FALCON RANCH AUGUST YARD OF THE MONTH

We added a new Category to the Falcon Ranch Yard Of The Month

Award. We’re calling it: “THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD”

We asked all residents to enter someone they felt was deserving

of being nominated for the Yard of the Month award. It could be

themselves - it could be someone else in the neighborhood. We

received 5 nominations. So, for the August Yard of the month we

have chosen - “A People’s Choice” Winner

The August People’s Choice Yard Of The Month Winner goes to a

very deserving homeowner-Mike and Julie Young, 24919 Falcon

Hollow. One of their neighbors nominated them and when I drove

up to their home, I immediately knew why. “Meticulous” is how

I would describe it. The grass is so well manicured it looks like a

Golf Course. A combination of Flowers and bushes are strategically

placed within the brick rimmed flowerbeds. Mr. Young told me it is

a “Work In Progress.” He still has flowers to add.

Mr. and Mrs. Young are both in the Medical Field. They are working

long hours during these hard times. Thank you, Julie and Mike, for

what you are doing to help us all. And thank you for truly making

our community a beautiful place to live.

A big thank you to all of the Honorable Mention Winners. There are

so many people who are working hard to keep their yards mowed

and weeded and flower beds bright and beautiful. I wished we

could give everyone an award.

FALCON RANCH INFO

If you need assistance or know of a neighbor who may, please contact

Mary Beth Jones at 630-699-8272 or Rudy Reyes at 713-598-2967.

Trash and Recycling is collected every Tuesday and Trash only on Friday.

Please remember, to bring in your Trash cans the evening of Pick Up.

This is an easy way to make our Community look fresh and appealing.

If you mow your lawn after trash has been picked up, please keep

the bag of grass clippings in your garage until Trash Pickup Day.

Again, an easy way to improve the appearance of our Community.

If you must park on the street, please make sure you are not parked

directly behind a resident’s driveway. This makes it very difficult for

the home owner to back out of their driveways.

Please do not park near the end of a block as this deters traffic flow.

It is also a safety issue with Children coming home from school and

getting off the bus.

FALCON RANCH NEXTDOOR WEBSITE

Joining the Falcon Ranch Nextdoor website is the best way to keep up with the

latest news affecting our neighborhood. It is restricted to only verified Falcon

Ranch residents and you can configure privacy and notification settings to suit

you. As of August 2017, 875 residents are on there, reflecting 564 individual

households. Nextdoor is used to find lost pets, referrals for contractors,

landscaping, babysitting and stay safe by being informed about crime, like car

break-ins. Use this link to sign up: http://tinyurl.com/nextdoorfr.

HOA BOARD MEETINGS

Many of our Falcon Ranch Homeowners have requested we move our Falcon

Ranch HOA Meetings to a different night, other than the fourth Wednesday

of the month. By popular demand, we moved our HOA Board Meetings, to

the fourth Tuesday of the month, starting in June 2018. The starting time of

our HOA Meetings will still be at 6:30 PM. The HOA Board Members and the

Management from Spectrum Association Management respect the wishes of

our Falcon Ranch Homeowners.

FALCON RANCH LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE

Mary Beth Jones, the New Landscape Committee Chairperson for Falcon

Ranch, is looking for volunteers to help on the Landscape Committee. You may

contact her at 630-699-8272.

BOARD CONTACT INFO

WANTING TO MAKE AN

EXTERIOR IMPROVEMENT TO YOUR HOME?

Many new homeowners like to improve on the new home they purchase by

adding a swimming pool, storage shed or other modifications. If you want to

make an exterior change to your home, please fill out the application found on the

Spectrum Website at www.spectrumam.com. The Association has a committee

that reviews these applications and the committee has 30 days to respond.

NEWSLETTER DEADLINES

Residents are invited to contribute to this local newsletter. Articles should be

submitted to the Board (board@falconranchhoa.com), no later than the 20 th of the

month BEFORE the newsletter is printed, which is the month before distribution.

RECYCLE YARD WASTE

Residents of Falcon Ranch could benefit the community, as well as their own

lawns and pocketbooks, with one simple change in lawn maintenance. If you

or your lawn service currently bag grass clippings, simply leaving the clippings

to work down into the lawn will make a huge difference in the amount of waste

our community puts into the landfill each year. It will also help conserve water,

because the clippings will work to maintain moisture in the soil. Both of these

benefits will save money in the long-run. Moreover, it is estimated that lawns that

are naturally fertilized with grass clippings require 25% less fertilizer - resulting

in even more savings to you! Grass clippings and finely chopped leaves add vital

nutrients and organic matter to the lawn, thus improving the health of the lawn.

It isn’t necessary to use a mulching mower; just mow one inch when grass reaches

four inches tall. The clippings won’t be noticed and will break down within a week.

