As many of theirneighbors have done, they engagedan architect to replace their olderhome with a new one to suit theirchanging needs.The homeowners challenged thedesign team to create a classichome that defies trends and sets amodern example of timelessness—gone is the kitchen island, familyroom, and fireplace! The spaceswithin this updated version of acenter-hall Colonial maintain theirindividual characters without beingcompletely separate from eachother.The back half of the main floor isdesigned to convert to a futureowner bedroom suite if needed,allowing the homeowners to age inplace. Bedrooms are right-sized andthe second floor features a generouslaundry room. Spaces are floodedwith natural light, enhancing thequality of life for the owners.PROJECT TYPE:New ConstructionFEATURES: Sustainability Considerations Age-in-place Design Compact Living Accessible/Universal DesignUniversal Design:Architecture for AllEven if you and other family members living inyour home are all able-bodied now, a suddenmedical issue or life-changing accident impactingmobility can mean your formerly comfortable house is now largely inacessible.Universal design is an approach that ensures people of all abilities can use abuilding.
