not sure

the number of

infections, different

age groups and

minority groups being

affected is the

cause?

Let’s get to

the bottom

of this…

[Activating

Virus Scanning

Lens]

That’s odd!

Why are there huge

handprints of the

virus everywhere – it’s

being spread

deliberately?

Someone is

behind this, or at

least adding to

the problem …

Something’s

not right

here.

Bark

Sanso, go and

track this to find

the source… go

quick…

Not long later…

Found>

Hi Curador –

what is it?

On a hunch I

sent Sanso to

find the source

in the City…

CALLING

UBERHERO

CALLING

UBERHERO

This is not

CoronaBot 2020

is growing

stronger…

and

bigger too!!

Thanks Curador,

leave this with

me!

CALLING

UBERHERO

CALLING

UBERHERO

Look what

he found…,

uploading to

you right now!

This isn’t good!

I need to check in with

the other Uberheroes

to see if they’ve any

other information on

CoronaBot 2020

Hi Q!

Yes we’re dealing

with multiple

Coronabots all

over the Asian

continent!

it’s the

Same here

for us in South

America!

multiple

CoronaBots, and

they’re getting

bigger and

stronger!

Yes, in

North America

we’re facing

multiple, giant

CoronaBots,

and

they seem to be

coordinating

their attacks!

Any of the

rest of the

teams reporting

this?’

In Africa

it is almost

overwhelming.

I don’t quite know

how we can

prevail!

We will

all have to

somehow combine

our resources if

we are to have

any chance.

Using the data

from our international

teams, Harmony has

re-tasked the global

satellite systems so we can

track Coroman and all the

CoronaBots to launch

coordinated attacks.

Dominie?

Khwam?

I’m sending

the satellite

info to you

now.

They’re

Dead?

Whaaat??

I don’t believe

this...

It can’t

be true, I just

can’t believe

they’re gone…

Something’s

wrong here! We’re

being deceived.

This isn’t right!

They were

tricking us with their

lies, trying to defeat us

emotionally before we’ve

challenged them … But

lies can’t stop us!

Maybe you

are too c lev er

for my lies, Veritas,

but we WILL

stop you!

You can’t

and never will

defeat us!!

You see,

I know what

you’re afraid

of…

The truth

of course...

What’s

that

Noooo !!!

the Uberheroes

have us corne red!

Pull back, CoronaBot

2020 will

crush them.

How are we

going to defeat

CoronaBot 2020 –

he’s becoming too

powerful?

I know

how to beat

him…

We do it

together!!

We’re all fine!!

I’m working from home

linking up with other

scientists across the

world to work on a

Vaccine…

Khwam…

You’re okay!

But I can

help you guys too!!

Khwam, try and get

inside CoronaBot

2020!!

I’m On it,

Domine!!

Dominie,

I’m on the ground

and Identitat has

created a shield –

can you do

something?

Don’t worry

I’m already

hacking the

system.

I can

help to boost

your signal,

Dominie!

Great work,

Dominie! Let’s

stop him now

Team!

You guys

distract him

until I’m

inside!

Well that’s

Identitat out

of the picture!

Thanks, Invictus!

I did it, the system is

hacked, and with

Harmony’s boost, the

signal is hacking the

connections between all

the CoronaBot’s

worldwide.

I’ve

got him!

Good work,

guys!

I’m in and

ripping up his

mainframe!

I’d say he’s

about to

go down!

Take this!!

Get back

everyone…

Please

Clear the

..area…

You

mindless

bot…

…The END!

for

you this

is…

Timberrrr…

You may

have brought

down CoronaBot

2020, but this is

not the end…

There are

many CoronaBot 2020’s

around the world and

they will just keep on

spreading disease and

fear along with it…

Coroman,

I didn’t think

you’d dare show

your face!

Take

another look,all

your CoronaBot 2020’s

are going down! Working

together the Uberheroes

around the world can

and will defeat you…

you’re all talk!

I’m the

source of

the virus…

and I will use

my core to empower all

the CoronaBot 2020’s

until everyone in the

world has Corona

Virus…

Blaaa Blaaa

Blaaa Blaaa….You

talk far too

much!!

And when

they do…

Glad he’s

gone… he can’t be

too dangerous now.

Especially with the

whole world working

against him…

Sanso…

do us all a favour

and seal his mouth

up and the opening

to his core of the

corona virus

too…

Noooo….

Mmhmhm...

Mhmhmhm...

He’s

vanishing

away..!

Over the next few months…

…And then

the Uberheroes

defeated most of the

CoronaBot 2020’s

which were spreading

the disease.

And along

with all our front

line heroes began to

fight back against

the disease…

With the

world working

together we can

fight back against

this threat.

Lockdown

was tough on all of us,

but it worked, and now with

it easing and people being

able to visit each other

we’re slowly getting back

towards normality.

and, so

long as the R number

keeps reducing, we can

get through this. It will

take time, but we can

beat this virus.

…this is why

it is important for

everyone to be sensible

in remembering to wash

their hands and keep

social distancing…

…Remembering

that we can beat

this if we all

work together!

Over the next few weeks…

I wished

I could see

my friends

soon…

You know

Sudds, schools will

be back soon and

you’ll see them then,

not to mention all

the Videocalls.

But now

that lockdown is

starting to ease off

maybe you’ll get

to see them very

soon…

Make

a wish,

Sophie…

I’ll talk to

their parents

first…

Thanks,

Dad!

Happy

Birthday!

Happy

Birthday,

Sophie!

Happy

Birthday,

Sudds!

You’re

welcome...

Happy

Birthday,

Sudds!

It’s because of

the great work of the

world medics, scientists

and Uberheroes that

things have improved –

But there’s still a

long way to go!

but as long as

we all work together

and act responsibly we can

defeat this in time, We all

have to adjust to this

post Covid world!

Yeah indeed, but

everyone needs to

remember to still do

the basics, washing our

hands, keeping our

distance and wearing

face masks –

A very

special thank

you to

everyone…

...including

you boy!

Everyone needs

to remember that

Covid-19 hasn’t gone

away as we will all be

battling this for

some time yet!

by doing this

it will give us

the best chance

to avoid a

second spike!

The End...?