REPORTING SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

You may have noticed the constables patrolling our neighborhoods,

working to keep our community safer for everyone. The appearance of

constables has raised a question of what to do if you witness suspicious

activity. If you see something happening that is an emergency, please call

911. If you see suspicious activities that are not emergencies, call the Fort

Bend County Sheriff’s Office at 281-341-4665.

PET PEEVES

Do your duty as a pet owner! When you take your dog for a walk around

the community or to the park, please be courteous to the surrounding

neighbors and pick up behind your pet and keep unwanted dog waste

from becoming a threat and a nuisance to the safety and enjoyment for

all members of the community.

STREETLIGHTS OUT?

Contact CenterPoint Energy for repair of streetlights that are not working

at: 713-207-2222 by phone or 713-207-9760 by fax

www.centerpointenergy.com/outage/ by internet

Remember to obtain the 6-digit pole number along with the closest

physical address to the street light that is not working. This will cut down

on the time for CenterPoint to locate and repair the pole.

BUNCO GROUP

Are you interested in joining a really fun bunco group? We meet on the 1 st

Wednesday of each month, from 7-9:30 PM. Each of us host at our home

with a meal, cooked, catered ordered, it makes no difference, once a year.

Rather than each of us have to bring cash each month, the hostess pays

$75 and that covers her part for the year. This is a monthly commitment,

we depend on you showing up each month, so please don’t take this

decision lightly. We ask you to sub for 2 months, so we get to know each

other, see if we are all a good fit. Then we vote on you and you decide if

you like us, too! If this sounds like something you can commit to and be a

part of, please email Carolyn at texasgal6942@att.net.

TEENAGE JOB SEEKERS

If you are between 12 and 18 and would like to be added to the

teenage job seeker’s list, please fill out the form on our website (www.

krenekprinting.com, click submissions and choose Jobseekers) with your

name, birthdate (mo. & yr.), phone number, year you will graduate and

the name of your newsletter/subdivision. Check the list of jobs you want

on your form. Please make sure your email is correct, we send emails

in the summer to make sure all the info is still good and that you want

to stay on the list. If we do not hear back from you after 3 tries, we will

remove you from the list until we do. Must have parent(s) permission.

DISCLAIMER

Neither the subdivision, nor Krenek Printing is responsible for those listed

on the Teenage Job Seeker List. Please ask for and check out references

if you do not personally know those listed. This is just a list of teenagers

from the subdivision who wish to find part time jobs. Responsibility for

any work done by these teenagers is between those seeking helpers and

the teens and their parents.

ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION INVITES

KATY/WEST HOUSTON RESIDENTS TO

JOIN 2020 WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S®

Participants will Raise Critically Needed Awareness and Funds for

Alzheimer’s Care, Support and Research. The Alzheimer’s Association®

is invitingKaty, Fulshear, Cypress, Richmond and other West Houston

area residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in

the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s.The Walk will take

place on Saturday, September 26, 2020,The Katy/West Houston Walk

to End Alzheimer’s continues, but instead of hosting a large gathering,

the Alzheimer’s Association is encouraging participants to walk as

individuals or in small groups on sidewalks, tracks and trails across Katy,

West Houston, Fulshear, Richmond and surrounding areas.

Time-honored components of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s are being

replicated. On walk day, an Opening Ceremony will feature local speakers

and a presentation of Promise Flowers to honor the personal reasons

participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementia, all

delivered to participants’ smartphones, tablets and computers. A small

group of Alzheimer’s Association staff and volunteers will create the iconic

Promise Garden in a “view only” format on Walk day on commercial Blvd

along the original walk route to honor all those impacted by Alzheimer’s.

To enhance the participant experience leading up to the event and on

Walk day, new features are being added to the Walk to End Alzhemer’s

mobile app to create an opportunity for the community to connect.

Participants can use the app and new “Walk Mainstage’’ to track their

steps and distance, follow a virtual Walk path, manage their Facebook

fundraisers and access information and resources from the Association

and Walk sponsors to help individuals and families affected by the

disease. A new audio track is available to encourage participants along

the way and to congratulate them upon completion of their Walk.

8 TIPS FOR STUDYING AT HOME EFFECTIVELY

1. TRY ACTIVE STUDYING: Active studying is

as simple as asking questions before, during

and after study time. Not only does this help

to give your study session direction, but it also

helps keep you on track and reflect on how to

improve for your next study session!

Questions to ask yourself before you study:

What am I about to learn?

What do I already know about this subject?

Questions to ask yourself while you study:

How does this information fit into a bigger

picture?

Do I understand what I have just read?

Can I paraphrase it?

Are there any key words or ideas that I need to

write down? Why are these words and ideas

important?

