‘I believe they
did it right’
• From page 1
Area fire commander Dave
Berry said firefighters had done
all they could have to ensure
the fire did not flare up. An
operational review of what had
happened was under way.
“What the crews did, they had
thermal imaging cameras and
they went through the whole
place three times with the cameras,”
said Berry.
“They then hung around and
had a debrief and then went back
with the cameras. I believe they
did it right.
“We have what we call an
operational review. We just look
at the actions and active strategies
and what our learnings can
be from there and training or
response needed.”
The cause of the first fire is
still being investigated but it is
believed to have been started by
an electrical appliance.
The Prendergast’s son-inlaw
Dean Lory said while he
understands fires can reignite, it
was “bizarre” it happened
just hours after crews left the
scene.
“Whether their thermal
imaging camera was actually
working properly, you don’t
know.”
Two more sought over
caravan break-in
• By Devon Bolger
TWO MEN have been arrested
and another two are being sought
over an alleged attack on a man in a
caravan in Darfield.
A group of men, allegedly
armed with pool cues and
wrenches, forced their way into a
caravan on McLaughlin St about
10pm on August 9.
The occupant, a man in his
20s, suffered minor injuries. He
managed to fight the group off.
Two men from Darfield are
facing charges of burglary with a
weapon in relation to the incident.
Detective Sergeant Michael
Varnam said police are asking the
public to help them identify two
other men who may be able to
assist with the investigation.
They are not believed to live in
the district, but spend time in the
area, he said.
“One of the people who has been
arrested is a previous associate of
the victim so it wasn’t just random,
there is some sort of bad blood
there but we don’t know the actual
motive,” said Varnam.
Nothing was taken from the
caravan.
HELP: Police are asking
for the public’s help in
identifying these two men,
who may be able to assist
with inquiries into a caravan
break-in in Darfield.
If anyone has any
information or is able to
identify the males, please
The great boundary of calm at or on the distant
horizon, the place that is held in the mind is
beyond, always out of reach, untouchable. Te
Pātū-nui-o-aiō is the place of mists and time
the great navigators and travellers came from.
From the land we look back, look beyond to this
Once again Little River Gallery is honoured to
host the trio of artists Robin Slow, Brian Flintoff
and Bob Bickerton. The three close friends work
collaboratively, inspiring one another in their
artistic endeavours. Slow’s paintings are rich
stories of Whenua, Waka journeys to Aotearoa,
of Manu, Honu, Tohora and their Kaitiaki. Flintoff
is renowned for his musical instruments carved
from native timbers, bone and shell. His carvings
are inspired by the same stories that inform Slow’s
work. Bickerton creates a contemplative visual and
aural catalogue of the combined outcomes using
his musical skills and those of Ariana Tikao, Holly
Tikao-Weir, Solomon Rahui.