Questions to ask yourself after you study:

What can I take away from this study session?

What do I need to review or learn next time?

HOW TO STUDY AT HOME

(WITHOUT GETTING DISTRACTED)

Studying at home has its perks: it’s a comfortable, low-pressure environment. However, there

are a few reasons it can be difficult to study at home; with so many distractions, it’s easy to

procrastinate-when you do start, it’s easy to get off track.

At home, procrastination and distraction can prevent you from accomplishing what you

need to get done. Watching TV, taking a nap, scrolling through social media or other activities

(maybe even cleaning your room!), are big productivity killers that take you away from your

goal of studying for or completing that assignment.

Fortunately, there are a few tricks you can use to help you be more productive. Here are 8

ways to help you stay focused and get more done when studying at home.

2. GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP: Students of all

ages should get at least eight hours of sleep

every school night. It’s the best way to ensure

that the brain is refreshed and ready to process

all of the information learned during the day. It

may be tempting to stay up late to cram, but it’s

more beneficial to get enough rest. A full night’s

sleep is especially important the night before a

test-a good night’s sleep makes you more alert

and improves memory for test material, leading

to better test results.

3. STUDY AT THE RIGHT TIME: Every student

has his or her own daily highs and lows. Some

people are night owls while some people

prefer the morning. Take advantage of the time of the day you feel most

productive and don’t try to force yourself to study when your brainpower

isn’t at its peak. Try to study when you are most alert, so you are able to

process and retain the information that you are studying.

4. HAVE A DESIGNATED STUDY AREA: Whether it’s the kitchen table or

the desk in your bedroom, create an area to study that is a designated

study zone. Try to reserve your bed for sleeping and avoid studying in it

(it can be all too easy to take a nap!). Most importantly, keep your study

space clean and organized so you can put more time into studying (and

less trying to find a pen that works).

5. EAT PROPERLY: Don’t forget to eat! Your body (and your brain) needs

fuel to help stay in top form. Plus, it’s difficult to focus when your stomach

is growling. Have healthy snacks while you study, but make sure they’re

prepared in advance so you don’t spend too much time away from your

work. More time away means more opportunity to be distracted!

6. CREATE A TIMETABLE: Creating a timetable helps organize your time,

schedules your breaks and is especially useful when you have multiple

subjects to study. Write your schedule down so you can remember it

and refer to it often. Set reasonable limits for how much time you spend

studying each day and break your study session up into manageable

chunks of time.

7. USE A TIMER: Use a timer to help keep track of time and to make sure

you stick to the timetable you created. Setting a timer helps keeps you

focused on the task at hand, committed to working until the timer goes

off and helps keep you on track to cover all the material you need to.

Above all else, it helps keep your break time effective and guilt-free

(because you’ve earned it!).

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR STUDY TIME

Although it seems convenient, studying at home can be difficultprocrastination

and distraction can happen easily. But with a little bit of

planning and organization, it can be an effective (and comfortable) place

to study. Try some of these tips for studying at home to help you stay

focused and more efficient with your study time.

NATIONAL GRANDPARENTS DAY -

SUNDAY AFTER LABOR DAY

Each year on the Sunday following Labor Day, grandchildren across

the country honor their grandparents. There is a special bond that

can only be shared between grandchildren and their grandparents.

Grandparents are full of hugs and kisses, family history, wisdom, patience,

love and guidance. National Grandparents Day gives grandchildren the

opportunity to show love and appreciation to their grandparents.

National Grandparents Day has its very own song. The National

Grandparents Day Council of Chula Vista, California announced in 2004

that A Song for Grandma and Grandpa by Johnny Prill would be the official

song of the United States National Grandparents Day holiday. The Council

presented Prill with the National Songwriter’s Award in recognition of his

highly popular composition A Song for Grandma and Grandpa.

The forget-me-not is the official flower for National Grandparents Day.

National Grandparents Day is expected to grow in significance over the

next decade and beyond as the number of grandparents in the United

States rises from 65 million in 2011 to 80 million in 2020 as a result of the

baby boom. Show your appreciation for everything your grandparents

have done for you.

TIME NOW TO MAKE PLANS FOR

FALL LANDSCAPING PROJECTS.

• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead

wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct

with iron cheleates.

• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around

the roots.

• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with

a dose of fertilizer the first week of September.

• Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations

explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been

dormant wake up.

- Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and

thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to

the undersides of the leaves.

- Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and

mealybug.

• Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted.

• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.

• Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the

number of eggs that make it to Spring.

• St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue

to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to

produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter.

• Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that

appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological

controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus

thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on

the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the

application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them

to get nice fresh Bt.

• When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch

disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights

drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s.

• Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of

new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning

should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant.

• Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and

the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out

starting in mid-August.
